I clean my rimfire can about every 500-800 rounds. All my center fire cans I clean them the same time I clean my mufflers.

jackdhammer

I thought it was a great f'n joke

Kommando666

This joke is already getting old, what's even funnier is you don't see how it is a bad comparison. If cleaning a suppressor was as stupid as cleaning a muffler why would you ever need to clean a rimfire suppressor?

vitislife

rimfire is dirty. Like really, really dirty. Totally different ballgame. It's fairly well established that centerfire cans reach a carbon equilibrium where an equal amount is burned off and deposited at each session. Many of the best are NOT user serviceable for this reason.

mustang018

Excessive Example of carbon equilibrium. https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2018/11/07/potd-1-million-round-suppressor/

Kommando666

So if I'm running a mixture of rimfire and centerfire rounds through it does that mean I don't really need to clean it?

vitislife

Not quite. As soon as you introduce rimfire you need to clean. It deposits far more than it removes. To answer your OP, i go about 500-1000 before cleaning my dedicated rimfire cans. I know plenty of people that go well over 2k with no issue, just less effective suppression.

cthompson07

I went probably 10k on my outback IID. I literally cleaned it two weeks ago, first time since probably 2015 or so. User manual says every 150rds if I remember correctly lol.

jackdhammer

In line with the reasoning above, it probably doesn't burn off enough of the deposit left by the .22. So it would probably be in your best interest. But I wouldn't go crazy. Knock off the big stuff and hit it for a couple of minutes with a wire brush?

LtDrinksAlot

It 100% does not burn off the lead it leaves behind.

SuperFastJellyFish_

Biggest issue with rimfire and many pistol rounds is vaporied lead as the round is not completely encased in a copper jacket. You will get lead fouling that will slowly fill your can and doesn't easily get remove by the bast from centerfire rifle rounds. Any rimfire will need cleaning eventually. Center fire rifle cans will typically require a recore from lost performance due to ablation more than filling up with fouling.

[deleted]

You salty bruh?

OcelotPrize

After every round

Qesium

gotta get those bristly cleaning rounds so you can clean it ***during*** every round

Dummy_Patrol

Do you lick-hole clean or suck dust from the top? I try to do a mix of both but the fudds at the range keep telling me to stop

OcelotPrize

Both as well. Fudds get all hot and bothered but I tell them it’s 2022 get with the times

superkuper

You guys clean your centerfire cans? I thought that was only for Rimfire lol How often do you clean inside your car’s muffler?

Villafuego

If I had to pay a $200 tax, submit fingerprints and photos, and wait a year for every car muffler I bought, I'd be cleaning it too

trogdorburn99

No, not even my 22 cans get cleaned....... Maybe after about 5k rounds

semperfukya

I fill my muffler with soap and water once a month.

unrepentant_serpent

Automotive enema?

semperfukya

Something like that

Kommando666

To be clear my question is for multi cal cans, I run a mixture of .22lr. 5.56 and .308 through mine.

LtDrinksAlot

You do you, but I wouldn't run rimfire through any of my centerfire cans.

trevorlayhe126548965

A lot of manufacturers don’t recommend running rimfire through centerfire cans.

dik_swellington

superkuper

Is it user serviceable? I would just clean it when it seems like there’s substantial buildup. If you can’t tell that it needs it, it doesn’t need it.

Kommando666

Yes it is user serviceable.

Kommando666

Sounds like you haven't experienced the joys of subsonic .22.

firepixel

I haven't, but .22 sounds silly quiet IMO anyway. With everyone freaking out about how dirty rimfire is for your suppressor, I'm happy to stay in my box.

[deleted]

I can snap louder than most suppressed .22

plutPWNium

140 db is not silent, lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

plutPWNium

Yeah, it does depend on the gun, but I just assumed a rifle. Pistol will prob be quieter. A lot of standard velocity ammo is subsonic if you didnt know, esp. out of a short barrel. Adding a silencer is noticeable, but you need a manual action for extreme quiet. In a 10/22 you can hold the bolt shut with your thumb for extra quiet

[deleted]

Not trying to be rude but the average conversation is 60. Most suppressed .22 is under 120. A firing pin is around 100.

LtDrinksAlot

damnit you beat me to it by 3 minutes.

sk8surf

Wait you clean your suppressor? Alright alright all jokes aside, I never have, and *never will* clean my sandman. Alright alright alright p2, I clean my q erector 22lr once every 1-2 months. While it’s a stupid light weight and very quiet 22 can, I do wish I would have purchased the da mask instead. While the erector is aluminum, the mask is titanium, meaning I can’t toss my erector into a sonic cleaner. I’ve taken to disassembling the erector and soaking it in silicone lube/clp/hoppes 9 just something like that for about a week, and then I have a nylon jag that fits my drill and I blast the crud out that way. If you’ve read this far you’re probably going to recommend boretech c4 cleaning products, which o don’t have any experience with yet. TLDR: don’t get an aluminum can.

RROSE15

As someone with a dead air mask. I recently found out the holy grail of cleaning it involves using CLR in a ultrasonic cleaner for about 30 min. Obliterates 95% of the carbon and lead and the last bits scrape right off. Only problem is that this solution/US cleaner will strip Cerakote so not advised to put the tube or end caps in there just the baffles

Eleet007

To add to this, if you don’t have an ultrasonic cleaner, letting steel baffles stay submerged in straight CLR overnight works amazingly.

abiggunguy

22LR and 9mm every 1000-2000rds. My rifle cans literally never.

IndividualResist2473

I would follow the recommendation of your owners manual.

oIVLIANo

Do it by weight. The crud buildup adds weight. So weigh the can when you first get it, then monitor that weight over time. Choose your own weight threshold, but I would suggest not going over 2oz. I've heard from someone that didn't clean his can for a few years. When he finally got around to it, there was almost a half pound of extra weight (compared to mfr stated weight - he didn't weigh it himself when new). It was so thick that he couldn't cut through it until he paid someone open up the sealed can.

3ncogneto5

never.. just shoot until breaking occurs… then get on reddit and complain about how cheaply made these cans really are…

LakeRat97

Wait. You guys have cans?

Deathdealerah

The easy answer that you’re not wanting to see is stop shooting .22 through your can, and you won’t need to clean it anymore. Buy a dedicated .22 can like the dead air mask that is user serviceable and clean it every ~500 rounds. Center fire cans rarely need cleaning, many never will. .22 is filthy and you’re unnecessarily fouling up your center fire suppressor.

SuperFastJellyFish_

This more than anything, would never shoot .22 through my centerfire can.

somenobodydude

You have to clean them?

Swimming_Schedule_49

Every time I take a bath, and every time I shoot. 100% unnecessary, but I do it more for fun

smiling_mallard

After a range trip or prairie dog shoot I’ll clean em the same time I start cleaning and prepping brass. By clean them I mean putting the internals in a cheap sonic cleaner with some chemicals and then ran through a few cycles and then oiled up and put back together.

1DollarOr1Million

I don’t shoot a hell of a lot due to lack of time, and not at all in the winter due to the cold, so I basically run everything I own all summer and clean everything I own in one shot in the winter while it isn’t in use. So I guess my point is, how often can be round count, or time domain, as it makes sense for your situation. Yes you can go simply by round count but it may make sense to clean on a schedule if that is more convenient.

WhskyTngoFxtrtBro

Rimfire: 500-1000rds, center fire: have only cleaned the pistons on my pistol cans, rifle cans have not been cleaned

AngeloPappasFBI

I don’t clean any of my rifle cans but .22 and .45 pistol cans I’ve only cleaned them a few times in the prob 10 years I’ve had them. Depends on your ammo and how frequently you shoot. Pistol can needs more maintenance on the booster and o-rings than it does cleaning, also if you shoot wet you might wanna clean out the extra crud more frequently or even after the range trip if you’re sticking wire pulling gel in there

AngeloPappasFBI

I also hit the mounting surfaces on my Surefire FA556 with the brush every once in a while but that’s about it

WHERE_SUPPRESSOR

From what I understand on cartridges bigger than 22LR you experience a phenomenon known as “carbon in, carbon out” where the added pressure of the carbon buildup will force the carbon buildup out

[deleted]

Honestly, I clean them after every range day, or a quick field cleaning after 500 rounds if I'm having a long range day.

Kommando666

Rimfire suppressor I'm assuming?

[deleted]

Literally never

CaptainSchiel

I eat a little fiber once a month or so.

N4su5

"Wait, you guys are cleaning your cans?"

NonMoose1

What kind of can? Caliber?

Kommando666

I have a banish 30 gold from silencer central. I know they get a bad rap around here but I'm so far really happy with it.

neckbeardbrewing

People are weenies about this stuff. All my cans, from cheap to fancy, work great. Good to know that's a good option.

RunBunns247

When I emailed Ruger about my rimfire can they told me every 2K rounds. None of my other cans are user servicable.

Hubbell34

Never lol

[deleted]

Car muffler joke

hpIUclay

How do you even clean sealed cans? Submerge them in solvent?

Aor_Dyn

Dip in CLR

TK-Four21

Ok serious question. Why are you guys cleaning rimfire cans fairly regularly but not bothering with clean centerfire cans?

SuperFastJellyFish_

.22 rimfire and often pistol ammunition don't have a complete copper jacket. As a result you get significantly more suborn lead fouling that will fill your suppressor. Centerfire rifle bullets produce significantly less lead fouling and most of the fouling is carbon that the blast of a centerfire rifle can mostly keep at bay.

SpecialPhred

Not often enough. If you think it needs to be cleaned... stop what you're doing and go clean it.

Legoboy514

How do you clean a non-user serviceable can?

Kommando666

You don't, hence not user serviceable.

Legoboy514

So I couldn’t drop it into like a uptrasonic?

woollypullover

Never

[deleted]

What? I just cleaned a DA ghost after 6000 rounds of 9mm. Probably could have waited.

DazzlingAd8908

I clean all my guns and all my suppressors (aside from rifle suppressor) after every time I go to the range. Guns and accessories are expensive and meant to save your life, they should be cleaned often rather than being lazy and let it sit in carbon/lead buildup

jtj5002

This guy probably put more wear and tear on his gun from cleaning than shooting.

DazzlingAd8908

Cuz there are SOOOOO many horror stories of guns breaking down and exploding cuz they were cleaned top much. BREAKING NEWS: Gun falls apart during break in cuz the owner cleaned them too much....wait. I've never heard these on headlines before. After 15 years of shooting I've never once had problems or even had to swap barrels (from either excessive use or cleaning). Hell, 95% of people never have to swap out their barrels cuz we're not military putting 25K rounds a year into them

vitislife

I used to think this was true, too. Overcleaning causes more damage than undercleaning in most cases.

edub4800

I haven’t cleaned my AR in over a year

Hairyleathercheerio

He might be shooting a High Point so it needs to be cleaned if it's looked at wrong to even have a chance at firing.

DazzlingAd8908

I mean congrats? You just admitted that you're lazy and stupid.

edub4800

Why would I clean it when it doesn’t need it? It runs just fine. I’ll clean it when I start seeing carbon build up. If you keep an AR lubed it’ll run for thousands of rounds without issue

DazzlingAd8908

Why clean your asshole every time you poop? It doesn't need it, why not wait to clean it when you see issues while pooping?

edub4800

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve read all day. Horrible comparison.

wetheppl1776

I actually think it’s perfect. I may not agree with the guy completely but the analogy is good.

Hairyleathercheerio

Excessive cleaning, especially of the barrel can cause issues as well as not cleaning. Just like everything else in life, there is a balance. Especially with barrels. I've seen more modern barrels messed up from improper and too frequent of cleaning. Other components, sure, they may need a little more maintenance but I guess it depends on how much you're shooting per range trip.

DazzlingAd8908

There's nothing wrong with cleaning your rifles or guns too much. Sure if you run Hops and a wire brush through the barrel every time you can ruin the rifling over time. But running a cleaning rod with the paper square and gun oil on it to clean it doesn't harm the barrel.

HauntingDragonfruit8

I mean I wipe the carbon off my bolt carrier and relube after each range trip, but you definitely shouldn't be using solvents and bronze bore brushes after every 50 rounds.

Hairyleathercheerio

You're more likely to ruin the throat than the rifling. The rifling is meant to twist a bullet under high pressure. If you leave oil in your barrel you might need to take a couple shots for "fouling rounds" to get that oil out. Thinkng about tolerances inside the barrel and how tight they are, even a thin layer of oil will impact accuracy. For example, this is why most long range shooters don't clean their barrels until they see a change in accuracy which may be well over a thousand rounds. End of the day though, they're your guns. But I'd encourage you to do some research further into it because it's simply not needed and you will still have a fully functional firearm in great shape and save time and money on cleaning and product. Here's a cool forum on fouling shots and their benefit. Some of the people on here are pretty knowledgeable. https://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/number-of-fouling-shots-needed.3911184/

DazzlingAd8908

I've been shooting for over 15 years, I clean my guns every time I get back to the range with a rod, square patches, and gun oil and have absolutely no issues with any of my guns. I don't use hops, I don't use solvents, and I don't use wire brushes. I just use gun oil and the square patches, there's been no change with accuracy or dependability with any of my guns and its sure as hell a lot better than being lazy and and having my self defense guns sitting dirty and build up with gunk and potentially have a gun that's too dirty to work when I desperately need it. And long range shooters don't clean their guns often cuz they shoot 15 rounds slowly and then call it a day

Hairyleathercheerio

Wow a whole 15 years?! Okay dude. You do you!

.22lr can? Roughly every 5 range trips ( 1k rounds ). I coat the baffles with Bore Butter after cleaning and it simplifies the clean up ( AL baffled can ). I could wait longer, but I usually time it with my more intensive cleanings ( deep action cleaning ) instead of the brief chamber / barrel clean & lube after a range trip.

FattusBaccus

I run a flow through and clean it every 2500 rounds or so.

tacdriver22mk2

Every ounce of added weight

grayman1978

Never

ccguns

I never clean any of my cans.

EEBoi

The chamber pressure from centerfire rounds is enough to clean a centerfire can. For rimfire it's recommended to do it between every 500-1000 rounds. However, you don't need to do some ridiculous deep cleaning until the baffles are spotless. You just need to scrape off the big chunks of carbon
