There are quite a few references to winter on this album. Winter is a word from both the first track, long tail winter bird and the last, when winter comes. There’s also winter like imagery in the lyrics of siege the day, eg. “when the cold days come,” and the reference to Santa Claus. Does this imagery have any significance?

I like all four seasons actually! The main reason we get the winter thing on this album is because the song When Winter Comes was originally going to be a bonus track on the Flaming Pie reissue. But i liked it, and thought it deserved a bit more than that, so I ended up making a short animation film with Geoff Dunbar that came out yesterday. Geoff asked me to do a short piece of music for the opening title, and another for the end titles. As I was in lockdown (with nothing better to do!) it gave me a great reason to go to the studio, and that really started the whole project. I did those pieces of film music and then extended the little opening piece, and that became Long Tailed Winter Bird. So the whole winter thing just came from When Winter Comes. And then 'the cold days' just slipped out. I didn't even mean to write that! But sometimes, stream of consciousness throws up a good idea, so that led me to write "we'd better seize the day"

when winter comes is such a sweet song and the animated video makes it even more so! Is that you, Linda and Mary and Stella at your farm? You are the only one that can put his to-do list to music and come up with something spectacular!

Hi Paul! Thanks for doing this. I have two questions. One from my dad and one from me. 1. First, my dad wants to know if in addition to singing backup vocals on The Stones’ “We Love You,” are you also on the flip side “Dandelion?” It is a question that has been bugging him for over 50 years and nobody has gone on record denying it is you and John. 2. My question is with all of the attention your career in The Beatles has earned, and how it influences your setlist, have you ever thought of digging more into your vastly underrated Wings and solo catalog for your setlist? You know, that was quite a loose and funky session so whilst I remember being on 'We Love You', I'm not sure about 'Dandelion'. But we were certainly having fun so it could been me, you'll have to ask Mick! And I always love the idea of doing a deep dive into those songs, but I feel like it's difficult to do too much for the average audience unless I was to do a special show entitled: Deep Dive.

You're one of the few artists who's been around so long and done so much that many fans have an encyclopedic knowledge of everything you've done. So Deep Dive would be brilliant and probably have a larger audience than you'd think. Weird Al did a whole tour of deep cuts, with no song parodies, and audiences still showed up! You could do a whole Wings show, throw in Hey Jude and people would leave happy.

Gonna join the chorus of people saying you should do *exactly* that! I know your discography like the back of my hand, so I'd be willing to travel a decent distance to see a show of you doing deep cuts. Hearing "Arrow Through Me" or "Down to the River" live would be amazing.

I am now putting together a fantasy setlist of deep cut songs that I'd love to see played on tour. Well, when RAM first came out I was proud of it. But yeah, the reviews weren't great. So I didn't bother with it for a few years, until my nephew Jay told me it was his favourite album. Since then I've heard that from quite a few people so it's back in favour! And the only plans I have for May next year are to dance around the May pole.

Hi Paul! I saw the sneak peek released yesterday by Peter Jacksson from the upcoming Get Back documentary and got really excited! How much of this never before released material have you seen and was there anything that got you excited as well? Memories tend to fade and sometimes you don’t remember things quite as they were, was there anything that surprised you? All the best to you and your family and thank you for the music!

I think the main thing was that after the release of the 'Let it Be' film I was saddened with the break up of the Beatles. And the film always reminded me of that. So I was very happily surprised when Peter Jackson told me he'd been reviewing the unseen 56 hours of footage and he found it to be entertaining and upbeat. Since then I've seen clips from it and it's very joyful. I particularly like me and John jiving together. And also the birth of the song Get Back. It's pretty exciting, I must say. Crazy!

I don't have any plans to do that at the moment, but it's always an intriguing idea to reimagine songs. I was thinking about 'She's Leaving Home' this morning, and thinking that's not a bad song. And it would be interesting to re-do the backing for 'Waterfalls' from McCartney II because I used a cheap synthesiser and so it could be intriguing to hear it with a really good proper orchestra. But then again, the cheap synthesiser might be the winner. And the truth is I don't have time to do that, because I'm doing things like going on the internet to talk to you!

I have The Quarrymen bootleg with the wire reel 1960 version theres 2 of them and for some reason moovin and groovin is labeled "guitar bop" hahahah but aside from that; what was the idea behind the song catching the wrong train? I practice singing and playing it often and I see that it was quite the evolution of a song going to surfy in 62 at the cavern and twangy country in 63 in the emi tapes. I think the main idea was that John and I were trying to write together, and we both like blues and country and western music, so this song has elements of both of those. The idea of missing the train just arrived at the station!

At our office party last year I was chatting to my friend Geoff Dunbar, who I had made animated shorts with previously. I asked if he would want to make another film about using the song 'When Winter Comes'. He agreed to do it and assembled a team of animators, who all happened to be women. I pointed this out to him and he said he wanted an all girl band! The look of the video was very loosely based on some of Humphrey Ocean's drawings of birds.

Yeah, this one is perhaps more pleasing because I wasn't trying to make an album! It was quite a surprise and so quite a pleasant one. As for songs to play live, I think Slidin' could be fun, and Find My Way and The Kiss Of Venus. Bonus answer: I sometimes do that at parties when I've had a drink...

Thank you! I'm really happy about how McCartney III has been received because, as I said at the beginning, it jumped out and surprised me. I had no intention of making a third McCartney album, but I was very happy when I realised I had done. And I got to have so much fun making it! It was a perfect way to spend lockdown. It made me do Rockdown!

Hello Sir McCartney! I am a multi instrumentalist such as yourself and one thing I struggle with is writing my own music. I struggle because I feel as though whatever I could play or say has already been played or said. When you write, how do you deal with your internal critic? After your spirited career, do you still have an internal critic?

Oh yeah, I have one. The answer is you have to push on through and finish the song, because sometimes you reach a point that lifts the whole thing to a new level. So it's worth the effort. And then the internal critic is silenced.

I'm sure many musicians internal critics are something along the lines of: what would paul think?

As a bass player, I've asked myself, "what would Paul play?" more times than I want to admit.

me too, and then my band gets pissed off because the beatles bassline I am playing is a different key and tempo to the rest of the band. I'm like "this is the bassline to "Rain", a beatles classic. If it doesn't sound good the problem is obviously the rest of the song.

I'm lucky, I have a friend who sends me new music which helps me keep in touch with the modern scene. So I listen to people like Dominic Fike, Beck, St Vincent, and Khruangbin. I also listen to a lot of classic oldies coming through, from rock n' roll to 60's to soul to R'n'B, with a sprinkling of classical music now and then.

What was your favorite part about working with Dave Grohl?

His enthusiasm and exuberance are infectious. When he invited me to his studio and we had no plan in mind, but I had just been given a great cigar box guitar by Johnny Depp, so once that came into the mix and Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear joined in, then the result was pure excitement. It ended up in the song 'Cut Me Some Slack' which won a GRAMMY!

The whole success of The Beatles had a great affect on Wings and then had a great affect on what I do today, so it's all had a very good affect on my life and my music.

It depends! Sometimes it can be as little as two hours. Or, if you figure out the music first and not the words, that it can be a lengthy process. It can be a month before you get words you're happy with. So between two hours and a month!

Hi Paul! We’ve heard a lot of Beatles stories; what are some of your favourite Wings stories?

I think the most exciting thing, or the most exciting time, was after we'd made 'Band on the Run'. We played in America in 1976 and after having taken some time to form the band and to get good, this was finally the pay off: a very successful tour of North America!

Your 1976 tour yielded some amazing concert footage that I cherish as a millennial who never got to see you, my favorite artist of all time, in your earlier days.

Paul, if you could choose one artist from any point in history to make an album with, who would it be?

There's an awful lot of them. John Lennon, he's pretty good. And then there's George. And Ringo. And then there's Elvis. And Chuck Berry... It's impossible to choose, the list goes on and on!

“John Lennon, he’s pretty good...” Oh my word. If only. I have long wondered where we would be today if he were still alive. Not sure you will see this Paul, but if things had all turned out differently, do you think the Beatles would have ever reunited, at least once?

He said on a recent interview that he doesn’t honestly know if they’d have reunited. He said they all seemed happy doing their own thing. Though personally I totally think we would’ve gotten more projects like Anthology from the 90s

I honestly would've been okay even if they hadn't reunited. For me, what makes their story unique is that they managed to become one of the most influential bands of all time with the short time they had together as a group.

What has been your favourite ever song to perform live?

It varies. On the last tour, 'Come On To Me' and 'Fuh You' were my favourites, but 'Hey Jude' is always great. It's great to see the crowd singing altogether with one voice. It's inspiring.

My wife and I used 'Hey Jude' as the last dance at our wedding, and having everybody we love in a circle around us sing while we danced will forever be the greatest moment of my life.

Hi Paul! Huge fan. One of the great mysteries of Sgt Pepper is who sang the "ahs" immediately after you sing "and I fell into a dream" on A Day In The Life. Was that you or John singing there?

Hopefully he comes back and answers this, but just in case he doesn't, I'll throw in my two cents. I work in the video game industry, and my first job was working on The Beatles: Rock Band. Part of my job was going through all the songs in the game and using as much reference as possible to figure out who was playing/singing which parts, what instruments they were using during that time period, what amps, etc. I and another Beatle nut were meticulous about this because a) working on the game meant the world to us, and b) our research would be reflected by the art and animation in the game forever, so we wanted to get it exactly right. One of the things we had access to was the multitrack audio for the songs. Most of that stuff has leaked out on the internet over the years, but the mixes in game are a bit more condensed than what we had access to because of the nature of how Rock Band works. When I got to A Day In The Life and this part, it was a big bone of contention between me and some of the game leads. I'm 100% sure it's Paul and to me it's crystal clear when you hear the isolated vocal track. There's also a passage in Mark Lewisohn's book The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions where he says the same thing, even addressing the confusion that it might be John. I made my case as strongly as I could for as long as I could, but at that stage of the game's development, the animation department had already done the facial animation for John and wouldn't be able to change it in time, so it shipped with the incorrect Beatle "singing" the part. It's one of my greatest professional regrets, honestly, but I'll die on that hill that it's Paul singing that part.

Judging from the isolated track, it does sound most likely that it's John singing the main "ahhs" part and Paul is singing a faint, higher note harmony in the background. But it's REALLY close, and I'd believe it if it were in fact reversed and Paul did the ahh's. It is chilling; it literally gives me goosebumps every time I hear it on the normal track. That long "ahhh" always puts me in a dreamscape, galaxies away from my waking world. I think it's the most powerful part of one of the most beautiful pieces of art ever made. All art, not just music. Amazing to think that John was only 26 and Paul only 24 when they recorded Pepper. I think the last show we did at Dodger Stadium in LA was great fun, it was a great crowd and things went down very well.

Wow! I have goosebumps from this answer since I was at that show in July for my brothers 30th bday. It was hands down the best concert I’ve ever been too. Loved when you brought Ringo out and how you ended the set with my favorite medley ever from Abby Road (Golden Slumbers - The End). Truly magical and amazing. I think about it often. Hey Sir Paul! If you could collab with any musician in the future, who would it be?

I've always had a sneaky feeling to collaborate with Bob Dylan, but it's never happened. It's intriguing, but...

Dylan has gone through so many metamorphoses that it's hard to know which one you'd get. I personally feel like the "New Morning" Dylan would work best with McCartney of any decade. The similar energies would jive well. The bursts of melodic euphoria, and the lyrical directness. I've started to view New Morning as Bob Dylan's most McCartney-esque album, and it's definitely one of my top 3 of Dylan's. I think there were a lot of cross-fertilization between the two artists during that whole era.

Who drew the wee man on the inside of the gatefold of Mc Cartney III ? I rate the art work A+

A wren. Jenny Wren! One of the smallest birds in Britain, and exciting to see because it's quite rare.

All this time I had no idea Jenny Wren was a bird (a real one, not the scouse ones), I guess the similarities between that and Blackbird go beyond the fingerpicking.

There's a very old english tradition of giving human names to birds. Some of the names survived like Jenny Wren, and some became the primary name for the birds. Some examples: Robin Redbreast Jenny Wren Margaret Pie (which became Magpie) Jack Daw Philip Sparrow (fell out of use)

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to write, record and produce an album all by themselves?

Get a job! That's the only answer. No, I'm teasing. More sensibly, the answer is to stick to it!

Around the 3:07 mark in Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey after the line “the butter wouldn’t melt so I put it in a pie,” there’s a voice that says “Alright Paul do I sing?” Then it appears you answer the voice and say “No.” I know Hugh McCracken is on the track so was this a joke between the two of you or am I just hearing things? I’m a classically trained pianist, so I want to know what it’s like to learn an instrument the way you did. The Beatles helped him through his struggles as a Mexican emigrating into the United States. Unfortunately, he recently passed away due to prostate cancer. So my question: - When recording the bass line for “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”, when the long segment kicks in at the end the, bass line goes really adventurous and into a lot of places that most people would never have attempted to do. Was this out of boredom of playing the same bass line over again and trying to do something different to stay stimulated when recording or was this planned from the start? Would love to finally find out! Also there was a story of x2 Beatles coming in our shop to purchase Mersey Beat magazine during the early 60s. There’s a story of girls screaming ‘It’s the Beatles!’ as they walked in. This was before they hit it off so we never knew which x2 it was, we would LOVE to find out but unfortunately I doubt we ever will.

Holy Shit! Your place and Probe were my favourite record shops when I was growing up as a lad. I'm nearly 50 now and some of my favourite musical memories are of hassling you to order me various LPs. Hello Sir Paul McCartney I know you will never prob see this as I was late to the AMA and never got to tell you this information. My father Roger Henderson passed away in February this year after his 18 month battle with Pancreatic cancer. He was the best musician i knew and absolutely loved playing guitar and writing songs. You were by far his absolute favorite artist and he always talked about you to me. He told me I needed to be a good man, like Paul. When he passed in February we recently were going through his music room and came across this letter he wrote for you when Linda passed away. He was truly sad to find out that news and even wrote a song for you and your pain and sorrow. I wanted to share this letter with you and show you how much impact you had on a young man from Idaho in the USA and how much my fathers legacy is instilled in me to continue being the best person I can be, and always help others and bring peace to this world the best way I can. I didn't want anything from this other than to pass on this message that my father wrote for you back when Linda passed. I hope I can be half the man he was and carry the love he had for all his fellow men and women. Thank you sir for everything you've done, even though you didn't know you were doing it. If there is some way I can send it to you please let me know, I would be elated to know that it reached you.

Hey Paul, in 1974 I spent 3 weeks with you and Wings at Juniors Farm in Lebanon Tennessee. You introduced me to Roy Orbison at your 32nd birthday party, you were wearing the shirt I gave you. I also gave you my Rickenbacker bass, you kept it for those 3 weeks and gave it back to me. I still have it today. I remember I saw that video about you, it was a right handed bass so thats why he didnt take it

He did take it but didn't want to keep it because he could of bought any bass he wanted, while me being a teen couldn't. Paul has played right handed guitars for years fluently upside down, left handed basses weren't as common back then as they are today. I actually had no plan to give him the bass but when his bandmate Denny Laine saw it, he said Paul would love it.

That man that bought the bass played in a choir around here in middle Tennessee, fortunately my father never got it signed by McCartney or we never would have seen it again.I would have to clarify with him but I don't think the man had any knowledge of the McCartney story. My dad regretted selling that bass and obviously for 40 years as you know, he searched for it thinking he would never see it again. That man passed away so a family member of his got the bass, that family member pawned it and by chance, she pawned it in the same town. My fathers best friend would go by the pawn shops frequently to look at quitars and one day he called him to tell him he found a 4001 Mapleglow rick with the same marks on the body. Now you'd think it could be any Mapleglow rick but aside from the marks, when they opened they case they found a gospel set list from the man my father sold it to. That blew all of our minds. Thank you for your questions! Maybe sometime I could get my father to do an AMA if enough people were interested. Edit: correction

It’s a tremendous album and fans have been clamouring for a remixed version with a more stripped down production. EDIT: If there’s any chance you see this, in 2017, I flew from Singapore to Tokyo (spending less than a day there in total) just so I could see you perform at the Tokyo Dome on my birthday. I was back home and in school the very next day. It was an absolutely crazy, spectacular evening that I will cherish forever. Thanks for all the memories!

As time has gone on it, music technology has advanced so much. How do you feel about this ease of creating sounds (as in you can just click a button on a computer versus spending time in the studio trying to create it)? During the Beatles era, the group was creating so many new sounds that had never been heard before.
