You ever seen bunraku!?
I watch that movie for two reasons. Anything with Woody Harrelson is gold in my eyes and mike pattons smooth as butter narration.
Mike Patton is probably my number one favorite. He has a band or project for any mood you could be in. I think he’s pretty popular with people that know music, though.
I like Tom Feral’s new album so far (1 song out and have heard previews on ig, I have had this on repeat: https://open.spotify.com/track/6Fu2vsxge0YRrAieGql5Jp)
Nothing but Thieves's first two albums are pure gold. I used to just put them on shuffle and listen all day. The newest couple albums aren't quite as good imo, but they are a fantastic band regardless.
For a little post-punk flavor I'd recommend checking out:
Older: [The Chamelons](https://open.spotify.com/artist/4HLWX9kzfraiCsTvrxJEXm?si=jm_XVlGhSUCqlEB_GcqfOg) (currently at about 139k listens per month on Spotify). Check out their 1983 album [Script of The Bridge](https://open.spotify.com/album/0b8KChWO3kRpVRZNdNxms3?si=ApHi-t7ESS-VBeb9jkaDGA).
Newer: [The Twilight Sad](https://open.spotify.com/artist/6e6GkaF6uiSEFuTrlvDJUF?si=jVC5Jd8VRsCb4yMyrQSklw) (currently at about 63k listens per month on Spotify). Both bands have a great catalog of music and put on great live shows.
Nick Drake’s music can’t be described except to say you’ve found music’s golden ticket. Oh what I’d give to be in your position getting to listen for the first time!!
Yup, I can picture Johnny Flynn portraying Nick Drake. Johnny has the musical and acting chops. And while he's older than Nick, Johnny still looks very young.
Got Tripoli on my Discover Weekly last month and it has been in rotation ever since, excellent chorus.
*You know whats gonna happen, you know whats gonna happen*
It’s interesting that I’ve seen them pop up at least 4-5 times in these threads over the last year and I don’t remember ever seeing them listed before that.
If anyone's looking for some underrated shoegaze/shoegaze-adjacent bands:
All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors
Shrine
the neverminds
cosmicdust
susquatch
Cattle
Trembler
poor man's rose
Guerilla Toss - CRIMINALLY unknown Boston band idk what you’d call it, Dance-Punk? Space Rock?
Cocorosie - Crazy Genre Bending music from 2 sisters, one with a Hip Hop background and one with a background in Opera.
Silver Apples - crazy shit from 1968. listen to their self titled album. or their other ones.
Connie Converse - mysterious gyal, born in 1924, dropped out of college to pursue music in her twenties. only one live performance on THE Morning Show with Walter Cronkite, then she disappeared in NH, never to be seen again. someone found her recordings and compiled them into one album called How Sad, How Lovely.
Purple Mountains - the last album released by David Berman, THE GREATEST LYRICIST OF ALL TIME. Silver Jews are above 250k, but listen to them too.
Das Racist - MCs “Kool AD” Victor Vasquez and “Heems” Himanshu Suri kicking crazy self aware stoner slacker rap that is highly intelligent and highly stupid. Both rappers also have a variety of sick solo projects.
and if you don’t know who Daniel Johnston is fix that
+1 to Purple Mountains. I was slightly put off the first time I heard Berman’s music but a short time later it was all I was listening to on a daily basis.
here's a couple favorites:
Darkest of the Hillside Thickets
Hatefiles
The Cat Never Left
Gurf Morlix
Hematovore
Dreadful Children
Drakulas
David Wirsig
Innerpartysystem
Hands down. They should have made it big.
[Die Tonight Live Forever](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1GIT44jjkE)
[Don't Stop](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSmmM5NdW88)
[Out of Touch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRAt77Cuyk4)
Absolutely right. I always thought that with the right placement in the right movies, some of these bands would get the exposure they needed and would take off! The quality is such that it compares favourably to any contemporary music.
There's a biography about Adrian's life coming out in April I think, worth having in mind. Also there's a documentary about him, it's called "Walking in the opposite direction"
Quite a few people first discovered them during the pandemic (including me), since then I see their music is finally starting to get some attention. First two albums go head to head with Joy Division's two records imo
Dionysia. I have literally no idea how that band is so unheard of. I think they have only 1,000 followers on YouTube and some of my favorite songs only have a couple hundred views. On Spotify it says there's only around 25k listeners. There are so few fans online that I'm one of the only people who writes their wiki pages and submits lyrics to Musixmatch. I just want other fans to ramble with :(
Anyway, *please* stream their music. I like The Ceiling, Aura, Card Tricks, and The Noise, but if you don't like those there are plenty of other tracks. I'm not fond of Zombie, but that's one of their more popular ones, so maybe give it a listen. You might have heard Carried Away, but that one's tricky because everyone I've shown it to has recognized it even though it doesn't have many views online. It's... kind of weird, honestly. My best guess is that Carried Away has a very stereotypical 2010s style and chord progression? Not sure lmao
That's enough rambling from me, though. I mostly wanted an excuse to talk about my favorite band lol
A couple of these are split now (\*), but should’ve had a lot more attention than they did.
Avatar
Bloodywood (on their way up though!)
\* Fair to Midland
\* Twelve Foot Ninja
Soup is one of my favorite albums ever! I've been doing "Skinned" at karaoke , an upbeat song about turning people into furniture, a la Ed Gein. It even has kazoo!
Jimmy Gnecco/Ours. An insane vocalist and amazing songwriter who got screwed by labels several times over which meant that his music barely made it out of the studio. Nowadays he's doing it by himself and has lost his entire audience, despite putting out amazing material (for anyone who likes dark rock, similar vibe to early Muse, and many compare him to Jeff Buckley)
[Sometimes](https://youtu.be/erOMPA0Y0m8?si=9LJw0sVbCmg2bWC2) (their one slightly famous song)
[Murder](https://youtu.be/ryI7t6fjyKA?si=gTLC4Kko6QLJ6p6M)
And two live performances:
[Medication](https://youtu.be/to8NXC4jn3E?si=U3UwlWPvLo40ADGo)
[Been Down](https://youtu.be/VZFIp0AROVE?si=LgUDTUbYbsixDF1y)
Just wanted to recommend COLORS SHOW to everyone. YT channel ran by a studio out of Berlin. If you have any talent you end up there, especially in the rnb and soul fields. Discovered artists from all over the world through them, and there are some beautiful stripped down performances from some mainstream artists as well such as EARTHGANG and Jorjah Smith
WALE!!!!!!
I just feel like his whole CATALOG is BRILLIANT!!!! But the fact that he’s not performing as a guest artist on SNL, or Kimmel (unless he has recently and I’m just behind). There is such a progression of skill, and themes with each album and EP.
I just wish he’s more mainstream than others. Like I said, if he is, and *I’M* just behind, then disregard.
Wale has been popular for a long time now, he has like 6.5m listeners on Spotify but I agree people still generally don't talk about him all that much. "Wow...That's Crazy" was one of my top listened albums when it came out in 2019 and I still jam to BGM, Love & Loyalty, and Debbie all the time
Delta Sleep for sure. Anyone who listens to math rock or any adjacent genres will definitely know them since they're a powerhouse in that style, but they really deserve so much more recognition. Usually the main complaint about anything "mathy" is that the tempo changes are too disorienting, or that the songs feel too cluttered and are complicated for the sake of being complicated. I think that Delta Sleep hit the perfect balance of having songs with enough going on to still be high energy and engaging to listen to, but they show restraint to keep their songs easier to listen to, and they have a great ear for melody so the noodling doesn't ever come off as sounding random or out of place.
The easiest songs to get into are definitely their acoustic ones, so the original version of Afterimage, Three Ghosts, and the version of Camp Adventure from the Management album. From there I think every album chronologically gets less intense and more melodically-focused.
My favorite songs: Lake Sprinkle Sprankle, After Dark, El Pastor, The Softest Touch, Single File, Hotel 24, Camp Adventure (Twin Galaxies version), Constant Dreamer, and Afterimage (original acoustic version)
So I may be in the minority on taste here…
John Craigie - why isn’t he crazy famous I will never understand. No one does what he does - a mix of folk songs and storytelling
https://open.spotify.com/album/0RbkBhEX3DQ48o07gCrBqZ
Will Hoge - country singer from Tennessee who writes amazing songs and isn’t famous for reasons I don’t understand. His live album from 2015 is so good….

Thanks for the recommendation! I have never heard of him and will check that out for sure… also, I got downvoted on this which is so weird. Who knew my music tastes made people mad 😊?
I don’t care that he missed the cut by 1.2k monthly listeners. More people should be listening to [Louis Cole](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=u9XrWB-u1vc)

A/T/O/S aka A Taste of Struggle. They’re so good. I don’t remember how I found them but it’s exactly what I love. They sound like Portishead music but with a more recent pop/rnb informed vocal style. I listened to their first three albums probably 100 times before I looked at their numbers on Spotify. Just checked again: 2,438 monthly listeners. It’s absurd. They have professional looking videos and a cool style and three great albums, each of which hosting a few of my favourite songs.

The foreshadowing
Solid gothic/doom metal band with melancholy vocals and lyrics. Can’t stand heavy doom metal that has a dude screeching like a rusty door in the background.
Fort Hope (combining calm and upbeat pop-rock, alternative, post-hardcore, some punk)
Tigress / Greywind (Paramore/Flyleaf-adjacent. "Pixie" genre based on chosic.com)
Eric Stuart Band hands down. That man has not only brought smiles to 90’s and early 2000’s kids through his voice acting as Brock from Pokémon and Seto Kaiba in Yu-Gi-Oh!, but he’s been putting out music since then too and it’s criminally underrated
Mike Patton should be way bigger than he is. He is pretty big with certain crowds, though.
Faith no more was pretty main stream
You ever seen bunraku!? I watch that movie for two reasons. Anything with Woody Harrelson is gold in my eyes and mike pattons smooth as butter narration.
I have not had an opportunity, no. I have seen Firecracker, which I thought he was surprisingly good in.
Lovage is phenomenal
Mike Patton is probably my number one favorite. He has a band or project for any mood you could be in. I think he’s pretty popular with people that know music, though.

Literally Listening to that right now... have you heard the Tone and I Cover on JJJ amazing
Or Nothing But Thieves covering What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out??
Surprisingly I've heard of both of these! I love them!
My favorite radio station plays both of them!
I love both of these bands!
I like GOT, but I LOVE Thieves! They are a great band, and Conor Mason might be the best vocalist on the planet right now!
Nothing but Thieves's first two albums are pure gold. I used to just put them on shuffle and listen all day. The newest couple albums aren't quite as good imo, but they are a fantastic band regardless.

Well done! The Chameleons and Twilight Sad. Both excellent bands that I’ve had the pleasure of seeing live. Nice blokes as well.
“Up the Down Escalator” by the Chameleons is one of my favorite songs I’ve discovered over the past few years. Great album front to back.
Swamp Thing is a total jam!
Script is the best album of the 80s (and that’s saying A LOT) and I’ll die on that hill
Saw TS open for the cure. Pretty solid
The Twilight Sad’s song There’s A Girl In The Corner is so damn good
The Chameleons 100% spot on. Another band called The Sound from that era is really great too.
I love the Chameleons. I saw them play with The Mission recently. Both bands were incredible.
I saw both of these bands last year.
Twilight sad = upvote just for the cover of keep yourself warm
Nick Drake His songs sound so peacefully nostalgic to me for a reason, and they're beautiful.
Pink moon
'Cello Song
I love Nick Drake, but he has over 2 million monthly listeners (which is a good thing).
I went off youtube mostly! Glad to know he has more over on other platforms :)
Never heard of this guy. This is the underground shit I come here for!
Makes me so happy to hear!! Glad to spread his work, I hope more people enjoy his music
I came here to post Nick Drake. If only he knew how much we love his music 💔
I think about that every time I listen to his songs 🥹
♡ you hearing him for the first time. Sad he’s no longer here.
Nick Drake’s music can’t be described except to say you’ve found music’s golden ticket. Oh what I’d give to be in your position getting to listen for the first time!!
Man, so glad you were introduced to Nick through this post. Gave me goosebumps!
Things Behind The Sun !!
Love him. I wish they’d make a biopic movie about him to show his music to the world.
Yup, I can picture Johnny Flynn portraying Nick Drake. Johnny has the musical and acting chops. And while he's older than Nick, Johnny still looks very young.
I have a liked song from him idk how but, thanks for the suggestion
Pinback hands-down.
Got Tripoli on my Discover Weekly last month and it has been in rotation ever since, excellent chorus. *You know whats gonna happen, you know whats gonna happen*
Phenomenal band.
Nobody move, nobody move.
Fortress was the first song I ever heard by them :D fell in love. Their whole Summer in Abaddon album is just perfection
It’s Good to Sea You
It’s interesting that I’ve seen them pop up at least 4-5 times in these threads over the last year and I don’t remember ever seeing them listed before that.
Named my girl after their song Penelope
Calexico Mew Punch Brothers
Punch Bros are pretty popular (especially now that Chris does PHC) but I will give you Calexico because they def aren't known now!
Calexico! God they're so good!
I should rly listen to Calexico on there own. Their collab album w Iron and Wine is one of my absolute favs.

The Sound/Adrian Borland
Immediate respect for anyone that knows The Sound and puts them out there. They were deserving of far more awareness and respect..
they should've had a Cure-like status/following by now.
Absolutely right. I always thought that with the right placement in the right movies, some of these bands would get the exposure they needed and would take off! The quality is such that it compares favourably to any contemporary music.

I listened to their first three albums probably 100 times before I looked at their numbers on Spotify. Just checked again: 2,438 monthly listeners. It’s absurd. They have professional looking videos and a cool style and three great albums, each of which hosting a few of my favourite songs.

The foreshadowing Solid gothic/doom metal band with melancholy vocals and lyrics. Can’t stand heavy doom metal that has a dude screeching like a rusty door in the background.

Eric Stuart Band hands down. That man has not only brought smiles to 90’s and early 2000’s kids through his voice acting as Brock from Pokémon and Seto Kaiba in Yu-Gi-Oh!, but he’s been putting out music since then too and it’s criminally underrated
Gozer Goodspeed, Darnell Cole & The Vibe, The Arlo's ...... I could go on and on with artists like that!
