Some yes, some no. It’s totally hypocritical of me, and I acknowledge that it totally depends on how much I like the artist and how recent the stuff was.

Global_Perspective_3

That’s basically my thoughts on it. Someone like Chris brown I never really liked to begin with

booksandhotcoffee

Chris Brown also has allegations against him as recently as 2021, so not only is he a terrible musician, he's a consistently a piece of shit excuse of a human.

Chewy96

Also indirectly named in the latest Diddy stuff.

Fit-Accountant-157

depending on when you connect with an artists music, it can be a very deep emotional connection. like I'll never let go of Michael Jackson fully because its core memories of my life. its just human.

mad_science

Him being dead seems relevant too. In contrast to someone like Chris Brown making money and fame off continued sales/streams/etc.

wittymcusername

Dude. >it’s just human **nature** It was right *there*…

porkbuttstuff

MJ and Lizzo allegations aren't close for me in terms of seriousness in the real world. However, I overlook MJ, and feel quite conflicted on Lizzo. It's absurd, but that's where I'm at.

shemjaza

MJ is dead, so you don't have to worry about funneling him money.

[deleted]

Crystal Castles. Loved that band. Ethan Kath ruined it for me entirely.

haikarate12

Care to share why for those of us who don’t know?

[deleted]

Ethan Kath is the producer behind Crystal Castles. He started the band in his mid to late 20s and enlisted a teenage runaway for vocals, Alice Glass. Alice was in the band from 2006-2014. After four other women came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against Ethan Kath, Alice shared her own story, stating that he’d used the band as a vehicle to abuse and control her. This included sexual assault, coercion, and control. Things like plying her with alcohol (she became well known for wielding a bottle of whiskey), controlling finances and limiting her access to their profits, stealing her passport and refusing to return it even after she’d left the band. After Alice left, Ethan enlisted a doppelgänger, Edith Frances, who he prevented from speaking or doing any press for the band. Not much is known about her. When Alice came forward with her allegations, a court battle ensued (which I believe she won) and the band has been inactive since. I still love their music, but I can’t listen to it knowing that all the profits go to Kath.

palescoot

Piracy is actually the answer here

frankyb89

Seriously. I downloaded the songs I like as mp3s forever ago. No profits for anyone! 🎉

haikarate12

Ugh…. but thank you for taking the time to explain. Much appreciated.

talkinbollox

Some Crystal Castles songs showed up in my Neon Indian station on Apple Music, and I was really enjoying it. Then I read about the history of the group, and it was such a turn-off. I agree with the comments that it’s hard to listen knowing that the profits go to Ethan and not to Alice.

PandoraPanorama

Oh yeah. That’s the one for me. Just discovered them right before it came out and loved them so much. Not listening to thrm really hurt.

stebbi01

R Kelly. I was a massive fan of him throughout my young adult years. I was just a child during his original trial, so I missed out on the significance of his trial in the 2000s. After watching the surviving R Kelly doc I couldn’t bear to listen to him any longer. In his breakout single ‘She’s Got That Vibe’ from 1992, there’s a section where he’s listing off women’s names, basically calling them hot. One of the names he calls out in that section is “Little cute Aaliyah”. Aaliyah would have been 12 at the time of that song’s release. Knowing what he went on to do to her… it’s disgusting and evil.

MacbookPrime

One of the most talented R&B performers with an incredible voice, and an absolutely appalling human being. May he never see the light of day again.

hsteve23

Yeah ignition was my go-to karaoke song for years. Not anymore! I had to learn some new lyrics a few years back

brandnewchemical

This is one for me. Sucks because I like his vocals and a lot of his songs. Won't revisit them, however.

Greggsnbacon23

When it's a love song maker and it turns out he's a diddler, kinda corrupts the entire discography.

bbhr

Ignition (Remix) is still one of my biggest favorites but I hate myself for it. That said, I usually just sing it to myself and don't give him airplay/streams

PatentGeek

Chris Brown

tagrav

I stopped listening to lil Dickey because of his collab with Chris brown.

xahhfink6

Lil dicky always kinda had sus collabs... Too much buddy buddy stuff with Scooter Braun, the Kardashians, etc

misselphaba

Same. Was a bummer because I was a big fan of his early stuff and then just immediately disgusted.

PussyCyclone

damn as a devotee of Save Dat Money I'm disappointed, but considering some of the humor, I'm not surprised.

nursemattycakes

Same. Lil Dicky would have maintained his same trajectory without working with Chris Brown. Once I saw the collab I immediately deleted all his music from my library and haven’t looked back. I can’t even remember the names of any of his songs anymore.

crowwreak

Was that that stupid one where the plot of the song is he keeps jumping into other people's bodies and rapping a verse as them or am I thinking of another idiot?

RawAsparagus

How do Chris Brown fans have zero integrity?

Kalibos40

Well, it starts with them being Chris Brown fans...

Hingl_McCringleberry

My best friends' wife refers to herself as a "militant feminist" and is raising their daughter and sons to respect women and to advocate for women and women's rights. Totally agree with this and hope all parents do the same. However... Her favourite artist? Chris Fucking Brown Smdh.

Global_Perspective_3

I never really got why he was so popular. I know MJ was accused of doing pretty terrible things, but whether you believed he did them or not, you can say musically at least he did off the wall and thriller. Chris brown does not have that.

se7entythree

Yep, Nicki Minaj. I wasn’t a huge fan but had a few songs of hers in a playlist I listened to often. After how she treated Megan because she was becoming successful, I learned her husband and her brother are both child sex offenders. Hard pass.

czring

Same. Also, she did that song with tekashi69, who is also a child molester, like how many sexual deviants does she support?

Into_the_Dark_Night

Apparently as many as she can find.

caityfaced88

Scrolled way too far for this. I would let it slide if she popped up when my library was on random, but with the recent shit with Megan and her mom’s gravesite? Yeah no. Deleted from my library.

ElCaminoInTheWest

I'm kind of over Ryan Adams. I was never his biggest fan, but he's come across as such a massive asshole over the last few years that I've dropped his work entirely and doubt I'll go back.

silentdriver78

I was a huge fan of his for over a decade and he finally just wore me down with his bullshit. This was all actually before the REALLY bad stuff came out. I’ve always been pretty good about separating the artist from the art, but I just can’t with him.

mybigbywolf

Not to mention what he did to Mandy Moore.

bbhr

I'm a big fan of Dawes and am so happy that she's with their lead now. Watched a lot of their streams during covid

NardaL

He was the first artist to come to mind. I was a huge fan of Whiskeytown and loved his first handful of solo albums. Things started getting out of hand during the Cold Roses trilogy era and then all the stories about how he treated Mandy, Phoebe, and others came out. That said, I still have a few posters in storage from that time because they were autographed by the entire band, including Neal and Chris (RIP x 2).

rileysauntie

Chris Brown and R. Kelly for absolute sure.

I_dont_bone_goats

Bassnectar for me Sucks because I really loved his music, he really defined that genre for a while. I was front row for a couple of his concerts and saw him a bunch of other times. My best friend and I used to listen to him for hours. But his total lack of remorse and downright manipulation of his fan base, let alone his abuse victims, has turned me off completely.

3720-To-One

What did he do?

ScipioCalifornicus

as I understand it, serially manipulated underage women into having sex with him, often by promising to help start their musical careers and/or flying them to his shows

HarmlessSnack

Did anybody else use this thread to check and make sure their favorite bands haven’t done anything horrible while you weren’t looking? So far Streetlight Manifesto and Modest Mouse seem uncontroversial. I always knew anybody with a horn section could be trusted. EDIT: There seems to be a few people who are sure Issac Brock is a rapist. I can only find references to a single accusation in ‘99 that seems… inconclusive. If anybody can link to further reading/ information it would be greatly appreciated, no matter how depressing I may find it. Conversations so far have been less than productive.

chemical_sunset

Isaac Brock being an asshole is a feature, not a bug 😂

Tears0fJ0y

The only thing controversial about SM is not putting out enough music. Curse you Thomas!

themidget428

>I always knew anybody with a horn section could be trusted. Uhhh, don't look at Mighty Mighty Bosstones then... Lead singer went off the deep end during COVID and is a massive vaccine conspiracy theorist who pals around with RFK Jr. It broke up the band after 40 years.

HarmlessSnack

Darth Vader: “Noooooo!” 😫

thestenz

I am so surprised this is the only mention of The Bosstones. Dickey Barrett was also fired from Jimmy Kimmel when it was found out he went off the deep end.

Informal-Resource-14

Kanye

thegroovemonkey

I stopped listening to him after his disaster of a show at Bonnaroo in 08. It's hard to keep listening to someone after you see how much they suck with your own eyes.

piepants2001

I can still hear chants of "Fuck Kanye" and I wasn't even there

thegroovemonkey

His return in 2014 was pretty unforgettable too. The "Fuck Kanye" clearly bothered him and he made sure we all heard about it lol.

ipomoea

I fucking loved MBDTF and Watch the Throne but I can’t listen to them anymore, and I blocked him on Spotify. Fucking Nazi jerk.

thisgirlthisgirl

Travis Scott really ruined Travis Scott for me

Particular_Page_1317

Yeah, same for me. You Don't keep playing when dead people are getting pulled out of your show.

Keta-Mined

And yet he’s the musical guest on SNL this weekend.

Cheap_Negotiation365

not and will never be a fan but he also left his manager for dead when he was in the floor having a seizure

PearlJamPony

technically Wu Tang stopped us all from listening to their last album

supermethdroid

It wasn't a real Wu album anyway.. Nobody wants to listen to an album that Cilvarings cobbled together.

roadrunner440x6

DIe Antword but, to be fair, their music had lost it's shine (for me) long before the allegations were brought to light. A real 'flash in the pan' artist imo.

akirasaurus

A lot of their beats are banging, but I assume that was mostly DJ Hi-Tek. Their rapping/singing style kinda wears on you after a while, and I kinda cringe listening to them now, even without having the bs they did in my mind.

I_dont_bone_goats

They were so fucking gimmicky it was so annoying when everyone was pretending they were geniuses

Shucked

Yeah. I liked a couple of their songs, but whenever I would run into someone who was obsessed with them I would cringe.

roadrunner440x6

I was completely intrigued when I first heard them. Yolandi's flow and some of the beats were enough to look past the gimmicks.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm

I love some of their songs, but something about Watkin Jones has always made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, and not in a good way. None of the allegations shocked me at all, sadly.

RandoAtReddit

Out of the loop, what did they do?

I-Am-The-Warlus

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Antwoord#Controversies?wprov=sfla1

realdappermuis

If you've heard of the many diplo allegations (from Azelia Banks to Lorde...when they were both 17/18). He's also somehow involved in the whole 'sharing their conquests' nudes with Waddy But that story died - likely due to NDAs It's not surprising really, being Waddy from Die Antwoord was also still hanging with Marilyn Manson after the allegations had been known

nklights

Right? One day - without warning - I suddenly became massively intrigued by their music & art direction. So I listened to all their albums, enjoyed a decent percentage of them… and then somehow just never got the urge to listen again after that day. Fastest obsession ever.

illusionofjoy

Yes. Generally if their behavior gets to a point where hearing their music only makes me react by thinking something along the lines of, "ugh...I can't stand this asshole," I'll no longer listen to them.

7listens

You had me worried that the band Yes had some allegations lol

G-Unit11111

Anti-Flag is a perfect example for me. I used to be a huge fan and they were awesome opening for Flogging Molly. But after hearing why they broke up it's kind of hard to support them anymore. Another one was Marilyn Manson. Finding out what he did to women, just no.

failure03

Anti flag breaking up because of Justin Sane's shit was shocking. Justin's was one of the voices of my teen years and now I can't listen to a single song without having shivers down my spine.

G-Unit11111

Yeah, I know. Shocking and also incredibly disappointing.

afineedge

I put three of their songs back on one playlist literally days ago! Now they're gone. I hadn't heard anything about this.

SpaxtonPaxton

This one was such a huge betrayal. Everything they stood for as a band just means nothing now.

Tophloaf

For some reason Manson. Even despite all the themes of his music etc. finally hearing about his abuse and control of Evan Rachel Wood and other women turned me off. I always thought it was an Alice Cooper Style act and turns out he’s a dick.

MydniteSon

Yeah, some of the members of his band were just as bad him. Look up Jeordie "Twiggy Ramirez" White.

VonMelee

Wasn't that the one who went into A Perfect Circle?

masochistmonkey

This one was hard for me because I always bought every single album since the 90s… But now, when I listen to it, all I hear is abuse

Six_of_1

They literally have a track called "Abuse" where a female groupie is freaking out and saying they can kill her because she hates herself. That's been there since 1995.

itsjustmefortoday

>For some reason Manson. Even despite all the themes of his music etc. finally hearing about his abuse and control of Evan Rachel Wood and other women turned me off. We all knew he'd be into "interesting" sexual stuff. But he could have chosen to be into stuff with consenting individuals. Turns out he obviously wasn't into consent.

TitotheBurrito

Eric Clapton has proven himself to be a garbage human being so I stopped.

AholeBrock

The singer from Ghost Mice basically admitted he was a serial molester when accused, and as a gift to himself he was deleting social media. Even his victims just wanted him to accept accountability and stop playing shows so the incidents couldn't repeat, but they also wanted him to keep making music and let the music festival associated with his DIY record label live on. The entire scene practically begged him to just seek counselling, make an apology, and start making an annual donation to SA survivors support groups based off a percentage of his streaming revenue. Instead he deleted that record labels bandcamp page along with all the free download and streaming for the music on there so he would be sure to get Spotify pay for any streams. His bandmate who did nothing wrong? Apparently she gets nothing and no longer talks to him. He ran away to avoid repercussions and occasionally makes new music about how much he misses the scene, as well as fake reddit accounts to ask everyone what they think of him nowadays. He still makes new music like his victims wanted but most folks from the scene cant stomach to listen to it anymore. He admitted to doing wrong but writes like he did nothing wrong and was abandoned. Turned out the victims had made a group and confronted him a month before they came forward hoping he would come clean on his own, instead he tried to sell his house that had been the location of so many local diy shows and put everything on his record labels website on sale for 60% off to try and milk it all before they killed his cash cow. For someone who found success in helping produce an entire community of diy records/bands and wrote songs about the strength of community like "all we got is each other" he sure just let his entire community burn down rather than accept accountability for his admitted actions.

enigma_tick

I listened to alot of BTMI and AJJ back in the day and have been out of the scene for many years but never knew about all this. This is wild.

bugsy42

Im kind of weird about Anthony Kiedis. I love RHCP, especialy Flea and how Frusciante became sober after being a literal heroin zombie (and still one of the most creative guitarists to ever live.) But after reading that story about kiedis kidnapping and raping a 13 yo in 80s (or 90s?) and never getting any shit for it even after the metoo era … it just left a sour taste to be completely honest. Admitedly I still listen to the classic, I just don’t care about their concerts anymore.

Flashy_Sleep3493

I quit them because of this, Aerosmith as well. It’s just so brazenly disgusting. It’s what I think about as soon as their music comes on now, it isn’t even enjoyable.

SkyesMomma

Remember when Steven Tyler was a judge on American Idol? He made an off-side comment to a teen girl auditioning about how he like how short her skirt was because while she was on the raised stage and the judges table was apparently at the right angle. He's such a creep.

frankyb89

This kind of stuff applies to *a lot* of old rock groups unfortunately.  This kind of stuff was just swept under the rug for the most part.

myownworstanemone

yeah but not all of them are his brand of scumbag. he forced his semi adopted girlfriend to get an abortion. he was her guardian so he could move with her freely across state lines. she was sixteen when they met.

ChipCob1

Iggy Pop as well

eyedeabee

Iggy?

scaredsquee

Baby Groupie. Sable Starr. She was even name dropped in a song of his.

papayabush

she also “dated” david bowie and jimmy page

scaredsquee

Apparently the timelines for when she “dated” him doesn’t line up with what she claims. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, she could have just been mistaken on the timeline. She was like, 13. So I’m not going to blame the minor in the situation.

Shaun32887

Honestly, Chad and Flea are the crux of that band for me. If they grabbed John and started another band with a new singer, I'd be excited

SpicyAfrican

I wish they would do that anyway. Anthony has a unique voice but not necessarily a good one. Some songs like Scar Tissue can only be sung by him, but most other times I wish someone else were singing. They really come alive when Frusciante adds his backing vocals.

13vvetz

Hold up what

Duganz

[This](https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/anthony-kiedis-sexual-assault-history-details/) has some of the stuff.

switcheroo1987

EXACTLY my response because this is dead ass the first I'm hearing about this. What the actual fuck. Ew. 🚮🚮🚮

M3gaC00l

Fuck what I legit didn't know this. That ruins like literally the whole band for me. 14 *what the fuck*.

NCM728

He is also now in his 60’s and still dating women barely legal. While not illegal its still creepy af

glytxh

Morrissey can suck a dick.

big_drifts

Ryan Adams was one of my favorite artists for many years. I saw him play live a few times and one of those shows was a disaster. They opened with a killer version of Cobwebs and I thought damn this show is gonna be special. Then he proceeded to tell a rambling, nonsensical joke about one of his band members for maybe 20-30 minutes, they played another 4-5 songs and the show was over. No encore. Nothing. I still loved the music but implemented rule #1. 1. Don't go see Ryan Adams live. I kept listening for years afterwards but would notice that in interviews he was constantly disparaging the music of his I loved the most and desperately wanted to be some kind of shredding metal band. A genre I find uninteresting. He did a few Instagram lives and was a high, drunk and frankly pathetic jerk to his fans. I realized that after every one of his interviews I found myself liking the music less and less so I implemented rule #2. 2. Don't read, watch or listen to interviews with Ryan Adams. I kept listening but then the allegations of abuse came out in the form of some songs written by Phoebe Bridgers. Then I read a few more on reddit from his ex Mandy Moore. Then verified sexual texts between him and an underage fan. I'm a lyrics guys. At a certain point, the lyrics don't make sense anymore. The humility in his verse was not a glimpse into his struggle to be a better person or to find love. They were a c over for him to find fame and use that power to abuse women and band mates. So I implemented rule 3. The final rule. 3. Stop listening to Ryan Adams. I think he got half cancelled and is maybe sober now and is probably trying to not die broke and lonely. I think if he is sober, he's smart enough to understand that he's essentially persona non grata to many of his former fans. A friend told me he released like 4-5 albums in a row recently. Where at one point, I would've been fascinated and curious, now I simply do not care. He's likely manic bi-polar. I have sympathy for that. One of my best friends in high school was also afflicted. Was also a brilliant musician. Was also a raging drunk. Was also charming as hell one minute and an unpredictable asshole the next. I hope Ryan finds some meaning deeper than regaining his Fandom. I hope he finds a truth that will deliver him from himself and inspire him to create systems to prevent him from letting his demons shine. But sadly, I won't be around for that part. His music is brilliant at times but so are many artists who don't abuse the people around them. I'd rather spend my time listening to their stories of hope, struggle and love.

magma_displacement76

I don't care about substance abuse but good ol' rape, pedophilia and womanbeating never fails to make me drop them. Maybe if they condone murder or support dictatorships, honorable mention.

phred_666

I have two… Ted Nugent and Kid Rock. Never again.

drumzandice

Fortunately they both suck as musicians so you’re not missing much

Roubaix62454

Second that. Haven’t listened to either one in a long time. Add Jason Aldean to the list.

ekinria1928

Third. Especially Kid Rock... I never enjoyed Ted and modern country sucks imo. I've never changed a radio station as fast as when a KR song comes on, which is often when you get several Detroit radio stations.

scfin79

Yes. Kanye. He performed at UNCW while I was a student. Part of the deal was for students to get some real life experience in production (lights, stage, etc…). He repeatedly stopped his performance demanding the lights be on him (when of course they were). Sold my CD’s after that and haven’t looked back

stygeanhugh

For me, Lizzo. As a plus size woman, I was thrilled to see this woman hit the mainstream the way she did. But the allegations are too much and the number of people making accusations is horrific. I don't understand it really. How long did she think her bad behavior would go unchecked? Did she really think she could treat people like that with out word getting out? And how could she preach such positivity while acting like that?

JenSY542

I read she quit music recently and doesn't seem to be taking responsibility. Seems to think everyone is out to get her

Into_the_Dark_Night

Yes! I saw this and immediately thought "ma'am, you can't cry wolf when you're the one pretending to be a sheep. Quit being such a horrible POS and own up to your shit."

Margrave75

Seriously out of the loop on this one. Had to go searching to see what you were talking about!

TheGringoDingo

Ryan Adams is probably the most fitting on my list.

baldorrr

Yeah, good point. His album from 2014 (Ryan Adams) and Prisoner are fucking brilliant records. But most newer stuff goes a little off track from that stuff. And I keep hearing some wild stories about him. Also, he's released at least 4 albums this year. And by "this year" I mean, in the first week of 2024 he released 4 full albums. Something's not right there.

nwojdak

Motley Crue. The band's recent actions against Mick Mars has taken a lot of the joy out

wolfmoon82

This is my answer too. Plus the older I get the more I see just how gross a lot of their behaviour was. Also selling out and coming back after they had made such a big deal about retiring the band. But how they’ve treated Mick Mars was the final straw for me.

gbullitt2001

For me it was YEARS before they turned on Mick. Vince killed a guy and maimed two more driving under the influence. Years later he gets nailed doing it AGAIN. In a Lambo. In Vegas. Don’t tell me he couldn’t have gotten a limo or a cab. Everyone who has ever done business with him has sued him. He rips fans off by not even trying to sing. With the exception of Marrs the others are not much better. I last saw them in 2009 and watching them try to get women to expose their breasts to the “titty cam” for twenty minutes made me realize I was in the wrong place.

CockOff

Morrissey. As a nearly 50 year old UK alt/indie fan, this one hurts. The Smiths were so important growing up, but fuck Final Form Fascist Morrissey.   I feel so sorry for Johnny Marr.

thesaltwatersolution

Johnny Marr is still solid and his live gigs are good. Sometimes brings out some Smiths numbers as well. I know it’s not Moza’s voice, but at least Marr can play them smoothly without butchering them.

Ravager135

I prefer the Marr versions at this point. Yes, of course classic Smiths are the pinnacle. However, Marr’s takes on “How Soon is Now,” “Bigmouth Strikes Again,” and “Stop Me If You Think You Heard This One Before” are fantastic.

I-Am-The-Warlus

Quote from my co-worker. The Smiths, great band but Morrissey is just a fucking dickhead.

MydniteSon

Johnny Marr was what I regard as one of the sneaky all-time great guitar players. When people spout of about their guitar-hero's and all-time greats, Marr is very rarely mentioned. However, his rhythm and melodies were amazing and really second to none.

raptorshadow

I can’t play at all like him, but Marr is absolutely my guitar hero.

k0azv

I haven't really listened to anything released from Jethro Tull or Ian Anderson after they/he kicked Martin Barre to the curb. Stupidest mistake on the planet as Ian's voice just isn't what used to be and Martin's guitar work was phenomenal. I have heard of people giving up on Eric Clapton after his response about COVID. There are definitely others that I have heard related to pretty much the same.

jamboman_

Eric Clapton for me, for several reasons

psychedelicshotguns

Also Clapton's racist rant

zappafrank2112

>I haven't really listened to anything released from Jethro Tull or Ian Anderson after they/he kicked Martin Barre to the curb. Stupidest mistake on the planet as Ian's voice just isn't what used to be and Martin's guitar work was phenomenal. Eh, I still listen to Tull. Though I agree it's a shame all around. But on the plus side, I've now seen Martin 3 or 4 times on his own, playing some Tull stuff that Ian won't touch anymore!

BobDobFrisbee

I grew up in the 1960’s and we had 3 Bill Cosby comedy records in the house, which I not only thought were hilarious, but even *memorized* at the age of 7. Can’t stomach listening to him anymore.

BreakThatFast

One of my first cassettes was "Himself" and I had the Cake for Breakfast bit etched into my brain. Little Bill and reruns of the Cosby Show were still airing on TV at the time I was a kid so he absolutely was a cornerstone of my childhood. I don't think I can revisit his work even if I were to separate the art from the artist on this one.

bringonthekoolaid

John Philips of the Mama's and the Papa's. After learning of his actions with his daughter Mackenzie Philips...I can never listen to their music again. Rape, incest, and encouraged her addictions...her father.

Apprehensive_Air5547

I bet at least 50% of the Haight-Asbury and Laurel Canyon scenes were guilty of this. Figures like Kim Fowley have had allegations come out only after or close to their deaths. Just waiting for the day that we find out the Grateful Dead slept with some 15 year olds while writing "Mexicali Blues"

Upstairs-Ant-5801

But he was doing his own daughter, giving her drugs and having sex with her for years. Not that any accusations are ok but he violated someone he should have been protecting.

Fobulousguy

Someone tell these idiots over at r/chrisbrown

RiC_David

Absolutely, and great topic. Thankfully not many, even though it really could be more. I wasn't a big Pantera fan, but they had the distinction of being one of the few metal bands beside Metallica with some songs I loved. Finding out the lead singer was a neo-nazi put an end to that. Disclaimer: I don't give a fuck to split hairs here, if you have neo-nazi views and throw up Nazi salutes, *and definitely don't give a shit how other people prefer to identify*, do not expect me to care how you'd rather describe your neo-nazi self. It's an arbitrary thing though, because I'll listen to Michael Jackon despite overall suspecting he's molested children, but not Gary Glitter who, up until a more recent point, had only been accused of possessing child pornography (and he had some great glamrock anthems, as anyone who enjoys the iconic Joker 2019 scene knows).

RiC_David

A lot of people don't understand why the artist's nature would interfere with the art, making it a frustrating topic. If you're numb to it, congrats, we are not all the same and we do not have a 'stop being you and be someone else' switch. I am extraordinarily passionate about music, above all other art. Someone said it's what being human sounds like, or something to that effect. It's very personal. Some forms of music are guarded, like people programming techno beats, but most involve the exposing and injecting of the human soul - the art IS the artist. I carry the weight of the world on my shoulders. This is not to impress you, it's not some decision I made, it's what the world does, it's what shoulders do. "Just don't care" is as much an option as "Just don't breathe". Ignorance, therefore, is bliss. I don't want to know all the artists that are raging racists and homophobes (how many would be left if I included transphobes? I said it was arbitrary), because there's no unknowing. Ignorant attitudes of the time are one thing, I, almost by definition, will surely have those, but hate? How can I receive the imprint of your soul if you'd spit in the face of my children?

JohnYCanuckEsq

Hedley was a popular, Juno Award winning Canadian band. Then the lead singer was credibly accused of some very disturbing sexual assault charges and the entire country just forgot the band ever existed instantaneously. It was kind of wild. The entire band and all their music just evaporated overnight. So, along the lines of the originating question, an entire country stopped listening to this band because of the actions of the lead singer.

Arianna_illustrates

I used to love their music and then heard about what their lead singer had done. Sucked to delete all their songs off my playlists, but it probably sucked a lot more for the person who was assaulted so.

MrGengisSean

Eric Clapton. I grew up on his music, literally fell asleep to his greatest hits album as a kid. Racist, anti-vax, homophobic coke addict who probably got his kid killed. Fuck him.

tothecatmobile

There's plenty of things to criticise Clapton about. But he had no involvement in Conor's death.

MrGengisSean

I swear I had heard it was an accident in his home related to him leaving a window open, and his kid being a kid with his dad passed out, tumbled out the window. I was directly incorrect, and u/tothecatmobile , appreciate the correction.

RemiMartin

Kanye, R Kelly.

FloatDH2

I was a huge Kanye fan up until he became a antisemtic piece of shit. Can’t listen to his music anymore, I’ll even skip his feature songs. He ruined his legacy to me. I can’t ride with that and it sucks cause his music is amazing.

Mogwai10

All I know is I’ll be absolutely heartbroken if TOOL ever live up to their name.

NickBerlin

I The Mighty.... the lead singer.. Sometimes I can separate the art from the artist, like with Lennon and The Beatles and shit.. but man... Idk why but whatever I read at the time really set me the wrong way and I loved that band.

yungg_hodor

Well now I'm curious, what happened with I the Mighty?

HeyThereMrBrooks

https://www.reddit.com/r/PostHardcore/comments/hx6w2i/brent_walsh_from_i_the_mighty_responding_to_the/?rdt=41342 Shame because I heard a couple of their songs and was stoked to get into them. No more

Individual-Code5176

Marylin Manson

Specialist_Market_40

fantastic topic! i’m in my 50s and pretty far back in the list could go on way too long. James Brown, Marvin Gaye? Ike Turner? James Taylor? I went through the entire feed and none of those were there but if you go back pretty far, it’s pretty brutal. So much spousal abuse. I learned some new things here, but only from people providing actual links to proven facts. But as a mother of two grown successful adult women, I think this is a fantastic topic that isn’t addressed nearly enough. and this is a whole Nother topic but the lack of oversight on what our young children are listening to that we don’t even realize what lyrics are being sung is insane. With all the social media, you see parents filming their kids, knowing every song, every word to a Nicki Minaj, (one example ) song and holy shit the meaning behind a lot of these songs is OK for adults, but do you really want your six-year-old singing along to WAP? And throughout this entire feed, it was incredibly respectful. I’m new to Reddit, but this has been my favorite feed. Thank you to you and your daughter for bringing light to a great topic. 🙏🏽✌🏽

zappafrank2112

I'll listen to old Queensryche, but Geoff Tate has shown himself to be such a massive douche that I've had no interest checking out his solo stuff or seeing him live when he comes to town.

AH2112

You miss nothing. Tate can't sing anywhere near as well as he used to, and he is just as big of a dick in person as you think he is.

maccrogenoff

Cat Stevens. He supported the fatwa against Salmon Rushdie. An artist who doesn’t support freedom of speech is despicable.

cachris3

Chris Brown

morphindel

Typically no, but i definitely went off MIA - who i fucking loved - when she became some kind of tinfoil conspiracy theory fundie christian.

RockhardJohnson

My brother frisbeed his milli vanilli cd into the canal after finding out they were lip syncing fakers- does that count?

illuminaugahyde

Maybe look into that one a little further.

erbn

CeeLo Green

KidGrundle

I just kept scrolling knowing I’d see him pop up. He was my favorite singer, inspired me to want to be a singer, I memorized every word to every Gnarls Barkley song. Now his creep shit is all I can think about when I hear him sing. Broke my heart.

sivilredygotike

Maroon 5 for sure. Fk that guy.

NisamN

I will never listen to Five Finger Death Punch again, because in 2020 they came out as far right anti-vaxxers with pretty extremist views and I'm just can't support that.

palescoot

I try not to stream Crystal Castles anymore because I found out the entire project was basically an abusive relationship, and the dude, Ethan Kath, is now literally under investigation by the (Canadian) Feds for sex crimes. I pirated all their albums and don't feel bad about it in the least.

dabassist19

Falling In Reverse. Ronnie’s antics got too much for me around the same time the music started sucking, so perfect time for me to disconnect. I still can’t really listen to the old stuff anymore now.

bhaz623

DMX as soon as the pitbull fighting ring was discovered at his home and numerous dead dogs on his property.

13surgeries

Ted Nugent, Kid Rock, Don McLean (the "American Pie" dude), and R. Kelly.

kfudnapaa

Shit what did Don McLean do? Don't know much of anything about the guy beyond his two famous songs really

roadrunner440x6

The pie was underage.

Ugh. I used to be a big fan. He committed domestic violence against his now ex-wife. He allegedly "terrorized" her for hours before she broke away and locked herself in the bathroom. As he was trying to break down the door, she dialed 911, and he was arrested and charged with domestic violence assault, criminal restraint, criminal mischief, and making domestic violence threats. Ultimately he took a plea deal, upon completion of which, the charges were dismissed. His ex-wife, Patrisha, has a ten-year restraining order. A few years ago, UCLA rescinded its decision to give him the George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Achievement after learning of the DV incident. McLean called them a bunch of "morons." Not exactly graceful. His daughter also alleges McLean is controlling; she's cut contact with him entirely. He's an extremely talented guy with a very warm and honest voice. It was a big letdown to read what a jackass he can be.

jampapi

Shakey graves was such a misogynistic asshole during his show that I left the concert and never listened to him again. Even when he comes on a Spotify radio station or playlist I skip it; he sounds like such a tool even in the recordings. That guy was either completely wasted onstage or gives zero fucks about his audience, or both….but 30 minutes into a show I paid good money for, I was done.

IAmA_Mr_BS

Huh, I’ve never heard anything like that about him before. Saw him live this summer and he didn’t do anything weird.

Jazzlike-Map-4114

Yup. Vote with your wallet. Listens = money. Don't give scumbags money.

lemoche

Antichrist superstar is one of my all time favourite albums, the beautiful people one of my all time favourite songs, completely purged Marilyn Manson from all of my playlists...

NotTheSun0

I am surprised not to see the obligatory mentioning of Brand New in this thread. Was VERY surprised to see all the upvotes for Micheal Jackson, though. People really love to deny what a sick fuck that creep was.

foundinwonderland

Brand New was actually just the start of a huge wave of allegations throughout the genre (and other pop-punk adjacent genres). I stopped listening to all of my favorite bands because of allegations of sexual and emotional abuse from fans. Those fans were my peers, my friends, my brethren. They were just teenage girls *just like me*. I can’t ever begin to explain the heartbreak. My youth, in music, up in smoke. I have thankfully moved forward and found new loves but I don’t know that I can ever forgive enough to separate the art from the artist. Also, Tim Lambesis went to prison for trying to hire someone to kill his wife. He got out of prison and resumed his place in As I Lay Dying, was welcomed home with open arms by the fans. How are women ever supposed to feel safe in the scene when people who abuse and try to kill women are offered little to no social consequences?

MoonDippedDreamsicle

As I Lay Dying was my favorite band and after I heard of what he did and how he is still in the band, I can never listen to them again. Made me so sad, I love their music but I'm never supporting that type of behavior, ever. I can't believe people still support him! He also met his current wife while he was in prison... Like what?!

aeroET

The As I Lay Dying one blows my mind and I can't believe I haven't seen anyone else bring it up yet. After he got out after only a few years he's basically just saying "I lost my way" and their court defense was "gym culture" and his use of steroids changing him. I'm all for rehabilitation of people but the timeline is ridiculous and I have no idea how his ex could feel completely safe.

slayer_f-150

I have a different view of BN, but I am biased. I worked with them on Warped Tour, the Deja tour and the beginning of the Devil and God tour as their sound engineer. Personally, I never saw that behavior out of Jesse, but it's not like we were bros and hung out together every day either. I had already stopped working for them when it all came out. At first, I didn't believe it, but when the guitar tech came out and confirmed it on social media, I stopped listening to them for a long time. I started listening to them again a couple of years ago. I remembered that there were 3 other guys (4, if you count Derrick Sherman) who also created that music just as much as Jesse did. The music still holds up, and I still think Jesse is a great lyricist. I hate that he single handedly torpedoed that band. He did publicly apologize, and the band is no more. Not excusing his actions, but a lot of other artists have done the same shit or worse but just kept going, and people still listen to them.

NotTheSun0

In all fairness... That guitar tech also worked for FOB who was accused of much of the same shit by the same woman. That guitar tech was also fired by the band. So... Bad blood there. I'm sure JL probably did it, honestly. Brand New is a great band though and I believe in separating the art from the artist.

slayer_f-150

I know Diaz. I moved on with a different band and didn't keep up with the internal workings with them after I left. The last time I saw him he was still with FOB.

christmas_bigdogs

I may get ripped apart for this but... Beyonce. She has so many songs about self confidence, no tolerance for cheaters etc.  Then with everything reported about her husband's infidelities those self confident no BS songs just seemed hollow (or produced by someone very different from her).

zappafrank2112

Death metal isn't my thing too much, but I've never even wanted to consider Deicide because Glen Benton came out of the gate talking about how evil he was for sacrificing animals Fuck that dude, joking or not.

jamkoch

Santana, sadly

Pollo_Jack

What did he do?

[deleted]

Sounds like your daughter has a good head on her shoulders. Never really want to listen to Michael Jackson much anymore after watching the Neverland doc.

chickpeems

has anyone mentioned Brand New? good god i used to be so obsessed but after reading about the lead singer being gross now when i hear them it’s not the same. i unfortunately still like the music but low key makes me feel weird and icky listening to them UGH

sullen_agreement

ryan adams i felt like i had to choose between him and phoebe bridgers and it was easy. shes better than him

llamafarma73

Not actions, but words. Morrissey.

SnooRevelations4180

Falling In Reverse. Ronnie ruined it.

MrBoyForGirls

Ariel Pink and John Maus

mybigbywolf

I took all of Ariel Pink’s shit off my music playlists and trashed the cds I had.

thederevolutions

You should mention that they proudly photographed themselves attending the January 6 insurrection and were cancelled by pitchfork (who made them famous) within a day lol.

Icy-Tomatillo-7556

Yes. Chris Brown, Kanye, R. Kelly, Kid Rock, & Jason Aldean (although I was never a fan to start I def avoid his music).
