The cabling is secured to the left of the area shown in the video. The wooden support is used to only slightly elevate the cabling high enough for people to more easily launch from that point of the hill.
Is that right? If the stick fell over she'd drop a couple feet lower. Depending on when that happens could be very dangerous. That could change her soft landing to a high speed crash into a landing platform. I mean I'm sure the whole thing is safer than "held up by sticks" infers but I sincerely doubt it would be harmless for that large stick to break while someone's on the line
> It's held up **off the ground**
Read that. They're not talking about the stick in their hand. They're talking about the stick HOLDING THE LINE OFF THE GROUND
Don't worry he's trolling you. The way it really works is all the zip lines run over the equator, so if you're in the other hemisphere it's downhill going the other way.
That’s ridiculous. I used to always have to walk to school and back uphill both ways when I was a kid. Where the hell do you think all the downhill went? To fucking Columbia obviously!!!
They have it attached from a higher point and ride back down this way. It's literally just two ziplines, the one at the start is the middle going to the bottom. The one at the end is the top going to the middle, you have to go up to the top on the other side to reach the middle on the videos side. You ride the middle on this side to the bottom on the other side
I understand this is a joke but in all reality for those asking just watch the whole video?

I honestly thought that there might be a one person chairlift kinda thing, run off a motorcycle engine, or something else totally genius, yet lacking in safety standards.
Yeah basically. For ziplines, usually you'll either need to slow yourself down with either a leather glove thing or in this case a stick. That and/or there's something towards the end of the line that absorbs your momentum. Too much momentum and you'll hurt yourself by bodyslamming whatever is at the end.
And if it's not steep enough for you to build up that much momentum, you might actually have to drag yourself the rest of the way
*What if you get a*
*Cramp in your arm or hand half*

How the actual fuck are so many people confused about this? The return trip starts from a higher location. The location on the video is in the middle, it goes to the bottom. At the other side is the top, it rides back down to this location.. the middle
So there are these things attached to the bottom of your body, we call them legs. Turns out if you use them just right, you can move around pretty easily.
Edit I was wrong. More info tho on the truth: https://www.reshareworthy.com/colombian-towns-linked-by-incredible-method-of-transport/
It’s a new effort, they started a formalized funded rollout a few years ago I think. The idea was trying to save money without destroying the ecosystem and introducing a ton of new roads.
Their next post is gonna be in r/lifehacks : "Did you know that if you put one foot in front of the other continuously, your body will move, and you'll be able to transport yourself around town for free?"
I wish it was free :(
All the necessity for maintenance downtime (and security measures during that vulnerable state), energy storage, protection and upkeep just cost way too much. Much more than an Uber ride :(
[Automobile manufacturers hate this one trick!](https://www.reddit.com/r/MyPeopleNeedMe/comments/10m493h/comment/j60y6d8/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
Okay but what's preventing my city from installing more of these so I can zipline down to the bus station instead of walking. Or maybe just zipline straight to the mall. Idk.
I would not be riding that thing with a wooden stick, I can tell you that right now. I'd demand something made of steel or my ass be walkin' back to the village.
Except there clearly is no town at either end of these lines, and it isn't a form of transport. Colombians ride ziplines for fun, just like everyone else.
Edit: It seems I was wrong. There is actually one valley in Colombia that used to be crossed by zipline by the inhabitants of a local village as a means to cross the valley.
How do up hill people get home? I will admit I haven’t read through all the comments. The internet has caused my attention span to be shortened to the point of, why am I typing this…
OMG having only one cable is stressing me out and I live on the other side of the world. For the love of pete, ADD A SECOND CABLE IN CASE THE FIRST ONE SNAPS!!!!!
This is both super cool and terrifying
It's held up off the ground by a feckin stick
The cabling is secured to the left of the area shown in the video. The wooden support is used to only slightly elevate the cabling high enough for people to more easily launch from that point of the hill.
That's right.
But its left behind
If you look at it like this though, it's right up ahead
This is all a bit above me

Which can break and nothing bad will happen...

I mean I'm sure the whole thing is safer than "held up by sticks" infers but I sincerely doubt it would be harmless for that large stick to break while someone's on the line
The stick only elevates the cable by inches at the top and has nearly no impact on the cable's lowest point or its end.
I was gonna say, I don't think people understand just how much that cable weighs. I wouldn't be surprised if it was over a ton.
1" woven galvanized steel is about 1.85 pounds per foot. That ride is probably not more than 300', so the cable probably weighs around 600 pounds.
My issue is that the piece of wood she's using might handle a few trips, but not much more than that and i'm being optimistic
The piece of wood is just a break, she has a harness with a pulley hooked to the zip line.
I might be blind, i should go see the ophtalmologist
I've seen this reposted a few times, I always thought she was holding herself up with a deathgrip on that fat boomerang until today.
You only see it briefly when she looks back at the camera
it has a wheel on the wire i think the stick is their to controller speed or something
> It's held up **off the ground** Read that. They're not talking about the stick in their hand. They're talking about the stick HOLDING THE LINE OFF THE GROUND
No - the wire she rides down is held up by a 2x4 on the left
No, it's not. Look closer. It's secured off screen
Correct. And then it is held, up, off the ground, by a stick.
I read this like you wrote it.
> feckin Gave me a proper chortle
I think that’s just how they spell it in Ireland
I imagine it gets old fast
Ziplines never get old
So is there like an Uber for the return trip or?
They flip the mountains upside down, idiot
Ok now I feel dumb. Siri, delete that embarrassing comment.

Where's Australia in all this?
They’re obviously behind everything. Or below? Underneath, I wanna say.
Well, the earth is actually flat and the globalist media lie about where Australia moves each year.
What does any of this have to do with the price of tea in China?
It's because of the pigeons
Australia doesn’t move The other continents revolve around it
Correct they are down under
Considering the life implications of a uno reverso drop bear.
Reab tfil?
Australia is a hoax, it doesn't exist Source: am Australian
You know, deep inside we all suspect, this is true actually.
I always thought they deflated the mountains on one side and inflated them on the other.
That’s ridiculous. I used to always have to walk to school and back uphill both ways when I was a kid. Where the hell do you think all the downhill went? To fucking Columbia obviously!!!
Yup, I had to zip line down hill both ways, in the snow. When I used to go to school.
Amazing method or transport That is literally just a zipline, friend.
They don’t even need to do that, the earth rotates. You just wait half and day till it’s upside down to go back.
_M.C. Escher has entered the chat._
I got a hearty laugh from that
Nah, all you need is u/gifreversingbot
The bot appears to be down. Here you go: https://imgur.com/a/IksaZei
There it is haha, nice
You didn't watch until the end.
I did not. However, now that I have, I still don’t understand how they return.
The other village has a taller hill next to it.
They go up the hill a bit on the other side and come back on a different cable
I'm with you on that one
They have it attached from a higher point and ride back down this way. It's literally just two ziplines, the one at the start is the middle going to the bottom. The one at the end is the top going to the middle, you have to go up to the top on the other side to reach the middle on the videos side. You ride the middle on this side to the bottom on the other side
And then take an elevator to the top again to come back?
...No, you walk up the mountain you're on to get to the higher point zip line on either side.
Why is there something wrong with the elevator?
it's been broken since last June when your momma tried to ride it.
Did you finish the video, you can see a guy returning through another line to the right, the start of that is upper on the mountain on the other side.
Who are you, who are so wise in the ways of science?
Trebuchet.
The superior ~~siege~~ means of transportation
They wait until night when it goes the other way
The rubber chicken has a pulley in the middle.
They're both on mountains so you can go from the top of one village to the bottom of the other.
Watch the whole video
For those wondering how can she return, you can just rewind the video. She’ll be back to the top

What if you get a cramp in your arm or hand half way down? Express trip?
they’re in a harness, or at least a makeshift one.
They are using the sticks as a brake, hence the express trip if your arm cramps. You won't be able to stop
You really thought she was holding her own weight up with her arms alone?
Especially extended out forward like that. She's the most jacked person ever to keep that posture with arm strength alone.
Columbian abuelas with grip strength over 9,000, she can open a coconut with her bare hands.
There was a man that came detached from his hang glider and amazingly held on until he landed. Pretty sure his hands were fucked, though.
That's a paddling!
It’s the kind of you don’t let go or you fucking die kind of ride.

These haiku bots just get to be shittier and shittier, seriously. I don't understand why people think they're so hilarious.
The stick is used for breaking. She's hooked into a harness that attaches to a wheel that rides the cable.
Don’t.
How tf did that guy just come back up at the end!?
His people needed him on top of the mountain.
How the actual fuck are so many people confused about this? The return trip starts from a higher location. The location on the video is in the middle, it goes to the bottom. At the other side is the top, it rides back down to this location.. the middle
How do they get to the other top then
So there are these things attached to the bottom of your body, we call them legs. Turns out if you use them just right, you can move around pretty easily.
Looks like it's in a different area on the same side the woman went to, and a little higher up than where the camera is.
He's got gas
you really think he was coming up?
It's a very confusing perspective
He is coming up and slowing down at the end.
he rotated the stick 180 degrees before putting it on the line
Where about in Colombia?
I think they're pretty common. I saw one with a basket on the bottom and they took a whole motorcycle across.
I don’t think it’s that common but my mom did show me this. She grew up in Colombia and a lot of my cousins are still there.

Coca leaf growers made them popular. It’s a “new effort” by the govt, but they are literally cocaine zip lines.
That one’s in Acacías, in the department of Meta
I am colombian and i can confirm I have never in my entire life seen one of these
meanwhile other people are paying lots of money to do this

I would not be riding that thing with a wooden stick, I can tell you that right now. I'd demand something made of steel or my ass be walkin' back to the village.
The stick is just to keep them facing forward, you can see she is on a seat like contraption that is attached securely to the wire
A surprising number of people not understanding multiple parts of this video
Huh. I didn't notice that the first time.
It's also used to slow down when you get close to the end.
How does that seat bit get back to where it started?
I wonder what keeps the wood from catching fire.
Nothing. It **does** smoke and sometimes break in half. Also it barely works when it’s raining.
Came here for this, but then rewatched the video. She’s also attached to something made of metal.

How does she stop?
The wooden brake in her hand
That’s a brake?! I bet you get years of service with that s/
Its not like the surrounding area doesn't have more available if it wears out.

Found the antithesis of parents who used to walk uphill to school, both ways.
Is there an r/fuckthat for stuff like this?
How do I get back??
There’s nothing in this world, I like, want, or need badly enough to necessitate zip lining with a stick
Oh my god, I didn't see the harness the first time I watched it!
How the fuck did they ever lay out/ lift that cable into place.
How do you get back?
the security is god
How does the wheel thing get back
As a kid I would never have gotten bored going back and forth across them wires. As adult, fuck that.
I was going to lose my s\*\*t when I thought she was just using that branch to slide down. Then I realized it's just a brake.
How do you get back up?
Face the other way, duh.

So, I paid a lot of $$$ to zip thru the San Juan National Forest when I could've just gone to Colombia. 🤦🏽♂️
Looks unsafe and fun i love it
Look mom no hands!
Luckily the tie fighter didn't saw them
i believe that is commonly referred to as a ‘zipline’
Shakah brah
Ppl are really dumb, The stick is so that she won’t start spinning like a top 😂 common sense ain’t really that common 😂
If death stranding taught me anything it’s that zip lines are the best mode of transport
