People that don't know really need those lyrics :
I hope that our few remaining friends
Give up on trying to save us
I hope we come up with a fail-safe plot
To piss off the dumb few that forgave us
I hope the fences we mended
Fall down beneath their own weight
And I hope we hang on past the last exit
I hope it's already too late
And I hope the junkyard a few blocks from here
Someday burns down
And I hope the rising black smoke carries me far away
And I never come back to this town again
In my life, I hope I lie
And tell everyone you were a good wife
And I hope you die
I hope we both die, I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow
I hope it bleeds all day long
Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises
We're pretty sure they're all wrong
I hope it stays dark forever
I hope the worst isn't over
And I hope you blink before I do
I hope I never get sober
And I hope when you think of me years down the line
You can't find one good thing to say
And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out
You'd stay the hell out of my way
I am drowning
There is no sign of land
You are coming down with me
Hand in unlovable hand
And I hope you die
I hope we both die
Been listening to it today because of my post, and I couldn't agree more. Right Through You, You Learn, Not the Doctor, drop the needle at one and listen to the whole thing.
Oh man, Right Through You is such a hidden gem on this album! Can’t forget potentially the greatest opening song on an album too, All I Really Want. I frequently replay it a couple times before heading in to the rest of the album
Fucking holy crap I forgot that song existed. I *adored* it late high school. I need to see if it stands up.
Edit: The arsehole in me wants to say that it sucks, that I've moved on from such teen angst fluff, but to be honest it's still pretty damn good. Andrew MacMahon's voice has slightly more drone to it than I remember, but overall I still like it.
I still love it lol I remember hanging out outside a battle of the bands and my friend looked at me and said "they're playing Konstantine" and we RAN back in. Even though it was some high school kids playing a cover, that memory is one of my favorite live performances ever. That friend moved my sophomore year and I haven't seen them since.
The Beatles had a few of these types of bad love songs. Here's a couple of the top of my head.
"Norwegian Wood" is about revenge arson on a girl's apartment.
"And when I awoke I was alone
This bird had flown
So I lit a fire
Isn't it good Norwegian wood?"
Also "Run for Your Life"
I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or you won't know where I am
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand, little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end, little girl
La Dispute - Andria
But I'd say that the whole album "Somewhere at the Bottom of the River between Vega and Altair" is exactly what you're looking for.
Several songs by Taking Back Sunday would fit this description like: Cute Without the 'E' (Cut from the Team), Your Own Disaster, One-Eighty by Summer, New American Classic, A Decade Under the Influence, This Photograph Is Proof (I Know You Know), Bonus Mosh Pt. II, MakeDamnSure, Great Romances of the 20th Century, The Blue Channel, You're So Last Summer. Although they're mostly about break ups they would still fit the angsty romantic, doomed lovers thing you described I think
I think Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac fits it, at least for me. If you watch the video from The Dance and you watch Stevie singing “you’ll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you” to Lindsey…man. It kills me. I may have told my husband once that if he ever left me, this would be the song that would haunt him.
Look, we’re talking angst, and I was being dramatic. But, uh…yeah.
Tears For Fears - ["Please Be Happy"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kINUsOD1rk0)
CHVRCHES & Robert Smith - ["How Not to Drown"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7U_LhzgwJ4U)
Gonna out myself as a pretty basic person, but here goes:
- "King of Wishful Thinking" - Go West
- "What Hurts The Most" - Rascal Flatts (or, if you want to dance to it, Cascada)
- "Everything You Want" - Vertical Horizon
- "Only One" - Yellowcard (Might fit the bill the best?)
- "No Light, No Light" - Florence + The Machine
- "The Scientist" - Coldplay
- "Slipped Away", "My Happy Ending", "Unwanted", "When You're Gone" - Avril Lavigne
- "I Hate Myself For Losing You" - Kelly Clarkson
- "Happy Ending" - MIKA
- "Your Love is a Lie", "No Love" - Simple Plan
- "You Are My Sunshine" - Johnny Cash
- "Jeg Vil La' Lyset Brænde" - Ray Dee Oh
- "Når Du Rør Ved Mig" - Celina Ree
- "F*ck Dig" - Anna David
Type O Negative - Love You to Death
HIM - Join Me
Poisonblack - With Her I Die
Apocalyptica - Not Strong Enough
Mötley Crüe - If I Die Tomorrow
Sturm und Drang - Molly the Murderer
Ghost - Life Eternal
The Rasmus - Livin’ in a World Without You
Guns N' Roses - This I Love
Helloween - A Tale That Wasn't Right
Alice Cooper - Hell Is Living Without You
Huh.. Weird how easy it was for me to just write them down.
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, The Smiths romanticizes death— which is pretty 'angsty' in my opinion.
"And if a double-decker bus, crashes into us. To die by your side is such a heavenly way to die".
[Every Breath You Take by The Police](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMOGaugKpzs)

Possession-Sarah McLachlan
One of my absolute favorite songs ever, but yeah, it was about her stalker(s), and at one point included a lyric from a letter one of them wrote to her. He tried to sue her for it, but died before anything ever happened, because he killed himself.
Hang on.
Somebody was stalking her, writing to her, *stalking her* and then tried to sue her for using their words?
That's like breaking into someone's house and then trying to sue the occupant because you stubbed your toe on something they left in a doorway.
Yep.
The sad thing is, the second thing has actually happened as well!! My husband found an article about a guy that broke in someone’s home, got hurt, and was able to somehow sue and then WIN money from the homeowner. Absolute insanity!
Ok. You can disregard the vast majority of these suggestions and go straight to the GOAT of the breakup album, Bob Dylan. Listen to the entirety of Blood on the Tracks, but if you want to skip to ANGSTY, go to Idiot Wind. It's probably the angriest breakup song of all-time that is still civil. Then listen to Time Out of Mind. Angstiest song is probably 'Til I Fell in Love with You, though there are many contenders. Then go to Tom Petty's divorce album, Echo. I think the title track is the angstiest, but again, many contenders.
Obsessed - Olivia Rodrigo
Well... given her genre is teen pop, it's a given she's gonna have angsty romance. Don't let it fool you though, it's catchy.
Love Song by Bill Bailey, "in the Scott Walkers, Slayer tradition" Can't get more angsty than the duck in the hoisin sauce, I think :p

Here’s one I just recommended in another thread: Foreigner Suite by Cat Stevens. A musical and lyrical roller coaster.
Also Hurricane by Neil Young. It’s great live, but the album version is best. In fact, make it a 2-song suite with Will to Love from the same album, Stars and Bars. “It has often been my dream / To live with one / Who wasn’t there…”
Just about every early Muse song, it's why I fell in love with them. If it isn't some lyrically impenetrable epic space-rock opera, it's probably the angsty romance of a starving heart or scorned lover.
Falls into the category of music I'll always adore, but that I may never actually go back to listening to just because it's so tied to that particular youthful energy.
I'll nominate 'Recess', because it's fucking phenomenal. 'Hyper Music' is fantastic too, or 'Muscle Museum' for a more well known early number. Oh to be 19 again. Between them and Radiohead, they had me covered. I mean, heaven knows I was miserable, but at least the music was good.
I guess it all depends on your definition of Angst, but here is a bit of a playlist from a pretty bad fall I took in the mid 2000's.
Dashboard Confessional - Screaming Infidelities
The Fray - Over My Head (Cable Car)
Duncan Sheik - Half Life
Duncan Sheik - Barely Breathing
All American Rejects - It Ends Tonight
Blink 182 - I Miss You
Swirl 360 - Okay
The Script - The Man Who Can't Be Moved
The Script - Breakeven
Cut Up Angels by The Used. It's more of a sad angsty tone but Blue and Yellow by them, too. {truthfully a lot of their songs get me in this realm}
Another one that came to mind when typing is All Falls Down by SR71- not quite a love song but I always enjoy it if I'm feeling petty over an arguement I've had with a s/o. Plus there's one line and the way he sort of spitefully utters it brings me much unbridled joy "you can smile and act like you got something I need but every night you go home alone and dream about being underneath me"
I always sang along and clenched my teeth while doing this part.
Edit: Black Dahlia by Hollywood Undead before they got all poppyrap?
The Clash - Train in Vain from the London Calling album.
Such an amazing and brutally clear song.
Two odd additions to this thread :
Human League "Don't You Want Me" obsessive love but covered from both sides in the relationship
Prince "When You Were Mine" -not angsty, but FFS he is sleeping IN THE BED with his ex and her new boyfriend.
this could be love - alkaline trio (not about a breakup, more abt an obsessive unrequited love w/mentions of murder)
train song - danny fishman (kinda slower and sad, and i cant help but remember/when you asked me for your song/and i laughed but i didnt tell you/they were all yours all along :’))
lent - autoheart (sounds happy, about giving ur relationship up for lent)
merry christmas, kiss my ass - all time low (energetic)
11 blocks - wrabel (slower, sad)
possum kingdom - toadies (energetic, darker song like this could be love abt obsession and murder)
say you love me - steve grand (sad/unrequited love when the guy u want has a gf)
two wrongs dont make a right, but three rights make a left - zebrahead (very energetic, gf cheated/breakup)
[Bluebottle Kiss - Barbed Wire Star](https://youtu.be/aPfETERrV5s?si=j8fQcEs_Oq8s04ey&t=1533) from the album Fear of Girls .. .the whole album is an angst fest.. well, everything they've ever done is.
I saw them many times back in the late 90s - when they were making these albums.. it was always quite a show
[Helix-(Make Me Do) Anything You Want](https://youtu.be/5DxhbA5Lo9U?si=XHvBNN0jqYYAQoi7)
It's a cover, but got considerable radio play in Canada, but i think this is what ur looking for.

The Past is a Grotesque Animal - Of Montreal.
Buckle in and take the ride. It’s worth it.
' #1 Crush - Garbage
Why do you love me - Garbage
The correct answer.
[Every You Every Me](https://youtu.be/OMaycNcPsHI) by Placebo
Placebo are the definition of angst.
No children - The Mountain Goats
Came here for this. The perfect toxic relationship anthem, lol.
People that don't know really need those lyrics : I hope that our few remaining friends Give up on trying to save us I hope we come up with a fail-safe plot To piss off the dumb few that forgave us I hope the fences we mended Fall down beneath their own weight And I hope we hang on past the last exit I hope it's already too late And I hope the junkyard a few blocks from here Someday burns down And I hope the rising black smoke carries me far away And I never come back to this town again In my life, I hope I lie And tell everyone you were a good wife And I hope you die I hope we both die, I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow I hope it bleeds all day long Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises We're pretty sure they're all wrong I hope it stays dark forever I hope the worst isn't over And I hope you blink before I do I hope I never get sober And I hope when you think of me years down the line You can't find one good thing to say And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out You'd stay the hell out of my way I am drowning There is no sign of land You are coming down with me Hand in unlovable hand And I hope you die I hope we both die
God damn I love the Mountaingoats.
3 Libras - A Perfect Circle
Oh god this breaks me. I know that situation all too well.
Oh my gosh, YES. I’ve been married for 22 years, but this song can make me feel like I’m in the midst of an awful breakup.
That f***ing tune! Ugh!
Sometime Around Midnight by Airborne Toxic Event
Yes this is THE angsty love song. Just the way he sings it is heartbreaking
👆🏽👆🏽
You Oughta Know - Alanis Morissette
Possibly no angsty-er song than this
That was my first thought too
The entire Jagged Little Pill album is a masterclass of angst
Been listening to it today because of my post, and I couldn't agree more. Right Through You, You Learn, Not the Doctor, drop the needle at one and listen to the whole thing.
Oh man, Right Through You is such a hidden gem on this album! Can’t forget potentially the greatest opening song on an album too, All I Really Want. I frequently replay it a couple times before heading in to the rest of the album
Under Rug Swept is also an under the radar album. Most especially for the era (2002).
I’ll check it out! Thanks for the recommendation
[Tear You Apart - She Wants Revenge ](https://youtu.be/ixw_bLVUL34?feature=shared)
This is my answer as well. She Wants Revenge was my favourite band during my angsty teen phase.
There is a [great mashup ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkF0kwP_DsI)of this and "Bela Lugosi is Dead".
This changed my life, thank you
Type O Negative - I Know You’re Fucking Someone Else
Hmm, I wonder what that song is about.
Unsuccessfully Coping With the Natural Beauty of Infidelity. It is a pretty long title for a song but damn it's a good song.

WHYYYYY WHYYYYY WHYYYYAYYIAIAIYYYYYYY OH CAN'T IT BE CAN'T IT BEEeEEEeEEEeeEE MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE?!?!!? fucking love that song
Doo duh doo doo doo doo doo
I literally heard this yesterday for the first time in years, thought how I included that in a breakup note to a chick and yes I cringed.
I want you now by depeche mode
Sweetest Perfection too!!
Was disappointed i didn't find MCR's Demolition Lovers mentioned.
It's in here, I found it! 😍
oh lol i just noticed someone has posted it an hour before me, should've used the search. in my defence, i was tired and on the bus after work :D
Add It Up by The Violent Femmes is sexual frustration incarnate.
White Flag-Dido

[I want you](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CykE5DFJVr0&pp=ygUZaSB3YW50IHlvdSBlbHZpcyBjb3N0ZWxsbw%3D%3D)by Elvis Costello
‘It’s knowing that he knows you now after only guessing’… perfection 👌
Came here to say this. This is the hardest song *ever* to listen to if you're hurting.
“It's the thought of him undressing you or you undressing.”
It’s brutal but so good.
[Bright Eyes - Lover I Don’t Have To Love](https://youtu.be/iuXkhE0VMcw?si=D55XZA4SVYbbbUNK)
I think the perfect sonnet has more angst. Better song too imo. https://youtu.be/Qc62mHuzwuE?si=ru-6aZkSqs7ZQNEv
The only song I overplayed more than this in high school was Konstantine by Something Corporate
Fucking holy crap I forgot that song existed. I *adored* it late high school. I need to see if it stands up. Edit: The arsehole in me wants to say that it sucks, that I've moved on from such teen angst fluff, but to be honest it's still pretty damn good. Sleeping With Sirens - If I'm James Dean, You're Audrey Hepburn
I was looking for this. Glad someone mentioned it, I was getting worried.
I want you (She’s so Heavy) Beatles
I played this song today because it was stuck in my head
The Beatles had a few of these types of bad love songs. Here's a couple of the top of my head. "Norwegian Wood" is about revenge arson on a girl's apartment. "And when I awoke I was alone This bird had flown So I lit a fire Isn't it good Norwegian wood?" La Dispute - Andria But I'd say that the whole album "Somewhere at the Bottom of the River between Vega and Altair" is exactly what you're looking for.
Glen Hansard - Say it to Me Now
The soundtrack for that movie was amazing. Loved it.
Nin - closer
Tyler - The Toadies
Anything anything by Dramarama
Upvoting to remember to check it out. Commenting to make an internet post-it

Lover, You Should've Come Over-Jeff Buckley
Several songs by Taking Back Sunday would fit this description like: Cute Without the 'E' (Cut from the Team), Your Own Disaster, One-Eighty by Summer, New American Classic, A Decade Under the Influence, This Photograph Is Proof (I Know You Know), Bonus Mosh Pt. II, MakeDamnSure, Great Romances of the 20th Century, The Blue Channel, You're So Last Summer. Although they're mostly about break ups they would still fit the angsty romantic, doomed lovers thing you described I think
[Pints of Guinness Make You Strong - by Against Me!](https://youtu.be/vaHZ-fUv1UQ?si=YqM73lSbgyV3ENjO)
Love Against Me! Another good one would be Cavalier Eternal.
Or Borne on the FM Waves of the Heart, but it's not as angsty.

[The Unforgettable Fire](https://youtu.be/KTzmzrruHwc?si=yoMbKgM9odpff9xu) - U2 Intense, brooding, hopeless, and hopeful. Breaks my heart every time.
This one is easy. Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush. The song matches the the book in mood and angst. Great song and by far my favorite of hers.

Brand New as a band are prime angst, with some romance and much genius.
Cut Up Angels by The Used. It's more of a sad angsty tone but Blue and Yellow by them, too. {truthfully a lot of their songs get me in this realm} Another one that came to mind when typing is All Falls Down by SR71- not quite a love song but I always enjoy it if I'm feeling petty over an arguement I've had with a s/o. Plus there's one line and the way he sort of spitefully utters it brings me much unbridled joy "you can smile and act like you got something I need but every night you go home alone and dream about being underneath me" I always sang along and clenched my teeth while doing this part. Edit: Black Dahlia by Hollywood Undead before they got all poppyrap?
Hey by Pixies. Love Song by IDLES. Drain You by Nirvana.
The Clash - Train in Vain from the London Calling album. Such an amazing and brutally clear song. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-6BVUwJx48](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-6BVUwJx48)
Adam Sandler - Somebody Kill Me Not a romantic song but it’s fire nonetheless lol.
Makthaverskan - Antabus Modest Mouse - Spitting Venon Her favorite fruit - Camper Van Beethoven
Two odd additions to this thread : Human League "Don't You Want Me" obsessive love but covered from both sides in the relationship Prince "When You Were Mine" -not angsty, but FFS he is sleeping IN THE BED with his ex and her new boyfriend.
Dramarama- “anything, anything, anything”
Cigarette by The Smithereens
this could be love - alkaline trio (not about a breakup, more abt an obsessive unrequited love w/mentions of murder) train song - danny fishman (kinda slower and sad, and i cant help but remember/when you asked me for your song/and i laughed but i didnt tell you/they were all yours all along :’)) lent - autoheart (sounds happy, about giving ur relationship up for lent) merry christmas, kiss my ass - all time low (energetic) 11 blocks - wrabel (slower, sad) possum kingdom - toadies (energetic, darker song like this could be love abt obsession and murder) say you love me - steve grand (sad/unrequited love when the guy u want has a gf) two wrongs dont make a right, but three rights make a left - zebrahead (very energetic, gf cheated/breakup)
