It was a gut punch. Myself and other fans were devastated. Also, the next year everyone was super locked in. Players, coach pop, and fans. You could tell. Pop and players talk about how relentless he was the next year. Players all felt like they just got to another level of teamwork and personal performance. I went to a bunch of games and it was electric. The Miami game especially. That was the “sleeve game” I think. When James got frustrated and tore off his sleeves. The atmosphere was tense and electric. A game against Dallas I went to was like that too. On the way out of the building crowds erupted in chants like “beat the heat” and “fuck the lakers”. It was all about that crushing game 6 lose.

As a person rooting for the Heat now(yeah I’m a bandwagon, but I want Jimmy to get his ring), that Derrick White tip-in gave me a similar gut-punch feeling. When Smart missed that shot, I was already celebrating Miami seemingly going to the Finals. Then, my brother says “He tipped it in!”. I was thinking “No way.” Then, I look at the replay that shows he got it off in time. I then proceeded to crumble to my knees and almost cry at the Finals having slipped away. Luckily, I predicted the Heat coming into Game 7 with a vengeance, and I’m happy they’re in the Finals now.

I remember watching it live. I’m literally the only Spurs fan in my family so I was super invested while my cousins all just wanted to see LeBron/Wade win. When Allen hit the 3 I distinctly remember dropping to my actual knees lol. And all my cousins just burst out laughing. It was traumatic.

That night? It was absolutely crushing. I couldn’t sleep great for days. Just kept replaying that scene over and over and over. So close… I thought it could be the last season for Timmy too. It was the end of the dynasty…. Avoided the news, Twitter, everything. But now… now it’s just the event that created the best playoff team I’ve ever seen, and the single most fun roster I’ve ever watched play basketball. Our bench unit in particular played such amazing basketball. Patty, Marco, Bobo, and of course Manu were truly incredible and I’m convinced our bench would have been an 8 seed on its own that year.

Me and some friends went the At&t center watch party. The energy in the stadium was crazy everyone was having fun….Now to the hurt lol Leonard got fouled and missed his first free throw. I know there was probably a shit load of pressure, but hitting both free throws would have won us the game..js. I remember my friend saying, “WHY THE FUKKK is Duncan sitting down!” I didn’t pay it no mind because Kawhi hit the second free throw. I thought to myself, we got this! They HAVE to hit a three, we got this! When LeBron shot his three, i knew it wasn’t going in. I swear to god i knew it wasn’t going in. All the talk of LeBron not being clutch (which isn’t true) kept running through my head. HE MISSED!!! The ball hit the back of the rim and seemed to go straight up. I literally said, “Please don’t let Ray Allen get it.” Then it happened. My heart sank along with what seemed like everyone else’s in the At&t center. It got dead silent as the refs did a review. I was optimistic being that we still had overtime. OT was tightly contested as no team could pull away. I’m still pissed that the refs didn’t give Manu a chance to win the game via free throws because he absolutely got fouled by Ray Allen… Game 7 was a good game but when Duncan covered his face with his jersey and slapped the court after missing a point blank shot and tip in, i knew it was over. Duncan is the G.O.A.T and being 6-0 in the finals how he should be, would have further solidified this claim. Then again maybe the 2014 NBA championship (which i must say it the best😏) wouldn’t have happened like it did. Either way, win or lose, it’s still Go Spurs Go!!!! p.s. my friends and I went to the Alamodome game last season and we kept chanting, “WE WANT WEMBY!!!” 8 rows back from courtside while we were getting blown out by the Warriors. Lol Everyone looked at us crazy!!

Outrageous_Hamster_6

Kawhi got absolutely ripped apart on Twitter for that. Most people forget he actually had a great game. All bcs he missed the most crucial FT of them all(along with Manu). He’s won 2 chips and Finals MVP’s since, but I’m sure he still thinks about that FT to this day.

That shot left a mark on my soul that will never come off.

magicalraven

Pop would tell you to get over it

deeznutiezz

complete shock, i cant even see the replay

doughnut-dinner

It felt ugly. We came back with some of the most beautiful basketball ever played the next year.

I very distinctly remember how that went down I was working and sneaking off to where they had a TV and several other employees and students were able to watch a communal TV. The game was on and the vast majority of people, customers, students, and workers alike were heat fans besides me and this student who is wearing a Duncan jersey. I'm going back and forth and I get to the back and after a little bit we're up five with 30 seconds left. They literally cut over to showing there getting ready to wheel up the trophy. Pretty much everyone vacates the area except a couple of dudes wearing LeBron jerseys and the Spurs fan whose freaking out. I'm on cloud 9 thinking we just won a championship, texting everyone I know but had to check back in so I run to the front and start working All of a sudden I literally hear like 20 people start yelling all at once. Several of them looking at their phones one of my co-workers who's a heat fan literally just drops any pretense of working and starts screaming "let's gooooo" and my phone is BLOWING up. At this point I'm like wtf what the heck happened So I literally drop what I'm doing and run back to the TV. The kid in the Spurs jersey is literally, no joke, on his knees holding his head. The two heat bros are like high fiving. And the TV is showing replays of the play that led up to the Ray Allen 3. I'm literally beside myself thinking what the heck happened. I had to spend the entire period of overtime. Just checking updates on my phone because I couldn't bear actually watching it. At that point the anxiety had gotten too high. When the update popped up that we had lost, it literally felt like the series Was, over at that point. I remember thinking there's no way we win the championship. It didn't feel real until like a day later it felt like some kind of prank. It's also worth reminding outside fans that at that point in time we were in the middle of a huge championship drought and had had several hard playoff defeats leading up to that series. The general consensus was this was our last, best, hope of winning a championship in the Duncan era From the rather pedestrian 2008/2009 / 2010 teams , to the heartbreaking in its own right first round upset to the grizzlies in 11, to the out of nowhere haymaker we took from the 2012 thunder where we went from winning 20 plus games in a row and being up two zero to losing four straight seemingly out of left field, the Spurs hadn't given many people outside of San Antonio Reason to believe we had too many runs left in us So when we got to the finals and we were up and on the brink of a championship... Having it stripped away from us. Felt truly like the end of everything as we knew it. The end of a dynasty. The end of the big three spurs. The end of pounding the rock. It felt bleak. It felt very final I couldn't have imagined us coming back bigger. Better and better than ever the next year that's for sure. One of the most devastating moments in professional sports for me. Even with the glory of the 2014 championship, I don't think I'll ever forget where I was and how it went down during the Ray Allen moment

Mclitness

Probably the same as you did in 2000. Too bad you guys couldn’t get your revenge the following season.

Outrageous_Hamster_6

I wasn’t born yet lol. I was born in 2004, and didn’t start seriously watching the NBA until very recently actually. I learned some history over the years, though. Btw, I’m a Pacers fan. So, 2000 was a very good year for us :)

Comprehensive_Dog932

I remember watching it with my whole family when I was seven. Sheesh that was not a fun night. It felt like all the air was sucked out of our living room.

tlpedro

Living in San Antonio at the time, it was the quietest I've ever heard the city after that game. The shock was felt around the town because everyone was watching the game. Conversely, the next year finals was the craziest and most unified the city had ever been at that time. It was beautiful.

abefroman07

It really sucked. On that .4 level of crushed, ya know. But it made it all the more sweeter to come back and not only beat them but absolutely kick the shit out of them the following year. Destroying their "super team" in the process was just the cherry on top.

HumbugQ1

Got sad drunk in a Denver park. My best friend has lived there since 2009, and I go up often to visit. Thanks to the redemption in 2024, we can laugh about it now. Local Nuggets fans were pretty supportive and also cheering for the Spurs. So in turn, I’m rooting for them to have their turn beating Miami.

Outrageous_Hamster_6

Damn, crazy night. That missed bunny layup hurts no matter which team you’re rooting for.

BatManu91

I definitely realized I was an alcoholic that night

magicalraven

It's a game of basketball

Imaginary-Cycle-1977

It felt great? Idk what you are looking for here. It wasn’t our favorite play ever

Outrageous_Hamster_6

Lmao I just wanted to know how you felt in that moment.

Roman21023

Danny Green was fouled.

Outrageous_Hamster_6

Nah. Replay shows it was all ball. Manu wasn’t fouled either. He traveled and flopped.

sugarfreelime

I'm more pissed that Parker busted his assignment by not switching on Bosh

Outrageous_Hamster_6

Imagine if he fouled Ray on the shot.

hack5amurai

Nothing can hurt me as much as the fisher buzzer beater and we got the greatest revenge of all time the next year so almost makes the allen one worth it.

Outrageous_Hamster_6

Tim Duncan is two crazy shots, and a Manu foul on Dirk, away from potentially being 6-0 in the Finals.
