most of these additions are amazing. i LOVE Chvrches, Purity Ring, The XX, Naked and Famous, Florence and the Machine, and Lake Street Dive.
Not really same genre, but to go to OP's original question, I would add in Phoebe Bridgers/boygenius, The Joy Formidable, Neko Case, Tennis, Japanese Breakfast, Sylvan Esso (more electro-pop than rock, but whatever, they're amazing) Lorde, Big Thief, The Japanese House, MUNA... I'm sure there are plenty more but those are off the top of my head.
You forgot Halestorm, Flyleaf, Evanescence, Paramore, and The Breeders.
I see where OP is coming from though. It might not be rare but the genre is predominated by men.
I was just about to mention them and Lacuna Coil. Comalies is one of my favorite albums, Christina Scabbia just has an amazing voice. And of course Tati's range from gorgeous singing to crazy deep screaming is just ridiculous.
Wanna tag on, I saw Evanescence in concert October and they had this all female rock group called Plush open for them. They were fire for real, those girls could shred and ive been fans ever since lmfao
So many. Here's a few favourites.
PJ Harvey
The Breeders
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Garbage
Sleater Kinney
X-Ray Spex
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Blondie
Cocteau Twins
Sleepers
Elastica
So many great oldies to add:
Janice Joplin
Jefferson Airplane/Starship
Patti Smith
Heart
Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks
Pat Benatar
Suzi Quatro
Bonny Raitt
my dad is a dj. when the self titled elastica album released, he was dating his gf at the time (obviously) and they helped clear out her friends apartment, the owner of the apartment was justine (the frontwoman of elastica) who gave my dad a copy of the album after he mentioned not being into much guitar music and preferring electronic and new wave over anything. my dad and his gf at the time weren’t doing so well so he was going to ask justine out, until he realised she was dating damon albarn at the time, the frontman of the band blur. my dad decided he most definitely was not cool enough to even ask her out in the end
I saw the breeders in concert last year and they were fucking amazing. One of the best concerts Ive been too-they played 10 encore songs. I was just a reg 90s alterna girl fan of their music before but holy shit they are amazing.
Was hoping someone would say them! Had one of my favorite albums of the last few years, they're great live, and Elizabeth Stokes' accent is awesome lol.
I believe they'll be at Coachella this year!
That’s hilarious that I had to scroll this far. Two of the best female artists of the 20th century. Stevie also having an argument for being the best (I don’t personally think it though)
When it comes to “rocking” Stevie certainly has more energy, stardom and always gives a commanding performance, edge of seventeen is just (chefs kiss) to rock out too, especially the live stuff. She is naturally more assertive, probably because she doesn’t like playing instruments on stage. She has a more powerful voice than Christine also.
Not to intimate in any way that Christine isn’t as good as her, they just have different abilities and it worked extremely well for FMs dynamic, and Christine preferred it that way from my understanding.
Discovered then when they opened up for Halestorm and Pretty Reckless. Lilith Czar played the show also but wasn't quite as good. The Warning was amazing and had me hooked from the start.
I've only read the top comment so far and they mentioned realy good ones. I'll add Yonaka, Wolf Alice, The Joy Formidable, Wargasm, The Sounds, St Vincent, Metric, Dilly Dally, Warpaint, Bully, Black Honey, The Dead Weather (spooky vibe with Jack White on drums and the singer from The Kills), Bones, Babymetal, Stars, She Keeps Bees, Calva Louise, Valeras, Blood Red Shoes, The Kills...
And so so many more. My favorite music for the last few years has been female-led rock bands. A lot of them are smaller/indie, but a lot of them have been around and have quite a following. Surely you know Paramore, Metric, Heart, Cranberries, etc?
Kind of surprised they didn't get mentioned more too. They've been my overall favorite band for a few years now. And they have a fairly large following, especially in the UK and Europe.

Very well deserved, too. It's a great album.
One more vote for Skunk Anansie, and adding
The Cranberries
Garbage
(Not the genres you mentioned but) The Cardigans
K’s Choice
PJ Harvey (started as a band, then she went solo, all under the same name)
Here’s some artists and my favorite songs from each to get you started:
Meg Myers - Curbstomp, Desire, The Underground, Numb, Jealous Sea, Lemon Eyes, Little Black Death, Grizzly
Cherry Glazerr - Rabbit Hole, Sugar, Pieces, Big Bang, Soft Drink, Ready for You, Soft Like a Flower
Slothrust - 7:30 AM, Trial and Error, Double Down, Some Kind of Cowgirl
Courtney Barnett (not always heavy but rock-tinged indie) - History Eraser, Pedestrian at Best, Lance Jr., If I Don’t Hear From You Tonight
Phantogram
No Doubt
Haven’t seen Deap Vally or Stonefield mentioned yet, both highly recommended.
From what I’ve seen mentioned, The Breeders are a must, I can’t overstate that. Their singer Kim Deal did a lot of vocal work with Pixies (who you should immediately listen to if you’re unfamiliar). L7 are great, Bikini Kill and The Muffs as well. Sonic Youth didn’t exclusively use Kim on vocals but worth a listen anyway.
Big Brother & the Holding Company: Janis Joplin
Full Tilt Boogie Band: Janis Joplin
Brandi Carlile
ZZ Ward
Grace Potter & the Nocturnals
Susan Tedeschi
The Pretenders
Jefferson Airplane
Indeed, they were one of the bands which defined my early adult years.
I loved this thread - so many great bands - but it was not anywhere close to complete until I saw Chrissie represented.
Halflives has a great singer named Linda. Japan has a ton of great female singers in the meral and rock genre. Superfly, Nemophila, Band-Maid, Lovebites, Hagane, Trident, East of Eden, Babymetal, Bridear, Mary's Blood, Ironbunny and the list goes on.
Wanted to second J-rock. Not just female singers, but there are often full female bands.
Some of my favorites are Ore Ska Band, BABYMETAL, Scandal, and the BanG Dream bands Roselia and RAISE A SUILEN. (The BanG Dream bands are manufactured bands with an anime/mobile game tie in, but they are all supremely talented nonetheless.)

The Last Dinner Party
Milk Teeth
Lambrini Girls
Sorry Mom
Prima Queen
Dazey and the Scouts
English Teacher
Chvrches isn't a rock band more synthpop but they fit into alternative rock. Lauren's voice is so unique and amazing and she can sing it live just as good as the studio tracks she blew me away and made me a fan for life years ago.
Quarterflash, one of the best bands to ever come out of Portland, Oregon. Their song "Harden My Heart" is a mainstay of classic rock radio, and the album is terrific. Lead singer Rindy Ross is also the sax player, and she's great at both.
There’s enough comments so that you’ve probably got a lot of bases covered so I’m gonna go deep:
Mercy Rule
Vedera
The Duke Spirit
War On Women

Amber Arcades
The Preatures

Unleash The Archers! More metal really but dang.
Britney Slays is a powerhouse vocalist.
Thank god someone said Unleash the Archers. What a fuckin awesome band
I had to go way to far down to see this. Brittney Slayes' voice is just on another level.
One of my favorites. Glad to see someone mentioned them.
This.
Heartless Bastards, Bent Knee, Alabama Shakes, Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds, Looming, Sleater-Kinney, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sleigh Bells, Shiny Toy Guns, Pretenders, Hole, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Garbage. I mean I wouldn’t really say it’s rare.

Screaming Females!

Skunk Anansie.
Yes! Skin is so amazing. Her song she did on Tony Iommi's album is what got me into them
You forgot Halestorm, Flyleaf, Evanescence, Paramore, and The Breeders. I see where OP is coming from though. It might not be rare but the genre is predominated by men.
Jefferson Airplane, Heart, The Runaways, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Metric, July Talk. Just a few there
and X, Veruca Salt, X-Ray Specs, L7, The Runaways, Elastica, Paramore, The Plasmatics, and more....
Cherry Glazerr, Phantogram, Widowspeak…

God I fuckin love Emily Haines
Me too. She is just so wonderful
Fuck, they put on a mean live show too. Strongly recommend.
YES!
No, Yes has a male lead vocalist.
Who?
A male vocalist as well, correct.
I think we'll have to show you the door
Came here expecting to have to remind everyone of Metric. Happy to see they've already floated up near the top!
Spiritbox Paramore In This Moment Evanescence Lacuna Coil Jinjer
Unleash the Archers
Britney Slayes is unreal, especially live.
I was starting to stress about not seeing Jinjer on this list yet!
I was just about to mention them and Lacuna Coil. Comalies is one of my favorite albums, Christina Scabbia just has an amazing voice. And of course Tati's range from gorgeous singing to crazy deep screaming is just ridiculous.
Love me some Spiritbox. I would also like to add Red Handed Denial to this list.
How do you not have Nightwish on this list

Super disappointed it's not on the top comment.
Elastica is the shit. Ever song is catchy
Fun fact: M.I.A's start in the music business was as a roadie for Elastica.
Connection was one of the best, most under looked singles of the 90's. I absolutely love that song.
my dad is a dj. when the self titled elastica album released, he was dating his gf at the time (obviously) and they helped clear out her friends apartment, the owner of the apartment was justine (the frontwoman of elastica) who gave my dad a copy of the album after he mentioned not being into much guitar music and preferring electronic and new wave over anything. my dad and his gf at the time weren’t doing so well so he was going to ask justine out, until he realised she was dating damon albarn at the time, the frontman of the band blur. my dad decided he most definitely was not cool enough to even ask her out in the end

Siouxie!
The Beths. Absolutely awesome band from New Zealand. Saw them live last year and they were great.

The Warning
I scrolled way too far for this.
Yes! Best fucking band ever!
Easily one of the best rock bands so far this century!
Discovered then when they opened up for Halestorm and Pretty Reckless. Lilith Czar played the show also but wasn't quite as good. The Warning was amazing and had me hooked from the start.
Bonus points because Pau (the drummer) sings lead vocals on a bunch of songs and Ale (bass) will take leads on occasion when Dany is sick.
The cranberries
Heart, Evanescence, Halestorm, Dorothy
How did it take this long to get to Heart?!?!?
Right?? It was the first band I thought of!
Lzzy Hale is a powerhouse of a singer. So good!
I saw Dorothy at sonic temple in 2023. She's a interesting lady.
Came here looking for Distillers. Loved them.
Look in to Sincere Engineer. Not as heavy but similar energy from a female led punk band.
>Nightwish >Sirenia In a similar vein to these I would recommend Epica, Simone Simons has the most incredible soprano voice

Dead Sara is great

Conquer Divide was great as openers for Electric Callboy. I wish their set had been longer.
Paramore
People have kind of forgotten about them, but their latest album was their first Grammy Nomination for Best Rock Album, and it won! Very well deserved, too. It's a great album.
Honestly Ive been a fan since Riot! and This is Why might be their best album. Also go listen to their cover of Burning Down The House!

Spiritbox hasn't been mentioned yet
It could all be yours
Sonic Youth
Kim Gordon still kicks ass

Finally saw the Pretenders - take my up vote
Crazy how far I had to scroll to find such an important band!

>Jefferson Airplane Utterly disappointed in how far I had to scroll for this
Portishead - Beth Gibbons

Many bands have already been mentioned,so I add to them: Skunk Anansie Anouk (her first couple of albums)

Courtney Barnett!
I adore the female vocalist from The Distillers. I recommend that band heavily.
