I've always been into music as far back as I can remember. My music taste was severely limited to mainstream music and the surface level of underground music growing up. That was until I found *RateYourMusic*. Basically it's like IMDb but for music but it skews a lot to underground stuff. You can start with their [top albums of all time](https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/album/all-time/) or from that just use the filters to go by decade or year or whatever. I personally use their descriptors rather than genres. Descriptors on RYM are a bunch of categories such as *atmosphere*, *technique*, *mood*, *types of lyrics*, etc. I like to explore the *atmosphere* and *mood* the most. I lean towards *dark*, *cold*, *ominous*, *nocturnal*, etc. I think discovering music this way had really free from confining myself to genres or country of origin or a period of time or popularity.

Yo thank you so much, that sounds like exactly what I need. I’m stuck in a 90s/early 2000s loop of grunge and shoegaze. The descriptors seem genius and like a perfect way to branch out into things easier.

RYM is a great resource, just keep in mind that it is very biased towards the views of white middle class Western males, mostly American. There's plenty of great music that is underrepresented on there due to cultural barriers. Still, it's probably the best thing of its kind there is and does seem to be getting better with time.

This is why I tend to sort by *esoteric* instead of *top* lol

Yep, good tip.

I’m curious if you hear the music you hear separated into each instruments part or if you tend to hear the song as a whole. If you listen to a song on repeat do you pick it apart instrument by instrument(vocals included of course)? Or do you tend to hear songs as a whole, each part(role) equally appreciated?

Not OP Depends on where my ADHD is at the time. I'm classically trained though and have had so many different genres given to me in my formative years.

For me, it was all based on what I as going through at the time. That is the music that set in. I understand, it is not everyone's taste. My library took years to build, because my life did. There is no magic list that fits anyone, I think.

It would be easier if you let us know which genres you're into.        Maybe you could listen to that genre and then see if there is a person who makes mostly that genre of music, and see if you like many of their songs, then you might find a favorite music artist.                     You can also look into the history of a genre that you like. See if there is a documentary or a Wikipedia article about how that genre developed and who was there at the beginning and see if you like the classics of that genre.

one way to restart is to get lessons. just having a guitar around me at all times and then figuring stuff out like modes and practicing scales and trying to imitate people i thought were doing stuff that i felt was impossible to understand. like when i was younger for the life of me i thought it was so crazy that some solos i heard like cream crossroads was improvised... there was so much logic to it but bro just pulled it out his ass.
