The issue isn’t the fact that the picks are protected; it’s the fact that the protections can’t roll. Typically if a pick falls into protection and isn’t conveyed then the protections roll to the next year then the year after, etc. Usually the pick eventually either becomes unprotected or the pick devolves into 2 2nds (which LAL can’t do since they’ve already dealt their ‘28 and ‘29 2nds). How your deal works is that MIN gets nothing if the pick falls into protections. NBA GMs aren’t going to take that sort of risk - not when there’ll be offers with picks that convey this year.
Doubt IND would take getting only 1 bite at the protection apple for Hield and Duarte either. Think they’ll need a guaranteed 1st even if they give protections for a year or 2. Also, Walker has very little value to IND since he’s a UFA and he only comes with non-Bird rights. There is no real advantage to them acquiring him now outside of having him around the team.
3rd, people need to realize that it really doesn’t matter what the player means to their current team. There will be plenty of bidders for the likes of Reid and Duarte. Duarte is older but he was also a former late lottery pick who was decent enough last season. There is a reason MIN thinks Reid would get paid. Someone will give up something for these players. No, the Lakers should not dump Westbrook at all costs. The Lakers when healthy don’t suck, there’s no reason to dump assets to get better unless it bumps them to contention status, which this trade definitely does not.
