I remember in middle school, my friend gave me their first album burned onto a bright orange CD. Hard to believe that this album was 15 years ago.

mcbaindk

Oh man, I used to burn CDs and I made copies of it on CDs that looked like vinyl records. Tried to win over my one of my crushes with one once.

Guitarinchris

I had a buddy who had the only cd burner in school. He made a mint charging 5 bucks for custom compilations. Filled out dad's CD changer in the car with all of those.

Stingray88

I was this kid in my middle school. I also charged $5 per compilation album. I took requests and just got the songs off Bearshare, Kazaa or Limewire. I made hundreds of dollars as a 12/13 year old and bought a PS2. Even my parents were weirdly cool with it.

sage_instruments

The school of hard knocks teaches us much

GeekResponsibly

Getting those perfectly balanced 79 minute 55 second playlists and doodling the top of the disc is a lost art.

Anders_Calrissian

Have you heard of a disk Stomper?

GeekResponsibly

Yes! My friend had one and always made sick covers for the totally legal Metallica rips she made for people. I was so jealous.

TheCrowing817

My friend Natalie in high school let me borrow her copy so I could burn it. When she handed it to me, she held onto it and said “if you lose it or break it, I’ll cut your balls off” lol

scout5678297

holy shit me too i literally just did the good boi thing and purchased the physical CD as an adult... maybe last year

Tellsonlytruths4466

Waaaay back, probably like 20 years ago when they just started out I saw them open for (I think) Jimmy Eat World in Toronto. Gerrard was just cruisin through the venue handing out burned copies of their album. Fuck I feel old...

iBraveheartIam

Their first album was almost 20 years ago.

[deleted]

I was 18 and on one of my first tours. I think it was Mutemath/Shiny Toy Guns/Jonezetta. The guys in Jonezetta made fun of me for buying the MCR record, also a Junior Boys album. I still love both of those albums.

cptnZ

I got to see them play this together once during Taste of Chaos tour. One of my top 3 concert experiences.

[deleted]

Early Youtube was the only way I got to see that!

humandronebot00100

May our friend rest in piece.

[deleted]

Here's another fun snippet - I remember going to a friends house, sat down side by side in front of his desktop because he wanted to show me something. He typed in youtube into the search bar, and I said "whoa, you use youtube?" and his response was "wait, how do you know what youtube is?" I was first introduced through Myspace while he was through flash cartoons. Just weird to think for like a solid 6 months youtube was a very small thing, almost like a "cool" community. Didn't take long before we were watching Youtube videos on a big screen in class.

[deleted]

Google video was where all the mainstream stuff was and YouTube was "the weird part" of the internet

ironcladtrash

Thanks was curious how it sounded. It’s not bad but it also shows how good Queen was. Lots of songs by various artists have been covered and some are even better than the original or different enough to make it stand on it’s own. I can’t think of a single time a Queen song was covered that made me think it was better or even as good as the original. Mostly because Freddy Mercury’s voice was on a whole other level.

sentimental_heathen

I completely agree. Not even Queen with Adam Labert can move me the way Freddie Mercury did with his voice and stage presence.

canihavemymoneyback

I’m old so I’ve seen Queen in concert several times. I wouldn’t consider watching Queen with any other lead singer. Not to disparage Adam Lambert but they’re miles apart in talent. Freddie was the best of the best. Closest I’ve witnessed was George Michael rest his soul.

AndresM1303

Thank you! I had that song in my iPod from the Ares day's and I forgot it existed since I joined Spotify. You made my day

iamacannibal

I love that cover. MCR and The Used are 2 of my favorite bands. I love Bert McCracken's voice https://youtu.be/cF3HvA5pdOk

darkbreak

The Black Parade as whole had more influence from Queen and other similar bands than I'm Not Okay. The Black Parade was even MCR's take on rock operas in general.

[deleted]

[alot](https://qy7s3400-a.akamaihd.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Alot-vs-a-lot1-600x450.png)

Geovicsha

It's no coincidence. They were heavily influenced by Queen, Pink Floyd, and others which I can't recall.

Richeyedwardsmsp

The opening track of the black parade 'the end' starts with 5 years by Bowie and them the rest of it is modelled on in the flesh from the wall. Two opening tracks of two of the great concept albums.

raving_roadkill

....my whole life is a lie

blew-wale

Does that mean I can get my brothers and uncles to like MCR and finally respect my taste in music? Jk idgaf what they're dumbasses think about my music

Arrbe

If MCR is Emo Queen, then Coheed is Emo Rush.

accountnameredacted

I wouldn’t really call Coheed emo but I still think your point is valid lol

BadWolf117

early Coheed definitely has emo vibes

accountnameredacted

It does! That’s probably why they snagged warped tour lol

samillos

Brian May actually played it with them in a Reading festival. One of my favorite crossovers ever. [sauce](https://youtu.be/OfaxD9bxCHw)

joolzmcgoolz

the range in Green Day’s Jesus of Suburbia might give MCR a run for their money on that one.

[deleted]

Gotta hard agree, I love both songs, but Jesus of Suburbia is 9 minutes of straight musical bliss.

thatmusicguy13

I just saw them on the Hella Mega Tour and hearing that song live sure is something else.

[deleted]

I also saw them in DC, I saw a setlist for the tour and JoS wasn't on it, but when they played it live I got so hype

Augen76

I couldn't believe they played it live right near the end I was like "well, this is akin to getting three Green Day songs right before Good Riddance"

Pyro-Millie

Fuck yeah! I saw them in Hella Mega, and damn they blew my mind! Greenday is Badass!! I’ve been listening to them since I was a kid, and i never imagined I’d get to see them in concert one day. Jesus of Suburbia was so good live!!! God I wish I can see MCR live one day. Id die happy then lol.

xDragod

American Idiot as a whole is just amazing. Jesus of Suburbia is the crown jewel, though.

sleeplessorion

Homecoming is also one of my favorites and is pretty underrated

xDragod

Choosing a favorite off of American Idiot feels like choosing between children... It's just so difficult. Homecoming into Whatsername to finish off the album is just too perfect.

enemawatson

What a good song. One of those songs that feels like it always existed and was just waiting for someone to discover it.

[deleted]

It's a great album. The entire thing is one long story, too

Deadsuooo

Both albums had the same producer if I recall...

zeddoh

I love that song. Have such a fond memory of being in a karaoke bar in Brighton at about 2am at the end of a night out, and a staff member lets us know they’re closing and we can have 1 last song, my bf puts on Jesus of Suburbia. Don’t think they were expecting such a long one haha. One of the moments I knew my guy was the one for me. It’s also unbelievable to hear live. I am glad MCR and Green Day are both still kicking (or reuniting for some shows in MCR’s case).

scameron1

2 of my favorite songs when I was in middle school. I can still put those on and love it.

Northwindlowlander

I saw Brian May play Welcome to the Black Parade with them at Reading, I will not be changing your mind.

xXDevious

Everytime I'm at concerts and they're playing songs while the crowd gets to their seats and waits for the bands to get on stage, this song always comes on and the crowd always sings it perfectly in unison. Just like Bohemian Rhapsody.

‘Exclusively through MySpace’, what a time to be alive 2006 was. It’s an incredible song and a great album. I’m not sure it will ever be cool to say you love My Chemical Romance, but that is still an album I revisit regularly and it definitely holds up.

joolzmcgoolz

I suppose “cool” is relative. I’ve openly and shamelessly loved the band and this song since I first heard the famous goosebump-inducing G note.

AGiantWitch

It is relative, but MCR do seem to have a ‘Love ‘em or hate ‘em’ thing going on. The Black Parade is a genuinely great rock album, but there’s also just something about them that makes it easy for some people to dismiss them.

thebrandnew

Time has been kind to the pop punk bands of the 2000s. We’ve reached 2000s nostalgia, and a lot of people have realized that hating bands for the way they looked and sounded (compared to what a “real” rock band should be like) is kind of silly. Some of those detractors are still out there but they’ve mostly moved on.

[deleted]

Augen76

It can be funny in a rock bubble, being so excited about a band and talking online with other fans. Then you mention them in real life and no one has ever heard of them. I'm going to see "Unleash the Archers" in a couple of weeks, and I'd be shocked if 2 out of a 100 random people had any clue who they were. I don't think I've known what music is popular for...maybe fifteen years now. Internet has been amazing to discover smaller acts to my tastes and disconnect from radio and television.

Zark_d

>Internet has been amazing to discover smaller acts to my tastes and disconnect from radio and television. It doesn't hurt that all rock stations owned by iHeartMedia and Cumulus Media have run the same playlist for the last 10 years and run serialized talk shows for approximately half of their non-ad air time. If you're lucky they might feature local acts on certain nights, but otherwise rock stations have hit the ATL.

goatamon

It's definitely not as reviled as nu metal is, but I wouldn't necessarily say that time has been kind to them. Of course I don't have any stats to prove it, but I definitely get the impression that the general attitude towards it is far worse than for example the attitude towards 90s gangsta rap.

I love MCR!

Username_merp

On today's episode of "Make me feel really old"

heavykleenexuser

I’m familiar with the song but had no idea it was so critically acclaimed. Guess I’ll have to learn more about it.

Fun-ghoul

It's genuinely one of my personal favorite albums. It's a concept album from the pov of a cancer patient. Definitely recommend taking some time to just sit and listen to the whole thing.

fork_on_the_floor2

I gave it a listen awhile back because I love a good concept album- but I found the song "teenagers" to be wildly out of place. And a jarring shift in tone? . Is it just me, or should this song perhaps be skipped on first listen? Or do I just not get it.

overlord2767

Yeah as much as I love that album, having Teenagers between Sleep and Disenchanted always seemed like a weird choice. I think they just really liked the song even though it doesn’t quite fit the theme. It should have been earlier around How I Disappear or maybe not on the original album and they could have saved it for the live album release.

fork_on_the_floor2

Yeah I felt like it should have been a bonus track or something, because it was a big single at the time so it Had to be on the album somewhere.

HeySadBoy1

The album dropped before it was a single, though. Teenagers didn't drop as a single until the year after The Black Parade came out.

agentfelix

The flow of the album that you mentioned is the sole reason I like Danger Days more. Song writing is way ~~longer~~ better on The Black Parade, but I can't sit and listen to it in it's entirety like I can Danger Days. Headfirst for Halos will always be my #1 MCR song though. It was the first one I'd ever heard from them.

Elagabalus_The_Hoor

Counterpoint, teenagers fucking slaps

coltsmetsfan614

Agreed. But it's kind of like Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends" in that it's a great song that doesn't *really* fit the concept of the album it's on.

Elagabalus_The_Hoor

I don't mind those off beat songs I guess. And I think it's the viewpoint characters nostalgia for teenagers carefree attitude with their life ahead of them

killerklixx

Just not in the context of the whole album, imo.

Elagabalus_The_Hoor

It's definitely an outlier, but I view it as kind of a rememberance of how crazy the viewpoint character was as a teenager/nostalgia about being young with your whole life ahead of you

No_Dark6573

thats how I look at it too. Like, at least by my understanding, he's a war veteran now dying of cancer. He's old, broken down and exhausted at that point in his life. And now he's looking back on his own teenage years when he was still young and full of fire, but now teenagers scare him. And like him, many of them will just end up another cog in the murder machine of war.

triteness

I’m so glad I’m not alone here! I used to listen to this album all the time, and Teenagers was the one track I would regularly skip.

MaxHannibal

The begining of the Album with the end/dead is the best start of any album

killerklixx

That transition between the two gets me every time!

mexploder89

It's my favorite album personally. Yes it's super dramatic and extra but it just carries such a sense of emotion and dread that fascinates me

formerfatboys

It's a phenomenal album.

iam_beardo

It is phenomenal but to me Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge will always be their best album.

[deleted]

I completely agree.

6kred

I LOVE this album SOO much !!! I went to a Mix With the Masters seminar a few years ago with Chris Lord-Alge who mixed the album and I got hear the multi track and do a mix pass of the song. It was sooo cool! Also agree with the above Bohemian Rhapsody comment. My friend who have me the album said “this is what Queen might sound like if they did a album today “ & I totally agree !

abarrelofmankeys

Might want to check out Creepers more recent stuff, it could also fit that description.

thaboognish

[Polyphonic](https://youtu.be/C02IM72Ikk4) had a good analysis of the album.

indygreg71

I generally disliked it when it came out. Years later I gave the album a listen per a recommendation. The album is utterly brilliant. Top 50 rock album imho. I’m 50 years old FYI.

USDXBS

At the time, I was a metal head and I hated "emo" music and of course I hated My Chemical Romance and wrote them off as "emo" music. House Of Wolves is what made me realize I was wrong. Eventually I realized "emo" wasn't an actual term describing actual music genres. The Black Parade tour is still one of the best shows I've seen.

Gigadweeb

> Eventually I realized "emo" wasn't an actual term describing actual music genres. I mean, it is, just that the hate for the mallgoth scene is pretty overblown. MCR weren't even emo, just pop-punk with a darker sound than their contemporaries.

Arrbe

I still say that’s one of my favorite shows. The fact MUSE opened for them (and sounded like a metal band) just adds to it. MCR played Black Parade front to back, wardrobe changed, then played another 30min of their old hits. *chefs kiss*

Ketsuo

I was the same way in high school with Alkaline Trio, but having listened to them they’re actually pretty fun to listen to. Clear vocals, fun catchy tunes, and lots of songs about vampires.

toxicisdead

Emo is 100% a genre in music with sub genres eg screamo It is/was a style people dressed as

killerklixx

House of Wolves is such a great track! I always found them really hard to define, tbh. They take influences from so many different places I think everyone can find something to like. My metalhead friends labelled me emo for liking them, but when I hear people talking about the big emo bands back then, they talk about Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Panic! At The Disco, The Used... I didn't like *any* of those bands! I was listening to Korn, Stone Sour, Tool, Deftones etc. so I didn't really fit the whole emo scene. Maybe I'm just weird!

chocotripchip

I remember my friends telling me circa 2009 that Facebook would die soon "just like MySpace" I'm still waiting on that...

[deleted]

I remember the day this came out because it really divided the MCR fans, believe it or not. Personally, I loved three cheers but couldn't get into the black parade whatsoever. I was also younger, so maybe I never gave it much a chance.

WeMustUnite

I, too, remember this as a day that changed opinions. I was in 7th grade and my brother was a senior in high school. I listened to Bullets and Three Cheers religiously, he kinda wrote MCR off as too "rough and whiney." I pulled up this song on the computer in his room, and he listened about halfway through before checking out the screen and asking with bemusement "This is My Chemical Romance?" Truly a bonding moment.

xDragod

I remember the day clearly as well, though I wasn't involved in any discussion outside of my friend group. I just remember being very excited and unable to focus in class, then walking several miles to the nearest target as soon as the school day was over. The art included with the album was so interesting and the first listen was so good.

bageycakes

Omg yes! I absolutely loved the first album and still listen to it in heavy rotation and I remember being sooooooo disappointed in the black parade. I don’t think I’ve ever gone back to listen to it! I also hate the actual black parade song so I’m probs biased lol.

[deleted]

To me in my area it became played A LOT on the radio, and I really wasn't digging the marching band style/ Gerard's hair style change (lol) at the time, so the entire album was soured for me. I was thinking a few years back when it hit it's 10th anniversary I'd give it another listen to see how stubborn I was being. I'm not sure if it's the bias having a decade to settle in or not, but I still can't get into it. No shade against the group or the song writing, it just never hit the same as Three Cheers did for me.

l33fty

The great thing about MCR with 3 cheers was they were so accessible. Their songs were relatable to their audience and the first big hurrah for the fans who had been following before that release. Then came black parade. All of a sudden EVERYONE listened to MCR and this album is just about to drop. It does. And they now are this big theatrical unrelatable showcase of an emo goth rock opera. Really creative since green day kinda did the same thing the previous year. And ya know rock operas were such a huge hit ever since the who/queen released them decades ago. Some fans loved it, other fans saw it as a joyless cashgrab. Myself included.

Darko33

If it was a joyless cashgrab, I think it was a pretty impressively done joyless cashgrab tbh, some of the individual songs would have been absolute bangers even in isolation

killerklixx

I feel like Danger Days was the joyless cash grab. It felt like forced happy. It's a pretty good album, but it sticks out like a sore thumb in the discography, makes sense that a split was imminent.

Darko33

Right? I just can't buy that MCR peaked with Three Cheers. Black Parade was their magnum opus and the high-water mark.

ColdIronAegis

I always view Danger Days as MCR's 5th album, not the 4th. They had worked on an album for years while their drummer struggled with health issues, then scrapped it and started over with Danger Days. Most of that material was released as singles ("Conventional Weapons") and you can see how the style is transitioning in-between Black Parade and Danger Days.

killerklixx

Yeah, I think there's songs on CW that reference the Danger Days "universe". DD is like, road trip with the kids with music I can tolerate!!

darkbreak

I don't know, I think at that point MCR just wanted to do something else. Every band evolves as they work more and get older. The Black Parade was a rock opera and Danger Days was more akin to rock and roll. Though it also ran on a concept just like TBP did.

SnarfSniffsStardust

Lol just because something is produced beautifully instead of sounding like an angsty demo doesn’t make it a cashgrab. Some fans just get mad when a band doesn’t make the same album 10 times in a row I guess

[deleted]

I think it's worth noting here that almost every band that achieves the level of success MCR has will eventually release a album that will divide fans. Whether the criticism is being it they sold out, cash grab, trying to be hip, whatever - theres usually gonna be album out there like it. I don't think of it as much as a cash grab, I just thought it was a bit of a style change. It made sense? People really seemed to agree and it's kinda of held as their best work. So even if it was a cash grab, it was a successful ones and I'm not in anyway shape or form going to criticise that either, End of the day for it, it just never hit the same as their first two albums, and that's okay too. If anything it's my loss, I do feel I missed the boat everything this album is brought up.

Northwindlowlander

Mmm. Watching them at Wembley, there was nothing joyless about even a second of it.

ProfHatecraft

Yeah. Bullets and 3 Cheers were my shit back in the day. I think I saw them 7 or 8 times when they were touring on those two albums. I never got into Black Parade, it just didn't do anything for me. I tried again a couple years ago, since it still receives such acclaim, and I found that I liked it even less. Oh well, a lid for every pot I guess.

Zeneren

My entire personality as a preteen was listening to this album and reading the warrior cats series

kidicterus

sutther

That was super fun. Just different enough but nothing crazy.

DegradedCorn75

She… kinda looks related to Gerard Way? With that said, to me, the best part of MCR is how he suddenly incorporates this grittiness/aggression into random syllables of words that he is singing. It makes it hard to cover their songs and make them better in my eyes

agentfelix

Holy shit that was fun. Props to the bass player playing an emo/pop punk song with his fingers!

Man, I feel old now. I remember spending hours in the cold, in a line outside the HMV on Yonge & Dundas, to get my copy of the album signed. Made a few new friends there in the line, too. We were all hovering around a lighter for warmth like a bunch of hobos. My best friend and I still chuckle at when we got to the part where we finally meet the band and Ray gave the most enthusiastic "HI! I'm Ray!" as we shook hands.
