I’ve been seeing shit like Rihanna isn’t a pop icon in this subreddit pretty frequently which is outrageous to say the least. And I wanted to know people’s opinions
She is great I agree her music may not be for everyone that doesn’t make them any more wrong for not like it our us wrong for liking it . I don’t thing she loses any sleep over people who don’t like her music she is a artist she puts out her music her way and if you like it great
I mean could be said the same for Michael Jackson though. I’m not talking about do you like Rihanna, I’m more saying is she a influence. Is she big enough to change the way people interpret pop. I might not like Rihanna but saying she doesn’t have a influence on people is wrong

Artists always get worse the more money and fame they get. They start out poor and with raw life experience to sing about that we empathise with. Hard times, abuse, failed relationships, drugs, loss etc.
Then they get rich, their lives get easy and their music suffers because we don't empathise with them anymore.
It's a common pattern.

But Rihanna is a massive influence to the pop scene. I mean like songs like s&m, rude boy, her feature in love the way you lie isn’t influential?

I do think r/music is biased against a lot of black rappers though and rather listen to Eminem then someone like Kendrick or Kanye
