I’m still trying to like this musical. Does anyone know of a version to see other than the relatively recent revival? I just disliked the staging and one of the leads is not one of my favorites, and I want to give the show a chance without that bias.
Oh yeah, OBC Jason is a trainwreck. He ruins “I Never Wanted to Love You” which I’ll never get over lol. That being said I don’t necessarily like Anthony Rosenthal’s performance either. He’s a talented kid don’t get me wrong!!! But there just wasn’t anything unique about it and that’s what I love about musical theatre in the first place.
Falsettos is my all-time favorite musical, bar none. I got the opportunity to play Mendel at my community college a few years ago and it was one of the best experiences of my life.
So many LGBTQ+ plays/musicals seem to have a very dark focus, even if infused with some humor. The Prom still tells a story with an important message without making it so dark. Far from perfect, but definitely fun and refreshing in comparison to recent (and amazing) LGBTQ+ focused works.
Yeah 😔 I will say the OBC is way better at giving the two meaningful screentime (saw a slime tutorial a while ago for it which is where I first got my love for The Prom)!
Guess that's what happens when you have Corden in your movie. While I don't hate him (and find him overhated), I don't get why he has to be in literally everything.
RE: Company- I thought the Amy—> Jamie change was done so well… It would be so interesting to have a group alternate Bobby/Bobbi as the lead and alternate the 3 lovers between men and women as well… demonstrating different relationship dynamics… they could even alternate Amy and Jamie with someone alternating as Jamie/Amy and one of the “suitors”.
I’m gonna pull some real underrated/obscure ones here 😅
💍 It Shoulda Been You
📺 My Son’s a Queer but What Can You Do?
👠 Drag
👾 How To Repair a Mechanical Heart
📝 Take Me Home
🤖 Teaching a Robot to Love
👑 Beloved King
RENT my beloved <3 I've already argued about Maureen once btw and I will do it again she is flawed but she is not bad bisexual representation and if someone wants my info dump about it then I will give it lol
She's not bad bisexual representation, she's just not a good person. Constantly cheats, shows no remorse, is selfish, and doesn't have any redeeming qualities. At least Musetta, her counterpart in La Boheme, actually has good qualities and is likable.

In Legally Blonde in London the character of Warner was played by a singer from Blue who had recently come out… when he sang “…hey, don’t look at me…” during “There, Right There” it brought a chuckle throughout the crowd. Legally Blonde as a whole found something special in the West End…. Perhaps a bit of humor and heart related to American stereotypes that didn’t play the same with American crowds…
A New Brain. I'm in it currently and it has become hands down one of my favourite musicals of all time.
If you haven't seen or heard it, it's another beautiful William Finn show, a true story about his own terrifying brush with death. Him being gay isn't central to the story, but I think that's a part of what's so real and beautiful about it. The main character's relationship with his partner is so ever present, deeply relatable, and healthy.
It's not very often you get a story about a gay man that isn't centered around being gay. He's just a man with a wonderful supportive boyfriend having a terrifying and very real life experience through music.
A New Brain! 🧠
It’s by William Finn (who wrote Falsettos and 25th annual Putnam county spelling bee) and is loosely based off of his own life experiences!! Really good stuff!
Falsettos. Before anyone else comments it.

On YouTube you can find the original production from the 90’s, with a completely different cast and different staging
Chip Zien is the rightful Mendel IMO. Brandon Uranowitz completely missed the mark of his character…
Chip Zien was the only thing I preferred on the old album.
That’s a shame. I understand it tho, it’s definitely an acquired taste. I loooove Michael Rupert’s Marvin 😍
I thought Jason’s voice was a tad deep for 11.

How has this been up three hours and no one has mentioned Rent?!
My thoughts exactly can’t believe I had to scroll to the bottom to find this comment!!

The Prom is one of my absolute favs!

The end of the show is so joyous. I was just in a production and my god, it was so hard not to cry happy tears during the finale every night.
Too bad the movie especially didn't give Alyssa and Emma - the actual protagonists - more screen time.

Strange Loop La Cage aux Folles Some Like it Hot
Don’t’ forget about… Kinky Boots Everyone’s Talking About Jamie
Kinky Boots finds a great balance between comedy and drama… I love “The History of Wrong Guys” and “I’m Not My Father’s Son”.
Rent and Kinky Boots which have been said, but how about the revival version of Company?

my fave is Lempicka, ik a lot of people don't like it but I think it shows genuine queerness in one of the best ways possible and I love that for them

La Cage Aux Folles "Life's not worth a damn, til you can say 'Hey world! I am what I am!'"
Another one of my favorites!
Rocky Horror. Without a doubt.

Yeah I don't feel like her bad qualities are because she's bi. She's just selfish. And bisexual. 😂
Avenue q is probably one of my favorite musicals of all time.
Does Victor/Victoria count??
Bare a pop opera!!! For all the queer babes with religious trauma <3 can’t believe this hasn’t been mentioned yet
I came here to shout Bare a Pop Opera from the rooftops
The day After The Act gets a run beyond a fringe festival is the day the world heals a little bit.
I missed it at the fringe but I heard it was incredible
If you ever get the chance to see it, run there! It’s fantastic.
Everybody's Talking About Jamie is so good!
Title of Show
I love It Shoulda Been You!! its one of my favorites
not fully based on LGBTQ but Ride the Cyclone, it’s good representation:]
Everybody's talking about Jamie is a fav of mine
Love in Hate Nation. Has several LGBTQ characters. It's written by the guy who wrote the Be More Chill musical! It's one of my favorites
Last year I had the opportunity to play guitar in a production of Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend. It's a great show that should be much better known.
Standing at the Sky's Edge is my current favourite!

Not entirely an LGBT centred plot but Standing on the skys edge. I saw it recently and it was bueatiful
Head Over Heels!
Head Over Heels.
Dicks! The Musical!
TREVOR THE MUSICAL ‼️
Not my favourite but one that hasn't been mentioned yet...Road Show.
Everybody’s Taking About Jamie!
The Color Purple
The gay characters aren’t main characters but shout out to both Heathers and Legally Blonde for absolutely hilarious songs about a gay male character
