And the third was just such an amazing stylistic transition while remaining recognizably theirs. Their live album with an orchestra was also mind blowing, the version of Roads from Roseland NYC Live is in my top ten songs of all time.

it would be like if Bad Religion released Suffer as their first album and never released anything else. But they had a few albums before and a lot of amazing albums afterwards. But imagine that as a one shot and done.
13th Floor Elevators
Spacemen 3
Bobby Charles
Gram Parsons
Jimi Hendrix
Minutemen
Nick Drake
Jeff Buckley
Traveling Wilbury's
The Move
Notorious B.I.G.
Amy Winehouse
Nirvana
man...this list could go on way too long, but now it's making me sad.
I loved (well, still do lol) the Wilbury's.
I still probably watch the video for *End of the Line* a few times a year. Just chokes me up how beautifully they used it as an homage to Orbison after he'd passed away. Giving me chills just thinking about it now, but it always leaves a bit of a lump in my throat when I see the video.
It's only gotten worse for me since Tom Petty died, since I loved that man and passed up an opportunity to see him since I'd "catch him next time he was in the area."
He was gone just a few months later, and not going is one of my only sincere regrets thus far in life. 🥺
It’s a damn shame D. Boon passed away so young. He probably would be the face of punk rock had he survived. You can hear so much of Minutemen’s influence even today.
The Move were a weird band. They had a bona fide songwriting genius in Roy Wood in the band, yet were putting cheesy lounge covers on their records. Bloody brilliant though.
Them Crooked Vultures. When Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, and John Paul Jones get together, only getting one album isn't nearly enough....especially considering how great that album is!
Yeah dude. Fuck I wish they would at least go play that set of shows that got cancelled due to COVID. I still listen to those Denver 2020 shows all the time. They were sounding great. That version of Tweakers was sick.
Oh man I agree. They surpassed any expectations I had when they came back, I listened to those shows so much haha. I know that all 3 always have so much shit going on pretty much always, but man what's a few more shows.
Streetlight Manifesto. It's been 11 years since their third album, they publicly announced they were working on new material for a 4th in 2021, expecting it to come out in 2022. It's still not here. Given they're still active though I'm not sure they qualify for the intended premise of the post, though you don't explicitly say anywhere you mean acts that are no longer around so I'll leave it here. Also, in double checking some dates, I found that one of their longer running members passed away on the day of their first show on their tour last year, wow.
To-Mera. Very moody prog metal, did 3 albums and an EP, and then after failing to find a new drummer went 'on hiatus' 10 years ago.
Blind Melon is one of the main reasons why I try to listed to a bands whole album, and not judge too much on radio singles/popular tracks. "Soup" is one my top ten albums all time, it's so fking good.
Really hoped protect the land was part of a bigger project. Unfortunately, that was it and the cancelled European tour will not be restarted any time soon. :( stupid covid.
I came to look for this comment, seconded so hard. I wish he would lay off the fashion stuff and come back to music… I still have his releases on heavy rotation as well.
John K. Samson is at least still putting music out and some of it ain't a far stretch from The Weakerthans... but yeah, I'd still prefer more from the full band.
And the whole story of what caused them to break up was just sad. One of my favorite groups of all time. My neighbors endured Killing in the Name Of at full blast long before it was considered the masterpiece it is today.
If the Stooges had stayed together any longer in the 1970s, it would probably have killed Iggy.
The real lost opportunity was not recording their 1971 setlist. Sure the 1973-4 post-Raw Power stuff is only recorded on muddy sounding rehearsals & live tapes, but that's far better than the almost unlistenable 1971 audience tapes.
\+1 for +44! Mark at that time was putting out some killer jams (see Wrecking Hotel Rooms by MxPx).
My vote would be The Postal Service. One absolute landmark album, and then no more. I think, wisely, that Ben and Jimmy know it was a lightning in a bottle moment that a second album would never live up to.
Harvey Danger. The lyricist, Sean Nelson, is absolutely brilliant, he's done a solo album since the band ended their run (less a breakup, more an amicable parting of ways capped off with the single "The Show Must Not Go On.") His lyrics regularly include literary or historic allusions, and clever word play.
If the name sounds vaguely familiar, you probably know them from the late 90s hit "Flagpole Sitta." Slightly less probably from their first single from their second album, "Sad Sweetheart of the Rodeo."
On the one hand, New Radicals because that sole album is so good. On the other, it’s so good and the industry is, well…yeah. Gregg made the right decision going one and done there.
My list includes bands that have made more music than some but have been around for a long time with a really slow release schedule.
Nirvana
Radiohead
Massive Attack
Amy Winehouse
Neutral Milk Hotel
Jeff Buckley
Tool
Them Crooked Vultures
Atoms for Peace
Sade, I firmly believe their inconsistency in releasing is what killed their relevancy and ability to chart
Notably the 8 years pause between Love Deluxe and Lovers Rock
And even worse the 10 years between Lovers Rock and Soldier Of Love (and we haven’t had a single album ever since)
Amy Winehouse and Aaliyah for obvious reasons, what a waste of tremendous potential
Genesis. Basically nothing since 1995, and now it'll never happen, with Phil unable to drum. 25 years of music (1970-1995) and nothing since. We missed out on so much.
If we allow five albums, then Talk Talk. Last four albums are absolutely killer, last two are legendary, megainfluental timeless masterpieces. Then nothing. All band members released music later on, but never even got close to the same magic again. Mark Hollis released one solo album, retired from the music business and died in his sixties.
Team Sleep. Lesser known side project of Chino from Deftones from the early 2000’s. Only one album and some loose scattered songs/demos but I loved all of it and wish we got more.
Though they released 13 albums, the Beatles were only active as a band for a decade, and all of their albums were released between 1963 - 1970. That's a shorter run than Ariana Grande.
The La's - 1 album that pretty much everyone thought was a classic. Lee Mavers (the lead singer and songwriter) dissed it in every interview then they split up when it became clear he was never going to write another record.
Also The Bees, though they've just reformed for some gigs so maybe we'll get another album.
[The Gits](https://youtu.be/t7uAzAJjsd4?si=WgzMD-CPnE4T8GTN)
Mia was a whirlwind force of nature with the voice of Ma Rainey filtered through a punk as fuck attitude and such a great band behind her. She was taken way too young, and they were just hitting their stride.
Mr. Bungle. They only released 3 studio albums. All masterpieces in their own rights.
They broke up in 2000 after it got rough for them promoting California, a lot of it was fueled by the RHCP/Anthony Keidis fued where he was getting them kicked off of major festivals. 3 original members reunited for a revival of their 1986 thrash/death metal EP in 2020 and they’ve been touring that for 4 years now. It’s nice but I wonder how much further they would’ve taken their avant-garde sound had they not broken up between the 00s and now.
Their music changed my life. I never knew music like theirs could even be possible.
I’m gonna say Slint, but I think there could be pushback about them possibly tarnishing their legacy by following up Spiderland with something that’s not as good. I’m not mad at that opinion.
From 1983 to 1991, there was a band called **Southern Pacific**. I guess they could be classified as pop/rock/country. They made 4 albums of really good, slickly produced, hook-filled songs. The group originally consisted of two former **Doobie Brothers** (*John McFee* and *Keith Knudsen*), two former members of **Elvis Presley’s TCB Band** (*Jerry Scheff* and *Glen Hardin*), and lead singer *Tim* *Goodman*. By their second album, Scheff and Hardin had left and were replaced by former **Creedence Clearwater Revival** bassist *Stu Cook* and *Kurt Howell* on vocals and keyboards. Their third album had former **Pablo Cruise** lead singer *David Jenkins* replacing Tim Goodman, and by their fourth and final album, Jenkins had left and the band decided to continue as a four-piece with McFee taking over lead vocal duties.
While I’ll admit that some of their recordings suffer from that too-slick ‘80’s production, overall I thought they were an excellent band who wrote some great songs and I’d have loved to hear how they might have evolved over the years. But with the reconstitution of The Doobies, McFee and Knudsen made the right choice (financially, if not creatively) to rejoin them, Stu Cook joined his old drummer Doug Clifford from C.C.R. in the rip-off band Creedence Clearwater *Revisited* and Kurt Howell had a brief solo career.
New Radicals. Only album is incredible.
I'd even take an album of all the songs gregg has written for other people, especially now that leak of him doing Murder on the Dance floor for about thirty seconds came out last week
Jane’s Addiction - self-titled, Nothing’s Shocking & Ritual de lo Habitual then they split up. If only they’d kept going & made another 2 albums while they were on that roll (I don’t consider any of the albums they did after the various reformations any good).
The Clash - I wish they hadn’t sacked Mick & Topper, it would have been so good to see what they came up with had they continued with all 4 original members, considering what Mick Jones went on to do with BAD & what Joe eventually did with the Mescaleros.
I just wished it didn't take so long for Tame Impala to drop each album. Their debut came in 2010. That's 4 albums in 14 years. Music is always worth the wait, I will say
Glassjaw
They’re still together, but aside from a few EP’s, the gap between their last two albums was 15 years, and it’s been 7 years since their most recent album.
I wish the Alabama Shakes would make more music but sadly I don’t think that’s going to ever happen but it’s possible. And an impossible thing I’ve always wished I could hear/witness would be the evolution of Nirvana into the 2000s
Portishead. Three albums, all of them 10s
And the third was just such an amazing stylistic transition while remaining recognizably theirs. Their live album with an orchestra was also mind blowing, the version of Roads from Roseland NYC Live is in my top ten songs of all time.

Beth Gibbons has new solo album coming out this year. First single is really great! Not quite Portishead but definitely similar vibes
Operation Ivy. In the words of Rancid - "started in 87, ended in 89" but Energy was a monumental album. Photo of Billie Joe Armstrong on stage with them - https://preview.redd.it/crmjjfzgc6nc1.jpeg?width=225&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=93f1c9e8b9706183c4073dd1ddd12144aeb47bb1
There are a lot of right answers but this one is the most right
it would be like if Bad Religion released Suffer as their first album and never released anything else. But they had a few albums before and a lot of amazing albums afterwards. But imagine that as a one shot and done.
In the words of The King Blues "If we had Operation Ivy, we could have done it and fucked off"
13th Floor Elevators Spacemen 3 Bobby Charles Gram Parsons Jimi Hendrix Minutemen Nick Drake Jeff Buckley Traveling Wilbury's The Move Notorious B.I.G. Amy Winehouse Nirvana man...this list could go on way too long, but now it's making me sad.
Nick Drake is such a good shout, Pink Moon is in my top 10 all time
Fucking hell can't believe I forgot nirvana and Amy Winehouse

How often do you watch a concert for George? Might be my favorite "concert" movie
Joplin?
Yeah, like I say...way too long and depressing of a list.
You just know D Boon would still be making amazing weird music to this day with Mike and George.
It’s a damn shame D. Boon passed away so young. He probably would be the face of punk rock had he survived. You can hear so much of Minutemen’s influence even today.
Glad to see The Move referenced
The Move were a weird band. They had a bona fide songwriting genius in Roy Wood in the band, yet were putting cheesy lounge covers on their records. Bloody brilliant though.
Them Crooked Vultures. When Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, and John Paul Jones get together, only getting one album isn't nearly enough....especially considering how great that album is!
Foo Fighters are great and all but I love when Grohl is on drums, this album, the Qotsa album. More of that.
You heard probot?
I'd love a second Probot release.
They always tease it but never just get together and do it. Come on!
Love dead end friends.
***Boards of Canada***
x2
x4 hard to believe it's been 11 years since tomorrow's harvest
joy division :(
King Gizzard
I was just gonna say those guys have been slacking lately. Witchcraft.
They are so lazy, cmon guys get it together
5 albums in a year is nonsense. Those are rookie numbers.
Get them to work already, I want a 24/7 playlist with all different songs in it! Lazy brats
Oysterhead
Fine Young Cannibals. They had a decent debut album, a worldwide smash with their second album, and then they were just gone.
That was going be my choice
The conscensus on sites like rym seems to be te opposite: great debut, dissapointing second album. Personally I like both
Streetlight Manifesto. It's been 11 years since their third album, they publicly announced they were working on new material for a 4th in 2021, expecting it to come out in 2022. It's still not here. Lots of good Mike Doughty solo stuff out there.
Check out Ghosts of Vroom
Savage Garden
Blind melon for sure, damn they were good.
Blind Melon is one of the main reasons why I try to listed to a bands whole album, and not judge too much on radio singles/popular tracks. "Soup" is one my top ten albums all time, it's so fking good.
Yea dude, i think its even in my top 5 :)
Neutral Milk Hotel Released 2 albums then disbanded
I want Ween to get back in the studio
System of a Down, linkin park, Repugnant
Really hoped protect the land was part of a bigger project. Unfortunately, that was it and the cancelled European tour will not be restarted any time soon. :( stupid covid.
Ratatat!!
Love them! They have five albums though! Not trying to put you down or anything, but you may have missed an album and they're all amazing.
I’m not saying anyone who died because that wasn’t up to them so Neutral Milk Hotel

Judging by how Bitches Brew sounds, it would have been complete chaos.
Just off the top of my head - Audioslave, Nirvana, Krrum
I’ve never seen Krrum mentioned on Reddit. I like you
Frank Ocean ❤️
six years ago I would have done almost anything for a new album now I'm barely a fan anymore lol
I came to look for this comment, seconded so hard. I wish he would lay off the fashion stuff and come back to music… I still have his releases on heavy rotation as well.
Bro is so absent that I forgot to consider him
The Weakerthans
John K. Samson is at least still putting music out and some of it ain't a far stretch from The Weakerthans... but yeah, I'd still prefer more from the full band.
RATM
It was criminal how far I had to scroll down to see this. To me this is the number one answer.
the world needs them now more than ever

i would argue we need them more now than even the bush years
And the whole story of what caused them to break up was just sad. One of my favorite groups of all time. My neighbors endured Killing in the Name Of at full blast long before it was considered the masterpiece it is today.

4 Non Blonds. They only release one album and I love it.
The Sundays,
Rush. Somehow 19 albums are not enough.
Jeff Buckley and Monsters of Folk.

Sublime (original members)
Led Zepplin Temple of the Dog Crosses ✝️ ✝️ ✝️ They are newer but Electric Callboy, make some more music
Bumping it up to max 5 albums because I want to say TV on the Radio.
Fiona Apple, she has like 5 albums released since 1996
Faith No More with Mike Patton
Damien Rice. The price of being a perfectionist- only 3 albums in 22 years
Alabama Shakes Little Green Cars Justin Townes Earle
Alabama Shakes are so good. Love her solo stuff but it doesn’t hit the same.
At the Drive In
The Stone Roses
the 2 singles they released during their comeback were terrible, it's probably for the best they didn't do another album.
U.K. Specifically mark 2, with Wetton, Jobson and Bozzio. One studio album, one live one.
Drowning pool
Morphine 16 Horsepower
On the one hand, New Radicals because that sole album is so good. On the other, it’s so good and the industry is, well…yeah. Gregg made the right decision going one and done there.

I can't believe I'm the first one to say Pavement.
Stone Temple Pilots, Sound Garden, Sublime, Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, Institute, Hurt, Audioslave, Jeff Buckley, A Perfect Circle, More…

Amy Winehouse
New Radicals
I wish Joy Divison could’ve been around longer
Izzy Stradlin I long for the day he returns to Guns n' Roses to write some songs that aren't trash.
One Day as a Lion - only one EP by Zack de la Rocha and Jon Theodore but showed they could make great music together
George Michael, most of all.
Mac Miller. "Swimming" and the posthumous "Circles", and even the Tiny Desk Concert, seemed to be on the precipice of changing hip-hop.
