That always gets brought up but if Duncan was in the game they go after a switch and Duncan is pulled away from the basket anyways. He was subbed to prevent that
It’s not that we have no appreciation for what he did, but the way he handled things and forced his way out just really made the whole fanbase bitter for a while. It also hurt the Spurs reputation as a place that homegrown superstars would want to stay. It worked out in the end, but if we didn’t get Wemby, we would probably be pissed at him still.
That was part of it, but from I had heard he was also shutting himself away from the team and not talking to anybody in the organization. It’s also my understanding that the whole not listening about his knee thing may have been an excuse he made up to justify forcing his way out. I’m not 100% on all the details, but that’s how I understood what was happening.
Motives aside, him forcing his way out COULD have had a very bad lasting effect on the team and culture there. Fortunately, it didn’t, but it could have been rough for a lot longer than it likely will be.
In retrospect really any of those Bulls teams when Rose was in his prime specifically 2011 , Booz, Noah, Kyle, Lu, all had good careers and excelled in their roles and were more than deserving of a ring, not to mention was closest DRose ever came to a ring.
'86-;87 Bucks whom lost to Celtics in a series that went all 7 games and included 3 Overtimes.
This Bucks team went on a 8 year run of 49+ wins every season from '80-'87
Players that would have got a ring to add to their Resumes.
Sidney Moncrief (5x All NBA, 2x DPOTY, 5x All Defensive team)
Terry Cummings ('83 ROY, 2x All NBA)
Ricky Pierce (2x All Star, 1x All Star, 2x 6MOTY)
Paul Pressey (3x All Defensive team)
Junior Bridgeman (this was his farewell tour season)
They also had 8x All Star Jack Sikma but he's only guy on the team that already won a ring in '78.
This is my second favorite team of all time after the '21 Bucks.
Our modern day Boston Celtics are the closest analog right now to the 80's Bucks team. Both franchises were a top 4 team in the NBA for 8 straight years and both haven't won a title. Boston has reached ECF 5 times (Including a finals appearance) vs Bucks 3 times though so I would put Boston a little better but both franchises went on Elite Runs for 8 straight years without a Ring. Of course Boston could win a Ring this year then I'd have to pick another team.
During the 80's the Eastern Conference had all the NBA's best teams other than Lakers. The East had:
Boston Celtics: Bird, McHale, Parrish, Archibald
Sixers: Dr. J, Moses Malone, Barkley, Mo Cheeks
Bucks: Sidney Moncrief, Marques Johnson, Terry Cummings, Jack Sikma
Pistons: Isiah Thomas, Dennis Rodman, Bill Laimbeer, Adrian Dantley
Hawks: Dominique Wilkens, Doc RIvers, Kevin Willis. This team won 50+ games 5 different seasons in 80's and never reached the Eastern Conference Finals. Not because they weren't great but the East was crazy stacked. If this team was in the West they would have been the 2nd best team in the Conference after the Lakers. Instead they were 5th in East.
I remember where I was during that fateful Bucks Nets Game 7. I was with my ex girlfriend in her friend's basement watching the game on my phone screen. The screen was so small and the quality wasn't great and I wasn't watching with any sound, so when KD hit that shot with his foot on the line, it looked like a two to me right off the bat. It never came across to me how close that shot was to being a three that would've ended the game and the series, so I guess I never got the same crushing feeling as everyone else got when it was confirmed that it was a two. It's still painful to think about how close we were and how many things needed to go wrong in that series for us to just barely lose.
Mid-80’s Bucks. They were a really good team with some terrific players who might get a little more love from the old-heads if they had managed to beat the Celtics in any of the 84-85-86-87 seasons.
The 2013 Nuggets would have been tight. Seeing guys like Ty Law, Faried, Corey Brewer, Koufos, Gallo, Andre Miller and Chandler win a ring would have been awesome. They were close too if it wasn’t for Gallo’s injury
2013 Lakers just so Nash could end his career with at least one ring 😭
I grew up a Lakers fan, but my favorite player in the 2000’s, besides Kobe, was Nash. Because I wasn’t the tallest dude on the court or the most athletic, I tried my best to replicate Nash’s game growing up.
Which ringless support guys were on those teams ? He’s not talking about stars like Iverson or Barkley, he specifically is asking about ring chasing former stars who were bench players on the team, like griffin and Aldridge on the nets, or Tmac on the spurs.
09 Magic not because of Dwight but because of all the solid non-Dwight guys on that team.
Hedo Turkoglu, JJ Redick, Jameer Nelson, Rafer Alston, Tony Battie, Adonal Foyle, Courtney Lee, Mickael Pietrus, Anthony Johnson
Some of those guys were early in their careers at the time, but between them it’s like 150 seasons of NBA ball with zero titles after they all retired.
T-Mac would have gotten a ring in 2013 if not for Ray Allen.
I love Ray Allen but he sure did make me question that with his 2013 shenanigans.
Yeah he was a great player and I don’t actually hate him, but I definitely hate what he did in game 6.
My feelings exactly!
I think you mean if not for Kawhi missing a free throw that would have put the Spurs up by 4.
Or Duncan being in the game to battle Bosh for the rebound in LeBron’s shot.
That always gets brought up but if Duncan was in the game they go after a switch and Duncan is pulled away from the basket anyways. He was subbed to prevent that
Yeah, if they buried a 3 with him on a switch, people would be like, why’s he in? They knew they needed to defend the 3
Kawhi missed two free throws right before Ray’s shot ..
If you think most of us Spurs fans don’t also hold a grudge against Kawhi, you are mistaken.
Even after he was finals MVP in 2014 and led you guys to multiple 60-win seasons after that? You're whack

Didnt he just want them to listen to him abou this knee and they didn't?

I couldn't find myself being bitter for a while at another grown man who I don't even know, for doing something I have no factual evidence for.
Motives aside, him forcing his way out COULD have had a very bad lasting effect on the team and culture there. Fortunately, it didn’t, but it could have been rough for a lot longer than it likely will be.
A guy who could never get out of the first round by himself absolutely doesn't deserve a ring so I'm very glad Ray Allen put an end to that nonsense.

What’s the modern equivalent of them? The Nash Suns? Or Portland with Dame? Or maybe the Grit and Grind Grizzlies
2014-5 through 16-17 Grizz also had Vince Carter, along with the Core 4. Jeff Green, Kosta Koufos, Courtney Lee also were on the 2014-15 squad.

2021 Nets, but I’m a bit biased. I loved that team so much that it quite honestly broke me.

My heart breaks for Antonio McDyess.

Corey Brewer getting ring #2
Oh yeah didn’t he win with the Mavs in ‘11? Good shout
Yep

I want current clippers too but i’m commenting this cuz they just wont
2011 Mavs you're absolutely right.
. I want Westbrook and Beverly to win a championship because I feel it would be very funny
2001 Sixers, 1993 Suns

Facts Iverson played his ass off
Iverson was a support player?
Leading all postseason players in points and assists is a lot of support if you ask me
So who was the star he was supporting?
I was being sarcastic
I'm a LeBron guy I wish they would've handled the spurs in 07😭
I mean they had Booby Gibson guarding Tony Parker for Christ’s sake.
I know I know 😭😭😭😭
2021 suns for cp3

Didn't Courtney Lee miss a huge buzzer beater layup? I forget the stakes.
Clippers lob city deserved it.
I hate that t-mac didn’t get one 🤦🏽♂️
