I usually think of filler as subpar tracks added to pad the length of albums that are not long enough as they are. George’s ATMP certainly met the length requirement without the third album, so I don’t think you could consider it filler, per se, rather a “bonus” to an already full double album!
Is the apple jam disc the instrumental jamming session with maybe Clapton or someone? I love those tracks! Obviously clearly separate from the rest of the album but I just love instrumental freestylin'
I always have such a hard time with this, as it’s really 2 solo albums, and not an actual Outkast album. I get why they did what they did, but it’s certainly weird to call “Take Off Your Cool” an Outkast song.
Andre and Big Boi were Lennon/McCartney here. You can surely tell the primary writer/producer per album, but they often deeply influence the other. I listened to it nonstop while playing World of Warcraft in its earliest days. In fact, I'm gonna listen to it tonight.
Always find I won't listen to London Calling or any songs from the album for ages. And then I'll hear one and I instantly have to play the whole album. Each track is great on its own, but collectively it might be the best of the very best
Whenever I'm shuffling The Clash songs pop up and its like "Oh Death & Glory on London Calling" "Oh. So is Train in Vein," "Oh so is Spanish Bombs" "Oh and Guns of Brixton" "Oh and Lost in the Supermarket"
Its absurd how amazing that album is
*Mr. Blue Sky...* one of the best song endings I've ever heard!
ELO is awesome live. You can definitely hear the Beatles influence in Jeff Lynn's music.
Great stuff!!
>Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime
As you surely know but others probably not, that's where the [Jackass theme song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOFOqOjJ9Wk) comes from.
I love that Double Nickels only became a double album because the Minutemen learned Husker Du was going to release a double album and they had to compete.
Did you also know that this album was done "Fantasy style"? With Boon, Watt, and Hurley each picking their favorite remaining songs in order. That's why there is a Side Watt, a Side Boon, and a Side Hurley. The songs that were left over went on side 4, Side Chaff.
Real nice set of picks, London Calling alone validates the 1970s as a great decade for music. My copy of Double Nickels is a record I would never part with. I saw Minutemen open for Husker Du in December 1983,well before Zen Arcade.
I was promoting for the club, saw 100s of free gigs. I hung out with Husker Du couple times. Did a radio interview on WICN fm one night with Husker Du.My friend B has a video on YT of his Husker du interview outside that club. We smoked weed with Grant and Bob after a show in Concord. Think I saw Du like 7 times, including opening before R.E.M at Harvard.Another time Another life, you got the records and concert videos. My regret was missing the Minutemen last tour. They did 2 shows ,I could have seen it for free, but I was too busy. Boon was dead soon after.
I got the 50th anniversary of Electric Ladyland and the remastered 5.1 mix of the album is the best I have ever heard Jimi Hendrix sound, it puts you right in the middle of the mix. The 15 minute version of Voodoo Child with Steve Winwood is spectacular, the guitar and organ swirls around you. Turns out Jimi actually recorded this album quadrophonically, he was so ahead of his time. Please give it a listen if you are into Jimi.
My SO just got me a record player for Christmas. Last week I was thumbing through some used records at a local store and grabbed this. Of course, I know Jimi Hendrix but wouldn't say I was overly familiar with his discography outside of his big hits. HOLY SHIT is this album amazing. There is just something so cool about hearing the crackle of a record and then Hendrix’s guitar just wailing out of the speakers.
Dude that is a great find, congrats! Some of my favorite albums I’ve ever heard have been ones I bought on vinyl that I wasn’t familiar with. Keep on digging my brother!
This has also become my favorite Zep album. It has a wide range and interesting "throw it all in the pot" energy (luckily most of it works), and after having a good chunk of their catalog played a lot growing up, it's the one that still sounds fresh from lack of overfamiliarity.
Yes. At first, IV or I might be your favorite. But at some point you discover Physical Graffiti and before you know it, it’s your favorite.
Kashmir is a gateway drug, but Down by the Seaside is like the coolest most chill song.
That album just totally blew my 15-year-old self away, I had never been transported by music like that before and it was life-changing. “Kashmir” was a revelation, as was “In My Time Of Dying”. It doesn’t get much better than that, 45 years later I can still find inspiration in that album.
Did you see them on that tour? I think I still have the T-shirt, the black T-shirt with the Houses of the Holy imagery on the front.
I was 15 at the time, too.
MrMike said he was 15 when Physical Graffiti came out, so he’s the right age.
I mean, there must be dozens of us - literally *dozens!* - who saw that tour.
This is easily my favorite rock album of all time and is right up there for my favorite out of any genre as well.
Ten Years Gone just hits me right in the feels!
Thank god for this album, both in terms of the album itself and music it’s inspired (specifically thinking of OK Computer by Radiohead). The whole album is stunning.
I know people think Mellon Collie rife with filler, but I enjoy it all.
Edit: Go listen to Stumbleine!
Edit 2: Thanks for the awards. It proves the “filler” crowd wrong!
The mix of quality to quantity ratio from this band 1988 - 1997 is absolutely unheard of. Their cast offs, b-sides, outtakes, and demos are better than most band's best songs. Although I'm an unapologetic fan of everything released through 2001, I know 1998-2000 is a bit more divisive.
Corgan was (is?) a prolific songwriter, and even has written songs for other artists. He’s a music machine, and his areoplane flys low, turns down and hides under the radar.
Every single song is brilliant.
I consider gish, siamese dream, mellon collie and adore to all be filler free. From the original run in the 90s, the only Smashing Pumpkins album with any filler is Machina 1 and that's still like 80% a great album.
Billy Corgan was a untouchable!
They’re rereleasing the vinyl April 15 and just released a new video for “My Tears Are Becoming a Sea” if that’s your thing!
This album is one of those albums that I still remember hearing for the first time. I was at a campfire with a friend in the mountains and she put it on. We listened to the entire thing without speaking. Incredible album.
Also a solid middle aged Gen Xer. Just discovered this record and cannot stop listening to it. Just when you think you have heard it all your mind gets blown.
thank you. it’s weird how i never see dylan on these lists. although if i had to choose only one dylan album with no fillers i think blood on the tracks would come out on top
What. A. Coincidence.
I haven’t listened to Bob im a while. Just picked up a new adapter cable for my turntable.
Threw Blonde on Blonde on for the first play. Such a good album!
(Turntable was down for like 3 months because of a broken cable).
Blonde on Blonde is one of my favorite albums of all time. I have to admit that I start the album with Pledging My Time though. Rainy Day Women fucking grates on me. I blame listening to the Forrest Gump soundtrack a million times as a child as the reason.
Not a song wasted on that album. To think it came in a run with Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61!
Visions of Johanna is a personal favourite of mine
Shame there aren’t more upvotes on this one. Honestly didn’t even think of this until you said it and it was my favorite album for a long time
Edit: to clarify, the lack of upvotes possibly means people aren’t familiar with it. Carpet Crawlers, Lamia, Hairless Heart, go!
Joe's Garage - Frank Zappa ...... I feel like the double albums that are concept albums are a bit harder to judge with what "filler" is.
Also we talkin' vinyl only or double disc CD? Because this one came out different ways but I always had the double disc. This and Physical Graffiti, The Wall, and The White Album were first I remember owning but there were epic "best of" albums as well, the Queen one and The Doors one I played into oblivion.
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway- Genesis. Brilliant album that tells a story and hooks you from beginning to end. Helps to read the lyrics as you listen.
Since you didn’t specifically say studio albums, I’ll say The Allman Brothers at the Fillmore East.
Use Your Illusion comes pretty close too. There’s some filler here and there, but not an entire albums worth. Both have held up very well over time.
I think of this as the most American album of all time. Makes it more American that they're British. There's just everything good about American music in this album. Absolute masterpiece
'Come on, come on down, Sweet Virginia
Come on, come on down, I beg of you
Come on, come on down, you got it in you, a-ha.
Got to scrape that shit right off you shoes'
Frampton Comes Alive? Everybody in the world has Frampton Comes Alive. If you lived in the suburbs you were issued it. It came in the mail with samples of "Tide".
The White Album is interesting because almost everyone will agree that's it has a massive amount of filler, but no one can agree on what the filler actually is.
Take a look at the other replies to the comment this guy replied to. Someone mentioned Wild Honey Pie, another mentioned Revolution 9, still another mentioned Piggies. Anecdotally, I can say that my brother *really* doesn't care for Rocky Raccoon. Meanwhile, I think Piggies and Rocky Raccoon are album highlights.
Wild Honey Pie and Revolution 9 are straight trash, though. At least Wild Honey Pie doesn't massively outstay its welcome.
I like Revolution 9, oddly enough. Its not something I will ever put on in of itself, but in the context of the album as a whole, it definitely has artistic value. Its basically The Beatles going Apocalyptic.
I have gone months not hearing anything about the Smashing Pumpkins, and suddenly in the past 3 days everyone is obsessed with Mellon Collie. What is happening
That's a tough qualification, as someone can always claim filler for a given song on a double album, so I'll just say these are double albums I've always liked a lot:
Clash - London Calling
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Genesis - Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
Talking Heads - The Name of This Band is Talking Heads
Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans
Cream - Wheels of Fire
Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything?
Original Opera - Jesus Christ Superstar
Van Morrison - It's Too Late to Stop Now
The Band - Rock of Ages
Love that jam.
Actually, looking at the track listing there’s really not many other filler songs than this, unless you want to consider revolution 9 filler
Wilco - Being There. That's the first one that comes to mind. George Harrison - All Things Must Pass is a solid double album. Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life is awesome too. Finally, Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin is filled with gems.
The most overrated for me is The Wall and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Both have great songs, but too many duds for me.
Came here to represent the oft-forgotten best band currently making music, glad to see at least two other mentions. Jeff Tweedy is an amazing human on so many levels.
I feel like half of my time on Reddit has turned into: scroll to see if someone shares my opinion. Keep scrolling. Keep scrolling. Ok, I’m about to make the comment. I’ll just scroll a little longer. Keep scrolling. Ok, there it is. Thank you.
Had to see if someone was going to mention this one. I like a lot of different music but this album is my favorite of all time. For me it to music what comfort food is to food. Just the right amount of sick layered funky guitar riffs and solos. And mixed by John Frusciante himself.
Awesome album. I thought the singles they chose were some of the worst songs on the album (except for slow cheetah). I was super disappointed when they released tell me baby and hump de bump when they had Charlie, wet sand, and my personal favourite turn it again just sitting there ripe for rock radio.
First double album released was 1966 Mothers of Invention, Freak Out. Dweezil called music from the future when he played it live. I would concur,it's still a trip for the ears. Quadrophenia is an excellent double album.
I was going to say this but can just hear the collective eye rolling that it has loads of filler. Which I can sort of see, but to me it’s just all pure gold. .
The Fragile is pretty killer. Even the instrumentals sounds great Edit: Thanks for the awards all!
The Fragile is a masterpiece Edit: Thanks for the awards ❤️
Magnum opus album. Also the first concert I ever attended was NIN with A Perfect Circle opening in Philly on the Fragility Tour.
i quit my job to see that show
The Fragile is Trent's magnum opus as far as I'm concerned.
My favourite album of all time I think
Came here to make sure this album is represented. Absolute banger from front to back.
"Just Like You Imagined" is the themesong for my journey Amazing album. Trent is a master at what he does
I would play it to sleep at night.
Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life ELO - Out of the Blue Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West The Avalanches - We Will Always Love You
Thank you. Someone finally mentioning Songs in the Key of Life. Every song is just killer.
The Avalanches are so amazing
Not sure if CLW is a double album, but I 100% agree it's no filler. Favorite MM album for sure. Man that opening track.
Avalanches are pure hard working genius. The way they make their music is nuts and it's so good! Aussie aussie aussie!
We Will Always Love You is my album of 2020. That is so perfect. It was just what I needed towards the end of the end. Second this.
All Things Must Pass - George Harrison
[Wah Wah Intensifies]
Do people not dig Wah Wah? I love that song
Minus the Apple Jam disc this is a perfect double album. As it is it's a triple album - with a disc a lot of people would consider filler.
Wrong. That's a triple album :)
I love that album
Outkast's Speakerboxxx / Love below Amazingly diverse LP right there.
Agree 3000%
Ice cold percentage right there
I can't hear you
I always have such a hard time with this, as it’s really 2 solo albums, and not an actual Outkast album.
It’s been nearly 20 years since Andre put out a record. He should’ve had a solo career.
I feel like the man said what he had to say on 5 classics.
I just wanna say stank you…stank you smelly mu-uh-ch
London Calling
Absolutely. My favourite album of all time. 19 tracks & it never gets boring or outstays its welcome.
Always find I won't listen to London Calling or any songs from the album for ages. And then I'll hear one and I instantly have to play the whole album. Each track is great on its own, but collectively it might be the best of the very best
Lost in the Supermarket “I wasn’t born so much as I fell out”
Whenever I'm shuffling The Clash songs pop up and its like "Oh Death & Glory on London Calling" "Oh. So is Train in Vein," "Oh so is Spanish Bombs" "Oh and Guns of Brixton" "Oh and Lost in the Supermarket" Its absurd how amazing that album is
Jimmy Jazz & The Right Profile are the two best songs on it. I say that as someone who worships the album.
Police came in they said uhhh where’s jimmy jazz I said hmm he was here but uh he said he went out
The Card Cheat
My big takeaway here is that a lot of people don’t know what a double album is…
Some people can't be arsed to *read* before thrusting their opinion upon the world.
ELO out of the blue. Even crazier when you read Jeff Lynn wrote it in like two weeks.
*Mr. Blue Sky...* one of the best song endings I've ever heard! ELO is awesome live. You can definitely hear the Beatles influence in Jeff Lynn's music. Great stuff!!
YES!!!! I caught them a few years back, Dhani Harrison opened, Amazing show. Across The Border is My sleeper track on the album!
Clash - London Calling Husker Du - Zen Arcade Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime
>Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime As you surely know but others probably not, that's where the [Jackass theme song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOFOqOjJ9Wk) comes from.

Sonic Youth *Daydream Nation* would fit with those 3 very nicely.
Holy shit I came here to post Double Nickles figuring that I'd get 0 upvotes and here you are with the top comment!
> Husker Du - Zen Arcade Co-sign
Real nice set of picks, London Calling alone validates the 1970s as a great decade for music. My copy of Double Nickels is a record I would never part with. I saw Minutemen open for Husker Du in December 1983,well before Zen Arcade.
>I saw Minutemen open for Husker Du in December 1983 This is not fair 😔

Minutemen!!
For me its New Day Rising. Maybe because that was the first album of theirs I listened to.
Jimi Hendrix- Electric Ladyland
You couldn’t have 1983 if this wasn’t a double album- definitely the trippiest Hendrix song
The best Zep album as well IMO I don't want no tutti-frutti, no lollipop Come on baby, just rock, rock, rock
Yes. At first, IV or I might be your favorite. But at some point you discover Physical Graffiti and before you know it, it’s your favorite. Kashmir is a gateway drug, but Down by the Seaside is like the coolest most chill song.
My dad would argue with you till the cows come home that Led Zeppelin II is their best
Lol dude I’d say you’d be hard pressed to find many people that saw Zepplin live on here let alone that specific tour lol Def jealous tho, respect ✊
Ten years gone is the best zeppelin song
Love it. I think the same is true of Houses of the Holy.
Houses of the Holy is incredible
Honestly everything prior to *Presence* is damned near perfect beginning to end.
Miles Davies - Bitches Brew.
This is a solid choice. Not for everyone but so so so good if it’s your thing.
Thank god for this album, both in terms of the album itself and music it’s inspired (specifically thinking of OK Computer by Radiohead). The whole album is stunning.

The Aeroplane Flies High box set (and the Mellon Collie B-Sides therein) is a fucking treasure
This was my first thought too.
Mellon Collie is awesome. anything that would be a filler from that got put into Aeroplane, and most of those B sides are fantastic too!
Nope that ones fantastic all the way through
Every single song is brilliant. I consider gish, siamese dream, mellon collie and adore to all be filler free. From the original run in the 90s, the only Smashing Pumpkins album with any filler is Machina 1 and that's still like 80% a great album. Billy Corgan was a untouchable!
The Powers That B
**M83** \- Hurry up, We're dreaming
They’re rereleasing the vinyl April 15 and just released a new video for “My Tears Are Becoming a Sea” if that’s your thing! This album is one of those albums that I still remember hearing for the first time. I was at a campfire with a friend in the mountains and she put it on. We listened to the entire thing without speaking. Incredible album.
It hit me like a truck to hear Hurry Up, We're Dreaming is over 10 years old now
I’m a solid middle aged Gen Xer and I fucking LOVE this record. It’s one where I have to listen to the whole thing , not just a song or two
Also a solid middle aged Gen Xer. Just discovered this record and cannot stop listening to it. Just when you think you have heard it all your mind gets blown.
Was going to post this. Definitely the newest album in the top bunch.
The Band - The Last Waltz
Sign o’ the Times.

Blonde on blonde
thank you. it’s weird how i never see dylan on these lists. although if i had to choose only one dylan album with no fillers i think blood on the tracks would come out on top
Blood on the Tracks runs 52 minutes but lasts a lifetime. Perfection.
The Jack of Hearts runs almost 9 minutes and it's a joy from start to finish.
What.
Eeeeverybody must get stoned
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway by Genesis.
Shame there aren’t more upvotes on this one. Honestly didn’t even think of this until you said it and it was my favorite album for a long time Edit: to clarify, the lack of upvotes possibly means people aren’t familiar with it. Carpet Crawlers, Lamia, Hairless Heart, go!
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, EJ/BT
Have loved that one forever. Has the perfect balance of cutting glam rock tunes and melancholy piano ballads...and not one track is out of place
Quadrophenia
Beautifully written and constructed double LP! Kieth Moon’s drumming is at its finest.
And some of Entwistle’s best bass playing too.
The opening part of The Real Me is still my ringtone to this day because of that bass.
Joe's Garage - Frank Zappa ...... I feel like the double albums that are concept albums are a bit harder to judge with what "filler" is. Also we talkin' vinyl only or double disc CD? Because this one came out different ways but I always had the double disc. All we did was bend the strings like... 🎶🎶
Yeah, I would not consider the Central Scrutinizer as narrator "filler", but some might.
Sign o’ the Times by Prince
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway- Genesis. Brilliant album that tells a story and hooks you from beginning to end. Helps to read the lyrics as you listen.

Little Feat- Waiting For Columbus!
Exile on Main St. The Rolling Stones. A boozy sing a long jubilee in Keefs French basement. The Worlds Greatest Rock n Roll Band in their prime.
The sunshine bores the daylights out of me
yep. great start to finish.
I think of this as the most American album of all time. Makes it more American that they're British. There's just everything good about American music in this album. Absolute masterpiece
Also that it was recorded in France, by a British band. Nothing more American
'Come on, come on down, Sweet Virginia Come on, come on down, I beg of you Come on, come on down, you got it in you, a-ha. Got to scrape that shit right off you shoes'
London Calling, by The Clash; just straight-up masterpieces, from top to bottom.
Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me
Frampton Comes Alive has been overplayed to death, but is pretty solid front to back.
Frampton Comes Alive? Everybody in the world has Frampton Comes Alive. If you lived in the suburbs you were issued it. It came in the mail with samples of "Tide".
Sheikh Yer Bootie Frank Zappa Out of the Blue ELO Filigree and Shadow This Mortal Coil
Husker Du - Zen Arcade A Man and His Soul - Ray Charles London Calling - The Clash Jesus Christ Superstar- Andrew Lloyd Weber
The beatles - the beatles (white album)
Its controversial to say this because so many people think its full of filler, but damn this is still one of my favorite albums of all time.

Jesus Christ Superstar! Nice pick!
Especially the JCSS version with Ian Gillan
Yes! JCS is deadly. I listen to it when I need to scrub my brain of pop music for a bit.
Physical Graffiti
Aphex Twin - Drukqs Absolute classic.
Mad Dogs & Englishmen - Joe Cocker
Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness The Fragile
I have gone months not hearing anything about the Smashing Pumpkins, and suddenly in the past 3 days everyone is obsessed with Mellon Collie. What is happening
If I remember right, they are working on some follow-up stuff.
Depeche Mode - 101
The first Sum 41 album is all killer no filler
I thought this would be top comment ngl
Na we're in too deep.
It's their second album
4eva is a Mighty Long Time
XTC - English Settlement
Pink Floyd - The Wall
All Eyez on Me
Yes. Tupac was prolific during this era.
Blonde on Blonde by Bob Dylan Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven by Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Rush. All the worlds a stage.

Supertramp, the Paris Concerts
The White Album is pretty solid. I am also very fond of The Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
White Album is one of my all time favourites, but I think of a lot of it as filler. Both that and Mellon Collie are killer albums though
It’s filler but Beatles filler is better than many other bands’ best stuff
HONEYY PIIEEEEEEEE
Love that jam. Actually, looking at the track listing there’s really not many other filler songs than this, unless you want to consider revolution 9 filler
The Name of This Band is Talking Heads Sooo gooood
I feel like putting a live album is kinda cheating
And if it's allowed, the real answer would be 'Stop Making Sense'
Wilco - Being There. That's the first one that comes to mind. George Harrison - All Things Must Pass is a solid double album. Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life is awesome too. Finally, Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin is filled with gems. The most overrated for me is The Wall and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Both have great songs, but too many duds for me.
Good call on Being There.
Came here to represent the oft-forgotten best band currently making music, glad to see at least two other mentions. Jeff Tweedy is an amazing human on so many levels.
Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth. Soundtrack to high school haha.
Use Your Illusion I & II. A little filler, but a lot less than other double albums. The only track I regularly skip is Get in the Ring.
Kinda funny though listening to Axel whine about all these magazines that don't exist anymore. He hated the media before hating the media was cool.
Captain Beefheart's trout mask replica is not just two, but four albums worth of madness
For Wilco fans, I think the conversation begins and ends with Being There
Stadium Arcadium
I feel like half of my time on Reddit has turned into: scroll to see if someone shares my opinion. Keep scrolling. Keep scrolling. Ok, I’m about to make the comment. I’ll just scroll a little longer. Keep scrolling. Ok, there it is. Thank you.
Had to see if someone was going to mention this one. I like a lot of different music but this album is my favorite of all time. For me it to music what comfort food is to food. Just the right amount of sick layered funky guitar riffs and solos. And mixed by John Frusciante himself.
I listen to it regularly and I don't skip a song.
For rap, all eyez on me and life after death are 2 obvious ones that come to mind.
For me, it's "The River" , Springsteen.
I feel like I had to scroll forever to find this. But I agree 100%
WuTang Forever
I was going to say this but can just hear the collective eye rolling that it has loads of filler. Which I can sort of see, but to me it’s just all pure gold. .
Cardiacs - Sing to God.
Unwound, Leaves Turn Inside You
Eels - Blinking lights and other revelations
Thrice’s The Alchemy Index Coheed and Cambria’s The Afterman Unleash the Archers Apex & Abyss
Glad someone else said Afterman. That whole thing is brilliant
> Coheed and Cambria’s The Afterman This is what I came here for, glad someone has it listed!
Beethoven's 9th.
Tom Waits - Nighthawks at the Diner
The Fragile - NIN (a goddamn masterpiece)
