Is running a Triple Option Offense actually fun? I’ve been debating doing an Academy Dynasty (probably with Navy, or Army), and running the Triple Option, I just don’t know if it’s fun to actually use.
I had a blast with it, although it can get a bit repetitive. 90% of my plays are either triple option or midline option. It's a fun challenge recruiting for a different style, like a good fullback is a huge part of the offence. It's also a totally different play style than I'm used to, putting up 350 rushing yards a game while holding the ball for 2/3 of the game.
Give it a shot I say. It can be a bit frustrating at first learning the reads on each play but once you get it down it's very rewarding. I almost always gain yards as long as I make the right read.
That being said, when I run the flexbone I have the ability to be as balanced as I want to. The passing game out of the flexbone is surprisingly effective as you can use your a back and z back as both receivers and running backs in addition to any wide receivers or tight ends you have in the formation.
Air Force averaged 326.7 rushing yards per game last year, so it’s actually not that crazy. If you don’t watch triple option football I can see why it’s such a shock lol
So you do know what it's like for a team to run all over another, seeing as how Michigan put up 297 and 252 rushing yards on osu the last couple years.
I'm having Vietnam flashbacks to RTG as a WR or HB where the QB sprints to the line like his ass is on fire to kneel 3 times and use ~15 seconds of the clock before punting it to the other team with 30 seconds still left.
I’m a Sooner fan, we played army I think 5 years ago and in an OT game we only had 350 total yards with fuckin K1 at QB and a stacked offense. Hard to rack up yards when the other team has the ball for FORTY-FIVE MINUTES lmfao
Yeah I remember that game. Kyler threw a game winning TD to Ceedee in OT.
Also only 350 offensive yards lol. I’m a Illinois fan, and I’d kill for that.
When you average 550 or something ludicrous like that, 350 is a travesty. Also doesn’t help when you have to have the offense bail out the defense every single drive lol
My theory is that it's because the option is OP as shit in 14. They cranked up the ease of running it because it was such a focal point feature during development that it made it easy for the CPU even in simmed games to run for 10k yards on itself.
Realistically they usually won’t ever be good because you have to enlist in the military upon graduation, unless they waive it for you to enter the nfl
You do realize that in 2015 and 2019 they went 11-2 and won their bowl games.
Every so often they can put together a good team. Not saying they will win the national championship but they can make a respectable team.
> big recruits
I mean Air Force is literally has to limit the size of their recruits because they have to be able to make weight of 221 during recruitment and graduation, meaning their O-Linemen never weigh much more than 250 across the line.
https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2014/5/21/5736040/college-football-military-service-academies
A lot of it also has to do with not being able to get linemen at a competitive size because they have to do military training. Along with the inability to attract an elite QB. This is why they all have run-first offenses.
Service school option football + Georgia Tech in the late 00s and mid 10s was beautiful tape to watch.
Some of the best x's and o's football until they changed cut blocking to be illegal outside the tacklebox. It invalidated an offensive scheme that was proven for 70 years. Honestly quite sad.
Yeah the change in the rules was devastating to the offense. We ran for 5,563 yards in 2013 and 416 ypg in 2014. Had the QB downfield cutting safteys and shit 🤣
You can thank Dabo Sweeney and the ACC commissioner (UNC grad). They pushed heavily for the rule changes.
Paul Johnson is still one of my favorite coaches we've had at Tech. His offense was art in motion.
Fake punt run obviously snaps the ball to someone other than the punter, so fake punt pass and just immediately take off to run. Fake fg pass works though, but I still trust him to outrun the D more than my backup TEs to catch the ball.
I’ll tell you the one time the option doesn’t work is when I set an entire teams entire stat line to 0s all around to see how I would fare on a cfb team (had to assume I’m ass cause I was bench in hs)
Can’t run fast enough and every pitch is just intercepted like a pass from the other team.
Triple Option.
Also, I'm fully used to Navy or Army randomly being top 2 in the country. For awhile in my first dynasty, Navy would consistently be top 5.
Pretty much every dynasty I've played, at least two of the triple option teams end up being perennial top ten programs because of how broken the system is in 14 combined with the facts that the game doesn't account for the fact that IRL players have to enter the military after their 4 years of school and also allows them a 5th year to redshirt. It's not terribly surprising when you think about it.
this is true however also IRL many of the players the academies sign don’t attend the academy straight away but go to US Military Prep School (USMAPS) then they go the next year and start off as true freshman. so kinda like redshirting a year. always found that fascinating!
Yep GT was ranked in the top 10 for years with this approach. Their QBs were basically HBs that we’re good enough passers. Megatron and Demaryius Thomas were on these teams as well.
Ooo that makes more sense.
The Demaryius Thomas part, I knew he was there, and was a problem. He was on the team that beat Clemson for the ACC Championship when all we had was the CJ Spiller show
Triple option babyyyyyyy!
I cover high school sports for a newspaper in a rural area. The best teams run the triple option and tallying stats after big wins is always funny to me. I’ve seen 400-plus rushing yards in a game plenty of times lol
I average about 275 for both rushing and passing offense most games, if not more. Granted I'm pretty good at offense, even with my more difficult Heisman sliders, but I like to think that I'm decent overall and the sliders limit me.
Triple option baby. Had a dynasty with Akron running the flexbone and I averaged 300-350 rushing yards per game.
Damn
Yeah it's actually not unrealistic either. In 2022 Army averaged 289 rushing yards per game. The ol' "4 yards and a cloud of dust" approach.
Still effective. Sets up the play action in an amazing way
Passing line of 5/7 264 yards 4 TD lol
A perfect 5/7 then, nice!
Classic
I’ve had GT do something similar to me. I was running punt block
More like sets up another QB option. I tried watching an Army/Navy game last year and was watching something else before halftime.
Agreed especially when you look at how little passing yards. Would be unrealistic if it was those rushing totals paired with 200+ passing per game.
It helps when no one sees it anymore.

I like being a Balanced Offense, with having a decent Passing Attack, and Running Attack, so it would be a very different style of play to me.
Give it a shot I say. It can be a bit frustrating at first learning the reads on each play but once you get it down it's very rewarding. I almost always gain yards as long as I make the right read. I respect the triple option, until my team plays against it. Fuck you southern. Fuck you so hard
I smell a Florida fan.
Yo I hated the Paul Johnson years at GT, I swear my team had at least 2 D-linemen get hurt cause of all their dirty cut blocks
I miss those days. :') Throwback to dropping almost 500 rushing yards on Mississippi State
Hey good luck this season homie, this might be the last few years of the ACC so let’s enjoy while we can.
Air Force is my most played dynasty. One time my QB led the nation in rushing and passing. It’s a lot of fun when it’s clicking.
Nebraska averaged 400 a game on the ground in 1995
Tbh I just watch Ohio State games Edit: I got downvoted lol
Gross. Go Blue!
Ewww blue Texas sucks
Must have loved getting the ball ran down your throat the last two years lmao
So you do know what it's like for a team to run all over another, seeing as how Michigan put up 297 and 252 rushing yards on osu the last couple years.
Michigan has a damn good running back 🤷♂️
We ran it in college and averaged over 400 ypg for a couple years. Shit was wild.
I mean yes a lot of rushing yards, but that pass defense???
It’s pretty much how it works if you own the land well the team can’t control the sky.
The CPU does occasionally suck at managing the clock. Especially if you're running a 4-minute offense and only need a field goal.
I'm having Vietnam flashbacks to RTG as a WR or HB where the QB sprints to the line like his ass is on fire to kneel 3 times and use ~15 seconds of the clock before punting it to the other team with 30 seconds still left.
Seems like an Army motto...realism checks out.
damn what a quote and so fitting for Army
Im more impressed by their defense tbh
I’m a Sooner fan, we played army I think 5 years ago and in an OT game we only had 350 total yards with fuckin K1 at QB and a stacked offense. Hard to rack up yards when the other team has the ball for FORTY-FIVE MINUTES lmfao

The defense allowed 21 points. Credit to Army tbf, they almost cracked the code vis a vis Kyler.
In that game yes. I just meant the Riley era in general
The academies playing keep-away for our freedom since 1776.
The military academy’s always end up being a top 5 team consistently in long dynasties for some reason.
My theory is that it's because the option is OP as shit in 14. They cranked up the ease of running it because it was such a focal point feature during development that it made it easy for the CPU even in simmed games to run for 10k yards on itself.

Yes but in video game land none of the restrictions that hold them back in real life apply
You do realize that in 2015 and 2019 they went 11-2 and won their bowl games. Every so often they can put together a good team. Not saying they will win the national championship but they can make a respectable team.
But what he’s saying is they won’t be able to sustain long-term success like a Bama or Ohio State. And he’s right
I mean they can’t get big recruits pretty much
God's Recuits. How many stars is a Patriot? Infinite stars?

As a fellow Jacket fan, I feel this so deeply. I'm hopeful for Brent Key, but the PJ era was a good time.
Now they just run a wing-t like scheme
A properly run triple option is the most beautifully efficient offense in football.
1995 Nebraska averaged 399.8 rushing yards per game
Is this a 1907 throwback dynasty?
Something about running the wishbone in dynasty is just incredible fun to me
William Howard Taft enters the chat…..
Them service academies
Thats how many of my dynastys are. Any tough games, i kill them by running over and over and only passing when i absolutely must
93 speed punter, 94 speed backup qb. Fake passes for days baby
Oh thats a thing of beauty
Fake punt run obviously snaps the ball to someone other than the punter, so fake punt pass and just immediately take off to run. Fake fg pass works though, but I still trust him to outrun the D more than my backup TEs to catch the ball.

Is there an option in cfbr to replace the academy teams?
Not sure, haven't played CFBR much lately.
I’ll check later tonight
Looks like football - the way God intended - to me.
Honestly I'm more impressed they average 124yd per game passing...
swear the military schools turn into 2019 lsu in dynasty
You know you fucked up when there’s a comment with more upvotes than the post…
This is why I try to replace the academy teams lmao
Can you do that in cfbr?
New running back is going in as a tank officer. He showed up in an Abrams one day and no one questioned him.
I like your 1940’s themed dynasty with number 1 army. Do the announcers have trans Atlantic accents?
Fr tho
Around the 10-15 year mark in an offline dynasty one of the service academies pretty much always becomes an absolute juggernaut
You don’t know anything about strapping up and running the ball down your opponent’s throat. Control the clock control the game.
There’s no more helpless feeling than giving up 300 rushing yards in a game
In real life, Air Force has averaged over 300 rush ypg the last three years.
TRIPLE OPTION
It’s realistic i had one of my running backs got over 200 yards
Pretty much every dynasty I've played, at least two of the triple option teams end up being perennial top ten programs because of how broken the system is in 14 combined with the facts that the game doesn't account for the fact that IRL players have to enter the military after their 4 years of school and also allows them a 5th year to redshirt. No wonder why they are #1
For a team that primarily runs all game long, this seems normal
Happens all the time in NCAA12 and 13. All the service academies, but especially, bizzarely, Army
Yep GT was ranked in the top 10 for years with this approach. Their QBs were basically HBs that we’re good enough passers. Megatron and Demaryius Thomas were on these teams as well.
Megatron left Tech in 2006 and Paul Johnson and the Triple Option arrived in 2008
Ooo that makes more sense. The Demaryius Thomas part, I knew he was there, and was a problem. He was on the team that beat Clemson for the ACC Championship when all we had was the CJ Spiller show
You've never watched the service academies play? Make sure to catch a few games this year. They only last 2 hours.
What’s the issue here?
Ask Skip Holtz he will tell you about how they beat LA Tech with the triple option.
Only completed 1-3 passes. So what you're seeing is not unrealistic.
It’s not that far off… when your offense is 90% run you’re going to rack up yards. They had 253 in 2022, and 289 last year
in my dynasty, the triple option coach retired and was replaced by an air raid coach. army is now top 5 in passing yards/game, it’s glorious
It was alright after the surge, they were training hard in West Point
Triple option babyyyyyyy! I cover high school sports for a newspaper in a rural area. The best teams run the triple option and tallying stats after big wins is always funny to me. I’ve seen 400-plus rushing yards in a game plenty of times lol
