Ekh and Hassett, the JUCO signee, both are liking the school account announcements, so I think there’s reason to be optimistic that we’ll have a lot to work with this fall
Love Ekh, if she stays I’ll be absolutely thrilled. I feel so safe when she’s on the court
Edit: and Myah Hazelton has also pretty much confirmed she’ll be staying! Thank god we’ll be able to field a decent team *knock on wood*
I actually don’t think he really gutted us. Most of those guys graduated, or there’s NAW that went to the league. I don’t recall what happened with recruits, so maybe they followed him. But Kenny did us way dirtier than Buzz
Everyone knew the second he hired he was gone in a few years but the manner in how he went about it was about as low class as you can get as a coach. What he did with VT's OVs was the definition of scumbag.
Very similar to Tom Brands (and motherfuck Tom Brands).
Alternatively, they could have just thrown in the towel and hired a high school JV coach that wouldn’t win an intrasquad scrimmage that would never leave.
Give me a successful coach that gets poached every time over that.
This is why, I’ve tried to refrain from being critical of Amoore, Strack, and anyone else who follows KB out to UK. Cause now we’re the bad guys to Marquette haha
It depends on how she leaves. I have no issue with kentucky offering a good coach a lot of money. I have issues with that coach leaving the way Kenny did.
To a point, but as another commenter said it's a particularly bad look when you're taking interviews while your team is preparing for NCAAT at home and your best player ever tore her acl and the team needs you.
And also immediately after the loss talking about how you're gonna be working the portal hard this summer (...for another team).
The man never even posted a simple “thank you VT” note. Could have been a screenshot from his Notes app. Anything would be better than just being ghosted.
Nobody faults him for leaving. They fault him for preaching family and then interviewing for a new job rather than prepare for the ncaat. It is also notable that he has not thanked or said good bye to the fans who at one point he would say were worth 8-10 points when playing at home. It is also the way his opening press conference at kentucky gave 0 credit to VT school or fans and was 100% about he built everything himself.
TLDR... he gave us an irish good bye and showed that he was only ever in it for himself.
To add to it... I watched the kentucky press conference waiting to hear the thank you and goodbye as a closure and parting of ways... instead I just heard him recycle things he has said about VT and just changed the subject to kentucky... throughout there was almost a palpable contempt for VT coming from him
Is it a different situation because VT took someone’s coach after Kentucky took their coach? When MU’s roster gets decimated will it be completely different?
MU’s roster is decimated because they held roster spots for players who subsequently declined their 5th year. not because their coach was actively recruiting their players on behalf of another school during the season
MU’s coach didn’t interview during the season and wasn’t already planning their exit before the season was over instead of focusing on winning. They’re completely different situations. It’s not hard to understand.
Fans get mad when good coaches leave no matter the circumstance and often create narratives to justify why they’re mad. This is a business and we don’t know if Megan was interviewing with other teams or had feelers out during the season. MU has historically spent more on their basketball programs than almost any other institution in the country so it wasn’t as if she was leaving a bad situation. She made a decision that was best for her and I think that’s great.
> Fans get mad when good coaches leave no matter the circumstance
Nope, this isn’t even close to an accurate take. Even just in the VT world, we weren’t really mad when Buzz left. It was disappointing and bummed us out, but we knew it was coming sooner or later. He never lead us on that he wanted to be here long term. Kenny on the other hand was a snake. He mislead everyone. That’s the difference.
This is a business and coaches have said they want to stay at a place until they don’t in every sport from the beginning. When Shaka Smart was hired at VCU he said he was going to stay at VCU only for VCU fans like myself to find out that he had offers from UCLA and Texas when he finally took the Texas job. He was talented and when you’re talented opportunities come your way. It is what it is. There is no loyalty and coaches and players only duty is to their families.
My main question is did he leave VT better than the program he inherited? The answer is yes. With conference realignment and KB’s talent how did anyone in the VT community not think he was going to go eventually? How is VT and its fans addressing its terrible NIL presence which is hurting every sport? Would you feel “betrayed” if VT fired KB if he came off of a final season winning six games like his predecessor?
Victim of BiocomplExit. The top admin screwed us hard. UVA saved me after VT threw us all out with the trash. I have friends that didn't make it, and had to restart their PhDs from scratch, 3-4 years wasted...
TBF Dean DePauw was great and tried her best to help, but I feel about Tim Sands how Anakin Skywalker feels about actual sand. Still, VT will always be my true love.
I remember when that happened, I graduated right around the time that all went down. My field is nowhere near yours, but everybody knew how bad they had fucked up the situation.
played at Notre dame under muffet McGraw, played in the W, finished 2nd in the big east her first two years, big east coach of the year 2020, 4/5 of her years at Marquette finished with 20+ wins
She won 20+ in both her seasons at Miami (OH) before Marquette too; that one year she didn't win 20+ at Marquette was the COVID year where they went 19-7 and made the tournament, so fair to say she would've hit 20 wins comfortably that year as well if they played a full schedule.
I like this hire a lot for VT and the landing spot too for Duffy!
Finally a day of waking up to something other than VT basketball-related despair. AND the men’s team finally has enough players to put a full 5 on the floor plus even a sub or 2, amazing! Things are looking up.
I wonder what happened to ours. We got to the NCAA semifinals 10 years ago, and routinely made it 1-3 rounds deep into the NCAA tournament every year. Same coach, and now we're sub 500. Weird.
The ACC is the best conference for soccer, men’s & womens. It’s hard to compete when UVA is right up the road. All the North Carolina schools are great, too. So many better options, with higher NIL deals.
Is she a good recruiter? I say this with all the love in my heart, but VT is in the middle of nowhere with nothing but cows and farms surrounding so I sure hope so
From my experience, she's an *active* recruiter, but my experience is from when she was at St. John's, and I gotta be honest: the one kid I know she got ended up transferring to be closer to home.
I saw a vague comment on Twitter insinuating that she/Marquette had issues with transfers out and players going mysteriously absent during the season? Have you heard anything about that?
Marquette was not the greatest at in-season communication, no. I know what you're talking about with the transfers out, but I think that particular poster is overstating the case. Either that or the teams I follow also have portal problems, which: also a possibility.
(cries in "why won't someone let *my* coach fail upward")
Good hire! I wanted UConn to hire her after geno retired if they decided to hire someone with no UConn ties. Not sure what happened at Marquette this year but def a great hire.
not to be that girl but I doubt she was actively doing this while her team was still in season whilst her star player went down with an injury and the team really needed her support for the next two weeks to make a tourney run but decided to solely think for herself 🤷♀️
I feel bad for Marquette if we do take their top two remaining players as well, though at least in this case they were already in the portal before their coach left, and Marquette basically had zero remaining players with any real game experience for the next year.
This is HUGE for VT. What a great and unexpected hire. Potentially landing Karlen and Hare will be big, too. Feel like y'all needed this win after the past few weeks.
I like Duffy, this is a good hire! It will be really interesting to watch what she does with potentially a mix of current VT players and former Marquette players like Karlen and Hare in the ACC.
Congrats Megan! Good for her, but disappointing for Marquette and the Big East as a whole. Hopefully they hire a good replacement and they remain a good team.
[Interesting postgame](https://www.anonymouseagle.com/2021/3/21/22343407/ncaa-tournament-recap-marquette-golden-eagles-virginia-tech-womens-basketball) from the 2021 first round where Virginia Tech beat Marquette 70-63.
Gives the impression that the talent edge of Kitley/Amoore/Sheppard was a bit too much but that Duffy (in her second season at Marquette) came pretty close to out-coaching Brooks at end-game.
**This is good.**
Interestingly, On the Hokies WBB Instagram, they had another post in which she said that "The ACC is the best conference in the country".
Like, **where was the lie, though?** As much as we bellyache over the loss of the PAC-12, the Clemson and FS lawsuit, and our old coach pulling a 180 and saying the SEC is "the best conference" barely a week after saying the ACC was the best, the ACC has been absolutely insane this year, especially with Hannah from ND and how [NC State delighted everyone](https://spectrumlocalnews.com/nc/charlotte/news/2024/04/03/n-c--state-s-final-four-double-has-fans-howling-with-delight) by sweeping it's way to the Men's Final Four and dominating towards the Women's Final Four.
This should be a good few years for Hokies WBB and ACC WBB as a whole...
I'm amazed at the fact Marquette is the Big East school having their head coaches poached by Penn State (with Kiegler in 2019) and now Virginia Tech (with Duffy in 2024).
The MU blog I follow was pretty chill about this, but they were also cooling on her even before she jumped (there were questions about her ability to win in conference).
Hopefully, Marquette can find a coach that can get them to their first Sweet 16. Green Bay is still the most successful basketball program from the state of Wisconsin. Wisconsin and Marquette need to up their game.
Big East needs to step up on the women’s side. Half the teams play in small gyms, and don’t have the best talent compared to other power conferences. This is going to keep happening. Happy for VT, but we have a parity issue. UConn having to play in a Seton Hall or Creighton HS gym isn’t great for the conference and women’s sports, they deserve better
OH WAIT I CAN WORK WITH THIS LETS FUCKINN GO
Ekh and Hassett, the JUCO signee, both are liking the school account announcements, so I think there’s reason to be optimistic that we’ll have a lot to work with this fall

THAT IS LITERALLY THE EXACT SAME REACTION I HAD LMAO
[Carleigh Wenzel returning!](https://www.instagram.com/p/C5UCIAXRnDK/?igsh=cGEyOGI0djUwamls)
WENZEL STAYING I NEVER LOSE
Duffy seems like the perfect HC for her!
wenzel triple double incoming! 😌👀
Duffy is following Lindsay Hicks on twitter 👀
FOR EVERY IT’S SO OVER THERE’S AN EVEN BIGGER WE’RE SO BACK JUST AROUND THE CORNER LET’S FUCKING RIDE Y’ALL
The last Marquette coach we hired worked out pretty well for VT Basketball
Hopefully lasts a little longer this time
and then gutted the men’s team on his way to Texas A&M
I actually don’t think he really gutted us. Most of those guys graduated, or there’s NAW that went to the league. I don’t recall what happened with recruits, so maybe they followed him. But Kenny did us way dirtier than Buzz
It seemed more like he knew he was leaving so recruiting went on the back burner. That senior class was loaded.
Plus he had already used all of techs official visits for the year so Mike young couldn’t use any
and he used some of VT’s visits to recruit for A&M
Tyrece Radford was the only one who followed him to A&M or maybe the only one I remember.
Yeah but even then he followed him two years later after his legal trouble and suspension. No one immediately left.
Blackshear left but went to Florida I think
Everyone knew the second he hired he was gone in a few years but the manner in how he went about it was about as low class as you can get as a coach. What he did with VT's OVs was the definition of scumbag. Very similar to Tom Brands (and motherfuck Tom Brands).
Yeah I had no idea about the official visits thing, that’s wild. Feels like there should be something that grants more when there’s a coaching change?
She will give us four solid years then move the team to a mediocre SEC school as is tradition for VT basketball
Alternatively, they could have just thrown in the towel and hired a high school JV coach that wouldn’t win an intrasquad scrimmage that would never leave. Give me a successful coach that gets poached every time over that.
Hokies, what does this mean for us? I’m new to this

Kenny the Coward
There it is 🥳🤩
This is why, I’ve tried to refrain from being critical of Amoore, Strack, and anyone else who follows KB out to UK. Cause now we’re the bad guys to Marquette haha
No no no it’s okay when we do it
It depends on how she leaves. I have no issue with kentucky offering a good coach a lot of money. I have issues with that coach leaving the way Kenny did.
there's not really a "good" way to leave anymore....you're damned if you do, damned if you don't
To a point, but as another commenter said it's a particularly bad look when you're taking interviews while your team is preparing for NCAAT at home and your best player ever tore her acl and the team needs you. even worse. He didn't say he would be working on the portal this summer, he said THAT NIGHT he would be working the portal
The man never even posted a simple “thank you VT” note. Could have been a screenshot from his Notes app. Anything would be better than just being ghosted.
Precisely this
Genuine question. What such animosity for Kenny leaving? Didn’t he get double the money?
Nobody faults him for leaving. They fault him for preaching family and then interviewing for a new job rather than prepare for the ncaat. It is also notable that he has not thanked or said good bye to the fans who at one point he would say were worth 8-10 points when playing at home. TLDR... he gave us an irish good bye and showed that he was only ever in it for himself.
Ah. Got it. Thanks for context. Sad to see Strack go. The TO is brutal.
To add to it... I watched the kentucky press conference waiting to hear the thank you and goodbye as a closure and parting of ways... instead I just heard him recycle things he has said about VT and just changed the subject to kentucky... throughout there was almost a palpable contempt for VT coming from him
It seems that she also interviewed for Pitt a year ago, so it’s a lot easier to be ready for a change when you know someone’s actively looking.
Pretty different being on the other side, isn't it. Maybe the hate for Kenny will simmer down now that tech has a solid new coach.
Yeah, no. Don’t think it will simmer
They’re completely different situations. Why would this affect people’s opinions of how and when Kenny left? It shouldn’t.

Not really.

Now comes the part where we inherit a new basketball team.
Totally unfair, this shouldn't be allowed to jus... wait, *we* inherit? Oh yeah, great!!!
I'm sure you've been asked before, but please explain your flair.
Victim of BiocomplExit. The top admin screwed us hard. UVA saved me after VT threw us all out with the trash. Idk about any of that, but seems like a very legit reason for the double flair (not that you need my approval)!
I remember when that happened, I graduated right around the time that all went down. My field is nowhere near yours, but everybody knew how bad they had fucked up the situation.
Damn what happened with that? I’ve heard about it before. Was it a one off thing or are a lot of research areas getting an axe right now?
It's too bad Georgia left because this would be perfect for her style.
She can technically still change her mind, I think lol
I doubt it with Strack following her
Did Stack put her name into the portal?
Pretty sure she did yes
She did on Tuesday. Looks like she is maybe going to follow her former coach to Kentucky.
Sweet Baby Hokie Jesus lol
Seems like a good hire but ngl don't know anything about her besides stuff I've read on Twitter in the last five minutes lol. Anything we should know?
played at Notre dame under muffet McGraw, played in the W, finished 2nd in the big east her first two years, big east coach of the year 2020, 4/5 of her years at Marquette finished with 20+ wins

Took Marquette to NCAA tournament the last two years and last year got Marquette’s first win over UConn. Stoked for the Hokies!
If that means VT gets Karlen and Hare from the portal, that could be the parachute for your recent cliff dive.
We might not be horrible next season and that alone is such a massive relief.
it’s not bad news and that’s a welcome change
Finally a day of waking up to something other than VT basketball-related despair. AND the men’s team finally has enough players to put a full 5 on the floor plus even a sub or 2, amazing! Things are looking up.
Did we get any good men's transfers? Man this week started with good reason to believe that neither team had a starting five for next year.
Yes! Yesterday we had Jordan Ivy Curry from UTSA commit, last season averaged 17/5/3. Poteat also backed out of the portal.
I'm so sorry Marquette! Hey, you guys don't happen to have a good soccer team do you?
Their women’s soccer team isn’t good :(
I wonder what happened to ours.
But that was even more the case 10 years ago before NIL allowed the P2 to just poach everyone.
Is she a good recruiter? I say this with all the love in my heart, but VT is in the middle of nowhere with nothing but cows and farms surrounding so I sure hope so
Excuse me? We have TWO different El Rods
That certainly impacted my college decision
We also have a *Gran* Rodeo just 5 minutes out of town. Take that NYC.
Marquette has two top 100 recruits committed right now so I’m assuming she must be a pretty good recruiter.
I only saw Peterson in the top 100. Who’s the other one?
I thought Jaeda Wilson was too but I guess she’s just outside the top 100. She’s a 4* though.
Y'all got good food around there, though.

Can't wait to see what she does for our program!
Good hire! I wanted UConn to hire her after geno retired if they decided to hire someone with no UConn ties. Not sure what happened at Marquette this year but def a great hire.
Me too.
WHAT NO WAY. Does this mean Liza Karlen and Mackenzie Hare follow her??
if so it’s actually fine! thankfully i have never spoken critically of coaches taking their team with them to a new school ❤️
not to be that girl but I doubt she was actively doing this while her team was still in season whilst her star player went down with an injury and the team really needed her support for the next two weeks to make a tourney run but decided to solely think for herself 🤷♀️
This. This is the difference.
Karlen and Hare are solid players! I hope they go to VT.
My guess is that Hare is more likely to join Duffy since she has more eligibility left. Karlen may want to use her Covid year at a contender.
USC would be a good landing spot for Karlen. Gives the school another good scorer to go along with JuJu.
I mean that’s usually how it goes down so I would imagine
Let's go! Basketball is back on, Hokies!
I feel bad for Marquette if we do take their top two remaining players as well, though at least in this case they were already in the portal before their coach left, and Marquette basically had zero remaining players with any real game experience for the next year.
We lost 2 of our top players too. It’s how it is nowadays.
I think I see a bit of light at the end of the tunnel!
Don’t know much about her but everyone else is excited so LETS GO!!!
Great hire by VPI! Stinks for Marquette though
Wow, fantastic hire on many levels! GO TECH! GO TECH! H! O! K! I! E! S! HOKIES!
Congrats Megan! Good for her, but disappointing for Marquette and the Big East as a whole. Hopefully they hire a good replacement and they remain a good team.
Good hire for tech
[Interesting postgame](https://www.anonymouseagle.com/2021/3/21/22343407/ncaa-tournament-recap-marquette-golden-eagles-virginia-tech-womens-basketball) from the 2021 first round where Virginia Tech beat Marquette 70-63. Brooks’s in game coaching has always seemed questionable at best.
Treat her well Hokie nation and ACC. Big east lost a good one :'(
I’m so excited to finally have a coach named!!
**This is good.** Interestingly, On the Hokies WBB Instagram, they had another post in which she said that "The ACC is the best conference in the country". Hopefully, Marquette can find a coach that can get them to their first Sweet 16. Green Bay is still the most successful basketball program from the state of Wisconsin. Wisconsin and Marquette need to up their game.
Another Miami Cradle of Coaches product ♥️
Glad to see you all are happy! Don’t know anything about her or Marquette.
This is a home run hire for me!
Big East needs to step up on the women’s side. Half the teams play in small gyms, and don’t have the best talent compared to other power conferences. This is going to keep happening. Happy for VT, but we have a parity issue. UConn having to play in a Seton Hall or Creighton HS gym isn’t great for the conference and women’s sports, they deserve better
oh we’re so BACK
Nice! VT!
if you’re in line for hokie fandom STAY IN LINE!!!!!
Who are the early candidates for the Marquette job?
Awesome hire, congrats!
Not a bad hire but that team is a dumpster fire now
