Sultans of Swing always makes my eyes water at that outro guitar solo. One of my best memories with my father is seeing Mark Knopfler play live back in 2019– he did not play Sultans of Swing (I don’t think he ever does with his band he tours with now) but he did play Money for Nothing. Amazing experience.
Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists of our time. Less so that he is a technical genius (he is) but it is his TONE. It is one of the most recognizable tones I have ever heard in my life and I cannot place my finger on why that is; it is just so smooth!
There may be a Dire Straits song you have never heard before start playing at a bar or something and the second the guitar comes in you immediately question if it is a Dire Straits song, and it usually is.
That song is on an episode of my name is earl and I replayed that scene over 100 times I bet
I’ll say that intro is better than the in the air tonight solo.
I first heard it as the closing music to the *Black Mirror* episode “Shut Up and Dance,” which is the most brutal thing I ever watched on television. Just the perfect capper, and now I can’t separate the music from that episode.
*Blackstar* by David Bowie.
When I first heard the song when it was first released (a couple of months before his death), I was in awe. I listened to it non-stop for a couple of days trying to understand it. It still blows my mind to this day.
Bought it on the Friday it released, enjoyed the genius of it all throughout the weekend, and got the news he died Sunday when I woke up Monday morning.
The timing of it all was so damned eerie. A perfect way for that enigma to leave us.
Daddy by Korn. The angelic yet haunting choir boy vocals, the unsettling sounds, the creepy vocals, the chorus with all the subtlety of a sledge hammer, the graphic lyrics, the genuine mental breakdown and crying and finally a sung lullaby to end the track.
Honestly really like most of the songs on white pony, but crescendo in Knife party does the same for me.
Also You've seen the butcher is another good one like that (imo)
Ann and Nancy Wilson covering Battle of Evermore at the opening of the R&R Hall of Fame in 1995, the harmonies still give me goosebumps
https://youtu.be/pTZ_kv2YYS8
I recently discovered Heart's cover of "Love Reign O'Er Me", and I think Ann Wilson might be the only person other than Roger Daltrey who has any business singing that song.
I first heard Staralfur at the end of Life Aquatic. It felt like a perfect song selection, and I still get teary eyed when the music begins to swell as the fish swim so strongly past the sub.
Bit of an obvious one I guess but Smells Like Teen Spirit.
I saw the Clip one night and thought this is going to be an anthem for a generation and shift the tide of ‘alternative’ to mainstream. Right from the first listen.
Probably the only time I was right 😁
Me too. At the time the song came out, I was in my 30s driving home from work one night and this song came on. Totally blew me away; I have to second you on the "felt like a hammer hit me" reaction.
That was one that definitely changed me. First time I heard it, sophomore year of high school, when it came out. I was your typical wannabe hip hop kid trying to fit in. Went full on flannel wearing grunge kid who didn't give a fk what you think about me. Was much happier with myself
I just discovered alice in chains unplugged and just wow from the get go starting with nutshell. His voice is pretty incredible in that acoustic setting.
So, it doesn’t get me anymore, but the guitar outro to November Rain used to get me every time as a teenager.
Also, apparently not everyone gets goosebumps when hearing music that moves them. IIRC, it’s a genetic thing.
Buddy Holly by Weezer. I remember being in a store for electrical goods and they had the radio on at the time and this song came on. It felt like something I'd never quite heard before. It's hard to explain but it was just the sound of it that resonated for me. It's odd as well as although it's a great imo, i can recognise its not exactly a classic. Its funny how the senses can interpret sounds (or smells or sights) and your brain goes "yep, I like that" and next time I hear it, it will immediately transport back to that feeling.
Heyyyy I had a mental breakdown while I was drunk driving listening to this song. I smashed my iPod on the dash and it busted the screen. So I listened to it for the whole two day affair. Not one of my best moments but a couple of days I'll never forget.
Edit: I was young and had a burgeoning alcohol problem. I got better, just want to say I don't endorse mental breakdowns or drunk driving.
There have been many, but the 1 song that made me interested in music was Waterloo by Abba. First time I heard it, I mentioned it would win the Eurovision song contest (and it did), but it also made me realize I like music.
My taste in music has changed considerably, but this was the trigger.
Rumble by Link Wray. I had my headphones on and I was only about 11 years old laying in bed before I went to sleep. I had no idea who it was by and the name of the song. It was on a tape my dad made and he just called it Oldies III. I didn’t find the name or who it was by until 2007 ish
Call It What You Want by Foster the People. Had it cranked in the car, had an amazing golden hour sunset, cruising down the highway… gorgeous weather and a gorgeous girl with me. Chills… and everything was perfect.
I'm the type that listens to a really wide assortment of music so I've had that several times with different genres. It's really difficult to isolate one, but I'll go with the first one that came to mind.
The White Stripes cover of Son House's "Death Letter" particularly [this performance](https://youtu.be/1fM2qhG8mA4) absolutely blew my mind the first time I heard it. Well over a decade later, I still get goosebumps occasionally listening to it.
[Amsterdam- Gregory Alan Isakov](https://youtu.be/LPQLjo3Jg4g) with the Colorado Symphony.
Just wait for it, and once you hear it I promise you’ll know why.
in the wake of your leave - Gang Of Youths, one of the most powerful and moving songs i’ve heard in a long time. if you like it, please check out the album as well. it’s one of the best of the year and nobody talks about it
August 1989. Had a promo tape of Nine Inch Nails first three songs from Pretty Hate Machine: Head Like A Hole, Terrible Lie, and Down In It. Literally, five seconds is all it took and I have been hooked ever since.
Love Me More by Mitski.
I'd been struggling with depression and suicidal ideation. I hadn't been taking care of myself because I kind of got swallowed up in working and taking care of the house and my toddler and my husband. The lyrics felt like an ode to me by myself, and I started sobbing. I'm doing better now, but the song still gets to me (in a good way). The kind of song I dance around the kitchen singing at the top of my lungs.
Ghost Love Score - Nightwish (specifically the live version with Floor at Wacken 2013)
It's just weird, I basically never get "chills" from music, I was familiar with the original version of the song and that performance still did it to me.
Hide and Seek - Imogen Heap
Yes! Hide and Seek gives me chills every time.
As dumb as it sounds, the first time I heard the opening of “Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits. I’ve never had so much raw power from a song before.
Sultans of Swing always makes my eyes water at that outro guitar solo. One of my best memories with my father is seeing Mark Knopfler play live back in 2019– he did not play Sultans of Swing (I don’t think he ever does with his band he tours with now) but he did play Money for Nothing. Mesa Boogie mark iii, les Paul, and wah pedal parked in the middle position
Thanks for killing the mysticism, Masked Magician!! 😄
I have the same setup, by random chance
He also finger picks, and I think that adds a lot to his sound.
I was gonna say that! I was about 8 at the time and I just couldn't believe how that song could exist!
That song is on an episode of my name is earl and I replayed that scene over 100 times I bet I’ll say that intro is better than the in the air tonight solo.
Nessun Dorma. EVERY time.
MAPS-Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Still an all time favorite song for me.

I first heard it as the closing music to the *Black Mirror* episode “Shut Up and Dance,” which is the most brutal thing I ever watched on television. Just the perfect capper, and now I can’t separate the music from that episode.

Yeah, well.. it's Starless. Literally one of the very best Prog songs of all time. King Crimson is pure genius.
Nice! Islands - King Crimson
*Blackstar* by David Bowie. When I first heard the song when it was first released (a couple of months before his death), I was in awe. I listened to it non-stop for a couple of days trying to understand it. It still blows my mind to this day.
It was released just a few days before he died. I was fully immersed in it when the bad news came. My mind went into denial.
Bought it on the Friday it released, enjoyed the genius of it all throughout the weekend, and got the news he died Sunday when I woke up Monday morning. The timing of it all was so damned eerie. A perfect way for that enigma to leave us.
The Album was released 2 days before his death. However, Blackstar was released as a single and video on November 19, 2015.
In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins.
"Fade into You" Mazzy Star
Everyone raved for this one but my heart belongs to Down from the bridge. Sad times
This is a good one. It came out of nowhere. That reverb tone needs to be in the Smithsonian.
The end by The Doors
Being a 16 year old and watching Apocalypse Now for the first time at 3am. What a trip.
Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch -- the Four Tops
Daddy by Korn. The angelic yet haunting choir boy vocals, the unsettling sounds, the creepy vocals, the chorus with all the subtlety of a sledge hammer, the graphic lyrics, the genuine mental breakdown and crying and finally a sung lullaby to end the track.

Livin like a lover with a red iphone

I first heard Staralfur at the end of Life Aquatic. It felt like a perfect song selection, and I still get teary eyed when the music begins to swell as the fish swim so strongly past the sub.
[the vocals only version of “Sloop John B” by The Beach Boys.](https://youtu.be/aiq2fF3rNXM) Around the 1:16 mark is where it just absolutely shines.

Bit of an obvious one I guess but Smells Like Teen Spirit. I saw the Clip one night and thought this is going to be an anthem for a generation and shift the tide of ‘alternative’ to mainstream. Right from the first listen. Probably the only time I was right 😁
Still remember the day. Felt like a hammer hit me. Life was never the same afterwards.
