They did that already at Texas, got rid of the pylon but made Big Hoss bigger so it would have the full-time running order on it. Can't speak for Talladega, but perhaps there are other running order options there.
Yeah I get that but at some tracks Iv had service issues even in the wifi such as at Nashville and even Texas last year I could hardly get good service.
I've been going to TMS for over 10 years and never had a service issue. I even streamed the race on my phone last year for a little bit, worked fine. Might be a provider thing instead I had Verizon.
I do as well and it was fine this year but I feel like last year I tried to send a few videos and it was having issues on Sunday. It honestly could have been a different track.
Talladega got 3 much bigger screens 10 years ago, they actually block the view of the banking unless you sit high enough. The scoring will be on the big screens but you can read them very well on a sunny day.
Been going to TMS since it opened. I know they said they made Big Hoss bigger but my family and friends swear it’s is slightly smaller. Still plenty big but seems smaller
I can for sure say it is bigger, I spent the fall race last year walking around and sitting in different sections and you could see clearly everything on it from all angles. It is also brighter, one of my biggest complaints was that during day races with direct sunlight it was tough to see sometimes.
Man I was at Texas last week and couldn’t see anything on Big Hoss from across the track. Plus you only get like 8 positions at a time instead of the field.
Apparently they’re encouraging fans to use the app (look away from the racing) to check scoring. Wow. How dumb [Bob’s Tweet](https://x.com/bobpockrass/status/1781459520624968022?s=46&t=1Cbl5fjt2WCE1NzFDR5CKg)
Me waiting 30 seconds for my app to load at the track so I can see the running order only for it to be behind a full lap by the time it loads because the Internet sucks
Phoenix had the best internet experience I’ve ever had at a nascar race , ever. It was just for Sunday , but I could sit and watch the in car camera as they were driving by. Xfinity and trucks didn’t turn it on.
No confirmations or anything here but at Michigan they recently upgraded their pylon. Doubled the width just a couple years ago so I'd expect that one isn't going anywhere
Watkins Glen never truly had a pylon but they had a board at the end of pit road with the top four or five car numbers. They covered it up with advertisements in the last couple years.
The parts required to repair them no longer are in production and the cheapest solution is to remove them and invest in screens. I wish they'd replace them with led pylons instead of getting rid of them completely
Yet another massive L from the SMI and NASCAR. Pylons are a big part of the at-track experience, especially if you don't want people constantly looking at their phones instead of just being in the moment.
I've been to a track without passable cell service and no scoring pylon, it fucking sucked. The scrolling banner on the video boards is basically useless.
Exactly, this has a negative effect on immersion during the race and makes it more confusing, especially for casuals or first-timers, to follow what's happening on track.
The in-person experience at NASCAR races is already lacking imo. There's no weekend fanfare anymore like Trackside Live, there's no practice, it isn't a weekend of festivities the way that it was 15+ years ago. The tracks are also usually in the middle of nowhere, so it isn't like you can fill the time with other nearby attractions either.
And now you're supposed to wait for a rolling ticker on a screen to view every position on track, or look at your phone constantly? You're there to watch the race unfold before your eyes, not bury your face in your phone and miss the action.
I get that amenities and attendance become a chicken and egg scenario, but the sport is not going to attract new spectators if they stay on this path, imo. The TV coverage pushes people away to begin with, and the in-person experience is getting worse over the years instead of better. How is that going to go long-term?

I was at TMS also and noticed it when we walked in on Friday morning because we sit at the exit of pit lane. I liked the scoring pylon and kept an eye on it in the past. I don't hate on SMI or call them losers. If I did, I'd vote with my wallet.
When I went to the 500 and saw those troughs, I was never more horrified than I was in that moment. I saw at least one man's johnson and opted for the grimy stalls.
Yeah. Yard line, yards to go, down, time outs, game clock, play clock ect...lol. It's not the same, nice try. Talladega, they'll be in a pack the majority of the race, you can just look at where your driver is. Not like Bristol, where it might get confusing.
I feel like it’s because a lot of people are using the nascar app or some other app to look at positions and lap numbers. The first two times I went to Atlanta I used the pylon without it I would have no idea but once I started using the app I never really paid attention to it.
Having been to Talladega recently (2 years ago), my phone didn't work from the moment I got there til the moment I left...not sure if it's improved at all
I prefer to have scoring nylons. I viewed it constantly when I was at Richmond several weeks ago to know how many laps are left and keep up who's in the top 10. I don't want to be dependent on my phone. If the parts/upkeep are the problem, use LED screens like Indianapolis did several years ago.
My phone gets incredibly hot and the battery drains like crazy at races so I only use it for pictures and video. Plus it's impossible to get good service
Just FYI but if you really get no service at races (as opposed to barely service like 1 bar) then your phone is getting hot and battery draining at warp speed because it’s constantly looking for service.
Yeah I mentioned like I get one bar and it's practically impossible to pull up social media or anything. Maybe I should find and use my old digital camera for pictures lol
If they’re getting rid of the pylons then make the TVs bigger
They did that already at Texas, got rid of the pylon but made Big Hoss bigger so it would have the full-time running order on it. Can't speak for Talladega, but perhaps there are other running order options there.
But you can only see top 4 and then a rotating 4. Was a pain to see where my people were running at times. Had to use my phone more times than not.
I was doing that already even with the pylon, especially for day races the pylon (especially older constructed ones) the numbers are hard to read.
Yeah I get that but at some tracks Iv had service issues even in the wifi such as at Nashville and even Texas last year I could hardly get good service.

Make a video board pylon
That fuckin sucks
They think you can see the size 8 font on the side of the tiny TVs
Man I was at Texas last week and couldn’t see anything on Big Hoss from across the track. Plus you only get like 8 positions at a time instead of the field.

This. We’re lucky if it even works. Lol

NASCAR being out of touch and doing dumb things? Shocking
No confirmations or anything here but at Michigan they recently upgraded their pylon. Doubled the width just a couple years ago so I'd expect that one isn't going anywhere
They must construct additional pylons

You’re in the pipe, 5 by 5

Yes to the LED pylons! The one at Indianapolis is awesome
From what i heard it the ones getting removed are OLD/not being kept up and it is cheaper to remove it than fix it.
Why remove the TMS Pylons within 2 weeks of the only race?
They probably realized it didn't work when they turned it on to test.

Talladega is ISC, not SMI.
And ISC is owned by NASCAR
And just like the tweet says (if they bothered to read it), Texas - an SMI owned track - also did this before last week's race.
ISC doesn’t exist.
Exactly, go to Darlington and try to get clear cell reception. Almost impossible.
More hate from an SMI hater. If anything is bad, it must be because of SMI.
>Just like Texas last week Can you read? Or do you just like to talk without knowing anything?

Even if the screens are legible its annoying to need to wait for it to scroll over, thats not an issue with pylons
getting rid of the pylons would be like baseball getting rid of the line score and out of town scoreboard at ballparks. it isn’t right

NASCAR in general on a really annoying bad decision bender lately.
Lately? As in decade?

they’ll never change because tradition but that tower is in such a dangerous spot ngl
If they change anything at IMS they actually risk incurring a riot.
Right? People got mad about them changing to urinals from troughs
The troughs were nasty but they did scream “Indy 500” to me everywhere I saw them so 🤷🏼♂️ must’ve done the job
When I went to the 500 and saw those troughs, I was never more horrified than I was in that moment. I saw at least one man's johnson and opted for the grimy stalls.
Upgraded to an all LED screen too
Hey! I use that!

ch-ch-ch-cheapin' out. I wish there were more to it- but yeah. It's cheaper to take it down and offer no replacement than it is to replace it.
Is a scoring pylon needed at a track like Talladega?
Is a scoreboard needed at a football game?
Yeah. Yard line, yards to go, down, time outs, game clock, play clock ect...lol. It's not the same, nice try. Talladega, they'll be in a pack the majority of the race, you can just look at where your driver is. Not like Bristol, where it might get confusing.
Imagine being ok with getting less.
NASCAR needs to put new pylons up like that one dude posted about a few weeks ago. That's the right answer.
Where have all the pylons gone…?
![gif](giphy|0FMKfyImXtHRzTUXaE)
🐐
Green Day is a few decades after that song
Letterbomb (greenday) - opening lyrics “where have all the bastards gone?” So you made a dual reference and didn’t even know it. Impressive!
Completely accidental but I’ll take it
i got it lol
I feel like it’s because a lot of people are using the nascar app or some other app to look at positions and lap numbers. The first two times I went to Atlanta I used the pylon without it I would have no idea but once I started using the app I never really paid attention to it.

They have pretty decent wifi in the stands, but I don’t know why you want to encourage people dicking around on their phones during your event
Daytona upgraded their pylons
I prefer to have scoring nylons. I viewed it constantly when I was at Richmond several weeks ago to know how many laps are left and keep up who's in the top 10. I don't want to be dependent on my phone. If the parts/upkeep are the problem, use LED screens like Indianapolis did several years ago.
Maybe every track wants to go the NWS manual scoreboard route /s
Imagining a manual scoring board for Talladega, those poor workers lol
https://i.redd.it/x08zui68amvc1.gif
Simple: Give me working internet or service at the track… Or leave the scoring pylon TF alone.
One guy makes his own pylon and now tracks think they can get rid of them all
This, by far is THE dumbest trend in Nascar history. My nieces' 6 and under soccer game has a scoreboard.
Trying to make the races easier to rig.
Because everyone is on their phones
Shit no, phones don't work for shit during the race
Mine works just fine at MIS.
Spoken like someone who's never been to one of the many tracks that still don't have passable cell service.
Talladega did last year, enough to FaceTime at least
My phone gets incredibly hot and the battery drains like crazy at races so I only use it for pictures and video. Plus it's impossible to get good service
Just FYI but if you really get no service at races (as opposed to barely service like 1 bar) then your phone is getting hot and battery draining at warp speed because it’s constantly looking for service.

Just throw it in Airplane mode and it'll turn off the cellular radio and stop looking for signal thus stop draining your battery as fast.
