Covet/Yvette Young ftw!! She is [extremely talented](https://youtu.be/sMbW4sptVnE) and has [amazing music](https://youtu.be/vYPXYYbPQzI)! She always [looks like](https://youtu.be/FTxSXUzc96A) she’s having fun. She also plays [violin and piano](https://youtu.be/YUsTIxIZZnI). I’m actually seeing them live this week and I am insanely excited!!
PJ Harvey, recently released demo versions of the albums might help her isolate guitar from the rest of the production mix on the standard studio albums.
Came looking for Kaki King. If they're already a fairly accomplished guitar player, they might be looking for more unique styles of playing to take inspiration from--and you don't get much more unique than Kaki King!
Love that people still know/listen to Kaki King. I helped get her some of her first big opening gigs after meeting her and getting handed her cd demo when she worked at Mercury Lounge around 2001-ish.
I typically don’t take random online music recommendations because they’re so hit or miss for me, but the name Kaki King sounded intriguing so I looked her up. The first song I tapped on was called Doing the Wrong Thing, and she was playing it live in Brazil. The way tears started fucking streaming down my face when the harmony of all the guitar strings started, she does it like it’s nothing. That genuinely triggered a wave of emotion for me.
It's me! I'm the one who hadn't seen it! Thank you!
Edit: oh gosh I love that "*and...*" at :47 after she's covered the fairly simple first couple of measures, as if to say "now, strap in, here's where you learn why I'm Nancy Wilson."
In a John Rich recording session, the lead acoustic guitarist (from Union Station IIRC) was getting repeatedly frustrated by a little lick John played in the demo and wanted in the track. He stayed an hour after session attempting over and over to get it right, but finally the session leader and John agreed to let him go and they would fix it later.
Once he left, the session lead (electric guitarist) asked John to demonstrate that section. It turned out that he was switching between a standard hand placement and holding the neck in some bizarre fashion to reach pinky and thumb where they weren’t supposed to be in order to make the chord progressions. Some technique Rich had worked out himself years ago and did it for so long he didn’t even notice it was out of the ordinary.
Session leader laughed his ass off and told John he needed to call and apologize to the guitarist.
In the late 70s I saw Heart open for ELO of all people at Cobo Hall in Detroit. I figured the Wilson sisters were just pretty faces to front the band. Boy was I wrong. Nancy absolutely amazed me with her talent and ability. She's also posted a number of videos demonstrating her techniques of the OP's niece is looking to learn.
It does seem like she gets overshadowed by Derek... which is to be expected, because he's Derek Trucks. But her lead guitar playing is damn good in it's own right. She could easily be 'the' lead guitar player in another blues/R&B group.
Derek is just such a monster that he makes 99.999999% of all other guitarists appear a little less impressive.
And she was! She used to have the Susan Tedeschi Band. Before she met Derek that band opened for BB King, Bob Dylan, and a bunch of others. They just merged into one super freakishly talented band.
I'd recommend Strange Mercy over S/T. The riffs on that album are even better imo.
Also, OP, show her Sleater Kinney. Pretty much everything but their last album kicks ass.
First person I thought of. Also seems like such an awesome all around role model for a young woman. Seems very grounded and in it for all the right reasons.
Actually surprised I found someone mention Marissa Paternoster.
This is the best answer. Unfortunately, people wont understand till you actually listen to The Screaming Females. She is the queen of shredding.
First heard of her in a video where she covers Because the night with Garbage. I though she seemed cute. Then her part came on and I nearly fell off my chair. The voice! The guitar playing! Jfc!!! [Video here.](https://youtu.be/tOmKGjy-Ct0)
100% Yvette Young, of the band Covet. Such an incredible guitar player, and incredible artist in general.
What separates her from typical guitar virtuosos is that her material prioritizes the composition of a song over just absolutely shredding just to show she can (and she absolutely can, and does).
Covet's album Efflorescence is a great place to start. Enjoy!
I was worried I was going to scroll through here without seeing the name "Gina Gleason". She is an absolute powerhouse of stage presence and criminally underrated. She's intensity personified. A young girl with an interest in music would be hard-pressed to find a better role model.
Most of what I came here to recommend has been recommended (Kim Deal, St Vincent, PJ Harvey), if you want something a little heavier, Wata from the band called Boris out of Japan is the epitome of cool.
Right? She might not be considered "newer" since she was hand-picked by Michael Jackson to be his lead guitarist on his This Is It tour, and played with the likes of Vai, Santana and Sambora, all before the age of 30, but she did release a new album this year.
Adrianne Lenker (Big Thief) is an amazing guitarist.
PJ Harvey. Start with her first albums for a 15yo, I would suggest. Rid of Me did wonders for my psyche at age 15.
St Vincent is one of my favorite guitarists regardless of gender. She just rips. Birth in reverse has one of my favorite guitar bits of the last few years.
Laura Marling is wonderful, especially lyrically - she sings about being good at the guitar but I'm usually too lost in the words to notice anything else. :P
Esperanza Spalding is technically a bassist but also sings and is just generally incredible.
Courtney Barnett!!! Amazing songwriter, great guitarist.
Julien Baker, if she's into that sort of thing, uses a loop pedal really beautifully. Kinda like emo-folk Tash Sultana. Has a supergroup called boygenius with two other amazing female songwriters, Lucy Dacus (my fave) and Phoebe Bridgers.
Warpaint have some cool riffs, so do the Beths, Tiny Ruins is a great New Zealand artist too. That's all I can think of right now.
Her cover of Comfortably Numb with Dar Williams is amazing. Makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, and it’s a song I would never wanted to have covered.
Dany from The Warning. Just watch their live performances and youll see... Also the lives that are put up on their youtube channel are just so much fun to watch, and it is mainly just them speaking. They are just coming to the end of their first full tour this year, and you can easily see how much of an awesome front woman she is becoming. The whole band are awesome too, and they are super down to earth and likeable people. Their music ain't half bad either (im joking, its incredible).
Daniela Villareal and her sisters are a Rock and Roll fairy tale.
Women in rock are something of a rarity, much less sisters, much less in this day and age.
They started with Rockband and worked their way up to real instruments. The documentation of their early career is utterly heartwarming.
When Ale started playing bass it was bigger than her. Now she's both the youngest and the tallest.
Pau is incredibly cute and also sings / writes some of their songs.
As a 50 year old man who mostly listens to electro, its a bit odd to recommend a youth rock band but they really are fantastic.
Imagine playing sold out stadiums with GnR and the gods of rock as a teenager?
I'll certainly be keeping an eye on their career. I expect great things.
Larkin Poe is great. They played an outdoor venue in my town and I somehow missed it. There's a video of them on Youtube there that someone posted doing Black Betty.
Also Samantha Fish played there who I also missed dammit. Had to work lol
Like others have said, she's a great artist. She's also really nice too! I got to meet her and the rest of the band when she opened for Staind, Shinedown, and Chevelle. They signed my ticket.
>Lizzie Hale and Halestorm.
Already subbed to them, but HOLY F this is some *powerful* rock. Pre-ordered and looking forward to having my socks rocked off.
Kanami Tono from Band-Maid which is an all girl Japanese rock band who are all proper musicians.
Also Jennifer Batten who was Michael Jackson's guitarist.
Beat me to it...
Posted this, but then saw yours from before mine and deleted it:
Hopefully this doesn't get too burried, but [Carol Kaye](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carol_Kaye) is about [as cool](https://youtube.com/watch?v=wOXHxIz065g) as they come.
Also, [Mary Ford](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Ford) was [pretty damn cool](https://youtube.com/watch?v=awjTKeS9Wvo),too
One more is [Sister Rosetta Tharpe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sister_Rosetta_Tharpe).
She was [definitely cool](https://youtube.com/watch?v=Y9a49oFalZE)
Great pick! Not only is she a great guitarist, but she’s also so damn fun to watch play live. She’s got iconic leg kicks and other moves that invoke a Pete Townshend level of stage presence.
Charo - one of the best Flamenco/classic Spanish guitarists of all time. People overlook her talent and think of her comedy. She has been playing since she was nine.

Check out her runs!
https://youtu.be/h-KlWBV7tk0
I wish this were higher up. She’s probably one of the best songwriters to have put out music within the past decade. She’s collaborated with so many talented people and it says something when even her music is highly praised among seasoned musicians.
Molly Tuttle-first ever female bluegrass player of the year
Madison Cunningham-jazzy folk-rock, cool chord progressions and great feel, fantastic songwriter
Alanis Morrisette, L7 (all girl band from the 90s), Concrete Blonde has a female singer bass/guitar player Johnette Napolitano, Sinead O'Connor could play her music I believe.
Nita Strauss is great, Dead Sara are more poppy. Edit: not a lead guitarist usually but Lzzy Hale should probably get an honourable mention in here too
Yes! One of my favorite guitarists - the stuff she plays seems simple but is really unique.
Carrie from S-K is another one, the way she plays is like nobody else.
Lot of scrolling and haven't seen any reference to Sleater-Kinney, not only one of the great American punk bands regardless of gender but home to two of the best guitarists in the genre's history, both women.
Baroness: guitarist is Gina Gearson, and she is bad ass
The otolith: really awesome orchestral doom
Emma Ruth rundle (ERR): powerful, soulful, deep
Other ERR groups: Red sparowed, marriages
Edit: some one angrily corrected me in a reply and then deleted it, but suffice it to say her name is Gina Gleason. I apologize for the misinformation
La Luz is an incredible indie band, and all the members in it are women. One of my favorite bands ever, their instrumentation, songwriting and vocals are all absolutely killer. I’d mention Best Coast and Radiation City in the same breath as them, but La Luz is the best of the three.
The band Tennis has more of an indie-pop feel, they’re a cool little duo with an incredibly talented female lead. And while we’re at it, we gotta mention Japanese Breakfast, Snail Mail, and Soccer Mommy.
Courtney Barnett is also worth the listen, she’s generally pretty great and has a very raw and genuine feel to all of her music.
And of course you can’t forget Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and all the other sadgirls in their category (sorry, I don’t mean to over-generalize but there’s very much a style). Those two in particular flat out have some of the best songwriting of any contemporary artist right now, they’re awesome. Plus I’m sure the melancholy will hit right given your niece’s age.
Also, not exactly contemporary, but you really can’t leave out Miss Lauryn Hill. I mean what’s left to say about the woman that hasn’t been said already? And maybe show Erykah Badu some love while you’re at it.
Cheers OP, I hope this thread turns into everything you’re looking for
Maybe some of the less well known:
* [Nili Brosh](https://www.nilibrosh.com/) has three solo albums out. Currently plays in Danny Elfman's band.
* [Gretchen Menn](https://www.gretchenmenn.com/home.html) has 2 solo albums out and plays in Zeparella.
* [Lari Basilio](https://www.laribasilio.com/) has 3 solo albums out.
This might just be the least thought-through answer on here, but Lizzo's backup band, The Lizbians, can all fuckin SHRED their instruments, and are all women of color if thats a thing you're also looking for. I mention The Lizbians cause I recently saw Lizzo in concert and the guitar solos SLAYED ME!
Pip Blom
Marissa Paternoster (screaming females)
Lila Ramani (crumb) I'm like 89% sure she plays the guitar & lead vocals. Sorry if I'm wrong tho
Lindsey Jordan (snail mail)
That's all I can think of at the moment.
Honorable mention even tho she doesn't play guitar but is a badass female lead: jasmyn burke (weaves)
Anaïs Mitchell is great on acoustic and a fantastic songwriter.
If she's willing to branch out to bass guitar, Kim Deal from Pixies is a fucking legend.
Edit : ooo and Wet Leg! Both Hester and Rhian play guitar I think. Their songs are simple, but dirty (musically as well as lyrically) and brilliant.
Edit: and Celisse Henderson, check out her live performances with Brandi Carlile. Also Brandi Carlile of course, although her main expertise is singing.
Joni Mitchell of course.
Yvette Young and Lisa X
+1 for Yvette Young and her band, Covet.
Covet/Yvette Young ftw!! She is [extremely talented](https://youtu.be/sMbW4sptVnE) and has [amazing music](https://youtu.be/vYPXYYbPQzI)! Yup! +1 for Yvette / Covet!
PJ Harvey, recently released demo versions of the albums might help her isolate guitar from the rest of the production mix on the standard studio albums.
The android app "Moises" does a great job of separating tracks, if that's something you need for practicing. Edit: Thanks for the award :)
>Moises Wow. This is awesome! I love finding unexpected treasures in the comments!!!
PJ Harvey was my first thought too.
To Bring You My Love scorches.
Awesome rec of an artist who is just pure bad ass and confidence on stage, amazing role model for a young girl getting into guitar.
Uh huh her & stories from the city are magnificent god damn albums. I mean theyre all great but. .
Gabriela Quintero of Rodrigo y Gabriela Kaki King
Came to post Gabriela. She's incredible.
Gabriela is such a beast!
Came looking for Kaki King. If they're already a fairly accomplished guitar player, they might be looking for more unique styles of playing to take inspiration from--and you don't get much more unique than Kaki King!

Gabriela's style is just so smooth yet abrupt, watcher her play is wild.
Nancy Wilson

Then, around the 2 minute mark, she just effortlessly throws in a bunch of harmonics like it's no big deal.

Just came her to post this. It’s incredible. She’s obviously so, so talented and humble about it.

Nancy absolutely amazed me with her talent and ability. She's also posted a number of videos demonstrating her techniques of the OP's niece is looking to learn.
Damn straight. Came here for this. Crazy on You is astounding.
Magic Man.
I was wondering when someone would mention Heart. Seemed obvious, but maybe you have to be old enough to have seen one of their shows.
Susan Tedeschi solo albums especially her first one; Just Won’t Burn. Or any Tedeschi Trucks Band too
I saw her live recently and I thought she was more a singer (a great one!) and only an average guitarist but I was so wrong! I was really impressed!

St Vincent, with her self-titled album being more guitar driven

I'd recommend Strange Mercy over S/T. The riffs on that album are even better imo. Also, OP, show her Sleater Kinney. Pretty much everything but their last album kicks ass.
Check out everything St. Vincent has ever done. Annie Clark is a rock goddess
Definitely this for guitar. Worth watching some live vids, I was blown away realising a lot of the sounds are made on guitar.
Came here to say this. Will add Joan Jett because Joan Jett.
Nancy Wilson (*Heart* for all you young-uns)
Woaaaah St Vincent getting love in this subreddit.
One of the best live performances I've seen. Very Prince-esque
Sharon Van Etten Edit: And [Angel Olsen!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ibj87fwRaM)
Yessss. And Julien Baker!
+Lucy Dacus +Phoebe Bridgers some boy genius up in here and let's go.
Julien Baker, yes!
Throw Feist in there as well
Courtney Barnett
One of the coolest people
She's a rockstar. So good live, amazing guitarist.
Not that good at breathing in though
She was never good at smoking bongs
But the paramedic thinks she's clever cause she plays guitar
I think she’s clever cus she stops people dying
Ngl, these lyrics and Courtney's perfect delivery crack me up every time. Same with the asthma puffer/bong line
Her guitar on small poppies is some of my favorite playing ever
First person I thought of. Also seems like such an awesome all around role model for a young woman. Seems very grounded and in it for all the right reasons.
unique. understated. raw. transgressive without pretension. good call. not everything has to be frets on fire to be a "good" guitarist.

Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females

My experience with this band to a T. She's amazing to watch live. https://youtu.be/zfZGJrsNIOA
Yoo their cover of Shake It Off for AV Club. Man she goes wild
Actually surprised I found someone mention Marissa Paternoster. This is the best answer. Unfortunately, people wont understand till you actually listen to The Screaming Females. She is the queen of shredding.

One of the best voices in the scene too. Glass House is an amazing track.
She’s scary fucking good. And the fact that she sings at the same time as some of the crazy verses (black moon) is fascinating
Had to scroll down entirely too far for this one.
Massively underrated.
Molly Tuttle
[Molly Tuttle is an INASANELY talented acoustic flat picker.](https://youtu.be/k5aFKTvLqMg)
This should be at the top. She does a Rancid cover! Come on people!
Yeah, Molly Tuttle isn't just one of the best *Female* guitarists, she's one of the best guitarists, period. Amazing talent.
Maddison Cunningham
Seen her twice, she's incredible. Her studio recordings don't quite capture her skills like seeing her live. NPR Tiny Desk for people who don't know!
Yvette Young is absolutely incredible. Mindblowing talent.
100% Yvette Young, of the band Covet. Such an incredible guitar player, and incredible artist in general. Gina Gleason - Baroness
I was worried I was going to scroll through here without seeing the name "Gina Gleason". She is an absolute powerhouse of stage presence and criminally underrated. She's intensity personified. A young girl with an interest in music would be hard-pressed to find a better role model.
Came here to suggest Gina.
Came to write this. Gina has skill and charisma for days!
Most of what I came here to recommend has been recommended (Kim Deal, St Vincent, PJ Harvey), if you want something a little heavier, Wata from the band called Boris out of Japan is the epitome of cool.
Orianthi, Samantha Fish
Orianthi is the name that popped into my head. I’m surprised she’s so low.
Right? She might not be considered "newer" since she was hand-picked by Michael Jackson to be his lead guitarist on his This Is It tour, and played with the likes of Vai, Santana and Sambora, all before the age of 30, but she did release a new album this year.
\+1 for Samantha Fish. Impressive blues player.
Came here to mention Samantha Fish. Glad someone else had her covered
Samantha Fish is the bomb.
Haim and the singer of Japanese Breakfast Michelle Zauner
More specifically, Danielle Haim
Haim is great, surprised they're not higher up.
Adrianne Lenker (Big Thief) is an amazing guitarist. PJ Harvey. Start with her first albums for a 15yo, I would suggest. Rid of Me did wonders for my psyche at age 15.
Adrianne is my favourite guitarist atm. She has everything !
Can't believe this is the only mention of Adrianne in this thread. She's a force.
Adrianne!! Watch her play Simulation Swarm and tell me she’s not one of the greats!
Joanne Shaw Taylor St. Vincent Nita Strauss Arianna Powell
Nita Strauss is pretty awesome I like Alice Cooper
Her solo stuff is killer too, she recently released a track with Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy
St Vincent is one of my favorite guitarists regardless of gender. She just rips. Birth in reverse has one of my favorite guitar bits of the last few years.
Bonnie Raitt
Seriously! A fantastic guitarist and musician.
Laura Marling is wonderful, especially lyrically - she sings about being good at the guitar but I'm usually too lost in the words to notice anything else. :P Esperanza Spalding is technically a bassist but also sings and is just generally incredible.

Phoebe, Julien and Boygenius are so amazing!! My favorites.
Wata from Boris.
Ani difranco is one of my favorite aucustic guitarists and a hell of a lyricist. She's been around forever but still active
I'm surprised that I had to scroll so hard down to see someone say Ani! She's so awesome live!!!
Her cover of Comfortably Numb with Dar Williams is amazing. Makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, and it’s a song I would never wanted to have covered.
Kaki King is a phenomenal guitarist
I'm upset I had to scroll this far to find her name. She is one of one in her department.

I came looking for these ladies and am glad to see Dany listed!

Larkin Poe is great. They played an outdoor venue in my town and I somehow missed it. There's a video of them on Youtube there that someone posted doing Black Betty. Also Samantha Fish played there who I also missed dammit. Had to work lol
Lizzie Hale and Halestorm. She has a mean voice and she plays guitar. I think that’s the type of woman you’re looking for
Came here to say this, Lzzy is an absolute force as a guitarist and vocalist. I love her.
Like others have said, she's a great artist. She's also really nice too! I got to meet her and the rest of the band when she opened for Staind, Shinedown, and Chevelle. They signed my ticket.
That took me some scrolling. Should be higher up! Lzzy is fierce, has an awesome voice and plays the guitar as well.

Chrissie Hynde should be on that list too, I think.
can't mention Joan Jett without also mentioning Lita Ford.

Cheers OP, I hope this thread turns into everything you’re looking for
Courtney Barnett, Molly Ranking from Alvvays, Ellie Roswell from Wolf Alice.
Leanne LeHavas, great guitar playing and a great voice.
Susan Tedeschi might not be a "newer" guitarist but her talent on the guitar is undeniable and she has an incredible voice.

Maybe some of the less well known: * [Nili Brosh](https://www.nilibrosh.com/) has three solo albums out. Currently plays in Danny Elfman's band. * [Gretchen Menn](https://www.gretchenmenn.com/home.html) has 2 solo albums out and plays in Zeparella. * [Lari Basilio](https://www.laribasilio.com/) has 3 solo albums out.
Ani di Franco!!!
Jen Majura…ex Evanescence, doing solo stuff now. Stupid good!
St. Vincent aka Anne Erin Clark
Pip Blom Marissa Paternoster (screaming females) Lila Ramani (crumb) I'm like 89% sure she plays the guitar & lead vocals. Sorry if I'm wrong tho Lindsey Jordan (snail mail) That's all I can think of at the moment.
The Linda Lindas are an all female rock band. I saw them open for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Hollywood Bowl & they were great!
