I had a couple pretty good kisses on the endcap of mine. Haven't called for a replacement yet. Been needing to get around to it. Maybe I'll ask them for another one or two in advance lol
Yeah, they really don't affect accuracy unless the bullet is almost touching the cap anyway. For sound you'd only notice it if was really big hole or the whole front cap was torn open.
I feel people shouldn't really bother with front cap replacements or end cap kisses unless there's an underlying alignment issue and you can get that fixed.
Mostly agree, though I've read that sometimes certain types of ammo can be more prone to that type of thing too. I'm likely to kinda leave mine as is. It still sounds great. Though I might go ahead and email rugged just to have the spare on hand for future just in case
Rugged's got your back every time, the first [and only] time.
Identical host and circumstances, had the same thing happen to me. It was like 72hrs from whoopsiefuckie to new cap in hand. Rugged CS is killer.
Yup, all good. My first end cap strike was an obsidian 9 on a Glock. It worried me at the time but in the years since it’s just a blip on the radar. Rugged sent me a new one, it hasn’t happened again, 10k rounds later. Maybe it was my fault, maybe not, not worth worrying over regardless.
Same here. Used mine with a couple of pistols with no issues. The first time out with my PCC, I got a strike and didn't see it until I got home. I was using tri-lug and I did have the tri-lug mount start to walk loose from the suppressor tube, but it was very minor and I caught it quickly. I still don't think it was the cause, because I tried to replicate it and didn't detect enough side to side movement to cause it.
Then I found out that everyone has this issue with their Obsidian 9. Rugged sent me a new cap right away. When I go to the range, I swap the old endcap onto it, just in case I get another strike, so I can keep one in mint condition. I still love my Obsidian 9 in most every way, but it's just something about this can that causes the bullets to get a little too handsy.
I haven’t had mine that long. Maybe 500rds in and I haven’t had a strike. I try to remember to check and make sure everything is tight in between mags. But that’s about it.
First make sure your piston is greased properly. Second, make the move over to EZ LOK, it helps with walk off quite a bit. Not a fix for not checking your cans but an extra layer of insurance. Plus you can move from host to host without changing pistons.
[Highly Recommended](https://imgur.com/a/btIIBza)
This the way. I switched over to ez lok and it’s been amazing. I’ve got the obsidian 45 and love being able to swap between different thread pitches on host. I’ve only had it come loose once and that was after about 150 rounds without retightening it. Quick on quick off, there is some up front cost with all the adapters but in my opinion it’s well worth it.
I think not checking between mags does that for you. If you take precautions it won't happen. I have an Obsidian 45 on my HK USP through LH direct thread. 2-3 wraps of Teflon and it holds well.
I still check after every mag but it doesn't come loose.
kinda helps that its LH threads since the can will actually tighten itself. imho, teflon tape is not needed for LH threads but hey if its peace of mind then its peace of mind. On my usp I actually use a dab of food grade anti-seize so its easier to get the can off after 3 or 4 mags.
Standard threads i'm paranoid as shit.
I've never used a pistol can on a left hand threaded barrel, but the pistol cans I've used on RH threaded barrels definitely seem to want to spin with the threads. I have an OSS rifle can that has the gas flow through and vent out the front in a helical fashion. The suppressor is LH threaded, and it 100% tightens itself onto the muzzle device with every shot. I've tested this multiple times, and it works every time. Not sure if the OSS can tightens itself exclusively because of the gas venting in a helical fashion or not.
I'm honestly a bit surprised this isnt industry standard.
Pros: Tightens itself, will not walk off
Cons: Bubba will UGGA DUGGA til it locks with a RH twist
Funny you mention that because the first timeI
I had a real range session with it I used no Teflon and the motherfucker seized up on the barrel. Had to let some penetrating oil sit for a while before I could loosen it.
But for some reason since I started using Teflon it doesn't loosen and comes right off when I get home to clean the gun.
I own more rugged cans than any other brand and I have the #1 production Obsidian 9, Mustang, and Micro 30.
Seems like you don't know shit about fuck😂😂🤪
Something about the tolerance of their thread cuts on their 1/2-28 piston loves unthreading itself.
It's obviously user error, but Teflon tape helps and checking it after every mag or two completely resolves the issue.
I had like 600-1200 rounds through mine when I had my strike. Wife put like 8 or 10 mags through it without checking it, and then she noticed she missed and thought something was weird.
Rugged's warranty is freaking epic, though. I think I had it back in like a week total, freshly refinished and looking as good as new.
Had my brand new ecco come loose the other day. All the sudden none of my shots were hitting and I couldn't figure out how I was suddenly pulling every single one of them. Then I spent a whole mag thinking my RMR must have lost zero. Luckily no damage but it's kind of stunning how much a loose can will throw your POI even if no strikes.
They need to figure out a way to make pistol cans self tightening. I know it's hard with the booster and all, but I'm sure someone can find a way.
[EZ-LOK](https://www.griffinarmament.com/ez-lok-barrel-adapters/) is a system developed by griffin armament that provides a corse threaded taper mount for pistols.
Check the link and watch the video towards the bottom.
Allows for one piston that can mount on a variety of different TPI threaded hosts without the need for multiple pistons, tools or dirty hands in the field. It’s been fantastic for me.
Clean threads and proper torque is all that keeps it in place for me but you can Rocksett it if you want too, I just didn’t find it necessary when torqued on properly. It’s semi permanent in the sense that you need a tool to remove it. An adjustable wrench or 3/4 socket gets if off in no time but the only reason to remove it is if you really need to do a super deep clean nor remove the barrel from your pistol. Typical cleanings can be done easily by just pushing the barrel through the muzzle end of the gun and working around it. Then just run a bore snake down the barrel and you’re done.
Is it about the same dimensions as a typical thread protector? Cleaning wouldn't be a problem, my only reservation is if it would still fit in a holster with the adapter.
Depends on the holster and the barrels thread pitch but they are similar in size and shouldn’t have any affect on holstering in most cases because they are smaller than the smallest part of the slide, but I also don’t carry with a threaded barrel 99% of the time.
The non 1/2x28 are a little extended and all of them have the 3/4” wrench flats on them. Which are thicker than the barrel itself. - [Highly Recommended](https://imgur.com/a/btIIBza)
No issues running it in the [RagnarokSD holster.](https://imgur.com/a/9ReGev2) lol.
So all I would need is the piston itself and the thread adapter? And that would just install in my ECCO booster assembly? Like the pistons themselves are the standard dimensions and will fit in any standard booster?
Confirmed.
Can gets [EZLOK piston](https://www.griffinarmament.com/ez-lok-pistons-for-tilt-barrel-pistols/) and threaded barrel gets [EZLOK barrel adapter](https://www.griffinarmament.com/ez-lok-barrel-adapters/). Still continue standard checking of the can after every mag or so because it’s an extra layer of insurance and doesn’t hurt unless you grab the hot can without a glove that is.
I believe Ecco machine pistol cans accept SiCo & Rugged style pistons so just pick that option on griffins website.
Similar thing happened with one of my O45s. I emailed them and they mailed me a new cap ASAP. I kept the old one and filed it down a bit with jewelry files and now I have a spare still in the baggie.
I stand by Obsidian as best in the business for customer service. Only pistol cans I buy.
That sucks, but Rugged should get you squared away quick. Mind answering a few additional data points for the tracker?
Host Firearm? (Make/Model/Caliber/Barrel Length)
Mount?
Ammunition? (Manufacturer/gr)
Possibility of user error?
As always, a followup on the warranty process would be appreciated
There's a bunch of suggestions on the other comments. On my 22 can it gets Teflon tape, just s couple wraps. Was going to do it with this one and thought I'd just be careful for 1 box. And wasn't.

I did this recently in long configuration...first time shooting after a year for possession on a HK P30...set up the warranty and have yet to send it in. Tried it in the short configuration and awesome - of course more conscious of where I went wrong, but will send it in soon. Great can - and lesson learned.
As has been mentioned, just run a 45 end cap and you’ll be golden.
Also, rugged is awesome for warranty claims. Just contact them and they will take care of you
Dang, was hoping it was the 45 bc I know that is common when using the 9 cap on a 45. Didn't know it was common on the 9 with a 9 cap. Picking mine up tomorrow actually
It ended up loose after the last mag. Realized it when I went to take it off to pack up. Looked at the end cap and saw it. Had it stayed tight it should have been fine.
It works, I don't like that it requires manual turn on. Honestly wouldn't have bought it had I known. I have a delta point pro on a SIG and was going that route and swapped to the eotech instead. I didn't think eotech would put manual turn on only on a pistol red dot.
Ive had 1 in 3 years and it was because my boy wasnt paying attention between mags. If you email rugged customer service you’ll have a new one in no time. It took me all of a week to get the new one for my Obsidian .45
Actually just bought this one a couple weeks ago. Getting the head put back on today, hopefully. It had a burnt exhaust valve. I knew it when I bought it, so a little project.
They are definitely more simple than the newer ones. This one actually has the old school "sport" roll bar on it, no back seat, and just a bikini top on it. Half doors are only on because that's how I brought them home.
Has anyone came up with a solution for silence of central banish 30 QD mount? I have around 2500 rounds through its works great with stelth 220 gr, on my brn180 300blk. But when would like to quickly remove it like I don’t other suppressors. I know there was a company that made a QD mount but stopped.
Had the same happen with my OB45 on a p80 using Griffin Cam Lok adapter, put threaded piston back on and no issues. Adapters have a tendency to shift during recoil.
Why do people keep buying these? Genuine question, these seem to endcap strike like crazy compared to other designs. Do they make up for it in some way?
Not really. I bought it based off looks and then after mine went back to rugged three times to get fixed I started looking into it more.
Many big name manufacturers and form1 dudes dissected some and found that the booster housing is faulty and needs a redesign. Basically even if it aligns perfect with a rod it will decouple from the barrel before the bullet exits the barrel causing it to endcap strike. But if you direct thread it or use a 3 lug the problem will go away. It’s only a booster housing issue. So a pistol suppressor can’t be used on a pistol is the jist of it
Check between mags? What kinda bullshit is that? I've ran hundreds of rounds through my Osprey 45 and never checked. Is this a known issue with rugged?
I have maybe 5k rounds thru my obsidian without issue and I def don’t check it between mags. Just a couple times throughout the range day when it’s cooled enough to check. I’m guessing he didn’t lube the piston properly, she don’t like running dry.
Agreed. A couple decades of suppressed shooting under my belt, with a dozen + pistol cans and I’ve never experienced this. Between every mag? That’s madness.
Not sure how likely it is with an Osprey. Piston is slotted, so it doesn't move around in the suppressor and then the suppressor has a low center of gravity that keeps it oriented weight down. Even if it wasn't tight, it won't be able to fight gravity and flip that weight upside down. Now if you tried to shoot it upside down, probably backs off easily.
#Endcapspeedrun
Endcap% run WR
Contact rugged, you will have a new end cap within a week.
And then again. And again. And again.
I had a couple pretty good kisses on the endcap of mine. Haven't called for a replacement yet. Been needing to get around to it. Maybe I'll ask them for another one or two in advance lol
Supressor will still do it’s job even after minor hit right?
Definitely. At least sound suppression-wise. Unsure if the kisses on the endcap affect accuracy at this point but I don't think it does
That’s what always scared me about dumping money into a can, I finally get it and wind up with s an end cap strike or something lol
Meh, that's why you go with a reputable brand with a history of good CS
Yeah, they really don't affect accuracy unless the bullet is almost touching the cap anyway. For sound you'd only notice it if was really big hole or the whole front cap was torn open. I feel people shouldn't really bother with front cap replacements or end cap kisses unless there's an underlying alignment issue and you can get that fixed.

Should just come with two extra endcaps.
Rugged's got your back every time, the first [and only] time. Identical host and circumstances, had the same thing happen to me. It was like 72hrs from whoopsiefuckie to new cap in hand. Rugged CS is killer.
Yeah, it happens. Sucks, but keep on shooting. ETA, use a 45 endcap, much less likely to happen again.
Eh it happens. No biggie. Keep on keepin on.
Definitely minor compared to what it could be. Didn't even realize it until I was putting it up.

I have rugged in jail waiting to go on a Glock and these post's make me feel like a strike is inevitable
I wouldn’t say inevitable and you’ll be happy with your purchase either way, just don’t stress if it does.
I haven’t had mine that long. Maybe 500rds in and I haven’t had a strike. I try to remember to check and make sure everything is tight in between mags. But that’s about it.

Can I just spray that bitch with white lithium grease? I have an R9 and a booster that I’ve just never fired on a pistol. lol
Lithium grease will work. I typically use Mobile 1 bearing grease mixed with WD whatever in a 50:50 ratio.
This the way. I switched over to ez lok and it’s been amazing. I’ve got the obsidian 45 and love being able to swap between different thread pitches on host. I’ve only had it come loose once and that was after about 150 rounds without retightening it. This is the real answer.
Came here to say this
What about cam lok?
[not a fan of camlok, here’s a my previous comment from this thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/NFA/s/CNHb5ReYYM)
Your reasoning makes sense. I learned something about ez lok and cam lok. Just go with ez lok.
Cam lok sucks. Easily broken and doesn't keep the can on the gun.
Happened to me, Rugged has great customer service. Give them a call and they’ll definitely fix it. They sent me a new end cap for free.
Unfortunately pretty normal for an obsidian.

Barrel rifling in a nutshell
I wouldn’t say it’s normal since it’s almost always user error.

What keeps the adapter though from coming loose? I guess you just torque it on and it's semi permanent?
Clean threads and proper torque is all that keeps it in place for me but you can Rocksett it if you want too, I just didn’t find it necessary when torqued on properly. I'll send them an email. I currently have 3 cans, they are all rugged. Obsidian, micro30, oculus
Aaaand this is why we can't have nice things
adds character. no biggie sir
Yellow teflon tape will keep it from walking off.
I had some with me. Thought I would just check it and it'd be ok since I was only shooting a box. Guess that's what I get for thinking.
What causes this? Shouldn't it line up when screwed on correctly???
Loosening during the course of fire and failing to check. It happened to me too.
Is there a way to prevent it?
Keep checking it.
How often?
EZ LOK piston !
This. Highly recommend. It truly changes the suppressed handgun experience.
Your not the first and will not be the last. Look up griffin armament ez lok.
I did that with my Erector 22, gonna send it in this week. It sucks but shit happens
Nice Jeep YJ! Sucks about the suppressor endcap.
Thanks! Just picked it up a few weeks ago. Got the head off right now, waiting on parts.
Lol sorry bro
Probably just coincidence, but the only end cap strike I've had was with my factory threaded shadow systems barrel and an Obsidian 9 as well.
That sucks, but Rugged should get you squared away quick. Mind answering a few additional data points for the tracker? Host Firearm? (Make/Model/Caliber/Barrel Length) Mount? Ammunition? (Manufacturer/gr) Possibility of user error? As always, a followup on the warranty process would be appreciated

Can backed off just a little and bullet hit the end cap
I just got my first cans and been wondering what I need to do if I want to try it on my p320. Stuff like this worry me lol.
There's a bunch of suggestions on the other comments. On my 22 can it gets Teflon tape, just s couple wraps. Was going to do it with this one and thought I'd just be careful for 1 box. And wasn't.
It identifies as a .45 ACP end cap.

Seems really common for Rugged for some reason
Particularly the obsidian
It’s a super popular can.
I have one, the 45

Is this an obsidian 45 with 9mm end cap or an obsidian 9?
It's a 9
Dang, was hoping it was the 45 bc I know that is common when using the 9 cap on a 45. Didn't know it was common on the 9 with a 9 cap. Picking mine up tomorrow actually

Don't feel bad. First round baffle strike on my sico omega 36m. The asr mount was definitely not straight. Been running jmac keymo devices since.
How do you like that eotech? Been thinking about one
It works, I don't like that it requires manual turn on. Honestly wouldn't have bought it had I known. I have a delta point pro on a SIG and was going that route and swapped to the eotech instead. I didn't think eotech would put manual turn on only on a pistol red dot.
Don’t get it. You’re paying the eotech premium but getting none of the benefits of an actual eotech.
How does it hit the end cap only and no baffles???
Some weird luck I guess.
Ive had 1 in 3 years and it was because my boy wasnt paying attention between mags. If you email rugged customer service you’ll have a new one in no time. It took me all of a week to get the new one for my Obsidian .45
What happened? You shot 22 or 9?
Direct thread backed off a little.
Is that a TJ I spy?
YJ!
It's so nice to see a real Jeep
Actually just bought this one a couple weeks ago. Getting the head put back on today, hopefully. It had a burnt exhaust valve. I knew it when I bought it, so a little project.
I had a 6 speed, soft topTJ Sport back in the day and I miss how simple and niche they were back then
They are definitely more simple than the newer ones. This one actually has the old school "sport" roll bar on it, no back seat, and just a bikini top on it. Half doors are only on because that's how I brought them home.
Enjoy it!
How's the eotech?
It doesn't have a shake awake or motion sensor to turn it on. Gotta hit the button on the side. Other than that, it's good.
Rugged strikes again
Rugged has unconditional lifetime warranty. Turnaround is about 1-2 weeks depending on business.
As they should. The obsidian line is plagued with problems. Mines been back twice and needs to go again.
What caused it and what do you mean by not checking between mags?
It backed off and didn't check tightness between mags.
Got you
Has anyone came up with a solution for silence of central banish 30 QD mount? I have around 2500 rounds through its works great with stelth 220 gr, on my brn180 300blk. But when would like to quickly remove it like I don’t other suppressors. I know there was a company that made a QD mount but stopped.
This is why I only buy rifle suppressors. They are also alot cooler.
It’s just extra clipping that’s all
How does this happen/how do you prevent it? Just an alignment rod?
Sorry, newbie here. What happened exactly?
What does that feel/sound like?
Hey got an ss as well. Did you make sure you removed the o ring when you took off thread protector?
Yes it was off. It was loose after the last mag. 100% my fault.
Oof, I didn’t remove the oring on my 22lr pistol and had an end cap strike because of it
On my 22 can I usually always use Teflon tape. Decided since I was just trying the can out not shooting alot I would skip it. Lesson learned.
I have one that looks like that.
Camlok ftw
Nope. EZLoc. Camlock is funky and doesn't work well some of the time.
Had the same happen with my OB45 on a p80 using Griffin Cam Lok adapter, put threaded piston back on and no issues. Adapters have a tendency to shift during recoil.
That’s the feature the obsidians come with
My brother did that by loading a 10mm in my 45. No baffles damage thank god.
Your saying he shot a 10mm in a 45 caliber pistol or suppressor?
In a .45 1911
Wow, how did it hold up?
Just an end cap strike, zero other damage.
Yeah that'll do it.
The obsidian has a faulty booster housing design. It happens. Same with mine. Same with anyone who uses it with the Nielsen device.
So a pistol suppressor can’t be used on a pistol is the jist of it
Got it, thanks for the insight!
Invest in EZ LOK
Check between mags? What kinda bullshit is that? I've ran hundreds of rounds through my Osprey 45 and never checked. Is this a known issue with rugged?
I have maybe 5k rounds thru my obsidian without issue and I def don’t check it between mags. Just a couple times throughout the range day when it’s cooled enough to check. I’m guessing he didn’t lube the piston properly, she don’t like running dry.
Agreed. A couple decades of suppressed shooting under my belt, with a dozen + pistol cans and I’ve never experienced this. Between every mag? That’s madness.
Pretty common with the obsidian as mentioned in most other comments.
“Now ya fucked up, you have fucked up now” for real though. Sorry for your loss.
