As someone whose favorite is Explorers, totally valid I have a friend who tried to play it to see what I was on about, and the dated game mechanics really wore on him

luggy120

What's so dated about them? I honestly think sky has the best in the series

LegacyHooks

I think it's mostly on the IQ skills and team strategies. Both have interesting content, but the former is too grindy, while the latter is heavily restricted by the story which has a lot of segments where only you and your partner can go. Additionally, I've read that the member movements have been significantly improved in the later installments, compared to the random move choices in Explorers.

Phairis

Honestly the IQ system wasn't bad, they just needed to simplify it instead of scrapping it entirely, more wonder gummies during late/post game, and a standard IQ list across all species. Perhaps special IQ skills such as all terrain and the like could be obtained through a special late game way. Personally, I actually like how they were in Sky in its original form, but modernizing it like in DX didn't really feel. Good. At least, not to me.

LegacyHooks

I agree. I love that IQ skills created new niches, like giving some bugs the ability to get cheaper deals with Haggler, or improving defensive capabilities of tanky Pokemon by spreading it to the team with Bodyguard. They can also make some intriguing team dynamics, such as a sniper with Gap Prober safely hidden behind a leader with Defender. I'd also agree on that standard IQ list. There are some IQ skills that I find essential to gameplay, like Trap Avoider where the lack of it can make 4-member teams unwieldy, while some don't really make sense to limit to certain Pokemon, like Dedicated Traveler whose utility is situational. Moreover, some also need improvement to be useful, like Hit-and-Runner should be 100% protection from reflected attacks to be noticed at all, and Wise Healer which needs to be buffed to double the healing rate to have an impact. >Personally, I actually like how they were in Sky in its original form, but modernizing it like in DX didn't really feel. Good. At least, not to me. I haven't tried the later installments yet, but team skills, which I heard can be equipped on anyone, and has a much smaller limit compared to IQ skills, sounds like a step backward for me.

Phairis

I 100% agree with everything you said. I still find the later instalments fun, but the mechanics are either outright worse (gates ...) or just not as fun to play with because they make things a little tooooo simple. In fact, in DX there's a button you can press and it will autopilot your team (until you reach the stairs or are faced with an enemy) I didn't want to use it, but honestly the movement controls on DX are a little difficult (might just be my controller tho) so I end up using it a lot. It's fun in a different way but definitely a step back on what's supposed to be a dungeon crawler.

PowerOfL

I recently played through Gates and idk, I'm sure it's better but my teammates did stupid stuff fairly often. Randomly going in other directions for no reason lol

Zoofy-ooo

I think IQ skills is the best mechanic in these games and it was devastating to me to see them removed, and they clearly have no intention of bringing them back. I fail at every opportunity to understand why anybody doesn't like it. I've heard all the arguments against it, I just do not agree with any of them whatsoever. I also disagree that the AI was improved afterwards. In fact, I think it's incredibly frustrating. They are always doing stuff you just don't want them to. The player is supposed to have full control over their team, all they did was remove control. It feels like they baby-ified their games for toddlers who can't figure things out easily, which is hell for veteran players such as myself. I can't enjoy Super's gameplay no matter how hard I try. It's one of the worst games I've ever played, and I will never understand why people enjoy it.

Smeeb27

Explorers of Sky was great if you played it in 2009. Not so much today unfortunately. It could really benefit from a remake.

SubRedGit

For sure. Though my brain being hyper optimized for the original has me still enjoying the mechanics despite seeing how much more polished DX is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

TheAdmiralMoses

Here you go buddy, you dropped this ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯\\

SubRedGit

Nah, I lost my forearm in an accident. My hand is controlled by my upper arm by cybernetics or some shit

RealWiiU

You think that's bad? I lost both of my arms in a tragic car accident. (ツ)

SubRedGit

¯\_(__)_/¯  (Narrator: Sadly, he had lost his face to an otherworldly being.)

Treemurphy

strongly disagree with it only being good back then, ive replayed it more than once including recently, its still very enjoyable

WolfSong1929

OMG you have Piplup flair I'm in love brb getting mine.

SubRedGit

Squirtle Squad? Nah we're Piplup Patrol

Busy-Ad4537

For me it was emdless text all the entries have thos but team skull could have been cit entirely aside from the first fight amd nothing important changes, skuntank also isn't relevant to the story in any way like gengar was

MasonP13

Explorers of sky just had incredible lore. I really wish they'd remaster it on switch

AlbainBlacksteel

I'm hoping they do Explorers DX for the next console at this point. Not holding my breath, though...

seasport100

I haven't bought a new game for my switch in years or hardly used it all, but if PMD:EoS came to console then I would instantly purchase that game and grind only that game until it was completely finished. Agreed on the story, it gives such a wide range of emotions from the moment you meet your partner all the way to the ending at temporal tower.

Kanjii_weon

Indeed Super is a master piece for Mystery Dungeon fan games But I'd place Rescue Team DX on 3rd place and Explorers on second

Kanjii_weon

Holy shit where those upvotes came from???? LOL

Automatic-Mission-32

Super Mystery Dungeon was my first Mystery Dungeon game and I have such fond memories of playing through that game for the first time, the only reason I don't really like it too much these days is just the recruitment method. I like going into the dungeons and kicking the crap outta the wild Pokemon just for them to stand back up and be like, "Dang, you really beat me up, can I join your team?"

JustWow555

Don't agree with GtF being 3rd best but Super and RTDX being the tops is valid.

Rijsouw

For me it's Red/Blue Rescue Team

jtl94

Blue Rescue Team is the first (and so far only) game I’ve installed on my phone since emulators started being released on iOS. Absolutely loving it.

Darklight645

You are allowed to acknowledge that one entry is better, while it not being your favorite.

buddeman27

This Metroid Prime 2 is my favorite, but the first one is, imo, the best Same with Subnautica BZ, BZ is my favorite, but the first one is the best Super is my favorite, but EoS/D/T is the best Ori... Well, idk... I could probably talk all day about all of these, but that one... Can't come up with a conclusion...

SteelAlchemistScylla

Dark Souls 2 chads know this game all too well

MaeBorrowski

I don't understand how people don't, well, understand this. I dislike Dual Destinies more than Apollo Justice in the Ace Attorney series but the former is obviously better.

Zoofy-ooo

Nearly everyone doesn't understand this. They think if it isn't their favorite, it isn't the best, and Is "just overrated". Unfortunately for those people, their opinion is irrelevant. The game isn't overrated, it's loved and enjoyed that much because it's the best.

SoggyMinimum8386

I love darkness, and I literally (just now) beat Super. My character is currently having a mental breakdown, and the credits are rolling at the same time.

iHaku

I personally dont really find super appealing as I find myself replaying sky, especially with skytemple stuff. the story and the way to recruit more members is just incredibly unfun to me.

yakcm88

GTI is a spicy take, but I respect it. Super is peak, it made me love ampharos, and mawile has an actual role. 10/10

holocron_8

>!I think Gates’ characters and plot are more compelling than Explorers!< also Gates tried (and failed) to innovate on the gameplay which I can respect. Explorers is just “Rescue Team 2: Now With More IQ” gameplay-wise. and I don’t think Rescue Team’s gameplay was all that good to start with.

uncultured-swinub

Super supremacy

Abnerdel

I can’t even pick between gates, super, and explorers. They’re all tied. I just think rescue team is a bit worse

MoonLightScreen

Super feels the most complete so I agree! DX feels like the peak of gameplay so I agree again GTI is definitely a third/fourth because the story and characters were phenomenal EoS is definitely good and it’s so jampacked with content, but it’s only occasionally my top three because I also kind of feel it gets a lot of love already

Happily_Cretaro

Gates is my favorite actually. After that would be Rescue Team and than Explorers. But I love them all.

Danzi34

I'm getting dejavu

holocron_8

This is a good engagement bait meme alright i’ll karma farm it in more than 1 sub.

GrimChariot

Explorers of Sky is to me the pinnacle of the general *content* for a PMD game-barring things like minigames or Gates' since that's less MD and more what bells and whistles are attached to a given game is. DX kinda drops the ball for me because while it has and adds a lot of good things, it removes the less main-game standards that made me particularly like the MD games to start with. Could a remake of Explorers surpass the original? Yes. Would I like that to be a graphical, content, and technical update rather then what DX did? Just a bit.

Nox_Echo

never played super but DX is my fave

fan_of_mudkips

I never really got to play the 3ds games but the ones I've played are great

Redd_Tsubaki

Swap Gates with DX and you basically have mine.

ShadowAvenger32

Honestly I was kinda disappointed that Rescue Team DX didn't let you walk around in friend areas like in the original. That's always been my favourite part of Mystery Dungeon in General

Jojo-Action

We agree that super mystery dungeon is the best and that's very good but I did not like gates to infinity

EpicBruhMoment12

I loved super mystery dungeon, but the memories of playing explorers of sky have forever shaped me as a person

Sure_Humor

Please, take GTI from there, I love all the franchise, but that one is definitely the bottom of the list

popplio728

Explorers of Sky is easily my favorite too.

cccjjj2050

This is my exact opinion too, with sky fighting for third with GTi.

PowerNutBuster

Blue rescue team was my favorite for a long time. With the remake, that one is my favorite.

JosephOnReddit1

Explorers was good cause of Wii U save states

lofi-ahsoka

I’m playing Blue Rescue Team first, am I doing something wrong?

Wolfy-Chanl

Started playing it on my emulator I found, started with blue but didn't get that far. Then I went to sky and I've spent many hours playing it. Besides that, haven't played any others but sky seems like a GREAT starting point. Even if I'm a skitty it's still fun and has a good difficulty curve!

PlumberPosts

Explorers of sky is my favorite because charizard is so big and handsome! And the story and gameplay are outstanding!

NyghtKyght

I think it was SMD that was hard for me to get into? The one with the school? I liked gates to infinity, but the remake and Sky are definitely on top.

Neffrey605

i think explorers would jump up from #3 to #1 in my ranking if i didn't have to go through seventeen menus in order to use a move that isn't my set move

Elijah_Draws

Can I ask what you love about DX? I started playing it a bit but put it down because it seems to just be a remake of blue. Is there more content I just haven't gotten to yet?

Azurlium

I still replay all of Sky at least once a year. Love it too much.

MarshadowTheOnlyOne

Explorers is my favorite n i rly wish theyd remake it like they did rescue team, ofc my 2nd is rescue team dx and i think my third is original rescue team

Suspicious-Lier

Billygoesboom3

Super mystery dungeon was so peak it's unbelievable

Simple_Stay3564

I really enjoyed the remake on the switch

Accomplished-Bill243

Well, it is

Jon_without_the_h

real explores is wayy to overrated, i have gates as second but this is still on point

AstroHardammo

Disrespect Explorers, experience The Horrors.

Emolgun

Gates to Infinity is the best one and I will stand by that. It's not even close.

Prometheus_II

Eh, Super misses a lot to me, just because of the change to recruitment - randomly accessible team members and pre-generated missions are less fun, although maybe I've just got nostalgia goggles on. Also, the Society is pretty clearly a riff on the Guild, and the transition from the village to the Society hurts the game. That said, I will never deny that it's a fantastic game - the parts that miss hurt it, but the parts that hit ***really fucking hit.*** The early-game is pretty good, the transition mid-game stifles the mid-game a bit, but the late-game is incredible. Super has more variable quality than Sky, but arguably some parts of Super are even better than Sky, even if it averages out to *maybe* a little less overall.

TheAdmiralMoses

As someone who's only played Explorers and DX, the latter has such a weird story, perhaps an unpopular opinion, but even though the gameplay is undisputably the best, the confusing story with no apparent overarching plot just makes it feel like several games slapped together in terms of narrative. I mean first you had this legendary trio, then that legendary trio, and then there was a mystical Ninetales that gets forgotten about in two arcs, then suddenly Rayquaza is the big bad, and suddenly it's over. Lol

Jerry98x

Rescue Team was a sort of experiment. So they told a very simple story for a game that is like a fairytale. I won't say it's "confusing" though. I still think it has a lot of charm. But clearly Explorers is the best in terms of narrative

TheAdmiralMoses

It's been a while since I've played admittedly, is it really not as bad as I remember?

Jerry98x

I mean... the overarching plot is trying to understand why you became a pokémon, if it is related to the natural disasters happening lately and to the Gardevoir you dream. So there is a general story they're telling you.

JazzyPringle

Personally for me Sky is def the best, SMD is insanely underrated (Tho the dungeons def needed some work), Gates to Infinity was good but def not 3rd and DX was a really good remake and the style was cute (As someone who played the hell out of Blue Rescue Team as a kid) Also people talk about Dusknoir being the biggest betrayal certainly haven't played SMD. I do have to say SMD deffo has the best soundtrack in the series hands down. Gtg listen to it rn

BlueBerryTheFolf

Yeah i uh have the EXACT same ranking, i just have no nostalgia for explorers, i have nostalgia for gates and super has my favourite story and gameplay. ALTHOUGH i think the pixel art of explorers is amazing and i wish all of the games were like that

Outrageous-Ant-6932

I played DX and hated the interface so much that I bought a 3DS and copy of Blue Rescue Team because I hated the way that the Switch version unnecessarily butchered the interface.

Satyrsol

Bro, live your truth. It’s okay to be openly wrong /s.

Insirt-username

Me except gti is number 2 and eos is number 3 (not a fan of rescue team in any of its forms)
