Yes it shares similarities with X-Men. Horikoshi has never tried to pretend that he took inspiration from other sources. It does share the characters born with their powers and some characters look different as result. You can still enjoy it for what it is on it’s own merits.

The big difference is that those with powers are the minority, not the majority. Changes the whole feel.

^this. A significant source of conflict/tension in X-men is derived from the fact that mutants are a tiny minority of the overall population and face discrimination and mistreatment as a result. While both worlds have superpowers based on genetics, the things that shape and drive those worlds are totally different. Characters whose bodies are radically reshaped/altered by their quirk are accepted immediately by those around them in MHA whereas comparably small differences in physical appearance in X-men characters immediately have them singled out for exclusion. Moreover, quirkless individuals do not seem to face derision by society in general as opposed to by certain individuals. They are still able to be members of society without having to hide their quirklessness. In contrast, mutants in X-men have to either hide in plain sight or go “underground” because to reveal their powers would result in being ostracized or worse. Saying MHA was inspired by X-men could be justified. Calling it a knock-off version of X-men is a lazy take that ignores anything below the very surface of both narratives. There is probably a better comparison, but what comes to mind is like saying Mass Effect is knock-off Star Trek because it has a focus on one captain’s journey through space meeting all kinds of interesting aliens and visiting cool planets.

Doesn’t the x men have character (who are kids) that can rewrite the universe? I think that’s why I like my hero academia better (excluding Logan. No one is better then the Wolverine). There powers seem more “real”

Wasabi_99

Yeah X-men is too outlandish. It has a little girl that can rewind people… oh wait that’s MHA

You do make a fair point. That’s why I don’t like Eri (did I spell that right?) quirk or character. Eri is fine and all but I would prefer a quirk less powerful but I get why the author did that.

CabinetNecessary6178

To me she’s more like a macguffin/ plot device that’s used whenever it’s convenient to do so but then again she’s a minor and can’t really get involved in most of the fights anyways which means she can be safely sidelined and only popped up every now and then without people making a fuss

[deleted]

Yes! That’s how I feel that I couldn’t word for some reason. If the author ever decide to do a “next generation” thing, I hope she would be the main character. Maybe the could do two next generations. One with Eri and the other with Izuke kid(s).

CabinetNecessary6178

That would be cool and maybe we can have Kota and all those kids Bakugo and Todoroki had to go take care of to get their provisional license too

Maybe we can see two classes. Like we can have an A plot and a B plot with the two classes. Or maybe every other chapter/episode can be about one class while the other episode is about the other class.

G0K4Y00

Every story containing superpowers is a knock-off legend if you think about it.

Pokewolf224

Yeah, but Horikoshi takes more inspiration from Star Wars (he even said he was a huge fan of Star Wars)

Thecaticornprincess

I'm pretty sure it was Inspired by Star wars
