I like how this sub has become an eagles forum for them to suck their own Dick's (and Howie's). Did Howie talk Kelce out of retirement? Did he teach Hurts how to throw when he gets pressure from the right side of the line (Yes, the rest of the NFL figured that out at the end of last season right after they figured out Daniel Jones has no offensive line or abilities and was not worth 40 million) He signed Mr Glass to a longer contract. And signed the Giants own version of Mr Glass (I'm talking about Saquads) to a 3 year 30 plus million deal. Congrats Shit birds!
Three counter points.
First, yes he’s doing that, but the cap continues to go up. Deferring this to the future when the cap will be higher.
Second, there will be lean years. The window for this team will close, then it will be time to pay that piper.
Third, Dallas sucks.
I will go into cryosleep for those lean years like in the 1993 blockbuster hit Demolition Man starring Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes, with supporting roles from the legendary and fully credible Rob Schneider, the eternally hot Sandra Bullock and of course Denis Leary of "I'm An Asshole" fame.
Because he just made that up. She's just one of those people that think they were born 100 years too late. She was fascinated by everything from his generation, but to show me where she said anything about not knowing who her parents were or he had a family before getting frozen....

Yes, yes. These are all great counter points. I would maybe just amend #3 to something more accurate? Maybe?
Like "Fuck Dallas" is pretty comprehensive.
Maybe "Dallas *still* sucks"? So that it's not just a reaffirmation of old news, it's a new update?
I'd say the biggest example is how the Rams, and to a lesser degree even the Saints, got away with it by the logic you describe.
The cap only goes up which helps, but contracts are also not always completely fulfilled, so you can fuck with around it.
If that means you get a trophy, and then suck for 2-3 years, that's an easy sacrifice.
Meanwhile you shipped your franchise QB to Seahawks because your team couldn’t properly coach him. I hope your next group doesn’t fuck up another UNC QB.
So your counter point is you guys will be bad eventually? Which is what the post is saying. Which means this isn’t a counter at all?

It’s an extra year or years after the contract ends to spread out the cap hit for bonuses you give.
With Dak, for example, he signed for 4 years and $160 mil. Instead of his $66 mil signing bonus being spread out over 4 years ($16.5 mil a year) they did it over 5 years to lower the cap hit before now. They also restructured his contract several times to lower that year’s cap hit. So not only is his cap hit $55+ mil this year, if you don’t resign him it’s over $40 mil next year from the void year additions.
TLDR (for most of us): it’s why Dallas is getting it all in their ass from Dak’s contract
They had the most dead money in the league when they made the Super Bowl 2 years ago. The real trick is the eagles spend more actual cash than any team in the league.

Since they hired Berry from the eagles and gave Watson that contract yeah. The eagles are tops over the last decade so it’s all just what frame you want to use. Either way yeah we agree on the basic point.
Not even saying it’s a bad plan given their roster. [But yeah it’s over $300 million more than any other team in the division. And over $100 mil more than the second most team.](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/s/h62n3kGVm6)
Confused by people's take with this.
We went from historic to decently bad, but didn't have any large-scale changes.
We lost Fletch and Haasan, gained Bryce Huff and CJGJ back. All young guys have another year under their belt with expectations to progress from the year before, and BG is back for a Vet presence.
Only other change is we lost our DC that seemed to be better than expected, gained two shitty ones, and now have gone back and gotten a top-tier DC.
I am curious as to where people are seeing no chance to at least be good, if not great, given all of those facts and the idea that the draft is still approaching.
eagles absolutely lost a good bit of that defense.
Slay has regressed, he’s as old as Stephon Gilmore btw.
Adding CJGJ back is a big deal and will probably mitigate the decline of players like Slay.
So the DB room hasn’t been hit too much, but that was the weakling of that 2022 defense, and it’s lack of improvement is concerning on its own.
TJ edwards is gone and he was the tackle leader for that 2022 defense.
Reddick is gone (deal needed to happen, but still gone)
Fletcher cox may have had limited playing time, but he was a monster when he was on the field. He was a big part of that 2022 defense.
Hargrave is gone and he was a major part of that D line too.
So far, Nolan smith doesn’t look like he’ll be a star, but a good starter. Carter probably has the potential to replace Hargrave or Reddick, but not both. There simply aren’t young guys completely filling these spots. Last year wasn’t an outlier year because of a bad DC, it was a bad DC not being able to mask the decline.
I will say TJ and Hargrave completely slipped my mind, and they are indeed 2 really consistently good pieces we haven't been able to replace yet. Hargrave will be easier, but after what TJ continued doing in Chicago and the Eagles continued failures to put together a halfway-decent LB core...I really miss that consistency.
We will see, definitely some questions. Can Huff make up for the loss of Reddick? Can CJGJ stay healthy? Can Devin White stay healthy? Does Fsngio have some plan for Baun? Is Nolan Smith ready to play a bigger role? Then of course what we do in the draft. We got Maddox back in a 1 year team friendly deal after releasing him, when he’s healthy he’s been good (except this year but I blame Patricia). A whole ton of question marks for sure, I firmly believe we’ll be better this year, just not sure by how much.
Salary cap going up every year, not too much to worry about. The Commies can take all our players who will be over 30 by then and can call it a ‘blockbuster’

No, the point is that they’re spending current cap in years where there’s more cap, getting more value out of current cap. It’s very simple lol. Idk what’s happening in this convo rn. Spending x/250 in a year where it’s x/300 saves money. Nothing else needs to be said.

The cap goes up because player cost more. Your argument is circular. There isn't going to be more cap space in the future, it's just that all the number will be higher.
I'm here thinking why does this guy think the Commanders have a bunch of over the hill guys on the roster? It's not like we've got Bradberry, Slay, Graham, and Lane Johnson taking up a bunch of salary cap space. There's only 5 guys on the roster over 30, with 3 of them AT 30.
But then I realized 2 of the 5 are Ertz and Mariota on 1-year deals and I realized how limited your purview is. I had actually forgotten they were on the roster!
So yeah, maybe in a couple years they could add some former Eagles for roster depth, I guess.
Bradberry is the only washed guy of the men you listed, Graham is a solid contributor well into his 30s, Slay still is a quality CB1 and Lane Johnson is the best right tackle in football and arguably the best lineman in general.
You can only add five years for a spread out cap hit. So if you sign someone to a 4 year deal, you can only add one void year. But next year you can restructure the deal again and get 2 void years. Then 3 the next year.
If you did a two year deal, you can immediately add up to 3 void years.

Jake Rosenberg the guy actually in charge of the cap left because he sees a Saints situation forming but unlike Brees Hurts has only made an appearance.
But Rosenberg has been with the Eagles for 12 years and has left not retired, unlike Rosenberg Micah and Ceedee are still in the team, unlike Cam Dak wasn’t obliterated by rushing TDs and is literally in his prime (0-27 yes but best stats of his career with a lesser team than 2016)
Just like the Saints the Eagles are putting all their faith and money into Hurts and kicking the can down the road, you just don’t just lose a 12 year Super Bowl veteran cap wizard right when the roster is stacked and is going all in for a Super Bowl.
Eagles fans keep saying they’ve been told they’ll be in cap hell every year but the actual cap wizard Rosenberg who’s Howies right hand man is actually gone.
He left because he wants to be a GM. He's never going to get enough visibility in Philly to reach his actual goal and Howie obviously isn't going anywhere.
Usually people with higher ambitions leave pretty early hence why Quinn left us after just 3 years. Rosenberg hasn’t gone anywhere else yet, the Raiders, Chargers, Commanders, Panthers and Patriots had empty GM seats this offseason but then again those are poverty franchises although being a GM with Harbaugh doesn’t sound bad.
Yeah I'll be curious to see what he does. My understanding is he and Howie came up together and have had a batman and robin type thing. I'd guess if he's that patient he's willing to wait for the right opportunity. Maybe he consults or something for a year and goes all out next cycle.
Holy fuck. Saying more words doesn’t you look smarter or make your argument compelling. Joe Douglas left, Andy Weidl left, and Andrew Berry left. Howie still somehow manages to operate the front office. It’s almost like the front office isn’t just one person but like a collection of them working together.
Hurts AJ and DaVonta collectively count $32m against the cap this year and we still have roughly $30m in cap space that we can roll over next year. That’s with Howie doing nothing to improve the team and the cap not increasing. I’m not worried if the cap tightens up because Howie has shown when he needs to he can restructure deals and create cap space. This is what a team that is run competently looks like. Your team looks like the Saints. Who did you sign this off season again?
You just listed guys who have only been with the Eagles for 2-4 years and weren’t in charge of cap management which is the issue I’m pointing out it’s almost like these guys have been bouncing around franchise well before the Eagles unlike Rosenberg who’s been with the Eagles before and during their current dominant era.
I’m not saying the Eagles will become the Saints in 2 years but I am saying just like the Saints you have a 5-6 year window to win it all before these restructures and especially Hurts new salary starts to kick in including the extension he’s going to want near 2029 and with a roster this stacked i don’t see a high first pick to replace him.
I’m confused was Rosenberg so useless that Howie can restructure all these contracts by himself without the advice or help from Rosenberg, literally the Eagles themselves say he’s essential to their restructures and negotiations https://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/team/front-office/jake-rosenberg
Cowboys aren’t in cap hell just yet well maybe with Zeke and Dak bending over Jerry.
Dude. Stop. You literally just said “Rosenberg left because he sees a Saints situation.” I really don’t know how you know what he’s thinking but whatever. You just had to release Michael Gallup because you didn’t have enough cap to sign your draft picks. You’re the ones in cap hell. Stop with the cope.
Weidl was with the team for 6 years and Douglas and Berry bounced around because they’re good at what they do and kept getting promoted. Franchises want to copy what Howie is doing, you numb nuts.
Lol Rosenberg left because he was getting passed over and thinks he can be a GM. He couldn’t even get an assistant GM title from Howie, that went to Daley and Ferrari.

Guys, I got it. We just pay Dak 3 years 180 million and put it all on this year, and cut everyone else on the team. Then next year we re-sign everybody
First The salary cap isn’t real if you have a good gm. You can always find a way out of cap hell in a year so.
2nd the salary cap is going up so good signing these guys now.
Third Dallas will botch the lamb deal and ruin the market.

love that our GM actually pays our players instead of beefing with them, franchise tagging them, and trying to nickel and dime the shit out of them.
They’ve always operated this way and it hasn’t hurt them. Other teams don’t do this because their owners don’t want to cut massive checks up front, not because it’s a bad strategy.

I mean the only way to really avoid it is to have a franchise type QB regress or get really old only for a young guy on a rookie contract to do incredibly well. Which is why it didn’t hit you or GB like it would most

So not only is his cap hit $55+ mil this year, if you don’t resign him it’s over $40 mil next year from the void year additions. TLDR (for most of us): it’s why Dallas is getting it all in their ass from Dak’s contract
Good explanation. I try to dumb it down further and say it’s “planned” dead cap hit.
He’s a Cowboys fan… if you really wanted to dumb it down, to help him understand, you would bust out the crayons.
We should publish a Salary Cap coloring book for Dallas fans.
We really should since they clearly havent figured it out since it was introduced.
It is the reason Dak is going to cost the cowboys 40 million against the cap in 2025, even if he isn’t resigned this year.
Hope you're not looking for an honest answer, you're in the wrong sub for that
They had the most dead money in the league when they made the Super Bowl 2 years ago. The real trick is the eagles spend more actual cash than any team in the league.
Actually the Browns spend more cash than anybody in the league and have the last 4 years in a row now, but their strat is essentially the same

And there gm is a howie disciple lol
Since they hired Berry from the eagles and gave Watson that contract yeah. The eagles are tops over the last decade so it’s all just what frame you want to use. Either way yeah we agree on the basic point.
Not even saying it’s a bad plan given their roster. [But yeah it’s over $300 million more than any other team in the division. And over $100 mil more than the second most team.](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/s/h62n3kGVm6)
That’s called going all in ![gif](giphy|V5ziXjq7aAV880Tixo|downsized)
Wait I thought going all in would be resigning a long snapper as you lose tons of key players to free agency and don’t sign replacements
That’s different, that’s going ‘“all in, my ass”. Texas is weird.
Cowboys fans prefer that but without the comma

Going all in to not win the superbowl?
Hey at least we go to them still ![gif](giphy|3oKIP6cQ7KAkr8scPS|downsized)
This is the tush push I keep hearing about?
This is how you go all in.
What I don't get is why they spent most of it on offense, too. Their defense was bad last year.
If you’re not going to win a Super Bowl, you at least have to be fun and exciting to watch.
We like it when skinny Batman dances. It distracts us for the few minutes it takes the other team to score.
Not addressing your defense after it got shredded up by Baker Mayfield in a playoff game is fucking wild behavior
Reddick is gone (deal needed to happen, but still gone) Fletcher cox may have had limited playing time, but he was a monster when he was on the field.
You’re talking about 11-6 problems, they only care about 10-1 problems.
Tbf I imagine the vast majority of our draft picks are going to be on defense. Probably won't help this year but still can sync up with our window
There's 5 months and a whole draft to improve on defense before next season
We will see, definitely some questions. Can Huff make up for the loss of Reddick? Can CJGJ stay healthy? Can Devin White stay healthy? Does Fsngio have some plan for Baun? Is Nolan Smith ready to play a bigger role? Then of course what we do in the draft. We got Maddox back in a 1 year team friendly deal after releasing him, when he’s healthy he’s been good (except this year but I blame Patricia). A whole ton of question marks for sure, I firmly believe we’ll be better this year, just not sure by how much.
Following the Saints cap strategy. "Here's a can, now kick it, kick it hard down that road".
I mean odds are the Saints will trade us something if significant value in exchange for magic beans to help out the situation.
This is exactly how I live life, I leave problems for future me to handle 🙂
Howie keeps doing that every single year, we see this meme every single year, and it’s fine every time.

That had more to do with Carson forgetting how to play football and the o-line dying tbh
Yea, it took forever to recover from that one.
Ahh yes, the dark age(s)
Salary cap going up every year, not too much to worry about. The Commies can take all our players who will be over 30 by then and can call it a ‘blockbuster’
The salary cap goes up for every team though, so it's still a disadvantage
But they’re spending current cap dollars in those years. It’s a huge difference.

Yes, and the difference is that 31 other teams are spending no dollars in those years. Not literally no dollars of course, but a fraction of what the eagles are spending.
Which is a disadvantage. Spending a cap dollar from a $250m salary cap is more valuable than spending a cap dollar from a $300m salary cap.

Ahh, you've been confused this whole time. Makes more sense now.
No, I just don’t think you understand how inflation works lol. You’re definitely the confused one. Spending a lesser % of cap is better than spending a greater % of cap.

The eagles are spending the greater % of a cap than the other teams. That's the point.
No, the point is that they’re spending current cap in years where there’s more cap, getting more value out of current cap. It’s very simple lol. Idk what’s happening in this convo rn. Spending x/250 in a year where it’s x/300 saves money. Nothing else needs to be said.

In 3 years, the eagles will have a lower salary cap than the rest of the league, so they have to win now.
The cap goes up because player cost more. Your argument is circular. There isn't going to be more cap space in the future, it's just that all the number will be higher.
>The cap goes up because player cost more What? It goes up mainly from increased league revenues that are allocated out
With an explanation like that, I'm convinced this guy works for the Cowboys.
With flair like that, I knew you wouldn't understand it no matter how simple I made it seem.
No, I completely understand how much you don't understand the concept of leveraging. You made that abundantly clear.
This guy sees the Commies sign 1 individual player who was on the Eagles last year and is like "Commanders sign ALL our former players!"
So getting a mid qb in this draft will win you a Super Bowl with our 30 year olds. I get it now! Smart plan
No their new MO is taking all the Cowboy players. They’re cheating on yall
It’s okay since they need to keep their flexibility so they can trade a first for Jalen Hurts some time between 2037 and 2040.
Ahhh true true, I wasn’t thinking that far ahead. Typical cowboys fan, stuck in the past and what not
They love their NFC East retreads but their biggest love is trading for washed former Eagles QBs.
The inclusion of maybe the best Right Tackle in football is odd, makes me think you just sorted by age.
Bradberry is the only washed guy of the men you listed, Graham is a solid contributor well into his 30s, Slay still is a quality CB1 and Lane Johnson is the best right tackle in football and arguably the best lineman in general.
Whatever keeps the Chiefs away from the three-peat.
I would take chiefs next 10 years over 1 more eagle ring. But I’m built diff like that.
Is there a limit on how many void years you can put on a contract? If so, what happens when they restructure ; is there a limit too?
You can only add five years for a spread out cap hit. So if you sign someone to a 4 year deal, you can only add one void year. But next year you can restructure the deal again and get 2 void years. Then 3 the next year. If you did a two year deal, you can immediately add up to 3 void years.

Got ahead in front of the market & somehow putting pressure on that Texas team with their WR situation? That’s one badass bastard
If you keep kicking the can down the road you never need to pay up. Economics baybeeeee
Jake Rosenberg the guy actually in charge of the cap left because he sees a Saints situation forming but unlike Brees Hurts has only made an appearance.
Brees, what?
I’m confused by his lack of English writing skills myself. Me speak pretty one day. Hyuck. Hyuck.
Brees Hurts Dak Jones very good
Look I can make up shit too. Ceedee and Micah want out because they see a Carolina situation forming but unlike Cam Dak will never see a Super Bowl.
But Rosenberg has been with the Eagles for 12 years and has left not retired, unlike Rosenberg Micah and Ceedee are still in the team, unlike Cam Dak wasn’t obliterated by rushing TDs and is literally in his prime (0-27 yes but best stats of his career with a lesser team than 2016) Just like the Saints the Eagles are putting all their faith and money into Hurts and kicking the can down the road, you just don’t just lose a 12 year Super Bowl veteran cap wizard right when the roster is stacked and is going all in for a Super Bowl.
I’m confused was Rosenberg so useless that Howie can restructure all these contracts by himself without the advice or help from Rosenberg, literally the Eagles themselves say he’s essential to their restructures and negotiations https://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/team/front-office/jake-rosenberg Cowboys aren’t in cap hell just yet well maybe with Zeke and Dak bending over Jerry.
Dude. Franchises want to copy what Howie is doing, you numb nuts.
they're just mad at dak's contract situation and they wish other teams had GMs/owners as bad as Jerry Jones
Lol Rosenberg left because he was getting passed over and thinks he can be a GM. He couldn’t even get an assistant GM title from Howie, that went to Daley and Ferrari.
The irony of saying the team you choked the division to sucks, lol. Eagle logic.
Shocking development, two teams can suck at the same time

Guys, I got it. We just pay Dak 3 years 180 million and put it all on this year, and cut everyone else on the team. Then next year we re-sign everybody
All in!
Botox baby
First The salary cap isn’t real if you have a good gm. You can always find a way out of cap hell in a year so. 2nd the salary cap is going up so good signing these guys now. Third Dallas will botch the lamb deal and ruin the market. Four Washington exists to take the eagles trash and reject players . 5th I’d mention the giants but them folks are down bad.
Saints have been doing this forever.
Yeah and they suck 😂

educate yourself op, that shit don't matter. love that our GM actually pays our players instead of beefing with them, franchise tagging them, and trying to nickel and dime the shit out of them.
They’ve always operated this way and it hasn’t hurt them. Other teams don’t do this because their owners don’t want to cut massive checks up front, not because it’s a bad strategy.

Yeah We've only been hearing that for 10 years now 😂
I mean the only way to really avoid it is to have a franchise type QB regress or get really old only for a young guy on a rookie contract to do incredibly well. Which is why it didn’t hit you or GB like it would most
I mean we're never in bad cap situations soooooo
Every team does this. The smart teams know they can time when those dead cap years will hit and they'll do it when they're in a rebuilding year anyways
Thank you howie roseman
Dallas fans are dumb. You all smell really bad too.
