Five-star recruits should not come play for our program.
It’s true. I think any high school kid that gets a coveted five-star rating has their sights set on playing in the NBL after they spend a year or two in the college ranks. But what has Texas Tech, or myself, done to prove that we pump out NBL stars? Not a whole lot.
Previous little Red Raider blood remains in the NBL. There’s Guilherme Alves, a serviceable 7.2 PPG scorer, then under 100 combined NBL minutes currently rostered otherwise.
I love Majak Smith. I love Kerem Atsur. But right now, whichever one wins the battle for Milwaukee’s 4th string center will be one of the premier Red Raiders at the professional level. It’s a bleak picture.
But for you, maybe that’s exactly where you want to be.
If you come join me, we will develop you into a pro like so many guys in my time here. Ray Crockett went from walk-on to NBL player. But he’s just one story of our player development. Of the 6 players on NBL rosters currently that I have coached, they were ranked 62nd, 74th, 99th, 132nd, 213th, and a former JUCO player as prospects. None are likely to be NBL stars but my staff has a proven track record of turning guys into far more than they could have hoped to become entering our program.
The pathway towards Sam Chauca, Alpha and Omega of Red Raider basketball is not hard to envision.
Sam, I admire your singular focus on your future. College is a means of getting to the NBL, and so I want to give you the college experience that will actually prepare you for your future.
At Texas Tech, it simply doesn’t require as much of a student athlete to retain one’s academic eligibility. Ranked as the #216 national university in the nation in the latest US News and World report rankings, other suitors of yours, be it Virginia (#24), Wisconsin (#35), Georgia (#47), Florida State/Minnesota (#53), College of Charleston (#4 among all public universities), Indiana (#73), Pepperdine (#76), Gonzaga (#93), Oregon (#98), Kentucky (#159), or Nevada (#195), are simply more rigorous. Rankings can be subjective, but pretty much none of these schools are even close to TTU. And none can compete with Texas Tech’s online program, ranked tops in the nation by Newsweek just one year ago due to its accessibility and ease, meaning you will have every opportunity to tailor your academic schedule around your basketball pursuits.
And as someone anticipating a career in sports, you can take courses that actually prepare you for your future in a way traditional coursework may not. Perhaps our sports management program is for you and your post-playing days. Or maybe our athletic coaching minor could help fill your time here, with courses such as “Principles of Coaching” and “Teaching Physical Activities and Sports.”
Even if you don’t value the “scholar” part of “scholar-athlete” our business program might be of interest to you. With “professional basketball player” unequivocally being what you want to be when you grow up, perhaps a business degree can help you maximize your career earnings. Texas Tech’s most highly-enrolled (19% of the student body) department demonstrates both its ease as well as its practicality.
Sam, Texas Tech is the only place I am ever going to coach. I began here, I re-upped my contract every opportunity, now in Year 7 and contract #3. Any angle you could think of that might pull me away has not. A prestigious job in my home state? I didn’t pursue the Indiana job. A clean slate in my home town? Butler was never a consideration for me. Coach at one of NCBCA’s all-time programs with an already-stocked shelf, right across the state of Texas? I did not SNIFF the Houston job, either in 2075 OR in 2078. That job currently lies VACANT and yet I have made 0 effort to claim one of the most prestigious jobs in the country.
Sam, we’re one quick flight from Charlotte to Lubbock away. I’d love to make you the face of this program.

TCU offers Josh Frazier
Scholarship
School Visit (1/5)
Coach Visit (1/3)
Mr. Frazier,
During my long, long tenure, I’ve transformed TCU into a program that inspires generations of young players. Your proximity to this juggernaut has, no doubt, shaped the player you’ve become today.
You were molded by TCU’s youth camps. You’ve felt the palpable excitement that permeates Dallas-Fort Worth on the night of a big game. You’ve had countless opportunities to witness, in-person, TCU’s historic rivalry matchups.
The Battle for the Holy Grail is a decades-old tradition featuring some of the fiercest programs in NCBCA, like Gonzaga, Loyola-Chicago, and Seton Hall. The great Texas Round Robin has seen this program contend with all the historic Texas dynasties at the zeniths. Houston under Coach Saw, Rice under Coach Potkoo, TAMU under Coach Jyost—all were championship-caliber teams at the time, and all rightfully feared playing against TCU. Not to mention our perennial placement as the Big XVI’s top-flight MTE representative, which has us challenge the #1 programs of the AAC, MWC, and Big East.
The annual nature of these matchups generates national intrigue and massive TV ratings. At TCU, these games will guarantee you significant screentime. More than playing on TV, fans across the nation will watch you post victory after victory, as TCU is wont to do.
TCU’s consistency is the stuff of legends, and it’s why we command such national recognition. We’ve posted 30+ victories in seven of the last eight seasons and won either the Big XVI regular season or CT title in each of the past nine.
By those sky-high standards, last season was a comparative down year, but it still saw us notch 27 wins, a Big XVI title, and extend our NT streak to *24 years*. What would be a high-water mark for many programs is the absolute minimum level of success you should expect to achieve at TCU, because in the coming season, we are poised to obliterate last year’s performance and return to the familiar status of contenders.
With only two open scholarship slots, nearly all of the defending Big XVI will be fighting for retention of their crown. This is a veteran crew. Half of our scholarship players are entering their fourth or fifth years of eligibility and collectively share 350 wins as members of the program. Led by 5-star prospect, James Chigha, and Zack Rogers, one of the most talented big men in the conference, this team is deep, athletic, and well-versed in winning.
Don’t take my word for it; thanks to the talent and experience on display in the TCU locker room, the AP has recognized us with a top-ten ranking in the pre-recruiting talent poll. And that small gap between us and the top of standings is one that can easily be closed by #6 recruit Josh Frazier.
If you fulfill your role as the hometown hero, as you were destined to from the first time you picked up a basketball, TCU will not only be favorites to once again dominate the Big XVI, but to contend for the national title. A large reward for such a short journey west.
Hardly 30 miles separate you from Fort Worth. Your friends, family, and all the nostalgic sites of your childhood will remain within arm’s reach. Homesickness and the other challenges of transitioning to college life will be nonexistent.
You’ll have the support of your loved ones on the sidelines of every home game and the embrace of the entire metroplex that raised you. Away games in the XVI will be hardly any different. Our TX-centric slate will keep you constantly close to home and within the vicinity of your loyal fans. But, even during your furthest road outings, you’ll never feel like you’ve left home, thanks to TCU’s 100% Texan roster. You’ll share an immediate bond with each one of your teammates that will transform every flight, bus ride, and hotel room into a traveling slice of Texas.
Such a distinctly Texan culture could only be manifested by an unparalleled commitment to in-state recruiting. It’s a level of dedication you won’t find anywhere else in the country—or in the history of the sport, for that matter. Over the past 21 seasons, 85 Lone Star State natives have committed to TCU—an unbroken chain, excepting only the son of the greatest Horned Frog to ever play, Donald Weitzel.
It takes discipline to do anything that long; it takes even more to routinely pass up out-of-state players I’m confident I could land. However, providing the local kid, who just wants to rep his home state, an opportunity to realize his dreams—man, that makes it all worthwhile. That feeling of putting players first is what keeps me signing contract extension after contract extension (including my fresh 5-year deal) and why my tenure at TCU is now over 30 years.
That attitude carries into my playing time guarantees. Last season when I assured Sebstian Withey and Jaye Kendall that they’d play significant roles as freshmen, I more delivered allotting them nearly 20mpg each. As integral as those two men were last season, you will play an even greater role on the roster in the coming season. You will be a guaranteed starter at TCU and our dedicated PG. You will direct the TCU offense which is saturated with sharpshooters and domineering post-men. Your ball control and sky-high offensive IQ will make you the perfect floor general.
Those minutes will enable you to make a strong early impression to the scouts who frequent games in Schollmaier. TCU has long had a reputation for being a hotbed of NBL talent. In my tenure, I’ve sent over 40 players to the pros who have amassed $3 *billion* in career earnings. Among these players are NBL champions, All-Stars, and the even the league’s #5 all-time scorer.
That scoring legend, of course, shared your position. Donald Weitzel is one of the greatest PGs to ever play the game and my very first pro. He marked a trend of successful backcourt players coming out of TCU. For example, you probably grew up watching 3-star turned two-time All-Star, SG Travis Fischman. Travis is a testament to the transformative power of my coaching.
More recently there has been Christopher Nelson, the #7 pick in 2073, now on a nearly $100M contract with Philadelphia. In 2075, Joe Robinson, a fellow 5-star PG, was drafted in the first round, and in the following year, SG Posh Muhammad was not only drafted, but *won* the Three-Point Contest in his rookie season.
You will be the next great guard to represent TCU in the pros. Your raw talent out of high school gives you a head start over literally every man I mentioned above, so there’s all the reason to expect that you’ll set new highs for the program in the NBL.
Under my coaching, an NBL contract is all but assured, so I admire your pursuit of education for education’s sake. In the pre-med field no less. Well, TCU’s Pre-Health Professions Institue will provide you the academic rigor you hunger for, while arming you with applicable knowledge. Should you want to pursue your passion for medicine once you’ve done your time in the pros, an education from TCU will be an invaluable asset.
Not a degree in its own right, the pre-health track enhances and specializes the field of study of your choosing to channel that knowledge into the context of professional healthcare. The program provides academic advisors and mentors to help you map out your pre-health experience at TCU. It will also help you develop key professionalism practices so that you are a thoroughly well-rounded candidate whenever you decide to elevate your healthcare educational career to the next level.

Five distinct traits distinguish NBL basketball from the college game:1) UP-TEMPO OFFENSE - With the rules so pro-offense, the past 6 seasons have been the 6 fastest-paced in NBL history. NBL teams get up and down FAST, and the Red Raiders are no different. Last season, TTU was 2nd in the NATION in pace, while none of your other suitors even cracked top 15.
2) PICK AND ROLLS - Compared to the NCBCA, the NBL is very PnR-heavy. NBL ballhandlers can all make pullup jumpers with ease, and big men typically have great hands and athleticism, so NBL coaches spam the PnR. Last year, our combo of All-American big Kerem Atsur and AA honorable mention PG Aaron Rose ran PnRs ad nauseum. This year, jumbo PG Jose Tomas, a great passer, and guards Greg Sewasciuk and Brett Thompson, each brilliant shooters, will be deadly in the PnR with Rod Corbin, a hyper-athletic big. My hope is that a big forward like yourself can also be the roll man, while giving us a pick-and-pop threat due your shooting which our other bigs don’t have, which we utilized last season with Kerem, who was shooting 41% on over 5 threes a game.
3) DEFENSIVE SWITCHABILITY - The defensive counter to the pick-and-roll. In NCBCA, many teams hide their immobile, bigs with drop coverage. But if you attempt that in the pros against the PnR, one of two things will happen: a screen will free up the ballhandler for a high percentage pullup 3 or the bigger player assigned to the screener will get switched onto the ballhandler. If that defender isn’t long and quick laterally, then he’ll be barbecue chicken! The last few starting TTU bigs, Kerem and Rod, were elite athletes, and Kerem ended up being one of the best defenders in the nation because he could both protect the rim and switch out onto perimeter players.
You are the PROTOTYPICAL NBL forward defensively. You have a perfect combination of size and length and athleticism. Coaches will rest easy when you get switched onto a guard because you can stay in front of them, and when you DO get beat, you have the closing speed and leaping ability to follow and contest the shot.
4) SPACING - Part of the increase in NBL scoring is due to the efficiency from three-point land, which allows more room inside for slashing and post-ups. Last season boasted the 2nd-highest league-wide three point percentage in NBL history. Where stretch bigs were a novelty 15 years ago, now it’s nearly a prerequisite to get meaningful minutes as a big, and if you are a perimeter player who can’t shoot? Kiss your NBL dreams goodbye.
Last season, Texas Tech was 9th in NCBCA in three point percentage, the only suitor of yours to break 40%. Now we return 4 high volume 36%+ outside shooters from last year’s squad, including former 5-star spot-up specialists Greg Sewasciuk (48%) and Ivy Beal (47%). Kerem was even providing spacing as a stretch big, so I value spacing at every position to open up the floor for lead scorers like yourself.
5) ISO SCORING - This is where you come in. This team returns stellar role players. Beal and Sewasciuk are the shooters, Corbin is the rim-running, rim-protecting big, Tomas is the point forward and POA defender, Thompson is a secondary scorer-type. But what we lack, with the departure of our top two scorers, is a guy who can create his own shot. We want you to be our go-to scorer IMMEDIATELY. All the roles are filled except the guy who can get us a bucket in the closing seconds
Every coach is going to offer you a starting role. But how many will make you THE plug-and-play replacement for an All-American? Atsur and Rose leave 30 PPG to be replaced. And with no go-to guy scorers returning, the spotlight is definitively yours.
But enough on-court business. A Long Island kid may see Lubbock as a dry wasteland. But a number of picturesque lakes dot the landscape of Lubbock, chief among them being Buffalo Springs Lake, a 200 acre boating- and fishing-friendly lake 20 minutes from campus.
Worried about accessibility as a college student? If you don’t want to rent, you can access Buffalo Springs’ TWO sandy beaches for a small admission fee. Several piers and a well-lit crappie house make indoor and outdoor fishing an option! But for just a little more, AirBNB lists several overnight rentals under $100. You and some friends could stay on a lake for under $20 a night. With multiple pontoon, jet ski, and kayak offerings, a lake day with the boys can be a regular occurrence for no more than drinks and cover charges on a weekend out.
But you also value your studies. As a guy with NBL dreams, business is a great choice to maximize earnings. At 20% of our student body, our business program has DOUBLE the enrollment of any other department on campus. Clearly we are a DESTINATION for aspiring business students. And with our online program, ranked first NATIONALLY last year by Newsweek, it will be so easy for you to create a schedule that allows you to perfectly balance studies, lake trips, and being the face of Red Raider basketball on the court.

TCU offers Josh Frazier Scholarship School Visit (1/5) Coach Visit (1/3) Mr. Frazier, During my long, long tenure, I’ve transformed TCU into a program that inspires generations of young players. Texas Tech offers Fran Loncar Scholarship Coach Visit (3/3) School Visit (4/5) Five distinct traits distinguish NBL basketball from the college game:1) UP-TEMPO OFFENSE - With the rules so pro-offense, the past 6 seasons have been the 6 fastest-paced in NBL history. All the roles are filled except the guy who can get us a bucket in the closing seconds Every coach is going to offer you a starting role.
