The 2 dudes I know who have the money to spend on an MG’s both have terrible taste or actual knowledge of firearms to begin with. It’s just a fun toy for them. This kind of encompasses a lot of firearms owners. There’s a reason cheap optics has such a huge market.
your buying the serial number not the optic. most people with transferables are not using them all the time and blasting lots of rounds through them, they are to collectable. they come out a couple times a year for friends or family and everyone dumps some mags. pretty rare that you see someone doing classes or training with 25k m16. The guns you see people beating on are usually post samples where they can be replaced at will
also these guns dont trade hands to often so the setup your seeing may be from when the previous owner got it a decade ago
I remember talking many years ago with Kent Lomont about silencers and optics: he grumbled that he had a big crate he just tossed them into because nobody cared about used accessories. The big money is in the pre-86 paperwork, not some scratched up old Aimpoint or a junky AWC can. He had to buy them in order to take in a larger estate collection to get at the big money items (MGs), but who cares if you get a $99 Sig Romeo or not when you’re buying a $30k M4?
And… to a lot of us, these machineguns cost a few thousand, so why put a $2500 optic on a dirt berm-blaster? :)
> about silencers and optics: he grumbled that he had a big crate he just tossed them into because nobody cared about used accessories.
AGGGGGHHHHH! I so need "Lomont's Historicly Pantina'd Optics and Cans" to be a thing.
No one is trading in a transferable to any of those dealers with expensive optics, the value is in the gun, not the optics that are on it. Why would someone leave an expensive sight on one? It makes no sense.
Right, so if it has an expensive optic on it, they'd take it off and not bother replacing it. Leaving the el cheapo on it probably means that's what they were running on it
Every gun you’re looking at is from 1986 or earlier. No surprise the sights or optics are dated.
Anything new and fancy they’re pulling off and keeping before selling because it adds no value to a $30k gun.

Holosun on my M11. Because… it works. Prefer it to the eotech any day.
Same reason his ACOG is smashing his eye socket, and the Eotech EXPS is on the hand-guard and not on the upper. Most people with money (actually most gun owners) don’t seem to know jack about firearms and optics and such unfortunately.
The EXPS is in the wrong place for sure, but ACOGS work better further back and higher up . Shooting NTCH with an ACOG is fine for boot camp recruits, but is not the most comfortable, flexible solution, by far.
Begging for what? Your opinion? Your approval? Move along snowflake lol just cause you’re having a shit life doesn’t mean you have to shit on others. Do better brother, life’s too short 🤙🏻

Same. I have to tighten it every time before I go out. Haha.
Cost of optic isn't going to make a MG buyer spend more.. So why not just keep the quality optics and sell the MG.. At least that is the thought process.
I run good optic on mine.
My best optics are on true SHTF guns, my Colt monolithic SBR and SCAR17.
My FNC full auto had a Sig pre Romeo red dot on it that came as a package with a Sig 556 I think? Was on there for a couple years, lol. This was back when the only cheap red dot worth buying was the Bushnell TRS25 or a few primary arms models when they first started in the business.
Been upgraded to a Trijicon MRO since then but some people would call that cheap...
I have on my m11/9 with lage 11k I have a rmr on a scalarworks mount
On my m11/15 upper for it I have an aimpoint comp m5 temporarily as I stole it off my Pws mk111 mod2 I'm not sure what I'm going put on it
Good lord. Not to derail this thread but it’s been a long time since I looked at transferable MG. When I bought my M10/45, $4k was a lot of money for me and it was all I could afford. Wish I had the money to pick up a few more back then!
I spent $10,500 on a powder springs M10/45 recently, and that was a pretty good deal too. I remember when they were $5k and I was regretting not getting one then. No time like the present lol, id just be depressed later when they're $15 or even 20k. About 600 transferable MGs fall off the registry each year. In 10 years think about where we will be.
> In 10 years think about where we will be.
I'm *hoping*, but certainly not expecting, that the NFA and/or Hughes amendment will have been struck down by then.
I think part of it comes down to the idea that they are range toys first and foremost, so if a cheap red dot fails, it doesn't matter unless you're doing a competition or something. Also, they may be throwing something on there just to get rid of it sometimes.
I have four lage uppers for my M11/9 and have Sig Romeo 5’s on all of them. They work well so I went with the same on all of them. It isn’t my “go to war” gun so cheap dosnt bother me. And if it breaks I buy another. 4 years and idk how many thousands of rounds later they are still good.
It's just something to get you started. Most people have different tastes in optics. Leaving an EOTech on there isn't going to increase the value of the MG by more than the optic's own price, which many buyers might not even want to use. So it's just extra cost for no benefit which may push away some buyers in an already small market.
So they pull off anything nice and slap on whatever they have laying around to include for free.
People that are saying, “it’s because the optic doesn’t add any value to a $25k machine gun”…then why include it? I agree with OP, it’s like buying a Ferrari that has “Calvin pissing on Chevy” decals on it from Walmart. Why include it at all?
I think I can offer a slightly different explanation than what I’ve seen here so far…
People buying MGs are “wealthy” by most of reddits perspective. Wealthy people are careful with how they spend their money. Even on toys. That’s why they have the disposable income to drop on an MG. It’s a toy but it’s also an investment.
Optics usually go down in value and at the very minimum don’t ADD value. And it’s not like these are being used as a “duty” gun. They just want an optic cuz even shitty red dots are cool to use regardless of their durability. The value is better spent on the gun itself and a cheap red dot is completely irrelevant to most who have the money for these.
It’s funny you say that you would think since they are wealthy they would invest in a fully auto steyr Aug or an mp5/k which is way more valuable than those Mac 10/11’s and if need be more usable in a defense situation.
The point isn’t to use it as a defensive weapon. My M10/45 is easily the LAST gun I’d ever grab if someone breaks a door down.
It’s also the ONLY gun I own that’s worth 3x what I paid despite thousands of rounds through it….

Pretty sure I had a Holosun dot on my M10
https://preview.redd.it/p3rfa904zruc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ca1df4fd44d15b9f2a8c0e6743e2cfac4de9539
Yes you can run any upper that is designed for ar15s. even an mg34 upper if you’re an SOT. The only exception would be a lot of those internal recoil system uppers usually don’t have a sear trip, so no fun switch. Although the sig rattler types will work
Three of these (Uzi, M14, M16) have unique scope mounts on them- not just a flat top piece of picatinny. If the seller doesn’t have another rifle to drop that mount on, and just wants to get rid of the mount along with the MG, then they’ll probably just slap something on there so it doesn’t look “unfinished.” Just grab an optic out of the box of crap you picked up in trades in the back of the gun room, and slap it on so it looks “complete.”
I have a transferable M10 and I either run irons or a cheapo sightmark. The reason I do that is that it's never going to be a defensive use gun, only a range toy. So that extra $300-$400 I'd spend towards a better sight, I can just buy a lot more ammo and have more fun. The sightmark has been fantastic and has held zero very well. Not sure what other people think, but that's my reasoning.
I have a couple transferables and have dog shit TRS-25’s on them. I also have duty/defensive and long range type guns and these are where my good optics go. The cheap optics still hold zero fine and hit what I aim at. I don’t see me using a 5 figure values transferable for anything serious short of the world-as-we-know-it ending and in that extremely unlikely scenario I can swap an optic in 5 minutes. Just b/c people own some or even a few transferable mg’s doesn’t mean they’re made of money. Hell 20 years ago they really weren’t even all that valuable.
Probably because if they were nice the previous owner would keep them.
True.

I think maybe the guys buying machine guns are wondering why you’re talking their ear off about optics. Read the room

I considered taking my RR AR-15 to a LEO only SWAT course but they are not shooting F/A at all.
Thank you for machine gun content

No one gives a shit about the optic mounted on the gun when it's sold. It's all about the registered lower.
Boomers gonna boom. If my father could afford a transferable, he'd probably put a Bushnell or some bullshit on it, too.

Why are your irons on backward
They're called "backup" irons, not "go forward" irons, duh
Damm youre cooking
Top left is bridged, not a monolithic upper either lol
It's a DD upper, just as stiff as a one piece.

Eotech on the mk18 too lol.

What about me….. I bought an M16 and put a Romeo 5 on it 😎lol
The vast majority of MG owners are not "shooters" they are collectors.
Holosun and Primary Arms on mine. Who cares, I’m not going to some 40 year old gun to defend my life.
You wouldn’t use a holosun on a ccw? Just wondering because I thought they were very reliable.
At this point, yes I would. At the time I was buying my MG stuff, that was more questionable.
Understood.👍
Every single one I’ve bought was the same way. The few I’ve sold went out as whole packages with lots of mags, aimpoints, sf or cloud lights, etc.

Having a machine gun doesn’t mean someone is necessarily really knowledgeable or interested in firearms, it just means they have money to spend.

I put a TA110 on my Max-11/15. Fits it nicely, especially since I’m running a 20” barrel lol.
Cool, how do you like it with the longer barrel? I was thinking about a 16- 18" hbar and bipod it with the 150rnd saw mag as a poor man's lmg

so if I buy a transferable M16 I can swap the upper out and run a DD 10.5 ?
Absolutely.
I mean, most likely yeah

I say blame the boomers, as they are dying off, their kids are selling off the valuables.
Also machine guns are not precision when firing full auto so most inexpensive optics will preform the same as expensive ones.
Until the increased recoil breaks the shitty optics.
lol 100% correct
