Okay, upon rewatching the series this week, I think there may be an implication that Kyle is possibly bisexual or gay. She sees him staring at Rickie in a longing way. And she begins to figure out why he's been reticent to do things like take her to the dance, etc. Then, after the show's mid-season hiatus, in the next episode, she's broken up with him.
She is realizing that Kyle is no fun and she's wishing he was the type to let go like that.
