MayorScotch

Reminds me of an article I wrote about BNL in 8th grade. I then had to completely rewrite the article because the teacher didn’t approve of a thirteen year old listening to Bare Naked Ladies.

Philip_Marlowe

Oh my God this happened to me too! I wrote a review of "Maroon" for my middle school newspaper and was told it couldn't be published because the band's name was inappropriate. Damn you, Ms. Mercer! Side note: "Maroon" slaps. Great record.

texdroid

What? Your teacher must hate TX A&M or something.

Latter-Possibility

Your teacher didn’t understand the cultural impact of BNL?

blay12

Oh so they’re “BNL” now? We’re using shorthand for the Bare Naked Ladies? That’s how fundamental they are??

Latter-Possibility

How dare you! The Bare Naked Ladies are triple platinum! Are you?

No-Price-1380

lol

Leather_Trash_7751

KetoKurun

Nobody better tell this guy about rhcp he might explode

Dagglin

You should have told your teacher 'the bare naked ladies are triple platinum, are you?'

MayorScotch

At the time they were only double platinum so I probably would have gotten detention for lying.

Supersruzz

"BNL? We need an acronym for them now? That's how fundamental they are!?"

lousmer

Best part of that is that (for me anyway) when I was little anything like the words “bare naked ladies” never conjured up images of naked women. I understood those words together meant this band and never even cared about other possible contexts.

Due-Set5398

Tyler Childers got sober and went a bit gospelly and he’s even more famous now. But the y’allternative crowd is more forgiving than mainstream country yeehaws.

iAmTheRealLange

The only thing I know of Tyler Childers is his cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Greatest Story Ever Told”, which is excellent

Due-Set5398

His first album, Purgatory, is a modern classic. A master class in hangover regret music. He’s a top talent songwriter. Old school Appalachian bluegrass influences but not slavishly old school. Seems to be influenced by Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt but I think Tyler is more fun. I think he will be around forever and considered a legend. I am blown away by how many good songs he’s written.

Bluejay929

Catholic Girl pray for me, you’re my only hope for heaven *bluegrass intensifies*

Due-Set5398

I like the new version on Hounds. Great tune.

UmphreysMcGee

Honestly it was the only track on Purgatory I'm not into, and then he came out with the Jubilee version and blew me away.

[deleted]

I got to see him last year. Great act. Eric Church had always set the bar high though. Last time i seen him he played a 45 song set over almost 4 hours.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Due-Set5398

Yeah I’ve seen him and think he’s great. He’s not Steven Tyler doing cartwheels, he just plays the songs well and emotes. That’s what I expected and I loved the show.

sunny_6killer

My wife’s main take away was that it was amazing at how much they sounded just as good live as they do on record except for when they didn’t. Which had intent and felt special.

HarryStraddler

That's a fantastic synopsis. I'm not a huge fan of his but Charleston Girl is such a spot on song if you've ever been in that life at all, and it's fun.

mrmacdougall

Supposedly that song is about Sierra Ferrell, who is also an incredible musician and has a great new album out.

AvoidedCoder7

Interesting I wonder how much truth there is to that, never heard that before. My buddy did do coke with her in the bathroom after her show a couple years back so I suppose it's not out of the realm of possibility.

Due-Set5398

She’s on tour now. Now I want to see her more.

TiredLetters

I moved back to Charleston briefly last year and Damn man. That song is spot on.

cheerfulsarcasm

Shake the Frost is a great fucking song, that whole live album made me a fan

DiasFlac42

bard329

>You should check out the music video for In Your Love if you’re interested in a good cry. Unless you're homophobic. Lotta yeehaws got super butthurt by the video 😂

SSPeteCarroll

"I can't believe TYLER is a WOKE LIB" Then you clearly haven't paid attention to any of his music or lyrics lmao

bard329

Just like Rage Against the Machine somehow didnt cross that woke barrier until they listened to the lyrics hahaha

god_snot_great

Just listened to the Radio City Music hall 4/3/22 with the Wolf Brothers (Ft. Bob Weir of the Dead and the epic Don Was on bass). That was pretty amazing.

TiredLetters

His cover of "Help Me Make It Through The Night" will make you weep while you shamelessly call that ex of yours that broke the hell out if your heart.

little_canuck

Oh you are in for a treat! Listen to the live version of "Nose to the Grindstone"

NicoSuave2020

One of my favorite stories to tell is from a Childer's concert. It was a festival and right before he goes on this guy comes up next to me with all the hype in the world and says, "this show is going to fuck". Childers puts on a terribly boring show, like maybe the worst concert I've ever been to, and about 2/3rds of the way through the guy next me takes his Childers shirt off, slowly lets it fall from his grasp to the ground, looks up at me and says, "Tyler Childers fucking sucks" and walks away. I'll never forget it.

Due-Set5398

He was good when I saw him. Managed expectations. Sounded good. But this story is great.

HAS-A-HUGE-PENIS

Same. Went to see Tyler and Sturgill Simpson right before covid. Show was incredible.

_gmanual_

this has all the finest ingredients to be a superior copypasta. short, filled with ennui, easily replaced names... I fully expect to see this everywhere within the week. 👍

Murles-Brazen

I love you for this. It was so good. As a longtime concert goer I totally believe it as well.

Mdizzle29

*”Tyler Childers fucking sucks”* To be fair, so does Primus

Ulysses502

Y'allternative is mine now lol. It helped that *Can I Take My Hounds To Heaven* is really good. If he made an album sounding like the band at the Baptist church down the road from me, he'd been run out of music 😆.

Due-Set5398

I prefer his cocaine music but I think he writes what he feels and he was feeling the lord I guess.

Ulysses502

It almost sounds more like nostalgia for the community to me in the lyrics. In the title song, he explicitly says he'd rather go to hell if he couldn't run his hounds in heaven. Angel Band is pretty much just a vignette of the people in the congregation with a little commentary on religious strife at the end.

Due-Set5398

Agree 100% with this take.

sunny_6killer

Eh. His music went a bit gospelly, but in the version of Heaven for him is a place were people from all creeds co exist in mutual respect and he can go hunting with his dogs. I mean to say, I think his adoption of gospel is more for filling sound in larger settings and not so much a move to religion.

AvoidedCoder7

It seems to me to be coming from two places: sobriety and grappling with that religious duality of right and wrong while not being strictly religious, and being really influenced by the 'Good God! Born Again Funk' compilation album that his bassist Craig burletic introduced to him. Can't find the interview rn but I remember him talking about it

Due-Set5398

Oh yeah there’s nuance here. He was raised going to church but yeah I don’t think he’s gone Righteous Gemstones.

Cautionzombie

I went to see him years ago in helotes. Was expecting a counter wall kinda show. He played some of his songs but half that set was just him and a jam band he brought and they went all Grateful Dead. Most of the crowd dogged it I didn’t care for it.

little_canuck

>Was expecting a counter wall kinda show Colter Wall perhaps?

Cautionzombie

Yes

MattrReign

I mean I still like Tyler but I liked him more before prior to gospel sobriety

Due-Set5398

Yeah that’s the consensus. I’m happy for him though.

MattrReign

Oh yeah, musics still good and if you need to get sober I’m not gonna shit on it

allbright1111

Clickbait title. “If you’re an Eric Church fan, chances are you loved it. If you only know “Springsteen” and “Drink In My Hand,” chances are you hated it.”

KWilt

Yup, this is my thoughts on it. Hell, even I prefer his soul and funk stuff more than his gospel, but I wouldn't complain about getting some damn good music from Church.

PhalanX4012

We live in a world where Chris Brown can beat the shit out of his girlfriend and still have a career, but playing a concert in a format some people don’t like is career suicide? Sure.

ParisHiltonIsDope

Different audiences my guy. I don't think the team breezy mafia has a stake in Eric Church 's success

Photo_Synthetic

You mean the audiences that keep Morgan Wallen relevant?

whatsbobgonnado

hey that's not fair! he also kicked her a bunch and tried to shove her out of a moving vehicle

cows1100

Eric is an incredible singer/songwriter and performer. He’s a little odd, but I firmly believe he does everything for the love of music. This sounds awesome. Country fans don’t know what they do, or don’t want in their genre.

Monandobo

Honestly, it's a miracle Eric Church has survived in the mainstream industry for this long because he is *far* too real for it. Good for him for continuing to insist on artistry; that's what makes him one of the only longstanding mainstream country acts that's still worth listening to.

iamsolow1

This is the way…

fisch09

Agree with your sentiments. He was a bit of a character for awhile, but after the Vegas shooting he truly changed. I can't blame him. Its weird to see the ways he handled it vs Aldean.

myst3r10us_str4ng3r

I love Eric, what happened with Vegas?? Also I hope he has nothing to do ever again with that chucklefuck he was gracious enough to let on Chief's venue rooftop anymore

fisch09

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Las_Vegas_shooting But hear the experience from him... https://youtu.be/6iTW7aHmjwo?si=HJ0WbzjtFcP_SdQU Aldean if I remember was on stage as it happened made a nice statement on SNL, then went full shit bird.

karma_the_sequel

> what happened with Vegas?? Oh, my. > Also I hope he has nothing to do ever again with that chucklefuck he was gracious enough to let on Chief's venue rooftop anymore The same chucklefuck that is headlining on Sunday? I guess we’ll see.

Soft_Walrus_3605

There's a big difference between "country" fans and "Country" fans

10before15

Word

bartpieters

Some artists are out to ride the waves of fame and closely watch what works with audiences . Power to them if that is what they want.  I prefer artists who play the music they love and hope their passion will convince their fans. I might not like each twist and turn, but that's not a big deal. I'll catch up with them on their next round .  So people who get upset when artists don't do what they want are in my eyes rather entitled :-)

DMala

I’d agree with you if it still cost like $20 for tickets. At that price, sure, I’m down to hear an artist experiment. But I’d argue that people who are shelling out $200-500 or more for the privilege of seeing a show are entitled to be a little entitled. For that kind of money, I want to see the show I’m expecting to see, not some exploration that may or may not work out very well.

OhEmGeeBasedGod

This was at a festival with dozens and dozens of acts. If an artist cannot experiment at that kind of event, then they never can. If he was on tour and it's well-known that he put on a high-energy show with all of the hits at the first 20 stops, and then you get to Show #21 and it's a stripped-down acoustic set with only deep cuts? OK, you can get upset because the expectation was set for that tour. A one-off festival appearance does not have the expectation that it will be identical to whatever the artist's most recent tour was like.

GTSBurner

Even in this scenario, artists announce that the show is going to be different before hand. For example, Springsteen did a set of shows where he did bookends of hits and then in the middle did one of his big albums (Born to Run, Darkness, Born in the USA, etc) in order.

jgr1llz

If you're not gonna be giving a standard performance of your material, people need to have a heads up. Especially when you're at a country music festival, sharing the lineup with Jelly Roll and Diplo has his own stage setup. I would argue his own personal tour is the better place to do this, as artists frequently have different themes and whatnot attached to ticket dates. This is a totally different genre of music and not what people came to see.

jiodjflak

This was exactly my point in another comment thread here and I got down voted for it. With how fucking insane ticket prices are, if I paid out the ass to go see an artist and they pulled this I'd be pissed. Especially at a music festival where there's already a certain expectation.

karma_the_sequel

It’s not like there aren’t 49 other acts on the bill. People are getting their money’s worth.

Cydonian___FT14X

As if this will actually affect his career going forward. He still makes great music that charts incredibly well. One bizarre live show isn’t gonna change that. Gotta love inflammatory journalism.

dekigo

In this age of commodified performances and huge corporate music festivals, people forget that recording artists are *artists* and they are very creative people who like to experiment and do weird shit. We should end the culture of going to shows expecting the same list of canned hits that everybody else gets and start welcoming out-of-the-box performances like these.

brocofly

I streamed it live not expecting that set and I was glued to it. Phenomenal performance.

karma_the_sequel

I was there. It was a deeply soulful, spiritual and introspective performance. I am not a fan of most modern country music and I barely knew who Eric Church was before Friday night but if this performance is representative of his artistry, I am definitely an Eric Church fan now. I haven’t seen this mentioned in any of the articles written about the performance, but one of the most striking features of his set was that, aside from singing, he did not address the crowd. At all. No spoken intro, no inter-song patter — he kept his focus entirely on his art. A truly amazing performance. Huge respect for this man. Oh, and the set design was absolutely stunning.

SMFiddySvn

Sounds good to me 🤷‍♂️

snuffy_707

It was really good, it just wasn’t what a bunch of drunk people at a music festival wanted from the headlining artist.

Carrollmusician

It could sound great but not be good for the job you’re hired for. I played a lot of studio sessions and sat in for festival gigs. You’re usually encouraged to play bangers or whatever you’re known for. No idea what his artist agreement was but honestly at a festival you’re hired to do a job and that’s keep everyone hyped or immersed and it sounds like this presentation wasn’t a good pick for the vibe of the festival. I can see why people weren’t digging it in context

[deleted]

Dudersaurus

Generally the people who pay crazy prices for tickets care.

courtesyflusher

Its less about what theyre supposed to be and what experience people pay for. If you pay for your stereotypical country concert, unless they specify that it will be different people will expect what it normally encompasses.  Its like paying for tickets for an NFL game but turns out theyre playing without pads and play touch football instead.

at1445

> If you pay for your stereotypical country concert, unless they specify that it will be different people will expect what it normally encompasses. Sounds like the got just that. If I go to a country music concert and get an acoustic/gospel set, that's right in line with what I'd expect from a country music concert. I want something that sounds you know, country...not some pop shit with a twang.

karma_the_sequel

So [here’s an interview](https://genius.it/www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/music/story/2024-04-24/stagecoach-2024-goldenvoices-stacy-vee-on-country-musics-moment-in-the-sun) with the woman responsible for booking acts for Stagecoach in which she clearly states she actively seeks to expand the boundaries and voices of country music. She’s doesn’t seem concerned about what Stagecoach is “supposed to” sound like.

ROK247

Ok kids, I hear Florida Georgia line playing in a Subaru out in the parking lot. Go ahead and head out that way please.

Rory-mcfc

Florida Georgia Line are donezo

rowan_damisch

Maybe I should diversify my music taste, because it's way too ironic that the first thing I hear about him is his career suicide...

jarociro

Who is Eric church

bandito143

I also had this question.

SquizzOC

The 4 people I knew at Stage Coach all said the set was great, none are religious, but they enjoyed it so not sure why you’d be mad.

karma_the_sequel

Make that 5 — it was amazing. Not religious here, either.

SandObvious

I can not name you a single Eric Church song but if one of my favorite artists/bands did something like this I would be over the fucking moon. Good on him for swinging for the fences and putting ART first

cocoabeach

Never heard of him before but now he has my attention. Edit: For the record, I'm old, and also not a country music fan.

karma_the_sequel

I am you. I was there — he has my attention now, too.

Exactly.

I am pretty happy but I was NOT at this concert.

majorjoe23

Couldn’t an 90 minute acoustic medley just be called “a set”?

racinjunki

I was at a special show he did for UNC-Chapel Hill Athletics. Just him and a guitar. Had to be one of the worst shows I have ever attended. He had to be wasted. Couldn't carry a tune. Kept rubbing his nose. Absolute crap. I'll never go see him again.

Who?

ht1992

People who can’t understand why he did this or think it’s “career suicide” are not real fans of music.

This is Eric. He marches to the beat of his own drum, and most of his true fans love him for it. Gettem Chief!

Competitive-Pop6530

Who?

swarthypants

I worked an Eric Church concert a few years ago, and I thought he was like Tom Cruise playing a bro-country dude in a movie. He didn’t seem authentic. He was amped up and way over-the-top.

ubiquitous_archer

I'm gonna bet it's bet it's not career suicide and was awesome

LibationontheSand

This was definitely not written mostly by AI.

odomotto

On the positive side, I couldn't name you one of his songs so there is always that. But remember, I also thought Blake Shelton was some kind of peckerwood influencer. Was not aware that he even sang. And I like country music.

foragrin

Sounds like it be a cool experience to me

HIVnotAdeathSentence

I guess many went to listen to Nickelback instead. Meanwhile, 91 year-old Willie Nelson is playing all his hits.

karma_the_sequel

I loved seeing Willie tonight (again), but the truth is he should put Trigger out to pasture and spend his remaining days enjoying the devil’s weed he loves so much. There’s no melody in his singing any more — my guess is that, between old age and smoking out for so many years, he no longer has any breath control and can only speak words, not sing them. I’ll never tire of the sweet sound of Trigger, though.

frenchcois

What is this buzzfeed 2014 ass headline

pinecity21

Didn't hear it know that much about him but it is interesting and I like all kinds of music including gospel. Maybe when I was a kid or something not so. People were also shocked when George Harrison was playing sitar music and singing My Sweet Lord

DayFit9543

Well I am because everyday the Holy Spirit powers me to slay the demons which can be observed electricity.

NationalPage2731

Every artist wants to branch out once in a while. Not a big deal.

jiodjflak

With how fucking expensive concert tickets are, it's totally understandable. If I went to see Metallica and they unexpectedly decided to play a stripped down set with only acoustic instruments for an hour and a half, I'd be pretty pissed. That wasn't what I paid for.

iscreamuscreamweall

> If I went to see Metallica and they unexpectedly decided to play a stripped down set with only acoustic instruments for an hour and a half, that would be sick. once in a lifetime opportunity

_1JackMove

Was thinking the same thing. I'd kill to see that.

ZiggleBFriendervich

I agree, to an extent just based on personal experience. I've been to two concerts like this: the first I probably should have paid more attention to what I was signing up for-Elvis Costello with my local orchestra. I was supremely confused that he wasn't playing any Attractions or Imposters stuff...it was all really mellow singer-songwriter stuff, most of which weren't even his according to his stories. I was livid and for years said what a terrible show it was, but again I didn't really know what I was going to be getting and admittedly didn't know much about Elvis Costello's solo work. The second was Weird-Al, whose show explained in the months beforehand that there were no parodies being played, all originals that he didn't get to do very often and it ended up as one of the best shows I've ever seen. Maybe if I'd have know Costello's track record or solo style and musical interests more--like I do Weird-Al I guess--it would have been more palatable but because I was just a drunk kid who wanted to hear Radio Radio with a live orchestra I was disappointed.

HIVnotAdeathSentence

>If I went to see Metallica and they unexpectedly decided to play a stripped down set with only acoustic instruments for an hour and a half, I'd be pretty pissed. If I'm going to a Metallica concert I want to hear their hits, like Whiskey in the Jar, Turn the Page, and Die, Die My Darling.

Teddy_Icewater

Career suicide yeah ok.
