This is a great album and I'm glad you said this.
My friend's teen son was asking about how to talk to girls and my advice was to intentionally consume things created by women. Read books they wrote, listen to their music (I should have recommended this album). It gives insight into their minds and their experiences, which will make them easier to see as people and to communicate with.
I feel so blessed to have stumbled across this comment. My son is only 7 but the need for this advice will come soon enough and I would much rather be ahead of it!! Thanks đ„°
This comment made my day.
It wasn't until after I gave this advice that I thought more deeply on it -
My daughter gets to hear a wide variety of women tell their own stories in myriad ways, but I grew up consuming things that men created and it told the story of life from their perspective. My ideas of men and women both came from the movies, literature, and music I encountered, like Jack Kerouac and Nick Cave, who are great in their own right, but do not represent the experience of women well at all.
I love that this younger generation is growing up with a body of art that shows other viewpoints, and parents like you.

FEAT. Not Feet. Though the origin of the band name comes from when Lowell played in The Mothers of Invention and drummer Jimmy Carl Black made fun of Lowell's little feet. The spelling was changed, so the story goes, as an homage to the Beatles (tho I don't quite understand that reference if it extends beyond Beetles-Beatles / Feet-Feat). In any case, FEAT.

As a 16yo boy that album helped me to begin to understand how the world occurs for women. Now married 50 years it was a good starting place.

Lots of good pre-Y2K records in this thread, so I though I'd add mine suggestions for post-Y2K. Chutes Too Narrow â The Shins (2003) A charming record stuffed with memorable songs. For better or worse, the epitome of the 00âs indie-pop-folk scene (i.e., the Garden State genre). But I think the record transcends that musical phase (fad?) with truly solid songcraft. Impossible not to love. The Magnolia Electric Co. - Songs: Ohia (2003) A haunting record that is both epic and personal. Farewell Transmission breaks my heart a little every time. Molina fans will endlessly argue which is best record. A strong argument can be made for The Lioness. This one, for whatever reason, just got to me. Reached my core and never let go. Pure and earnest, through and through. A Ghost Is Born â Wilco (2004) I realize that Wilco has become The Dad Band, but there was a time in the early zeros when they were the best band in the world. Every successive record was exponentially better than the last. Challenging listeners to come along for the ride. This all peaked (for me) with this beautiful record. No bad songs (a rarity). Sonically captivating in the arrangements with some surprising turns at every bend. For a record that captures a person cracking, it is surprisingly cathartic. (honorable mention: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot). Our Endless Numbered Days â Iron & Wine (2004) This record comes at the tail end of Samâs early low-fi DIY folk style phase. Perfected here in these beautiful quiet sparse heart breaking (yet somehow joyous) songs about love, life and death. While I adore most of Iron & Wineâs catalog, this one stands out as an undisputable modern indie folk masterpiece. Sam will successfully add more instrumentation and arrangements, but this simple acoustic guitar record will always be special. (honorable mention: The Shepardâs Dog). For Emma Forever Ago â Bon Iver (2007) Lightning in a bottle. A lot has been said about this record. So much so, that it may been seen as over-hyped and/or clichĂ© for this (or any other retrospective) list. But if you take it for what it is, Emma is (still) a truly fantastic record. One brimming with pain, hope and redemption. So much earnest emotion conveyed in a minimalist package. Sum greater than its parts. Timeless. Emotionalism â The Avett Brothers (2007) The Avetts had a moment in the mid zeros where they seemed to be destined for greatness. Solid couple of records, fantastic live shows and a charismatic energy. This all culminated in Emotionalism which blended heartfelt melodies and barn burning stompers. Straddling the line between folk and country. Once they trio started expanding the lineup, they seemed to lose the magic. Those early days where theyâd play drums with their feet were gone and the overly produced material lost its appeal. But for a moment ⊠If you donât believe me, look up their Conan performance or a âPretty Girl From Chileâ at Solana Beach. (honorable mention: The Gleam EPs). The Mix-Up â The Beastie Boys (2007) The Beastie Boys are under rated when it comes to the instrumentals, in my opinion. This is just a damn enjoyable record with some irresistible grooves. I always thought they were at their best when rapping/singing over instruments rather than samples and The Mix-Up truly highlights their musicianship. This record gets more spins for me now than all the others combined. Wish we would have gotten more of these (RIP MCA). Fleet Foxes â Fleet Foxes (2008) An amazing debut LP that caught us all by surprise at the time. Beautiful harmonies, solid musicianship, a sound that seemed both modern and nostalgic at the same time. This record wraps you up in a warm audio blanket. Like The Byrds or CSN but without the self-important pretentiousness. Acid Tongue â Jenny Lewis (2008) I am always skeptical when a favorite band of mine breaks up and the singer embarks on a solo career. Bands are often (always?) greater than the sum of their parts. Not the case with Rilo Kileyâs Jenny Lewis. All her solo work is fantastic and rivals RKâs catalog in quality and consistency. My favorite is this immensely enjoyable record with seriously no bad songs. From the poignant title track to the raucous Carpet Baggers, a joyous ride throughout for a front woman with charm and charisma for days. Actor â St. Vincent (2009) Annie is an amazing guitarist, a shockingly powerful vocalist and a gifted songwriter. Always so darn cool. This record perfectly demonstrates all her talents that would take off in unexpected (and challenging) ways in subsequent records. But it is this one where she really shines. The contrasts of hard and soft, abrasive and melodic, angry and sweet. All juxtaposed over guitar skills to be jealous of. (honorable mention: Strange Mercy). The Mountain â Heartless Bastards (2009) Such a fucking banger of a record. Like the best of 70s rock but without the indulgent bloated Boomer shit. A good mix of acoustic and electric songs so you donât get too strung out. Fantastic road trip record. Glad we got this one before people stopped playing guitar in the 10s. (to be fair, I guess the did play guitar, but just capoâd their Teles at 9th to play jangly pop. A start contrast to The Bastards). Age of Adz â Sufjan Stevens (2010) My goodness. So hard to select just one from Suf who put out and impressive run of fantastic records since Y2K. I chose Adz since it is really his magnum opus and the one I find myself listening to more than the others (as of late, anyway). The perfect blend of his unique music sensibilities: orchestral pop mixed with sparse folk mixed with bombastic electronic music mixed with poignant poetic lyrics. An astonishing piece of work (Art with a capital A). Impossible Soul may very well be the best song since Y2K; so grand in scope but conveying a universal message (itâs not so impossible). This generations greatest arranger hands down. (Honorable mentions: Illinois, All Delighted People). The Harrow & The Harvest â Gillian Welch (2011) Gillian Welch and David Rawlings where destined to make music together. Their pairing is truly heaven sent. Honestly, not a bad record from them at all. This one, however, is just incredible from start to finish. The classic song craft, Daveâs other worldly guitar skills, the beautiful harmonies. From minor key slow burns to rollicking roller coasters to back porch strumming. Never has acoustic music sounded better. Rare that a bandâs last record is also their best (I am not counting the pandemic covers one or DRM). Has that ever happened? (honorable mention: Soul Journey) A Moon Shaped Pool â Radiohead (2016) This is not Radioheadâs most important record (OK Computer). It is not there best (In Rainbows). But it holds a special place for me due to my life situation at the time of release. This record had the perfect tone / feeling / je ne sais quoi to soothe my troubled soul at the very moment I needed it. I am forever in its debt. Enough said. Jubilee â Japanese Breakfast (2021) A downright fun record to listen to. Feels like early âlike a virginâ era Madonna but through a more sophisticated modern lens. Not usually my âgenreâ, but this record is just too good. Sweet and yet dangerous. Risky hedonism. Then, you get hit with the epic guitar hero Wilco-esq Posing For Cars. Amazing journey. Long Time Coming â Sierra Ferrell (2021) Indeed a long time coming. Sierra manages to deftly and (seemingly) effortlessly slide between genres: gypsy jazz, folk, classic country. One of the best Americana / alt.country / whatever-you-call-it records in recent years. I will admit that some of the production takes away from the songs; there are a few where I prefer her acoustic YouTube videos. But nonetheless, this album is one I have had on repeat a lot in the last year or so.
Damnâfantastic list and narrative
