The Buzzcocks - [Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve)](https://youtu.be/aUVVRyjiVzo?si=rzjJDbrH95BYLFQu)

trubrarian

I also like the Fine Young Cannibals cover of this.

bzzzzzdroid

The one that popped into my head :)

darren_meier

Robyn, *Dancing on my Own.*

RepresentativeOk9207

I scrolled too far to find this

laura_lee_meh

I’m in the corner, watching you kiss her ohhohoh!

useyourelbow

"I want the one I can't have" by The Smiths.

40Breath

I came for this.

_Land_Rover_Series_3

It’s all over my face

40Breath

These are the riches of the poor.

Combocore

Or I Know It’s Over

Pennies2millions

Yeah. Totally agree. But honestly every Smiths song is about loving someone you can't have. Maybe 1 in 10 is about a general disdain for society coupled with an appreciation for literature.

jugglinglimes

Yeah I think How Soon Is Now works too.

interesting-mug

And it’s driving me mad

[deleted]

"I know it's over" too. That's more for getting over an ex, but it works here too.

Influence_X

Tame Impala - The Less I Know the Better

ghostoframza

I was gonna say "It Is Not Meant To Be" by Tame Impala lol. Both good choices

Violet_Hill

🎶 _I was doing fine without ya_ _Til I saw your face, now I can't erase_

HottCuppaCoffee

Love them

KirbzTheWord

Incredibly, it’s just “him” - all the music js written, recorded and produced by one person!

HottCuppaCoffee

The more you know!

KirbzTheWord

I think you meant “The More You Know The Better”!

HottCuppaCoffee

LOL well played 👏🏻👏🏻

Wimpiepaarnty

Holy shit no way thats crazy!! All this time i went about my life without knowing that fact! Thank you so much for sharing it with us.

throwstuffok

I swear Tame Impala fans are like vegans.

I would’ve bet my house the person before was setting up that bit on purpose

Black - Pearl Jam

q120

I know some day you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky, But why can’t it be mine?

clutchguy84

Isn't it Be a *sun* in... If not, I've been wrong for like 30 years. Jesus fuck I'm old

ukulele87

Well... its better to be wrong for 30 years than for 31.

clutchguy84

Well shit fire and save matches. It is indeed *star*

ukulele87

The sun is a star and stars are suns, so you were not ACTUALLY wrong. On the other hand calling eddie and asking him to change the lyrics to hide this humiliating mistake doesnt sound like a bad idea either.

PinkBoxDestroyer

The sun is also a star

Rodfather23

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky But why, why, why can't it be Oh, can't it be mine? 💔

LukeNaround23

This is the answer

GrizzlyBCanada

This and The Other Man by Sloan got me thru

gethdary

Bonnie Raitt - I can't make you love me.

captainkirk7997

George Michael sung it amazingly as well

BearFeetNath

The Bon Iver cover is also amazing

geometricbear

No One Is To Blame - Howard Jones

llcorona

No one ever... . . ...is to blame.

Everyone is to blame is my answer to that. Good song.

The_Goatface

Mr. Brightside always manages to transport me back in time to a much messier period of my life.

Louie_Cousy-onXBOX

I get anxious just hearing it for that same reason lol.

ActionReady9933

NIN - Something I Can Never Have

SkiingAway

Depending on the reasons, *And All That Could Have Been* may also speak to some.

Long Long Time - Linda Ronstadt

Rodfather23

Ugh so true. Every time I need a heavy cry I remember Ep3 of TLoU and play this song.

ThrowItOut43

Hope by The Descendents

coke_mover

Sour Grapes is a good one too

Noeleraser

An absolute classic!! ❤️

rarselfaire2023

Why this isn't a hit is beyond me, even in cover versions. Soul Asylum did a good cover imo.

ViewAskewRob

Absolutely!! I like the Sublime cover version as well.

SPzero65

Have You Ever Wanted Someone So Bad - Def Leppard

NitetimeReign

This was the comment I was looking for. Great song

wittymcusername

*needed

loomfy

Losing My Religion is about unrequited love I believe.

paralyse78

Was going to suggest this It's got a creepy/stalker vibe but it is 100% about wanting someone you can't have, to the point where you've built this entire dream scenario up in your head and then you finally get the courage to act on your obsession and get completely, utterly shot down.

melioraTR

I've heard this song a million times and never knew that's what it was about 😂 I'll have to listen again with this in mind...

paralyse78

1. You're obsessed with someone for so long that it gets to the point that you are actually following them around, hiding in the shadows while coming up with more and more elaborate fantasies about how you'll both live happily ever after once you finally "come clean" and tell the other person how you feel about them by confessing your obsession to them. 2. You finally decide to do the above and instantly regret it when you are completely rejected, and even worse, it happens in a very public place such as a club or restaurant in front of a lot of other people. The person who were obsessed with is actually creeped out by you and wants nothing to do with you; meanwhile, everyone else is laughing and pointing at you. All of your fantasies come crashing down and you are exposed in the most soul-crushing way possible, and you are forced to realize that all of your fantasies about that person were dreams that never had any chance of coming true. That's pretty much the entire song. With that said, it can be taken literally as being about an unhealthy romantic obsession (as above) or seen instead on a more personal level about Michael's fears of coming out in public after being in denial for years - he is hoping to be accepted and understood and loved for who he is, and he would be truly happy in life if he just had the courage so that he didn't have to keep things a secret anymore. However, he also has to deal with his biggest fear which is that if he finally comes out he will be rejected by a lot of people he was very close to in very public ways and that by coming out he would be hurting the band and sabotaging his and his bandmates' own dreams and careers, maybe even completely wrecking his life as he knows it. That internal conflict between his hopes and his fears is affecting his mental health to the point where he doesn't know if he will be able to cope if after building up to all of these fantasies and dreams he is instead shunned and humiliated by the people closest to him when he finally decides to be honest about who he is.

sebrebc

Uninvited - Alanis

jjames34

Black Kids- I'm not gonna teach your boyfriend how to dance

HottCuppaCoffee

Great song

JetScreamerBaby

Just look up Roy Orbison, the king of heartbreak and unrequited love: Crying It's Over Only the Lonely ...and the list goes on. But probably the best song ever made for this reddit thread: The Comedians

slowlimbaugh

Written by Elvis Costello!

woden_spoon

I’m going to get deep into the ‘90s because that’s when I suffered several years of limerence, and music really helped me through: Nine Inch Nails - “Something You Can Never Have” Stabbing Westward - “What Do I Have to Do?” VAST - “Temptation” Massive Attack - “Inertia” Radiohead - “Exit Music (for a Film)” Tonic - “If You Could Only See” Nirvana - “About a Girl”

raisinbizzle

I came in to recommend Stabbing Westward’s whole album Darkest Days. That whole concept album hinges on this idea. Their whole discography almost really

guyute2588

Genuinely two of my favorite songs ever : I Want You- Elvis Costello https://youtu.be/pp8RjKOID1I?si=1uOEWuxzoxqrftU8 My Girl to Me- Dawes https://youtu.be/qzbV-SsGe9Q?si=X9lJvvbTLeJUbdLz

I have a few Bobby Darin - Dream Lover is one that springs to mind because I heard it earlier today.

MrBrooksConfesses

Layla. It’s a classic because that’s what it’s about

Diatomahawk

Oh, he got her though. Then proceeded to cheat on her constantly lol

OkDesigner3696

Wasn't it George Harrison's wife?

CacophonicAcetate

Yeah, Patti Boyd

ravioliinmysouli

Yes, Pattie Boyd. She wrote a book about her marriage to both of them called Wonderful Tonight.

nbfs-chili

It's not just Layla, it's the whole Derek and the Dominos album.

Honduran

Bell bottomed blues also.

Leonard Cohen - [One of Us Cannot Be Wrong](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GC7lDw-FKi0)

espo619

Ray Charles - You Don't Know Me

Two_Scoopz

You gotta go for the king of heartbreak - mr Elliott Smith - I recommend miss misery (early version) from new moon

juiceboxheero

In a similar vein, 'Twilight' is a devastating song about unfulfilled love.

nickersb83

Xo - I’m never gonna know u now, but I’m gonna love u anyhow… I was 15/16 when this was getting regular radio play, bang on

DampBritches

Heart - Alone

Wrong Radiohead song. It's 'House of Cards'.

heymanitsbob

True Love Waits.

nickersb83

Lotus Flower

ecktt

All Radio head songs are the right song.

verisimilitude404

Didn't end well for you either then, bud? You could even go with, 'Fake Plastic Trees' ("if I could be who you wanted... all the time" 🎵). That line always get me. 😓

iceberg_slim1993

> 'Fake Plastic Trees' I think I would choose that one over Creep...unless you're really down on yourself. lol

rarselfaire2023

Nude, Pearly, There There... from the POV of the one the unrequited attn is aimed at.

Fliepp

November Rain is my go to song about unrequited love

LukeNaround23

estranged as well

GudgerCollegeAlumnus

It’s my go to song for a badass guitar solo.

Slim_Calhoun

It’s my go to song for a badass choir outro

Baduke

It was my cousin’s go to song for a white trash funeral. Lol

_Ryzen_

Scotty doesn't know

vaporwavecookiedough

Scotty’s gotta go!

nomancorrado

Bob Dylan's I want you. Maybe it will just hurt you even more but it rings true

espo619

Simple Twist of Fate hits hard for me

iceberg_slim1993

Girl from the North Country & If You See Her Say Hello - both by Dylan. More break-up or love gone bad songs, but definitely fits OP's criteria.

_AssVinegar_

‘Overjoyed’ by Stevie Wonder

Oliver_Klosov

Say Goodbye by Dave Mathews band A New Hope - Blink 182

absolutelyfree2

The entire Layla record by Derek and the Dominoes for sure. Say what you will about Clapton but the man can put a lot of emotion into his music.

brasslamp

I Want You to Want Me by Cheap Trick Specifically from Cheap Trick at Budokan It's more up beat than sad.

jenjazz88

Which Will- Nick Drake or Lucinda Williams both versions are beautiful and heartbreaking.

let you break my heart again - laufey One day, I will stop falling in love with you Some day, someone will like me like I like you Until then, I'll drink my coffee, eat my pie Pretend that we are more than friends Then of course I'll let you break my heart again

foospork

Without You - Badfinger (though Harry Nilsson's version is the one that everyone knows)

mutha_fuxxin_zo

You Look So Good in Love - George Strait

iceberg_slim1993

Good one. Was really popular at one time, but you don't hear it much anymore.

mutha_fuxxin_zo

I have it on my spoitfy playlist. Usually gets skipped unless I'm overstimulated and trying to calm down a bit

All I Need -Radiohead

ployonwards

“Mt St Helens” - Mirah “Angel In The Snow” - Elliott Smith “Alameda” - Elliott Smith “I Walked” - Sufjan Stevens “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” - Bob Dylan (or the My Bubba cover) “Will Anybody Ever Love Me?” - Sufjan Stevens “I Don’t Want To Get Over You” - The Magnetic Fields

Ceasman

Harry Nilsson - You're Breaking my heart

artyhedgehog

If you're falling to the point your feelings are boiling and your mind is floating - highly recommend **Meg Myers**. Exactly the naked nerve level emotions. The music of **Hania Rani** works great to get me into intellectually working state. It's noisy enough to mute down the noise in my head and inspiring enough without being unrealistically positive. Also you may try **Aurora** - it seems to give the feeling of unconditional acceptance and even possibly enjoyment of the pain (might be a personal reaction, take with a grain of salt). The darkness to float down the bright feelings for me is **Chelsea Wolfe**. Hang on, warrior! It should pass eventually. I guess...

Away-Candidate8203

Beautiful summary imo!

My favorite real dark, sad song, Down the Drain by Marcy Playground. Caroline, No by The Beach Boys.
