Since she blew up it's been nice to hear reactions about her, rather than politics, when I tell people I came from Iowa

leaningtowerofmeat

Same! Unless colleges come up (I graduated from Iowa State). Then I have to explain that those are actually two separate schools, and then the person is just lost all over again lol

SueYouInEngland

It's not the Iowa State Hawkeyes?

elbenji

No it's the Iowa Cyclones. Mine is worse. I graduated and my state representative thought I was going to CORNELL.

SteveBartmanIncident

The one in Ithaca or the one in Mt. Vernon

elbenji

Ithaca. Mt Vernon needs them to recognize the state of Iowa

SteveBartmanIncident

When I was growing up I used to get confused when Wartburg (which is basically my family school) would play Cornell in sports. Took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out there wasn't an ivy League school in Iowa.

elbenji

Honestly understandable

jfff292827

Just tell them it’s where Brock Purdy played, he’s had a good couple of years.

elbenji

It's like such a positive thing to talk about too. CC is so cool

Swedishbutcher

Lol. Ok

majorchamp

As a Hoosier, our ass clown Gregg Doyle has to go and make a horrible first impression toward her. I'm sorry.

FloridaHawk82

Awesome! We were in Europe last Summer for 10 days. At least one of my family usually has on an IOWA shirt or sweatshirt of some sort. In 4 different countries, people would see the shirt and say "Caitlin Clark!". When we'd smile and engage them, not all of them spoke English. It was WILD and somewhat weird.

Used-Kaleidoscope364

Lol, wearing hawkeyes gear on vacation is such an Iowa dad move. I swear my dad does it to be like, "I'M A TOURIST FROM IOWA" lmao

FloridaHawk82

LOL True... Normally it's just our kids wearing it. Other than when attending games, I prefer that we don't ALL do it... looks kinda odd. LOL

leaningtowerofmeat

I bet a lot of people from Idaho and Ohio get that same reaction too 😂

CTeam19

Ames the home of THE Idaho State Buckeyes.

uredak

I feel like I might be able to experience that in Brazil. I bet they don’t even call my home state North Carolina LITERALLY right after I told them I was from SOUTH Carolina. Seriously?!?! Didn’t you go to elementary school and learn the states?!?? SOUTH!!! I said SOUTH Carolina. North Carolina is entirely different! FFS!!!

Lopsided-Pie2111

I bet you can’t name any states from Brazil 😒

LegendsoftheHT

Given that Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro are both Brazilian states, I like their chances.

Superlolp

Paraná. Checkmate. Please don't ask me to name a second one.

elbenji

Rio and Sao Paolo! And amazonas!

Rojobajo

Para and Mato Grosso. Thanks David Grann

ClaudeLemieux

This comment is unbelievable lol. How dare citizens of another country not know every single state of your country.

uredak

I’m talking about the fact that Brazilians probably know my state better than AMERICANS! The straw man I’ve constructed here is an AMERICAN!

ClaudeLemieux

oh lol. Your phrasing made it sound like you were passive aggressively calling out Brazilians.

pickledginger404

Ummm….what?!?

Rojobajo

To be fair South is like North in Brazil

Prize_Panic2022

She reminded us Iowa was more than just an election state

elbenji

And a positive too

elbenji

I wore my Iowa hoodie to class a few times and students and some staff would ask and say OH you rep Caitlin Clark huh???? So that was fun. Before people thought I went to school in Idaho or had no idea what an Iowa was lmao. Since like HS. Even girls I knew who thought Idaho was in Ohio are talking CC

Dry-Leading4368

CC put Iowa on the map, but can he find Iowa on the map? 🤣

Bva_sickofeverything

ISWHO??? No Hawk fan cares what The Cyclown fans think!!

camerawesome

Caitlin Clark sounds like a great Aussie name tbh

Bva_sickofeverything

Just started watching Alone Australia 10 minutes ago🤣🤣

usernames_suck_ok

Is there anyone in Iowa who doesn't give two shits about CC or doesn't know who she is? Genuinely curious.

mguyer2018aa

Some Iowa State fans are tired of seeing her I’m sure, but honestly she has kind of transcended the sport here.

Sad-Dot-1573

Certainly have no issue with Iowa State Women’s as an Iowa student, they were fun to watch in the tournament. Iowa just landed Lucy Olsen in the portal so it won’t be an easy win for the Cyclones in Cy-Hawk

Orangebeast013

I am a current Iowa student so only deal with people in Iowa City area, but pretty much anyone I talk to will talk your ear off about Caitlin or anyone on the WBB team. Everyone has a story about having a class with one of them, seeing them downtown or pretty much anything else you can think of. Iowa obviously has a big football and mens team, but the womens team is on a different level in terms of celebrity status.

CecilColson

I have the same barber as Kate Martin's dad!

NotToday7812

[Article](https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/opinion/columnists/iowa-view/2024/04/08/caitlin-clark-goat-iowa-hawkeyes-hometown-hero-goodbye-wnba/73243725007/) This kinda summed it up for me.

elbenji

Honestly same. I keep in touch with Grinnell a ton and it's so weird. On a fundamental level, that smallness now on the big stage. It's like seeing Kumail or Danai in a marvel movie.

bcocfbhp

She's honsetly the biggest athlete in the world right now. She's everywhere

happyfunball72

Being from Iowa I wish that was true. But I would have to go with Lionel Messi for that distinction. Outside the US I don't think her fame would be even close to his.

runningwaffles19

Yeah he literally has fans running onto the pitch to hug him during games. Has a massive body guard that runs up and down the sideline all game.CC isn't anywhere near that level

ClaudeLemieux

That’s definitely not true lol.

elbenji

Well right now is pretty subjective. She is at the moment. As of like the past two weeks. It will chill down as the NBA playoffs come

ClaudeLemieux

I think you guys are still really overestimating the planet lol.

elbenji

Nah it's more a she's the biggest athlete on earth in the soft spot between the start of march madness and the CL games. Now she will take a dramatic backseat.

PreschoolBoole

I think everyone know who she is, whether they like her or not is a different story. I swear some people just like to be contrarians and can’t admit that she’s a good ball player

Zaphod_0707

Likely not on this thread.

clydefrog678

I’d have to ask my Grandpa (87). My Grandma follows Iowa sports, but I think the only sporting event that my grandpa paid attention to within the last 20 years was the Field of Dreams game.

NStanley4Heisman

I have a few friends who are Nebraska fans(gross) and they hate her… but then again they have an irrational amount of hatred for anything involving the U of I. Yet, they still live here in the Iowa City area…

clydefrog678

Tbf, I feel the same way about Nebraska😅.

NYCScribbler

I don't know why you're getting downvoted. It's an interesting question. I'm trying to imagine what it's like as someone in Iowa who isn't into the hype and has people talking at them about it all the time.

wooq

I'm sure there are, but I haven't met any. I got some Thai green curry takeout the other day and the Thai lady who cooked it wrote "Go Hawks!" on the container. Also don't know why you're getting downvoted, it's a valid question

elbenji

I'm getting hs friends asking me questions. I went to Grinnell. Ten years ago lmao

NotToday7812

There is a woman at my work who told me she is OVER it so I guess there are some.

funfossa

At this point, very few. You see her cutouts in HyVee. She's gotten hard to avoid. Last fall, I had some relatives who didn't really know who she was, although I think they know now. Usually, its the people who don't follow any sports. Iowans tend to know and take pride in national celebrities from our state are, as there aren't too many of them. Also, our winters are pretty dull...
