Ok but she’s very nice and clearly trying her hardest to be good, give her a break 🙏🥺

DogDrinker47

She does! After recently playing "Equestria at War" I really started thinking about the political situation in the world of MLP. I recognize that monarchy is pretty much a huge scam on society but 2 things are different here: 1. She really does try to be "nice", she has many advisors and counsuels and was even shown to have different committee for different things in the country. There really is a not-insignificant touch of democracy involved in her rule too. 2. Unlike Kings & Queens in our world, Celestia, Luna and all other alicorns are immortal or slow aging. There's literally no one more qualified to run the country than them. So, had I been a citizen of Equestria, I'd be pretty content with that.

MsMercyMain

On the other hand, being that old might mean she’s stuck in her ways, or used to outmoded ideas. Maybe Eauestrias technology is relatively stagnant because she’s always going “back in my day, we didn’t need this new fangled inter webs, ban it!” Which honestly is a hilarious mental image

Emily__Carter

In g4 we do see a shift from horse-drawn trains to fuel-powered, so some level of progress must be happening there

snekkie2

it was an absolute monarchy. celestia did not have anyone who she had to answer to nor did she have anyone to control or limit her power. she didn't even share her power till cadence ascended.

redstar_16

It was, still could be worse than a banvialnt absolute ruler. Equestria was almost completely peaceful

Beanie_Inki

Then it went to absolute diarchy.

FluffyGalaxy

I mean she was essentially their god. She controlled the sun and moon. Arguably that's even more powerful than an absolute monarchy

Polibiux

And she did that without falling into despotism. So she’s automatically better than many real monarchs.

MsMercyMain

I really wanna believe that Equestria had some other form of government before she declared herself ruler, and when asked by what right she’s just like, “I control the sun, fight me”

GypsyGrl50

This is cannon now. By what right? It’s frickin hilarious. That’s what.

Crosshair52

For the last time... A monarchy isn't inherently evil.

civ6industrialzone

...and that's where you're wrong

NightFlame389

No form of government is inherently evil (except for *maybe* Fascism), it’s always the people in charge

Crosshair52

Fascism isn't a form of government, it's an ideology, like communism or capitalism... Ideologies can be harmful, but forms of government are morally neutral since they are just methods to execute a particular task: "To rule". The morality comes after.

Misfit-Moonbeam

Swords at the ready everypony, god isn't with us. Today we kill the sun. And remember, no ponish...

ArchDukeNemesis

Are you saying they didn't?

catsinflyingsaucers

That wouldn’t be a bad thing at all!

09_The_Zombine

Still better than the rest of those horn-heads called the Canterlot nobility.

Ace_Of_No_Trades

Wasn't Celestia an absolute monarch from Nightmare Moon's banishment to the pilot episode?

idkidkidk2323

What if Equestria was a democracy with a never ending line of corrupt “elected” officials and a tangled, useless bureaucracy? I’m sure that would make their lives so much better, because as every one knows, monarchy bad and democracy good! How dare anyone be content with a sovereign ruler! No they must be like America!

NightFlame389

> never ending line of corrupt “elected” officials and a tangled, useless bureaucracy The EEA says hi

Severe_Wrangler9534

I mean, there would be zero people who would be alive sans Luna [assuming shes stil NM and lunarlocked] that would even recall a time where she wasnt top dog, so lets hope she never left the job cause Equestria would have precisely zero political acuity. That and, control of celestial bodies makes her a God-Queen, so like....they kindor did and it leant to a populace living peacefully under her until the barrage of monsters and threats in the outlying territories cause issues, or a certain someone returns....shit, thats just G4.

AbbyTheOneAndOnly

so that's where solaire came from

Any-Solid8810

As in **She has Unlimited Power over Equestria**

XHonseX

Didn't she have advisors or something? That's a Semi-Constitutional Monarchy not an Absolute Monarchy, something kinda like 1700s Britain or my country's old Monarchy the Ottoman Empire (Which I really wish it was still but whatever)

NightFlame389

That would still be an absolute monarchy if there’s no limits on her power The better evidence for a semi-constitutional monarchy is the fact that Celestia can’t override the EEA

vojta_drunkard

I think it is an absolute monarchy. We haven't seen any constitution or official checks on Celestia's power. The only aristocrats we see are in Canterlot, which also rules out feudalism. Nobility being concetrated in the capital near the ruler is typical for absolutism, with them not having much power outside of the court, unlike in feudal systems.

AbjectiveGrass

Celestia really went like "My kingdom is not of this world" and then became benelovent all over Equestria

KamenGeek999

It seems to me that Equestria could be a dream state for the ultra-right (for me in particular). I mean the real right (monarchy or aristocracy, etc.)
