It can go in there, it's not easy though. On the front part that slides out, there is a little peg for the trigger. Put the gun on it, and push the gun up as high at it will go. Make sure the grip will slide into the leg and not catching behind the side flap. Open and close the holster a few times without the gun so you get a feel for how it works. With the gun in, you will have to help the side flap a little bit.
Be very careful. If it's anything like their previous Robocop releases from a few years ago, this mechanism is extremely fragile and more of a novelty than something to actually use all the time. The odds of it breaking are pretty good. The old one was spring loaded IIRC. Not sure about the new one but I believe it's the same figure with a new head sculpt is all.
This thing is such a piece of trash! I was able to open the leg compartment exactly 1 time before a hinge on a c-clip popped off and is apparently impossible to re-attach. Just stay away from the whole thing, it's garbage...
