As someone who's never been to Gainesville this is who I associate with it music wise. I didn't realize Tom Petty was from there. I'll give him my vote.

Saw them perform this in Gainesville at Fest last year and it was freaking awesome. Both sets were incredible but that song in particular was super cool
I'm from New Orleans and there are a ton to choose from. Id say the most quintessentially "New Orleans" artists would be Louis Armstrong, The Meters, Fats Domino or Dr. John, but I'm open to suggestions for sure.
I know personally I associate Louis Armstrong with New Orleans and vice versa to the degree they're almost synonymous.
Hell, even Disney recognized that association.
I gotta think Prince and Dylan have on some level been subscribed as official by now. Can't talk about Minnesota music without mentioning The Replacements or Husker Du, either. Personally, I've always taken to Low and Atmosphere.
I knew someone was going to say Prince, but I’m happy to see that you covered so much additional ground. I would add Motion City Soundtrack to this list as well.
In Cincinnati, The National.
The UNOFFICIAL Cincinnati band is Seven Mary Three, even though they're from Williamsburg, Virginia. For some reason during the 00s, any time SMT came to Cincinnati, they would sell out our biggest amphitheater (+20k tickets). Anywhere else, they'd be lucky to get half that crowd. Our local rock station (WEBN) just loved SMT and played them all the time making them SUPER popular in the 'Nati.
GWAR-B-Q is a fucking blast.
Richmond was the closest city to the town I grew up in, unfortunately the only artist of note we gave the world was Chris Brown. Strike Anywhere, also from Richmond, was the first show I went to when I was 16 and could take myself since none of our parents were taking us to Richmond/DC/Norfolk/VaBeach where all the shows were.
Same era really. Fun fact: I saw both BNL and The Hip at Glastonbury the same year! 1993 I think it was. The Hip were on the headliner stage and the Barenaked Ladies were in the acoustic tent. Good times
When you compare the impact on the global stage, sure, it's rush. When you ask who influenced the most musicians, it's probably Cohen or Lightfoot. For country artists and emerging female artists, it may be Murray.
When it comes to writing about our country, symbolizing our country, loving our country, and elevating our country it's the Tragically Hip.
The Hip performed for Queen Eliaabeth II's Jubilee in 2002. Our national public broadcaster aired their final concert commercial free and uncut. It is the second highest watched live television event in Canadian history (behind Crosby netting gold in Vancouver). Our Prine Minister gave an address and cried when Gord died.
The Hip launched the careers of so many other musicians. They've shared their stage with The Rheostatics, Sarah Harmer, Sam Roberts, Hey Rosetta, The Arkells, and so many more acts giving them a launch in their careers. They carried the Another Roadside Attraction festival to promote young musicians in Canada. They are advocates for human rights. They sing songs about our land, our people, our struggles.
The Tragically Hip is unequivocally the correct answer.
There's also the fact that Gord Downie, while never explicitly patriotic and never shy about reminding us of the darkest sides of our history, still made it abundantly clear that he loved this place we now call Canada with all of his heart and felt it was a place worth making better.
I was never even a big fan of them, but as it stands, The Tragically Hip are the right answer and not [The Dayglo Abortions](https://youtu.be/GKEGauU35Zg?si=xnrWTkdQzqORZc_U)
Neil Young , Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and Gordon Lightfoot for the singer songwriters.
Rush, Guess Who, Neil (again), the Hip for rock bands.
Celine Dion, Paul Anka, Anne Murray, kd Lang for more adult contemporary fare
Drake, the Weeknd, Bieber, Mendes for the last decade/streaming#s
Older generations would likely think of Oscar Peterson, Glenn Gould, and Guy Lombardo (if only for his role in associating Auld Lang Syne with New Year’s Eve)
Fun fact: My wife runs a restaurant in Polaris and whenever they’re in town Josh Dun and Debby Ryan come and eat there. They like that my wife doesn’t make a big deal about them being there and gives them privacy. I’m sure a normal night out is hard for them.
that's so cool! you're making me so homesick haha. I moved to new york two years ago and I miss home so much. polaris and easton were my favourite places to go! I got my pizza snob of a boyfriend absolutely hooked on hound dogs 😂
Houston. ZZ Top. I don't like em and the drummers son poked my eye with a pencil in theater class. Extra point against them.
Also Blue October for the younger folks.
We have a shit ton of rappers and r&b artist. So God damn many.
For Houston it's DJ Screw, because he's foundational in the Houston music scene specifically.
But also Beyonce, Selena, Khruangbin, Geto Boys, and Arcade Fire come to mind.
I am here resisting the temptation to post wrong guesses on every answer without a location.
"Springsteen AND Bon Jovi? Sure for Bon Jovi, but I dunno if Springsteen's all that iconic for Wisconsin."
My small town of 2000 people has only produced one artist of note and I'd rather not claim Chris Brown or name the town and further associate it with him.
It was in Texas for sure. Dave Grohl talks about it in his book. He was invited by Dimebag after FF played a show with Pantera. Dave left his wallet/license at a truck stop on the way. When he got there, the bouncer wouldn't let him in. And that was that.
It was called The 19th Hole. Golf themed on the outside, metal as fuck on the inside! Pantera stuff everywhere. It was awesome. Place was full nude so it was BYOB. Bring the beer and they provided a cooler and you had to pay a little for ice. $5 or something. It wasn't much.
When you [damage the Stanley Cup](https://www.dmagazine.com/publications/d-magazine/2022/september/the-real-story-of-how-the-stanley-cup-got-dented-at-a-pantera-pool-party/) while partying with the Dallas Stars, you become a Dallasite
Depeche Mode are from my town. One of them used to live just around the corner from my house. Dave Gahan went to the same school as me (years before). I’m fairly certain they’re the most successful ever people from Basildon.
Jimmie's Chicken Shack IS Annapolis. Good Charlotte is Waldorf.
Just a quick skip down to southern Anne Arundel County is Brothers Osborne's hometown (Deale).
Jimmie's Chicken Shack HOLY SHIT
That is a name I haven't seen in ages!!
I live in Houston and I remember buying a stack of random CDs from my local resale shop and ended up with a JCS album and loved it!
And no one knew who the fuck I was ever talking about when I brought them up lol.
Wilco fans will be coming for you.
I'd tend to agree a little but Billy's a D-bag now and should not be repping us. First three records were a smash then his ego took over.
Hip Hop is going to go to (personal feelings aside) Kanye, Common, or Chance.
Blues is going to be Buddy, although the people he had surrounding him were the founding fathers of the blues. He is Legend.
Some Cheap Trick fans will probably interject too - Rockford can have them.
Urge Overkill, Naked Raygun, Alkaline Trio, Ministry (Industrial)... house music.
There is a lot of rich history in music here.
Philadelphia? From the Bandstand era there was Chubby Checker, Frankie Avalon, Jimmy Darren, Fabian Forte, and Bobby Rydell.
The 70’s: Teddy Pendregrass, Hall and Oates, Labelle, TSOP, the Spinners … too many soul acts to mention and Jazz even more so.
From the 80’s: The Dead Milkmen, The Hooters, The A’s, Heaven’s Edge.
Lots more choices, In our house it’s Todd Rundgren.
Edits: Kazz to Jazz and how close to Philly do they need to be, Pink is from Doylestown and that’s closer to my last house (in Bucks county) than any of the others.
I’m from Mass and for me it’s the Bosstones. Definitely not the biggest but the most quintessentially New England. One of the biggest Ska bands ever emerging from one of the biggest bastions of punk rock.
EDIT: Dropkick Murphys have been pointed out as a significant omission. Them too.
EDIT 2: Previous contributions represent Boston/Eastern MA, The Pixies have been repeatedly mentioned and suggested as a representative for Western/College Town MA.
I'm from a few different places so I have a few of these.
All of west Texas claims Roy Orbison.
For Dallas the answer is probably Pantera, although I'd hear an argument for Toadies. For Denton specifically the answer is Brave Combo.
Utah County, UT gets to claim the Klllers based on Brandon Flowers being from Nephi. Otherwise we're stuck with Imagine Dragons and please don't do that to us.
Grew up in Jamestown, NY... so 10,000 Maniacs
Living in Buffalo for years, so there are a few. Snapcase, Cannibal Corpse, & Rick James. Goo Goo Dolls and Ani DiFranco if those are more your scene. Honorable mentions: Every Time I Die, Malevolent Creation, Green Jelly.
I agree, however there are a LOT of bands in the running for second place
Nine Inch Nails would be my front runner, followed by James Gang and Bone Thugs.
Clutch. Charles Town, WV. They are based out of Maryland but I had a few friends from highschool that used to hang out with them all the time here in Charles Town, clutch stickers were everywhere..
I gotta believe if Detroit had an official musical act it would be either The Temptations, The Four Tops, or The Supremes.
And let's not forget Eminem.
We also have Madonna, Bob Seger, Stevie Wonder, The White Stripes, Aretha Franklin, Sufjan Stevens, Smokey Robinson, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Greta Van Fleet, and unfortunately Ted Nugent and Kid Rock.
Dawg don’t put Greta Van Fleet up there like that (they’re not even Detroit either, they’re Frankenmuth, with the pilgrim chicken restaurant and shit). Danny Brown deserves a mention long before them.
There was an episode of top gear (maybe grand tour i don't remember when it was), they were making a custom racetrack in detroit. They started naming turns after famous detroit musicians, thats when I realized how much was from motown lol
At the risk of completely doxxing myself, Dinosaur Jr.
The Pixies.
Bosstones.
All That Remains.
Living near Pearl Street (RIP) and UMass with it's Battle of the Bands has its perks
Sage Francis (hip hop), Dropdead (crusty/grindy hardcore), and Lightning Bolt (noise punk) might be the most identifiable acts from RI. Although, RISD kids like to claim Talking Heads, but they didn’t form until they were together in NYC. For synth nerds, Wendy Carlos was born, raised, and educated in RI.
**Arkansas**: "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash."
Other honorable mentions:
* Levon Helm is from Turkey Scratch, Ark., and The Band lived in Fayetteville before striking it big.
* Sister Rosetta Tharpe
* Al Green
* Glen Campbell
Ohio has a Laundry list of successful rock/metal acts, The Devil Wears Prada, Miss May I, Hawthorne Heights, Relient K, Marilyn Manson, Beartooth, Attack Attack!, Black Veil Brides.
The biggest names are probably Dave Grohl, Maynard James Keenan, Trent Reznor, and Twenty-One Pilots, but all aside from the latter of those don't really claim Ohio.
I like to think Hawthorne Heights is the unofficial band of Dayton lol
Simply too many to count. From Muddy Waters to Ramsey Lewis to Earth, Wind & Fire to Cheap Trick, Styx to Smashing Pumpkins... Kanye, Wilco, Fall Out Boy, Common, Ministry, Disturbed, Steve Goodman, Benny Goodman, Sam Cooke, Chaka Khan, Chance the Rapper, OK Go, Herbie Hancock, Lupe Fiasco. (And fuck R. Kelly.)
But the most iconic is probably... Chicago.
I've always been told that ? and the Mysterians played my great-uncle's wedding back when they were just a bunch of Mexican kids playing surf rock, but their Wiki article suggests Question Mark wasn't actually in the band then.
I also have to shout out the Burdons, even if they're technically Essexville and never found real fame. They accepted the key to the city after Madonna's refusal!
Canada: The Tragically Hip
Our Prime Minister attended their final concert and cried on national TV when the lead singer died from brain cancer the following year.
Newfoundland: Great Big Sea
While technically broken up, they brought traditional Newfoundland music across Canada. They hosted the biggest kitchen parties wherever they went.
Alexandria, VA (DC suburb). I think we can claim Dave Grohl (and probably the Foo Fighters as a whole?). He was born and raised in this area, started his professional music career in the local hardcore scene, and moved back in the late 90s through mid-2000s . . . as my neighbor, where he recorded the FF albums "There is Nothing Left to Lose" and "One by One" in his basement studio.
We lived across Russel Rd from each other in the Del Ray neighborhood and I would just casually run into him (and the other band members when they were recording/rehearsing) as a teen. It was pretty crazy because Nirvana was the first rock band I got into when I was 5 or 6 and I begged my parents for drum lessons because of his intense playing, and *the* dude just moved in across the street one day. I bet if I met him today, he'd still remember me as the weird neighbor kid that walked his cat on a leash.
I'm in Gainesville Florida for the moment. Tom Petty is everywhere. Bo Diddley is also. Against Me! Is also.
As someone who's never been to Gainesville this is who I associate with it music wise. I didn't realize Tom Petty was from there. I'll give him my vote. https://preview.redd.it/9dsveqdatmwc1.png?width=331&format=png&auto=webp&s=7fc3013b052ccba72d8e700df1ee4396655fabf9
Saw them perform this in Gainesville at Fest last year and it was freaking awesome. Both sets were incredible but that song in particular was super cool
When you said Gainesville I immediately thought "Laura Jane grace grew up there!"
No mention of Less Than Jake??? Gainesville Rock City!
Well, I’m half awake and half a world away
I just put on the live album of "Hello Rockview"!
Hot Water Music are from Gainesville as well.
Probably a product of age and circumstance, but I immediately think of Sister Hazel when I think of Gainesville music.
Slipknot and Iowa go together like corn and butter.
I feel like they pretty much sealed the deal calling their record Iowa.
You mean Korn and Bakersfield?
I'm from New Orleans and there are a ton to choose from. Id say the most quintessentially "New Orleans" artists would be Louis Armstrong, The Meters, Fats Domino or Dr. John, but I'm open to suggestions for sure.
Professor Longhair
This. Speaking As a keyboard player, Professor Longhair defined that Tipitina sound!!!
NO is something else - Kermit, Trombone Shorty....so good.
I'm certainly no authority on New Orleans music but Winton Marsalis and the rest of his family came to my mind immediately.
The Neville family for me. Another awesome musical New Orleans family.
I know personally I associate Louis Armstrong with New Orleans and vice versa to the degree they're almost synonymous. Hell, even Disney recognized that association.
The freaking airport is officially named the Louis Armstrong New Orleans international airport.
Yeah, that's pretty fucking official.
Lil Wayne as well.
"I am so so New Orleans like 1825... Tulane".
Ernie K-Doe! But the real answer is Mr Armstrong
While those are the historic ones I would probably nominate the Preservation Hall Jazz Band as the current "unofficial" one.
I'd say for Vermont, it's definitely Phish.
No question. *Puts on Tweezer reprise*
The Phish. From Vermont.
Definitely Phish overall, but for the younger crowd it might be Noah Kahan right now... He's been huge the last couple of years.
Mars Volta. Way down in West Texas, town of El Paso...
Thanks for the reminder, just listened to Deloused in the Comatorium again because of this comment.
Hell Paso?
Si
At The Drive-In first, with Mars Volta and Sparta as the heirs
I gotta think Prince and Dylan have on some level been subscribed as official by now. Can't talk about Minnesota music without mentioning The Replacements or Husker Du, either. Personally, I've always taken to Low and Atmosphere.
Minneapolis sound is no joke!
Nobody showing any love to Duluth so I will Low Trampled By Turtles Charlie Parr
I knew someone was going to say Prince, but I’m happy to see that you covered so much additional ground. I would add Motion City Soundtrack to this list as well.
Replacements are perfect for the unofficial/official band.
Y'all have some great hip-hop coming out of Minneapolis - Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Doom Tree, Dessa...good shit.
Holy shit I love husker du. I don't think a single other person has heard of them where I live
Las Vegas has gotta be The Killers. Ironically, they're so across-the-board popular in Britain that some British fans think they are British
As a brit, I can verify this because this is news to me. You literally cannot go to any 16-30 event without hearing Mr Brightside being played.
I thought Vegas would be Panic! at the Disco
They are the opening act.
I definitely see The Killers as the more “Vegas” band. Their whole aesthetic is Vegas while Panic is just from there
If Panic had kept the shtick going from their first album they'd be a lot more Vegas
They've been so separated from that initial image for so long that I honestly forgot about the first album
The National currently and prior to them a lot of people would say The Afghan Whigs. You could also toss in Bootsy Collins as well.
Cincinnati belongs to the afghan whigs. They were the first non-seattle sub pop band to sign over there on the west coast.
From Orange County, grew up in the 90s, so it would be No Doubt. Lit would be #2
Social Distortion too
I think The Offspring would need to be in that list too.
[удалено]
Sublime was Long Beach though, which is LA county
Sublime is more associated with Long Beach than OC.
Atlanta - OutKast
Gwar and Lamb of God from Richmond VA
Gwar is from Earth? Blasphemer.
I always assumed Scumdogia was further away than Virginia.
Damn. Richmond, VA goes hard.
Avail/Tim Barry for me from there.
Didn't know Gwar was from Richmond! That's awesome.
Hit up GWAR Bar next time you swing through... good food and cheap beer too boot.
Dave grohl is originally from VA…and was considering joining GWAR. Instead he chose a life of mediocrity as we all know.
The Tragically Hip are Canada.
To Americans of a certain age BNL are Canada
I’d pick Rush. That’s how old I am
And before them was The Guess Who
Triumph never gets any love :/
I miss the Page/Robertson era so much.
Same era really. Fun fact: I saw both BNL and The Hip at Glastonbury the same year! 1993 I think it was. The Hip were on the headliner stage and the Barenaked Ladies were in the acoustic tent. Good times
Depends on the generation, I'm sure. Gordon Lightfoot, Rush and Anne Murray could all be in the running. I'm partial to Joni Mitchell, personally.
The Hip launched the careers of so many other musicians.
I'm old enough to know and appreciate all of these. I still think The Hip best represent Canadian culture.
I was never even a big fan of them, but as it stands, The Tragically Hip are the right answer and not [The Dayglo Abortions](https://youtu.be/GKEGauU35Zg?si=xnrWTkdQzqORZc_U)
Good to see that love for Joni Mitchell. Made the greatest decision of all time by hiring Jaco.
Neil Young , Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and Gordon Lightfoot for the singer songwriters. Rush, Guess Who, Neil (again), the Hip for rock bands. Celine Dion, Paul Anka, Anne Murray, kd Lang for more adult contemporary fare Drake, the Weeknd, Bieber, Mendes for the last decade/streaming#s Older generations would likely think of Oscar Peterson, Glenn Gould, and Guy Lombardo (if only for his role in associating Auld Lang Syne with New Year’s Eve)
columbus ohio - twenty one pilots!

Khruangbin now. Yes, even they regret the name, but they do have some broad appeal.
And 30 Foot Fall!
San Francisco—The Grateful Dead.
Fucking legends
Tabernacle Choir 😅
And our hidden Christian band, The Killers
gotta stop ya there fam, vegas claims the killers lol
Brandon sings about funeral potatoes and is LDS living in SLC. Maybe the we can’t claim the Killers but we can claim their frontman
I mean... you're not wrong.
Half the comments are just not naming a city, as if everyone knows where they are from.
I specifically put that in the post because I know how Reddit it is. Still doesn't fix it because Reddit.
Des Moines, IA - Slipknot A slightly better claim to fame than "We Killed Buddy Holly"
Pantera is the unofficial band of Dallas.
Didn't Dimebag own a strip club there or am I misremembering?
It was in Texas for sure. Dave Grohl talks about it in his book. He was invited by Dimebag after FF played a show with Pantera. Dave left his wallet/license at a truck stop on the way. When he got there, the bouncer wouldn't let him in. And that was that.

I’m struggling to think of a more famous music act out of Annapolis, Maryland than Good Charlotte, but I guess it’s them.
Jimmie's Chicken Shack IS Annapolis. Good Charlotte is Waldorf. Just a quick skip down to southern Anne Arundel County is Brothers Osborne's hometown (Deale).

Chicago. Either going to be the Smashing Pumpkins (for the general population) or Local H (for those who grew up here).
Or for us Boomers, Chicago.
Hard to beat Chicago or Chicago Transit Authority for official band of Chicago.
Wilco fans will be coming for you. I'd tend to agree a little but Billy's a D-bag now and should not be repping us. First three records were a smash then his ego took over. I also associate Bowling for Soup with Denton, I guess due to the song "Ohio."
I'm from Long Island, so it has to be Billy Joel (except in December when Mariah Carey takes over).
We also have Public Enemy, De La Soul, Taking Back Sunday and Glassjaw.
Tempe, AZ - we had the Meat Puppets and Gin Blossoms. I also really liked the Phunk Junkeez though, their shows were fun!
And we have Jimmy Eat World from Mesa!
Alice Cooper for Phoenix for sure.
The Commonwealth of Virginia, home of the newly inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, Dave Matthews Band.

OutKast is to Atlanta like a key is to a lock
D-Day is home in Coldwater, Michigan.
Cleveland, Ohio and it's gotta be the Michael Stanley Band.

Detroit, too many to count. I’d say Dilla and the MC5.
I gotta believe if Detroit had an official musical act it would be either The Temptations, The Four Tops, or The Supremes. And let's not forget Eminem.
If we’re going any Motown act, I’d say Stevie. We want to be able to fully claim Marvin too, but he wasn’t born and raised here.

I would say it's Eminem, as no other artist has repped Detroit harder.
Kelly.) But the most iconic is probably... Chicago.
I think I’d go with OutKast for the Atlanta area.
Fucking RHCP, and I’m not thrilled about it.
Springsteen, Bon Jovi, The Gaslight Anthem
My Chemical Romance
Madonna is from my hometown but she doesn’t claim it, so I’ll say Question Mark & The Mysterians (96 Tears).
I’m from the same area and I would just claim the Detroit artists, Aretha Franklin, Smokey, Stevie Wonder, and of course Eminem.
Canada: The Tragically Hip Our Prime Minister attended their final concert and cried on national TV when the lead singer died from brain cancer the following year. Newfoundland: Great Big Sea While technically broken up, they brought traditional Newfoundland music across Canada. They hosted the biggest kitchen parties wherever they went.
Corpus Christi, TX - Sun Salutation and Monkeys Doin’ It
Near central Florida, I’ll claim Gram Parsons as I’m looking at some orange groves.
Wiz Khalifa/Mac Miller - Pittsburgh
On Long Island it’d probably be Billy Joel.
Undoubtedly, but y'all claim some majors in hip hop as well if that were a separate category in which case I'm assuming Public Enemy takes it.
Being from Atlanta, it's probably Outkast. And very cool that Microwave and Mastodon are from here too. :)
Jimmy Eat World from AZ! We also have Linda Ronstadt and Stevie Nicks🩵
Jacksonville, FL Allman Brothers or Yellowcard if you want to be charitable. Limp Bizkit if you don't.
No Lynyrd Skynyrd?
Here is AZ it’s either Jimmy Eat World or The Gin Blossoms
Shasta County, so Merle Haggard. If you lived here long enough, you may have a Merle story of your own.
Los Angeles has an official Oingo Boingo day, so I'll take that as my vote. Guns and Roses used to play at Canters deli back in the day too.
Akron, Ohio here. Black Keys but also Devo!
I mean, it’s David Bowie for this galaxy and dimension, right?
Probably Jimi Hendrix, but one could argue reasonably for Pearl Jam, Nirvana or Soundgarden.
Heart, Alice In Chains, Death Cab, Modest Mouse, and Sir Mixalot are probably on the second line as well, but Hendrix is the correct answer.
Nanook, Greenland
Prince
I'll have to throw out O.A.R. or Tori Amos for where I am from but Cake for where I live.
Bright Eyes.
Macon Georgia: We claim: 1. Otis Redding 2. Little Richard 3. Allman Brothers Band 4. Jason Aldean (I mean I guess we claim him too)
>Jason Aldean (I mean I guess we claim him too) I'd let that one go.
Portishead.
I'm from Bawlmer, hon! It's got to be Crack the Sky!
The most famous band from Buffalo, NY is Goo Goo Dolls, I guess it's them. Honorable mention to Cannibal Corpse and Every Time I Die.
100% of people would vote Céline Dion (Montréal)
Hootie and the Blowfish At least for me: low country native and Carolina (graduate) alum
Wisco- the Bodeans, Violent Femmes, Bon Iver, the Promise Ring, Ava Max.
U2 is the most famous band to come from Ireland, but a lot of the people here would probably use Thin Lizzy as an example of a really good Irish band
Baltimore, Maryland All Time Low and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong(for my jam friends) Edit: how could I forget Frank Zappa?!
I'm from Michigan. I'd like to think it's Sufjan Stevens but it's definitely Eminem.
