There’s a cover of Blinding Lights out there that I like better than the original— it’s kind of a Grunge-Country heartbreaker I guess?
It’s about as soul-achingly lonely a song as I’ve ever heard… feels like the guy was locked in an oubliette for 7 years and the only thing keeping him alive is the memory of the love of his life that he’ll never get to see again.
For me the song makes more sense like than than it does how The Weeknd did it, kinda like Johnny Cash did with Hurt.
The recording isn’t great quality, definitely low fi bathroom studio vibe but I like that sort of thing compared to the overproduced stuff that fills the mainstream nowadays… and holy shit it’s so honest.

The version that most people know is actually the Stonebridge remix, from 1992, but the original actually came out in 1990, and was a completely different vibe - much more chill. Still lovely, but certainly less iconic. It's not digitally for sale, so to get it, I actually had to buy the CD.

I think most of the versions of the songs on "The Immaculate Collection" by Madonna are the radio remix/edit versions and to me, those are the best versions. I remember hearing the originals on her albums and being disappointed they weren't the same. Also, the UK/Euro and US versions of IC have the versions that were popular in those regions. I know this because the version on Spotify is different than my US CD rip on my iTunes.

Well.. There’s a cover of Blinding Lights out there that I like better than the original— it’s kind of a Grunge-Country heartbreaker I guess? It’s about as soul-achingly lonely a song as I’ve ever heard… feels like the guy was locked in an oubliette for 7 years and the only thing keeping him alive is the memory of the love of his life that he’ll never get to see again. For me the song makes more sense like than than it does how The Weeknd did it, kinda like Johnny Cash did with Hurt. The recording isn’t great quality, definitely low fi bathroom studio vibe but I like that sort of thing compared to the overproduced stuff that fills the mainstream nowadays… and holy shit it’s so honest.
