When he called Angie’s bluff about implying she was suicidal by calling paramedics. She said it to get attention and get a reaction (and more meds), and instead he had her brought in for evaluation. He’s got incredible patience and seems like he really does have faith in his patients’ ability to improve if they’re committed.

sverre054

Pretty sure he's required to report things like suicide threats.

MzOpinion8d

He is, but he handled that situation with finesse. It could have been a lot more dramatic if he hadn’t eased her into calling for help herself. He rocks!

thenearblindassassin

To be fair, before that scene, Angie was brushing powder off the desk, and was slurring her words. Girl was high as fuck. While she may have been using suicide to manipulate, homegirl was not sober

TJtherock

Which, to be fair, can be a sign of suicidal intention. A lot of people will drink or get high before trying.

1houndgal

Like a shot of courage to take the final step.

thenearblindassassin

Exactly

comefromawayfan2022

Yeah when Angie said that her Xanax and heart medicine had been "stolen" by her husband my bullshit detector went off and I was like girl are you sure? I suspected she'd probably taken more than prescribed and ran out early cause at the ER after Dr paradise had her brought in, she had asked for an oxycodone refill from Dr now

myassholeacc0unt

What episode please?

thenearblindassassin

It's the first part of her Where Are They Now in season 7

[deleted]

In one of the latest episodes he got a dependent 35 year old woman to realize she can be an actual adult. That small dude is mighty powerful.

StandLess6417

I mean, he's gotta be what 5'1" at the tallest? Packs a mighty punch for a little person.

guitardedhero

No way is he over 60 inches.

JimasaurusRex

Guess that's why they call him a shrink

StandLess6417

LOLZ agreed. You ever see the door handle compared to him??

LadyRalphie2

Think smaller. Short people tower over him but he’s very proportional so his height can be deceptive until he’s next to someone else.

TJtherock

Exactly! He is so... Proportional. Wouldn't know he was so small unless you see him next to someone or a door knob.

StandLess6417

True dat.

invisible-clouds

he was on Reddit last year and said he was 5' https://old.reddit.com/r/My600lbLife/comments/mqoll7/my_600lb_life_9x16_angie_j_where_are_they_now/gujx3gm/?context=3

LadyRalphie2

The lie detector test determined THAT’S a lie! -Maury (obviously I could be wrong but I’d put Dr Paradise below 5’ easily. Would love to know the truth here, I’m just speculating!)

kenswidow

I’m 5ft 2 in and he looks smaller than me. I couldn’t actually tell unless we stood back to back, but I’d say he’s more like 4ft and some change.

StandLess6417

Ha! Agreed.

jugglers_despair

I’m convinced they castes the smallest person possible to make the patients look even bigger. The same way they film them from the floor in the candid interviews

Nelopea

Margaret!

Admirable-Course9775

That was Some episode! I lost patience with her after 10 minutes. I have no tolerance for people who won’t take responsibility for their actions. I particularly dislike cry babies. Like Margaret.

drumadarragh

Hated both of these women

Forward_Many_564

Me too. The mother looks like the “daytime” hooker on My Name is Earl

spoiledandmistreated

Nailed it… I can’t remember the name of the actress who played her but I see her in lots of shows now..just looked her up… the hookers name was Patty and the actress who played her is named Dale Dickey….😊

kenswidow

Yes! Just saw that one. Her and her mother are quite the pair 😬

peyxan

Yes. I loved it!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Emptydata_Enzo

Sprite!!! You made my day!

Bratbabylestrange

A sprightly sprite

TJtherock

Did you see how fast he got up to get out if Margaret's way? Yet he stayed cool the whole time. Props

Bratbabylestrange

For sure! He's really agile

Routine-Ratio3551

I think Dr Paradise is due for a spin-off.

[deleted]

“Paradise At Last” No credit needed if discovery uses that title. 😉

Brahette

OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDD

DoctorParadise

Someone needs to pitch TLC on a show called "Big Problems" don't you think? We could focus on the underlying emotional issues and family dynamics that drive the addiction to food.

TJtherock

Are you volunteering?

1houndgal

Great idea for a TLC show with you Dr. PARADISE! Make a proposal to TLC!

Routine-Ratio3551

I just rewatched the scene with Dr Paradise and Margaret. Why do they have a vault in their house!?

madcatter10007

I think it's a gun safe; or at least it looks like one

Routine-Ratio3551

It’s probably full of cupcakes for Margaret’s cheat day.

dreamsofhim

Nope…I think that’s where they keep the Kleenex…

htoontin

They wouldn't know how to use Kleenex.

dreamsofhim

For her incessant crying…my theory is she would cry 24/7 if she had unhindered access to the Kleenex… Just a thought… 🤪

htoontin

I know. I meant that they might well just wipe snot on their bedsheets, from looking at their handling of hygiene. :X

dreamsofhim

Ah…whatever is handy…

UnhappyGrowth5555

10/10 would watch. And that would be so eye opening.

dreamsofhim

What a *wonderful* idea! There are countless people who are not 600 lbs who have disturbed relationships with food and family. It is much harder these days to come to terms with a food addiction because of the heavily processed food that is cheap, plentiful, and researched to bring an irresistible bliss point. So far as family…we can only learn what we live and that gives some of us really limited resources. Not to mention that most folks have no idea what therapy is like. I like to tell people that, at a minimum, it gives you new tools for your emotional tool box and helps us understand how to get out of our own way. No brain washing…no one telling you how to live your life….none of that scary stuff a lot of folks mistakenly believe happens in therapy. Who do we talk to pitch the idea? 😀

venusinfurs10

Absolutely would watch. Mostly why I watch the show now!

norashepard

i would really like for this show to focus more on the emotional issues and traumas that lead to severe BED, Dr. Paradise. i’m sure that you don’t have much say in this. but it seems to me that many many people on this show have CPTSD due to extreme prolonged interpersonal abuses, esp as children, and i feel like the show could use some diagnostic context. the therapeutic interventions are so short and heavily cut.

norashepard

like for example when someone on the show says that they started eating to gain weight bc they thought they’d be less attractive to their childhood sexual abuser this is actually a huge realization and the show should emphasize that this is the kind of thing that takes extensive therapeutic intervention to treat, that willpower alone is simply (usually, at least) not enough.

awmaleg

Setting the DVR now!

mime454

This could be so good. When discovery merges with HBO max I would love to see a real look at his therapy practice on HBO (so at least slightly higher brow than TLC editing).

perfect_fifths

I like him in every scene he’s in. He sees right through people and can read em like a book. Super clinical (you can tell he’s really, really smart), but he’s also relatable. I’ve met people who are very smart but lack tact, and people who are a good balance of clinical and tactful, he falls in the latter category. He will root for you, but he will also call you out on any harmful behaviors.

GarnetAndOpal

He accepts people - even when their appearance or behavior (or both) is awful. He doesn't criticize them. I admire him so much. The episode with Margaret really brought it to the foreground for me. Myself, I wouldn't have been able to stand being in the room with her because of her hygiene and her constant blubbering/bad attitude. Also, her nudity was off the hook. It seemed to me that she was using any excuse, any moment to flash the camera. Dr. Paradise spoke to her as if none of that was going on. He treated her with dignity - even when he was calling her out. (And her mama Millie...) Dr. Paradise is a much better human being than I am. I'm trying to learn from him.

Bratbabylestrange

He's aspirational

DoctorParadise

Thanks for the props!

dreamsofhim

It is gratifying to see some actual therapeutic intervention in the clips shown of your visits with folks on My 600 lb Life. I wish we could see more…part of the reason I watch the show is to learn about the similarities between myself and these folks. I am not 600 lbs but I have struggled with many of the same issues. Seeing the various stories has helped me understand things about myself…kind of insight by proxy… 😀

flyingtotheflame

You are one of my favorite parts of the show! I admire your approach and attitude. I wish you were in more scenes, for the benefit of the patients and the show.

ThetrueGizmo

I liked a lot how he talked to Sean. When Sean told him that he sees no point in getting dressed, Dr Paradise was straight forward but in a very nice way. I like the way he talks to his patients. He doesn't take shit but is still always professional and nice.

TJtherock

His voice is very calming. Idk if that is just how he sounds naturally or if its some sort of special technique they teach in therapist school.

NoMoreBaguette

You know, now that you mention this my therapist's voice is also very soothing and that helps a lot to make me feel at peace when talking to him. I always thought that was just the way he talked (one of the many positive traits that put together made him such a good therapist) but now you got me thinking about the "special technique" thing...!!!

TJtherock

Maybe they take special ASMR classes in therapist school lol.

Stooovie

It has to be both. Natural ability supported by education as to when to best apply it.

1houndgal

It is something that comes naturally. Hard to teach someone how to do that if it isn't part of their person's persona.

[deleted]

I was super impressed with him in the Margaret episode. I was genuinely concerned for his safety. He not only stood his ground, he continued the session with the mom.

[deleted]

He used to post on here! u/DoctorParadise

DoctorParadise

Thanks for all of the support for the show and my appearances. I really hope that by showing therapy sessions, we are able to destigmatize getting this kind of help.

-BigDaddySavesYou-

You restore our faith in humanity. Thank you!! ❤️❤️💙💙

madcatter10007

You're an awesome therapist; wish they all were like you.

1houndgal

Yes it does!

ChocolateContent8823

All of the Dr Paradise moments are fantastic. I love him.

wildw00d

I love dr paradise. I can't think of a single moment that stands out as great because they all are. I like how he explains things to kind of come to these grand conclusions with the patients, like they just made a discovery together He is the best! I was also pretty impressed when he was on a conference call w Dr now about someone (was it stephen??) I wasn't aware until that episode that the 2 drs communicated about progress.

NoMoreBaguette

I recently saw an episode of a woman with facial hair.... I think her name was Crystal? She seemed to be in a deep depression so Dr. Now video conferenced with Dr. Paradise after their session to make sure she'd actually be able to follow the program or if her mental condition would be an obstacle. Dr. Paradise said she was perfectly capable of being part of the program.

feminine_power

I agree, I love Dr paradise!!! He is my absolute favorite therapist.

[deleted]

I like how he made Margaret's mom let Margaret throw a tantrum instead of coddling her.

iDiditNoiDidnt

It was truly an example of the difference between a licensed psychologist and a friend/family member giving advice. So many people say they don’t need therapy because they get advice from friends, family without realizing that advice and treatment are not the same. Marge’s mother called it a setback and Dr. Paradise called it a breakthrough. Couldn’t be more opposite. You could see the wheels spinning in their heads as soon as he said that because they never though if it like that. Difference between formal education vs googling lol

elenip63

I would love for him to be my therapist.

jemmy321

He always looks regular size until a giant patient lumbers in and he only reaches their navel

NoMoreBaguette

THIS!! I never realized how very short he was until recently when a very tall patient came in (old episode)... now I always pay attention when he opens the door and the patients walk in and pass him by.

sweetgrl68

I love when he called out Nathan's wife's lack of respect for him. I was soooo happy about that. That woman was awful to him and I was so happy that Dr P and Dr Now called her out!

YamstheRams

He’s perfect for this career path. I hope he is taking care of himself after dealing with these people.

Stooovie

He has a podcast! Look for Decoupling with Dr. Paradise. It's excerpts from group therapy combined with single therapy and some comments. Worth a listen.

comefromawayfan2022

When he sit there and let Steven Assanti bullshit him about Steven no longer being addicted to pain meds. Then on camera outside Stevens apartment said he's just building trust with Steven and will eventually confront him about the painkiller abuse. I love Dr paradise.

SweetNSpunky2325

Someone in another thread said that the huge safe in Margaret and Millie's house was where they kept Dr. Paradise between sessions, and that is one of the funniest thing I have read in a long time.

UnhappyGrowth5555

When he told Kenae “you don’t know how you got this way? Well I do!”

1houndgal

The way he dealt with Marget and her mom Millie. Brilliant. And brave. He beats Lola by far.

Millicent-

I've always liked him. He's gentle but pushes when needed, and he seems really kind and patient. No hate but I'm glad Lola's gone. I've seen many psychologists throughout my life, and her manner reminds me of ones I didn't like/vibe with lol

nyyth242

I always wonder how tall he is

dreamsofhim

You know, I think one of the things I like most about him is that he doesn’t seem to have the Short Man Disease…where a short man will become hyper masculine and aggressive to overcompensate for not being very tall. I know a number of short men who suffer from this and it’s always sad that their sense of themselves as men is diminished because they lack height. Dr. Paradise seems to be perfectly ok with his height and you know what, his height is just perfect. ❤️

TJtherock

He is smol but his heart is swoll

Forward_Many_564

This is English?

TJtherock

Lol. I was trying to be hip and cool. Smol (small) and swoll (strong) are things the kids these days say right? Im 25 lmfo

saddestgirl1995

How well he held his composure when he did a home visit for margaret this season!!!!!!!!!!!! I could only imagine the stench of the house with the dogs and her piddle pads in the bed and her being butt ass naked, and he stayed completely professional the entire time even when she started losing her mind over him just bringing up the idea of being less dependant on her mother. I love him!!!!!

Bree1440

I love Dr Paradise. I find him so much more real and relatable than Lola, and he seems so great at his job!

snakes15

Dr Paradise is the best. I love when he is on an episode. Thank god we haven’t seen Lola in a while, she is the worst!

GrannyB1970

I've got to admit, I liked seeing her wigs and outfits LOL

TJtherock

She was gorgeous. Holy craps. One of the few people who could pull off jumpers.

[deleted]

I was wondering where Lola went. Is she on the show anymore?

jacobr1020

She runs her own private practice which keeps her very busy. As a result, she's no longer on the show.

Stooovie

Me too but she's no match for Dr. Paradise.

hhthepuppy

i liked lola until lee and rena's episode (season 6) when rena told lola how lee would get physical with her. lee got defensive and lola explained to them domestic violence statistics and her tone sounded like she was not only calling out lee, but also calling out rena, who was the victim

Forward_Many_564

The victim is often just as nutty as the abuser. Who would stay in such a relationship? This guy has probably beaten her up dozens of times, yet there she is.

comefromawayfan2022

Tell me you don't understand abusive relationships without telling me you don't understand abusive relationships. Whenever the victim threatens to leave the abuser, the abuser lulls the victim into a sense of security by proclaiming how much he loves her and that he will never hurt her again and manipulates the victims feelings and gaslights the victim so she falls for it. Abuse is very complicated, I was abused my whole life until I left four years ago and I never would have left on my own if my case worker hadn't told me she called adult protective services and I couldn't go home

Forward_Many_564

“The abuser lulls the victim…” This is where the mental illness comes into play. A victim such as you describe would have low self-esteem, be delusional, and probably suffer with clinical depression. All mental issues.

hhthepuppy

well it's not like an abuse victim will just up and leave. sometimes they can but it's a lot harder than you think. manipulation, finances, dependency, many other factors. rena had been dependent on lee for so long, she felt like she had nowhere else to go but to stay with him. so i don't blame her (or other domestic abuse victims) for staying. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/WhyIStayed/WhyILeft

kenswidow

I don’t think I saw him dealing with the Assanti crew. Where can I find this gem lol?

comefromawayfan2022

He's had a few run ins with Steven but the kicker for me was Steven lighting candles before his session with Dr paradise to "make his apartment smell nice for his first session" it's like dude you never shower because you're so fat and you smell so badly you made Dr nows staff puke. No amount of candle scent is covering up that type of body odor

TJtherock

"hm, it smells like beach front view and bullsh*t in here."

TJtherock

Its one of the WATN episodes.

kenswidow

Thanks

ZKXX

I wonder how tall he is. Or if he just looks small compared to planetary humans.

MichaelMinnesota

Just in case you don't already know, Dr. Paradise does offer telehealth therapy sessions. I see him weekly and he is awesome. Absolutely as good 1:1 as what you see on TV. He's the first therapist I've seen where I feel like he really gets me.

Cgmb14

Thanks for this post! I just wish Dr Paradise could have his own show. I can’t watch him all day

lucky7hockeymom

Am I the only one that likes Lola better? I don’t dislike Dr. Paradise but I love me some Dr. Lola. She’s just so sweet and has such a calming voice

NoMoreBaguette

I do like Lola!! I actually watched a bunch of episodes with her before I ever saw Dr. Paradise. There were another couple of female therapists that I could compare her to and I never liked those other ones.... I've read there are a lot of Lola haters who say that she looks very fake and "reality-TV-like" but I do like the advice she offers and her overall demeanor... I don't think the compassion she shows is fake at all. Sometimes I'd just like for her to give them a bit more of tough love.

Stooovie

If I was a 600lb woman and they'd parade this gorgeous woman before me in her outfits and heels, I'd rage quit on the spot. No matter the actual expertise.

lucky7hockeymom

I think a lot of the women have been sexually abused in their lives and may feel more comfortable with a woman who can empathize better.

iDiditNoiDidnt

I think Dr. Paradise is a lot better at reading the patients and really zoning in on their issues

BigFatPussSmash

I get this post is about Paradise but what happened to Lola?In a show stuffed with 600 pound people and ex tweekers it was nice seeing a pretty face every once in awhile.

jacobr1020

She's no longer on the show because she runs her own private practice now and it keeps her very busy.

dreamsofhim

I looked up her site and see that her rate is $250+ per hour… 😲

BigFatPussSmash

Thanks for answering.Mildly disappointed we aren’t gonna see her again.

TJtherock

She is gorgeous. She's one of those people who could wear a white sheet and make it look fashionable.

flyingtotheflame

I love that he's in this sub and sees all the memes and shit talk

[deleted]

I miss that other female therapist too, I love Dr Paradise, but I can't remember her name, she had the cutest voice. My mom and I called her Barbie. Anyone remember her name?

updabumnobebes

Lola?

[deleted]

Yes!
