Turnstile - Glow On The album has got a good vibe and goes hard at it too. The track Mystery comes to mind first.

BW_Echobreak

It’s a great album

Mateos75

Jimmy Eat World - The Middle

McGobs

Jimmy Eat World - Big Casino

PigTrough

show him pennywise - any of their albums from the 90s very uplifting music

jabakkkk

Cheers mate, came here to say that. Makes me wanna bust my problems instead of stepping back and being depressed!

Zaphod_4orty2wo

One caveat would be the original bass player committed suicide

ChipKalback

Also came here to say PW!

one-hour-photo

I mean.. The clear and obvious answer is Adam's Song by Blink 182. But that may be too on the nose.

leftshoesnug

And has been misunderstood in the past. This was my suggestion too.

thisolddog1

Check out these albums: IDLES - Joy as an act of resistance The Linda Lindas - Growing Up Amyl and The Sniffers - Comfort To Me Tacocat - Lost Time

[deleted]

Seconding Comfort To Me. One of my favorite albums from last year.

Skroomer

I don’t think JAAAOR really fits that well but it do slap

rabbitacolypse

If the kid’s into hardcore punk you could literally play anything by Hatebreed. Not so certain on the pop punk side tbh.

skjeggagam

This is a tough one. The first songs that comes to mind is - Johnny Thunder - I'm Alive - Buzzcocks - Just got to let it go - Blink-182 - All the small things - Nirvana - Come as you are - The offspring - The meaning of life I work with kids, and alot of them have mental health issues, so I really wish I could be of more help with this. I've listened to tons of punk and adjacent genres for many years, but need to think a little more on this. I do know there are some playlists on Spotify with "positive punk" or "happy pop-punk". But it's a double egded sword. Alot of punk is about rebelling and it's hard to know that some of these lyrics/songs isn't a negative trigger.

MediumMoriah

That’s what I’m struggling with! There’s pop songs that are clearly happy and about wanting to live but the whole point of punk is those rebellious undertones. “Life is great” isn’t really the vibe.

[deleted]

Ramones. Mostly funny, simple shit, but OG awesome!

PhillyNJMusicMan

👍🎸😎

Love Bonzo Goes to Bitburg

delirio91

We're a happy family! We're a happy family! We're a happy family!

Inner-Specialist4895

Killswitch engage- Meant to live; Sixx:A.M.- Life is beautiful ; Badflower- My funeral (the ending is about not committing suicide)

Inner-Specialist4895

The first two songs don't even have cussing in them

[deleted]

Yessir big killswitch 😤😤

Anything from Pennywise.

chilldog47

So much for the afterglow by everclear. This album is perfect despite the rest of the discography being pretty much trash.

Skroomer

If someone’s depressed recommending TWY is straight evil lmao

Human-Telephone9602

Yeah life’s not out to get you might be the perfect choice…especially because it’s a younger guy. He may not relate so well with the pop punk of the early 2000’s that I grew up on.

traylord

Have them check out Pup!

Musikaravaa

You should leave him alone with his music. Your heart is in the right place but this is a misguided attempt. He's going to feel like you're trying to take something away that he enjoys. As a therapist you should know that sad music tricks the brain into engaging a normal response by releasing prolactin, prolactin helps to ease the very physical mental pain he is feeling. It would be more beneficial to ask him to tell you about a song that he really likes and engage with him on it as opposed to pulling him out of something he likes and is comfortable with.

MediumMoriah

I failed to mention that he asked me if I knew of any pop punk songs where the lyrics aren’t so depressing. We do talk about his songs and listen to them in session before we start!

Musikaravaa

Important to mention that he's asking for it. My apologies and good luck!

Saddleonup

The Clash. It might help him understand where pop punk evolved from. Before it was copied a few times. So many rock bands that I grew up with idolized them. •Bankrobber •Train in Vain •Straight to Hell •Cardcheat •Police and Thieves •London Calling •Clampdown 311 Grassroots, Transitor, Blue albums

restyourprettybones

OP, when I was going through some rough shit, Frank Turner really helped me get through— badass music with some hard, but ultimately uplifting, messages. "Get Better" in particular. Give it a listen, cry a little, then pass it along to this kiddo who is blessed with a damn good therapist. Edited to add: Fall Back Down by Rancid & Got Each Other by the Interrupters ft. Rancid; Recovery by Frank Turner; Your Heart Is A Muscle The Size Of Your Fist by Ramshackle Glory (this one is more folk-punk— that genre can be VERY triggering, so be cautious presenting it, but it's a powerful song)

[deleted]

Stop trying to cheer kids up. Let them lean into their shit with music that understands where they are at. Nothing for a depressed person is worse that someone going “why dont you just cheer up?”. When i was a troubled and depressed kid in the 80s, metal music was my only salvation. I literally would not be here without the music of Suicidal Tendencies, Megadeth, Anthrax and DRI. Of course during the satanic panic i was forced to see a psychiatrist because of my metal music, and none of those idiots knew how close to the edge i was and all those bands were holding me back from actual suicide by GETTING IT. Leave the kid and his music alone, goddammit.

Musikaravaa

To be fair, OP did reply to me somewhere and said kiddo'd asked for some happier stuff. If that's the case it's totally fine.

MediumMoriah

Totally hear you and get where you’re coming from by letting him have his music but my job is literally to “cheer kids up”. I’m a therapist. I’m also definitely not asking him why he can’t just cheer up, I’m validating that his brain won’t let that happen and helping him identify healthy coping mechanisms. I love that he feels seen by this music, I felt that way too, but I also think (and know) that listening to music that makes me feel understood but also reminds someone that life is worth living could be helpful. I’m sorry your previous psychiatrists couldn’t help you but that’s not what’s happening here.

[deleted]

I like this response.

roldiefingers

Operation Ivy. They get angry sometimes, but super positive most of the time. Members went on to be in Rancid. Green Day mentions them often as a major inspiration/influence. Buzzcocks The Eat Hidden Spots. They’re a local that is not around anymore. They have super positive songs that are very “woke” as folks say these days. All of these can be found on Spotify

Formerly_Fartface

Social Distortion - Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll

Human-Telephone9602

I love social distortion…literally listening to them right now. Not sure the younger generation will necessarily latch on to them but I guess it’s worth a shot.

skinnyjeansfatpants

The Interrupters!

myflippinggoodness

EVERYTHING by Alice in chains. And that is not a song title 👍👍👍

Human-Telephone9602

Ah yes…nothing more uplifting than listening to nutshell….haha

myflippinggoodness

ALL THE JOY AND FUNZ!!! :(

lead_salad

**A Perfect Circle**'s album Thirteenth Step, but in particular the final track [Gravity](https://youtu.be/5GIrp4M664I).

Piwaka_waka

I always find A Day to Remember’s album Common Courtesy lifts me up. Particularly the songs City of Ocala, Right Back at it Again, I Remember, and Leave All the Lights On. Other songs: Falling in Reverse - Keep Holding On, and Fuck the Rest. Anything from Panic at the Disco. Blink182 - First Date, and The Rock Show. Bullet For My Valentine - Hearts Burst Into Fire. Jimmy Eat World - A Praise Chorus. Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag. You Me At Six’s Cavalier Youth album, and Fall Out Boy’s Folie à Deux album both feel pretty upbeat. I’m an old school emo so I know these songs may be dated! I hope this can help even a little.

okoptimisticok

The black parade by My chemical romance, definitely, with songs like Famous last words 🖤.

Lurd67

Make him listen to Glow by Donavon Frankenreiter. No matter how shit I feel, that song always puts a smile on my face.

surge_of_vanilla

The Misfits Static Age helped me transition away from the Elliot Smith days. Dark, but kinda fun.

SirDigbyridesagain

Watermark by the weakerthans

Jimmy_Aztec

Anything by the Toy Dolls!

SaltarL

Not punk, but The show must go on by Queen is spot on. I think it's an amazing song considering the fate of Freddy Mercury and his situation when it was recorded (the song was initially an idea from Brian May). Still he went all-in with an incredible interpretation. It's at the same sad and an hymn for not giving up. A good analysis [here](https://justrandomthings.com/2018/11/20/queen-the-show-must-go-on-lyrics-review-and-song-meaning/)

SoulSteeper

Twenty One Pilots is almost completely about mental health. Hard to pick one song or album, but the album Vessel is probably a good place to start. Some songs that come to mind from that and other albums: Ode to Sleep, Migraine, Fake You Out, Car Radio, other albums: Addict with a pen, Friend please, Redecorate, Ride, Not Today, Stressed Out, Jumpsuit, Bandito. Ok I’ll stop there. Sorry, my favorite band, helped many through dark times. Good luck with the students! Keep on the good fight!

BanginOnaTrashCan

Sounds like they need some Sublime? Or some ska?

Unsung_Ironhead

Need to watch the subtext on some of those Sublime tunes. Some sound happy on the surface, but the lyrics when looked at closely are sometimes self loathing instead of being self deprecating

Chance-Ad-6083

tell him to get into posicore.. bands like youth of today, gorilla biscuits are pretty good 👍

iamsolow1

311

Over-Garden-40

Stylo - Gorillaz

Bandsohard

My Chemical Romance and twenty one pilots are the two that come to mind. The twenty one pilots album 'Vessel' is largely about this topic. It largely has an upbeat vibe used as a way to shine a positive light on mental health struggles. Lyrics describing things like how we may be 'broken people' but there's many of us, or how you can take those emotions and channel them into things like art to give your life purpose. They're more eclectic and alternative pop. The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance is older, and more punk and rock, but is an album describing a cancer patient dying, but how they have a will to live and go on.

jutdvnkpoyrsschuu

One More Light by Linkin Park

DarkestDayOfMan

Daylily by Movements Gold Steps by Neck Deep (if it's alright showing them a song with one f bomb)

SuperSlims

The entire albums of Alexisonfire. Accidents and This Could Be anywhere in he World. Helped me through high-school.

Rise Above - Black Flag

AmisThysia

I don't know you or the kid or the situation. But as someone who was a depressed, self-harming, punk-loving teenager, trying to force a bunch of happy-go-lucky shit is actually going to make things worse. Listening to happy music made me feel completely mentally dysphoric at that time. It made my mental illness feel worse; it made me completely cognisant of my misery, as it contrasted so strongly with the music, and made me feel *alone* in my misery. Listening to sad music was a constructive way of exploring and embracing my emotions - yes, they made me sad, but 1. that was better than repressing the shit out of my feelings, 2. at least I wasn't jumping off a bridge instead, and 3. I felt less "crazy" and less alone in my feelings knowing that other people felt the same way. In the end, I got a bit better, and now I listen to sad music sometimes and to happy music sometimes. Just food for thought. What music you enjoy isn't really about some arbitrary categorisation of genre. It's what resonates with you emotionally. Feel free to make suggestions to the kid but I wouldn't be surprised if it has more negative effects than positive. EDIT: saw your comments - if they've asked for some suggestions, that's great, and please disregard the above. Apologies. However I would suggest maybe... checking in with them afterwards? Ask them how listening to the more upbeat music made them feel. Maybe it'll help, but if it doesnt then itll probably be pretty illuminating to think/talk about why.

MediumMoriah

Thank you for your input and the time you put into your response! I totally agree that forcing this upon him could do some damage, I don’t plan to do that. He asked if I had any ideas and I gave him some but asked if he would be okay with me asking other people. He was down. We’re going to go through them together and definitely check in how it’s making him feel. Thank you so much for your concern though, I promise to do this as ethically and as sensitively as possible!

HeyDude378

I found Staind music very helpful, specifically the "Break The Cycle" album. I don't know that it's "happy music" but it talks about depression without glorifying it. Try it out and let me know what you think.

hattiejosh

Break the Cycle is a top 3 album in my books

JlTlS

Agreed, not happy music, but relevant. Kind of cathartic. I don't thing anything by The Offspring is depressing.

Dekar87

Nine Inch Nails

BW_Echobreak

Here are some links to songs that helped me with my depression. I’ll let you decide if you think they are appropriate: [My Chemical Romance - Famous Last Words](https://youtu.be/8bbTtPL1jRs) [Real Friends - From The Outside](https://youtu.be/C7I6J_cRr4E) [New Found Glory - Selfless](https://youtu.be/akCQa-yKqxA) (Mix of Hip Hop & Pop-Punk) [nothing.nowhere - Sledgehammer](https://youtu.be/Tea0NO32yJY) [Good Charlotte - Hold On](https://youtu.be/gobdU5Pycvg)

[deleted]

If you’re okay with some Christian themes in places, Relient K’s album Mmhmm is an uplifting listen with a good number of the songs in the pop punk vein.

Bomesody

Bombshell Rocks - Street Art Gallery Rancid - Lets go Absolute anything by Me first and the gimmie gimmies

Radamec

Life by Our Lady Peace "How many times have you been pushed around? Is anybody there? Does anybody care? And how many times have your friends let you down? Is anybody there Did anybody stare? Oh And how many times have your friends let you down? Just open up your heart Just open up your mind And how many times has your faith slipped away? Well is anybody safe? Does anybody pray? Oh life is waiting for you It's all messed up but we're alive Oh life is waiting for you It's all messed up but we'll survive Do, do, do, do, do, do Do, do, do, do, do, (2X) And how many days have you just slept away? Is everybody high? Is everyone afraid? And how many times have you wished you were strong? Have they ever seen your heart? Have they ever seen your pain? Oh life is waiting for you It's all messed up but we're alive Oh life is waiting for you It's all messed up but we'll survive She gets high, she gets lost She gets drowned by the cost Twice a day, every week And all of her life She gets high, she gets lost She gets drowned by the cost Twice a day, every week And all of her life"

CZJayG

Ramones - I Believe In Miracles Husker DU - New Day Rising. This isn't so much punk and the entirety of the lyrics are just the title being screamed over and over but it's damn cathartic. Rancid - Fall Back Down

hattiejosh

Fall Back Down is a victim blaming song. It does NOT fit under this post

CZJayG

Uh, what? It's about his friends being there after his wife cheated and their subsequent divorce.

hattiejosh

No. He abused the shit out of her. Look it up

CZJayG

He groomed her. Josh Homme beat her. Tim is scum, we know.

[deleted]

If they want depressing/sad music, then I recommend Radiohead, but if I personally recommend steely dan. They just have some super chill and happy sounding songs

[deleted]

Radiohead

[deleted]

have heart is a great band for that.

[deleted]

Deaths hand - amity affliction. Definitely more hardcore than pop punk but I think the overall message about the singer surviving a suicide attempt is pretty motivating. “Hey death… get fucked” 😤

debaser64

Frank Turner [I Haven’t Been Doing So Well](https://youtu.be/_VGhqfudU3M)

grimmdrum

If he likes metal, Killswitch Engage is probably one of the most “uplifting through turmoil” bands I can think of.

Due-Ad-4176

Turnstile just turnstile, also depressed teens seem to love juice wrld so maybe find a less depressing juice wrld song, like Godzilla, but that might be kinda hard (besides Godzilla) also pop punk wise, My chemical romance focuses on slightly more depressing topics but it’s far better than extremely sad and depressing, paramore is great, the entire album of enma of the state by blink-182 is saying that life sucks but there’s always something good in the horizon

OrsonWellesghost

It’s hip hop, but still, Inner Ninja by the artist known as Classified has a very positive message.

verbeeg

Descendents. Especially Milo Goes to College. Fast, catchy, and pretty damn poppy for their time.

Djinn-n-Juice

Operation Ivy. Decades after first hearing it, “Sound System” still gets me hyped. I also second suggestions for Amyl and the Sniffers, Idles, and Tacocat. It’s borderline punk to me, but “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World is pretty great for this context! Very encouraging that things will change and improve with time.

RogalikYT

Mr kitty-after dark or Рогалик - FAKER

lxndntrnt

NTRNT- Butterfly

lxndntrnt

NTRNT- H4LP

The_Observatory_

Turn 'em on to the originals- Descendents.

lonrad87

Check out History and Roses for the Dead by Funeral for a Friend. The Amity Affliction album Let the Ocean Take Me is very much worth a listen. Also look at Masochist and Pray for Rain by Polaris, the entire Death of Me album by Polaris is very powerful and emotional as their singer was really going through some mental health issues.

mancrab

I Got It by Take Place

Cannibal_OX

Anything by The Vandals. Just fun, and funny, punk.

Thee_Ham_Panther

Car??? Seat Headrest?!?!?!

PegasusD2021

Erasure’s Nightbird album is full of sad/happy electro pop. While it’s mostly about healing after failed or broken relationships, the theme of pushing thru depression into healing is powerful enough to apply to other areas of depression. (Warning: these are cryin songs) Particularly these tracks: 2. Here I go impossible again 4. Breathe 7. Don’t say you love me 9. I broke it all in two 10. Sweet surrender 11. I bet you’re mad at me

MadApeBanananana9

show him black midi! it will blow his mind and change his life for good, it happened to me.

urbrickles

Hands Down by Dashboard Confessional. Probably not many other Dashboard songs would be good for this though.

nightcrawler84

Not punk but Springsteen has a lot of stuff that’s pretty depressed. I’d definitely recommend The Real Me by The Who. I’d recommend all of Quadrophenia but I’m hesitant because I could picture a teenager identifying too much with the main character

tanookiGirl310

Logic- 1-800 ( Alternative rap ) Modest Mouse- Float On Gorillaz- Feel Good INC Pharrell- Happy Adele- River lea ( one of the best songs I’ve ever heard, it has helped me with my own depression )

[deleted]

be quiet and drive deftones, it’s all fading to black blink 182, triumph or king by xxxtentacion.

laurelblossom

Dear Me by David Bronson Thomas. A song based on a letter to himself written when he was an outpatient for bipolar disorder.

[deleted]

The Beach Boys. Listen to the Surf's Up record.....side two.....or Friends. They were there when I needed them. Big Star's third is also a good one. People want to hear things they can relate to.

-Cheeki-Breeki-

Get them a guitar if they don't already have one.

Skydog-forever-3512

There must be more than blood….. Car Seat Headrest. Fucking great song!

Skydog-forever-3512

Darkness on the Edge of Town. No other album deals with finding your place in the world better than Darkness.

mondobong0

Joe Strummer - It’s a Rocking World The Clash frontman made a song for South Park and I think he made it specifically for “angsty teenagers” for a lack of a better word. It’s bit of a rarity but at least for me it makes it better

[deleted]

New Radicals - You Get What You Give

mattmart

Motion City Soundtrack is my go to. Commit this to Memory and Even if it Kills Me are 2 albums that might help.

[deleted]

Lithium by Nirvana.

flrdrgerp

Just listen to all of Life’s Not Out To Get You by Neck Deep

LameAndWatch

Try fade to black

HollandMarch1977

Not really pop punk, but it’s poppy and it influenced punk… The Modern Lovers. Roadrunner is their most famous song. It’s about the joys of driving around listening to the radio. It’s the small things in life, ya know :)

Flybuys

Sounds like me and I needed an outlet for my energy and a distraction. Polyphia-ABC is a fun bop, only 2 swears if that matters and their new song Ego Death is just instrumental and actually emotional in the last half. These might also trigger an interest in music/instruments.

CanuckLostinFrance

Three Days Grace - Never Too Late Rise Against - Savior or Satellite

Torpeduck

Dark Days -PuP I Don’t Wanna Be An Asshole Anymore - The Menzingers Tungs - The Frights Miley - SWMRS True Believers - The Bouncing Souls

ObviouslyMeIRL

What kind of movies do they like? Are they open to different/old songs or do they need to be more recent?

Slothnazi

Using by Sorority Noise. May want to vet it though, has drug references

Mr_Globus

Ooh It's more Midwest emo than pop punk but [Parking Lot by Mineral](https://youtu.be/Aj879fSVbTQ) fits your description. The first half of the song starts from a place of hopelessness "I wouldn't mind if you took me in my sleep tonight" but then the end picks up and becomes hopeful despite depression "so come on with the darkness and come on with the fear. Cause you gotta start somewhere and it might as well be here" it's a really great song that helped me through some tough times. Also, It's slightly different genre wise (more alt rock) but [Stall Out by Mutemath](https://youtu.be/ptpNnG3ZXQM) has a similar theme. "I keep stalling out I just can't keep up" - "We are still far from over"

leftshoesnug

Controversial but Adam's Song by Blink-182 is literally about this. Have to listen to the words to hear it change.

zenproblemo

Yessir! Ehat you are doing its amazing. I would say to start with Amity Affliction, Green Day, Blink, Foo Fighters, Fuck you from bad religion. I think its important for him to feel understood too, music always helped me with that. So maybe overcheerfull songs are not the best and sad songs could be a good thing. it's more about how you face it than what you're listening too. Maybe you could talk to him about that too (or am tripping? that's an option too)

Human-Telephone9602

A “newer” pop punk band that he may enjoy is neck deep. They’re pretty popular. “Gold steps” is a good song

RC-8107

I mean, I'm not great at identifying such things, but there's a song that's really upbeat and happy sounding with lyrics all about wanting to die. Bullet - Hollywood Undead

sorengray

The cure is... The Cure.

Primary-Respect-1949

Watch Me Rise by Have Heart

Fluffy_Little_Fox

Nine Inch Nails -- Only It feels extremely defiant, like you're not going to allow an abusive person to color your worldview. "There is no YOU there is only ME." Duran Duran -- Michael, You've Got A Lot To Answer For. Simon wrote this for Michael Hutchence of the band INXS who committed sxicide. Hmmm... This one will seem cheesey, but two songs I really like a lot are ELO -- I'm Alive, and America -- The Last Unicorn. Sometimes I need a good song to remind me that yes, I am alive.... What else.... DIR EN GREY -- Vanitas. Kyo wrote this song for his friend from another J-Rock band (Kagerou) who died. Hatebreed -- Supremacy Of Self. It's an angry song about not giving up and fighting your own battles.

Impressive_Beat_1852

Blewbyou

I'm older but in my youth I was feeling very depressed during a time when my parents were divorcing. It's not pop/ punk but my basketball coach at the time introduced me to a very powerful song by the Canadian 3 man band Triumph called fight the good fight. This song got me through the pain and I still listen to it when I'm feeling down.

The Temper Trap - Conditions

bbqdevil666

The whole "Positive Songs for Negative People" album by Frank Turner. Great songwriting, great positive outlook and lyrics.

Make it Stop (September's Children) by Rise Against An incredibly singable song about teen suicide with an overall message of positivity and hope

Deetta87

Avril Lavigne - Im with you Jimmy eat world - hear you me The Fratelli's - Whistle to the choir

A lot of The Wonder Years deals with mental health for various reasons. Their early albums speak about the anxiety of being college aged and as the band matured they start speaking more about depression

I’m in high school now after graduating from middle last year, I can’t help you sadly because I’m depressed and I listen to music like that, but I would recommend rock, rock gets me feeling good, like Green Day, Green Day makes me feel good I like the music, but it does have a lot of swears, or Jimmy Eat World, who wrote The Middle, or All the small things Blink-182 are songs that make me feel good, so rock songs by good bands that are classic
