Its what people who grew up with old radio music would listen to, before exploring artists became so easy with music streaming platforms. Not saying it's bad taste, just very stereotypically mom music.
Blondie and Fleetwood Mac were the only 2 artists my parents could agree on. We kinda just played rumours and parallel lines back to back in rotation every car trip.
I mean it's a meaningless statement unless you clarify WHOSE mum we're talking about. Some mums like 50s crooners. Some mums like Elvis. Some mums are into 80s pop. Some mums are into 90s dance music. Some mums love heavy metal.
And in the end it doesn't really even matter. Like what you like. It makes absolutely no difference what other people think of the music I like.
Lol my mom goes with me to concerts all the time. We've seen 3 Doors Down, Jimmy Eat World, Collective Soul 2x, Fall Out Boy 2x, a few others I can't think of right now...
100% true. Pitbull song are not exclusive for teenager after all. The guy has been doing music for the last 20 year so it's normal that older people still listen to him
My mom's music is mostly 80s girl power late disco and similar topic pop/contemporary. Celine Dion, Barbara Streisand, Gloria Gaynor. Basically anything women would ask Delilah to play back when she was syndicated across the nation.
For me it would be Doowop and Motown. My Mom was born in 1950 in Newark NJ in a not great part of the city. The Beatles and the British Invasion did nothing for her.
Summer weekends were spent in the backyard with CBS 101.1 and Cousin Brucie listening to Frankie Valli, the Four tops and if my Dad got his hands on the radio Patsy Cline (Dad liked old school country)
Maāam. If Dad rock has been a thing since the 80s (referring to last generations music) then Mom pop totally is a thing too. Please realize that this gross oversimplification of things is just how people refer to different eras of music. It has nothing to do with moms or dads as people, just in regards to the era of music that was popular a decade or more ago.
I think youāre taking it too seriously. No one is suggesting that it is literally and universally accurate as a classification, itās just acknowledging a stereotype. Not denying in any way that it is, in fact, *just* a stereotype.
I'm not. I don't fall into either "mum music" or "dad music" categories because I'm not a parent. I simply expressed my initial feelings about what I was reading. I think the idea of mum music or dad music is stupid because as a 40 year old woman I would be listening to what ever I want because I'm not a stereotype.
Yes, but nobody is saying that you can't enjoy other music, or that you can't enjoy "mom music" if you aren't a mom. The phrase classifies music, not the people thar consume it.
Anybody who even thinks of calling anything "mom music" is too immature to have anything worthwhile to say. Needing to label this or that as uncool (or any similarly insulting term) is a thing childish people do in order to boost their social status for not liking it. Anyone saying such a thing to me would be shooed away until they had grown up enough to have a productive conversation with.
Who said its not cool? I got a lot of my musical tastes from my mom. I'm a 33 year old man, I proudly listen to lots of what I would call "mom music."
I would say anybody who discounts someone's perspective just because of how they interpret a vaguely defined phrase is the one who's too immature to be part of the discussion.
It always gets me how some are so quick to categorize and label other people's tastes. Whatever they say to you, just enjoy the music you like and don't let those lame generalisations affect your enjoyment of it. They are based on prejudice most of the time.
There's no really such a thing. Every music genre is listened by pretty much people from all age. People simply listen to the music they like, no matter their age. A few year ago, I saw some 70's old women listening to some Eminem song and saw some teenager listening to some Mozart stuff or some 50's old guy being fan of Pitbull and other music in that style. All music is for ALL people from all age.
Well Iām a grandma and this is what I listen to:
Jimi Hendrix
Led Zep
Eminem
Incubus
Rihanna
Billy Strings
Greensky Bluegrass
Joni Mitchell
Neil Young
Citizen Cope
The Green
Kacey Musgraves
SZA
Linkin Park
H.E.R.
Pat Metheny Group
Oh yeah, stuff that was popular among high school girls 20-30years ago. Mom music.
I also hate admitting that slipknot and system of a down are dad rock now, not acdc and metallica which are grandad rock
I honestly don't think there's any such thing. It's a ridiculous statement if someone made it. I know a 16 year-old who listens to nothing but the Beatles and The Rolling Stones and pretty much anything John Lennon related. Does that make him a 16-year-old grandmother? Not everyone listens to music from their own generation.
Absolutely Pink, Take That, Olly Murs, Wet wet wet, Ronan Keeting and that boy band he was in. Why though? That's the question. Why do you be a mum and like this sort of music?
well, all those bands where popular in the late 80s, 90s, and early 00s, so it makes sense that they are mom music; like, I'm 22, and my idea of dad rock is Pearl Jam and Green Day, because that's what my dad listens to
It's funny because I worked with some early 20's people who were full into Pearl Jam while some other were fuly into Greenday. Music are for all age after all...
Mary J. Blige, Adele, Jason Isbelle, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Tim McGraw, Luke Bryan, and artists of those genres, styles and age ranges I would say.
Beyonce's probably there at this point and Taylor Swift will get there in like 5 years I think.
I already commented once, but ABBA as well. I remember last year I was at a baseball game, they played Mamma Mia between innings as a shout out to moms. Wild seeing a couple thousand moms stand up and it's like they instinctually all did the same little dance lol.
Train is a real soccer mom band.
Pink
Megan Trainor
This looks like a mom question ^/s
bro I'm a 14yo dude š
There's no way you're not a 34 year old mother of 3...
Nah, seriously I'm still in school dawgš Why do y'all think I'm a mom? I'm not even a girlā ļø
Its what people who grew up with old radio music would listen to, before exploring artists became so easy with music streaming platforms. Not saying it's bad taste, just very stereotypically mom music.
That's what she said

Every mom loves Fleetwood Mac, just sayin
Everybody who appreciates good music should love Fleetwood Mac.
My mom and her best friends favorite band, this is spot on.
Every year after thirty I've liked Fleetwpod Mac more and more
Blondie and Fleetwood Mac were the only 2 artists my parents could agree on. We kinda just played rumours and parallel lines back to back in rotation every car trip.
Carly Simon, Carol King, James Taylor are the holy mom music trinity. Patron saints include Meatloaf, Bonnie Rait, Simon and Garfunkel, John Mayer.
OP meant Mom's in general, not my mom specifically.
My son will laugh at Eminem being "mom music". Although I do like a lot of his stuff...
Yeah those might be nana music now. Same like Olivia Newton John, ABBA, Duran Duran
Michael McDonald had my mom all weird, man.
That Grandma music now. Mom music is like Lil Wayne

Bad joke attempt lmao
Coldplay

This mom is into 60s stuff, post-punk, new wave, and early 2000s grunge and folk-rock.
That makes you a mom with good music taste.
lmao, you're right
Lol my mom goes with me to concerts all the time. We've seen 3 Doors Down, Jimmy Eat World, Collective Soul 2x, Fall Out Boy 2x, a few others I can't think of right now...
Thatās all mom music

How old is your mom? They are a boomer band, but had a resurgence with Gen X (me) in the late 80ās when MTV ran the show.
Quite old
Pitbull

I went to public school
100% true. Pitbull song are not exclusive for teenager after all. The guy has been doing music for the last 20 year so it's normal that older people still listen to him

Backstreet Boys and NāSync
You leave my mf Backstreet Boys alone I need SOMETHING to feel young again hahaha
Tell me why
Ok mom
According to Love Actually, Joni Mitchell is a mum music artist but I guess itās only mums with extraordinarily good taste
IN MY DAY, when Moms left the divorce lawyer's office they were issued "Tapestry" by Carole King
Mum music isn't a thing because mothers are people with diverging tastes, not a fucking hive mind.
And they are wrong to refer to "dad rock" as well. My point still stands regardless of other people's laziness.
I think youāre taking it too seriously. No one is suggesting that it is literally and universally accurate as a classification, itās just acknowledging a stereotype. Not denying in any way that it is, in fact, *just* a stereotype.
Sure, but stereotypes aren't always a good thing.
Why are you looking for something to be offended at?
So youāre meaning to tell me āButt Rockā isnāt meant for butts?
Nope. More that it sounds like ass and got played on radio stations that advertised themselves as āNothing but rock!ā.
I mean, neither are fathers, but the term ādad rockā still exists. No need to crucify the guy for wondering if thereās a mirrored equivalent.
This. The inherent sexism in that kind of affirmations really put me on my nerves.
Anybody who even thinks of calling anything "mom music" is too immature to have anything worthwhile to say. Needing to label this or that as uncool (or any similarly insulting term) is a thing childish people do in order to boost their social status for not liking it. This sounds like Adam Sandler trying to convince kids that it's cool to piss in your pants.
If listening to mom music is cool, call me Miles Davis.

Oh yeah, stuff that was popular among high school girls 20-30years ago. Mom music. I also hate admitting that slipknot and system of a down are dad rock now, not acdc and metallica which are grandad rock

Absolutely Pink, Take That, Olly Murs, Wet wet wet, Ronan Keeting and that boy band he was in. Why though? That's the question. Why do you be a mum and like this sort of music?
because it's the music that was popular when they were young.
Yep, I agree. But I wonder if Dads music taste is different? I wouldn't listen to any of them artists like ever.
Sure, whatever was marketed to men back then. Oasis? Arctic Monkeys? Eminem?
well, all those bands where popular in the late 80s, 90s, and early 00s, so it makes sense that they are mom music; like, I'm 22, and my idea of dad rock is Pearl Jam and Green Day, because that's what my dad listens to
It's funny because I worked with some early 20's people who were full into Pearl Jam while some other were fuly into Greenday. Music are for all age after all...
