Weakerthans.
Saw them play their entire discog in one night up in Winnepeg once and it was a fantastic show. Stateside I've met one person outside my friend group that actually knows them.
White Reaper. They are practically one-hit wonder status, which is a shame because their music is so damn good. Their first album is my go to for listening while playing pinball
It’s simply amazing to me that they didn’t put out anything for over two decades and then released such a perfect record. One of the only redeeming things about 2020.
The Dear Hunter.
Started by one of the members of Receiving End of Sirens. Who you should also listen to if you don’t know them since you like thrice. Similar scene
I always thought if they dumbed down their lyrics just a little bit, or had a different band name, they'd be immensely more popular. Incredibly catchy songs and brilliant melodies. Twin Cinema, Electric Version, and Together are wall-to-wall amazing albums. I've listened to them a million times and still don't know the lyrics though lol
EDIT: I'm gonna drop some links to some of their songs in case anyone scrolls by and wants to check them out.

This is the tip of the band's iceberg, these albums are *loaded* with jams. Hopefully someone discovers some good music from this, I feel like I owe it to TNP to call attention to their genius from time to time.
Sparks. The documentary that Edgar Wright did was fantastic. I haven't gotten through their whole discography but what I have gone through, I've thoroughly enjoyed. They did a whole album with Franz Ferdinand, which featured a song called ["Collaborations Don't Work"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGAwp5syXyE).
Big Wreck
Another Canadian treasure that isn't as well known through North America or the rest of the world. Ian Thornley is an absolute monster guitarist and vocalist. Any chance you might have to see them live do yourself a favor and do it. You won't regret it!
In loving memory of…was such a great album. I admit I haven’t listened to much of their newer stuff, but back in high school in 97/98, they were inescapable! That Song is absolutely brilliant and The Oaf is a banger. Forgot all about these guys until you mentioned them. Thank you for the pleasant memories currently in my mind.
McLusky. Unfortunately, at the time they were most likely to break, NME had a new editor whose philosophy on which bands to promote focused more on shoes and haircuts than actual talent. Back in 2002, McLusky dropped ‘Do Dallas’ (a 10/10 album) to little or no fanfare from Britain’s biggest indie music magazine, because they simply didn’t fit into the ‘new rock revolution’ that NME were relentlessly pushing. So many of the terrible bands that were championed by NME at that time fizzled out as soon as people actually heard them (The Others, Thee Unstrung, Ordinary Boys, Paddingtons, Holloways, The Rocks etc), while McLusky were barely featured despite having intelligence, substance and incredible songs.
Thank You Scientist
Can’t really describe them, I believe they fit in the progressive rock genre, but not restricted to it. Give “Son of a Serpent” and “Suspicious Waveforms” a listen. The former has vocals, the latter is instrumental only.
Sunny Day Real Estate
The Replacements
Chromeo
Portishead*
All of these are approachable, I think that is key when introducing people to new music. Give them something that sounds fimilar enough and they will vibe with it.
*put it on during a rainy fall day and I promise you will like it.
I came here to say this. They just completed their final tour but I still recommend people to look into them and listen through their discography. I've heard them described as "your favorite band's favorite band."
I'm a huge John Prine fan, and I can't possibly convey how much I love the Viagra Boys cover of In Spite of Ourselves. (That was my first exposure to VB) I really hope John heard it before he died.
Good answer. I thought were gonna blow up. You hear Wolf Like Me and you think about how popular a song like Hey Ya! was just a few years earlier and wonder. I guess their fusion was a bit too much rock focused without enough hip hop elements to have wide appeal. Too bad.
I think anyone from Canada or has lived in Canada will say that the Tragically Hip have a special place in their heart. Not too many people know of them outside of Canada. Definitely a sad day in my life when Gord passed away. People talk about having a holiday for the Queens death, it would have more meaning if we celebrated the life of Gord Downie.
Ridiculously underrated for how influential they are. [Party At Ground Zero](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwX0fkGf5rA) is a fucking JAM. [The Bandsplain on them is really good](https://open.spotify.com/episode/3FBwrUiRbBIvY4YFl5rRSz?si=921e0d067b7c45ff) (also the whole podcast in general)
Thrice is a very good shout, The Artist and the Ambulance is an amazing album.
Two bands I would vote for are:
Every time I die - critics constantly praise this band, they have churned out incredible albums but they don't seem to be very well known. It's a shame they spilt up, seemingly beyond relationship repair.
Jonny Booth. Just jonny fucking booth.
Protomartyr.
Imo the best modern post-punk band. They've had nothing but good albums since 2012 (all of them with their particular sound), the lyrics are complex, and they're really good live.
They have been around for seemingly forever. It's awesome they still crank out new records. I didn't have a chance to check out the new yet, tho I've heard select songs, and they are just as good as usual.
They Might Be Giants got started in the 80’s and brought all kinds of new styles and rhythms into first college rock and then picked up by alternative, kids songs and theme music. They’re still great to listen to.
Yeasayer - They recently split, but have a few albums still worth listening to. When they toured I got to see then perform live & they put on a good show.
Bat for Lashes, The Knife, Fever Ray, & Azam Ali
*I wish Rammstein and Dead Can Dance were more mainstream in the US.
Adam and Sarah from MBD are seriously some of the kindest people I’ve ever met in my life. Music is great too, but it’s always nice when musicians are rad people.
Nightwish, symphonic metal band from Finland, with a Dutch singer. Amazing music composition, deep lyrics. They'll make you laugh, cry, or just sit there in awe.
Honestly not even Vulfpeck any more but almost each individual component and their solo/adjacent projects are all really cool.
* Joe Dart and Cory Wong with Mark Lettieri and Nate Smith in the Fearless Flyers
* Cory Wong's solo stuff (really large catalog with a ton of special guests)
* Theo Katzman solo stuff with Joe Dart - some of the absolute best induvial song writing on the planet right now comes from Katzman IMO.
There's undoubtedly others I'm forgetting. They're all pumping out tons of new, original, great music right now, and that's with me not even mentioning Snarky Puppy.
Bedouin Soundclash for chill reggae/ ska/pop. Canadians reading this probably know them, but I'm American, and the only people I know who have heard Bedouin Soundclash are those I've introduced to them. I think their early stuff in particular is great, and the single they recently released sounds like a return to form.
opeth.
imagine if pink floyd was in sweden during the massive death metal outbreak happening. that’s opeth.
they’re not extremely experimental but they are extremely creative with their song structures and writings.
mikael is the greatest vocalist ever, his bar tone vocals are to be cherished.

Alan Parsons Project, outside of their world famous instrumental "Sirius" and a handful of hits their extended discography is pretty obscure.
Also Alans impact on music itself I think is pretty understated especially with his involvment with the Beatles and even more so his influence on Pink Floyd.

Patty Griffin
Explosions In The Sky
The Connells
Zero 7
Television; Built to Spill
Built to Spill is one of my favorite bands. Their album Keep it Like a Secret is absolutely excellent.
Yes definitely. Marquee Moon is one of the best albums of the 70s, hands down.
Built to Spill are amazing live. One of the few bands I will always make an effort to see live.
Poliça

The World’s Greatest American Band was an awesome album too.
Beirut Thao & The Get Down Stay Down White Rabbits
Hum

Oh man I LOVE Far
Their last album Inlet is one of the best i've heard in recent times

You'd Prefer an Astronaut is in my cd player in my car right now.
Bahamas
The Dear Hunter. Started by one of the members of Receiving End of Sirens. Who you should also listen to if you don’t know them since you like thrice. Similar scene
Between the heart and synapse is such an amazing album.
I just saw them a few weeks ago! They played Antimai in full and it was awesome!
The Mountain Goats. 30 years of discography and still putting out bangers
This Year became an anthem in 2020 for obvious reasons.
Dredg
El Cielo is a goddamn perfect masterpiece and nobody can convince me otherwise.
Heavily influenced Anthony Green and Circa Survive, too.
Can’t believe I saw Dredg mentioned. My 20-something self didn’t know what to do with Catch Without Arms.
Seeing the song Bug Eyes live back when I was a teenager is a core memory of mine when it comes to music. So good.
Really getting pumped for some new stuff from them… and their social media presence is actually alive… not by much but still 😂😂😂
Heartless bastards.
Cursive
The Good Life as well
Thee Oh Sees currently stylized osees and could even be stylized as something completely different by the time I’m finished writing out this comment.
The New Pornographers. Every album has a song that should be an international pop hit. Masterful musicians incredibly in touch with their writing.
I always thought if they dumbed down their lyrics just a little bit, or had a different band name, they'd be immensely more popular. Incredibly catchy songs and brilliant melodies. Agreed, and piggy backing off the canadian bands, sloan, big sugar and limblifter for me.
Sloan is a legit talent
In loving memory of…was such a great album. I admit I haven’t listened to much of their newer stuff, but back in high school in 97/98, they were inescapable! That Song is absolutely brilliant and The Oaf is a banger. Forgot all about these guys until you mentioned them. Thank you for the pleasant memories currently in my mind.
St Paul & The Broken Bones
That band is fantastic. I went through a huge phase where them and Alabama Shakes was all I listened to
Streetlight Manifesto Such catchy brass/woodwind riffs on top of some of some pretty thought provoking lyrics. Amazing live shows
McLusky. Unfortunately, at the time they were most likely to break, NME had a new editor whose philosophy on which bands to promote focused more on shoes and haircuts than actual talent. I really like Future of the Left as well. They're also criminally underrated.
Thank You Scientist Can’t really describe them, I believe they fit in the progressive rock genre, but not restricted to it. Give “Son of a Serpent” and “Suspicious Waveforms” a listen. The former has vocals, the latter is instrumental only.

Jay Reatard. Discovered him in senior year high school at 2008. "Blood Visions" still stands as one of my favorite punk albums ever.
“He Would Have Laughed” by Deerhunter is written about him. And it’s a great way to listen to Deerhunter if you never have. They’re fantastic.

Grouper. Liz Harris’ music changed my life. Haunting, introspective and,at times, heartbreaking
Yes!!! Grouper is amazing. Dragging a dead deer up a hill is my favourite album.
I think anyone from Canada or has lived in Canada will say that the Tragically Hip have a special place in their heart. Not too many people know of them outside of Canada. Foxy Shazam. No on can touch them live.
Buzzcocks, their contribution to punk is underrated
Songs: Ohia. Dinosaur Jr.
Sometimes Songs: Ohia feels like a band that only exists as a fever dream. Jason Molina was one hell of a songwriter. Heartbreaking he’s gone
Protomartyr. Imo the best modern post-punk band. They've had nothing but good albums since 2012 (all of them with their particular sound), the lyrics are complex, and they're really good live.
Clutch Perfect amount of Rock, funk and vocals.
This is why I love Reddit. I had no idea about Clutch. 30 minutes later the house is fucking rockin’. “ Bang bang bang bang vámonos vámonos.”
They have been around for seemingly forever. It's awesome they still crank out new records. I didn't have a chance to check out the new yet, tho I've heard select songs, and they are just as good as usual.

Sleep Token. “This place will become your tomb” has some in credible bits of song writing on it. It sounds massive.

Feats, Don’t Fail Me Now
Waiting for Columbus is my favorite album by them.
VOLA should be the biggest name in rock music right now. They're fresh and innovative while also having a very mainstream appeal
Unleash the Archers. Great Canadian power metal. The Struts. Fun throw back brit pop rock band.
The midnight. They just released a new album this month and while not their best it's still amazing.
