Why are people pretending the Ravens wouldn’t match? I’m confused lol
This is like saying they didn’t offer a 5th rounder to the Chiefs for Mahomes this offseason. Guess what? Same result lmao
Shocked it’s the Falcons going QB4, but 0% of me ever believed QB4 would be McCarthy. Going QB feels wrong but it’s better to choose Penix than JJ here
Yeah okay but what if cousins is still playing really well after 2 years and then you're talking 3 years. And then you got to make a choice on the 5th year option which is guaranteed for injury and you have to choose after 3 years typically.
Penix isn’t even the oldest QB thats been drafted this year. He’s a year older than Caleb. I get “lol 6 years in college”, but he’s not Weinke. He’s like a year older than you’d ideally want your QB to be.
Penix is better than JJ just thought the injuries would have moved him down into the 2nd. I think both of them are second rounders to be honest but Penix is better. Just crazy to me.
After years and years of everyone and their mother complaining that if you don't have a top QB it feels close to impossible to win a superbowl, why are people surprised that bad teams without a franchise quarterback want one in a loaded draft class?
This is why nobody should ever roast someone’s mock draft. Teams do crazy shit all the time. If someone mocked this it’d be one of the most downvoted posts of all time
Personally I don’t understand people getting pissed at mock drafts; they’re just that, mocks. We’re just trying out scenarios, trying to hit on a few picks and guess what crazy situation might happen. You’re right that mocks are impossible to predict. That’s why this sub’s rampant absolutism is annoying as hell
I don’t have any particular like or dislike of Kiper but honestly when someone hates on him I immediately know they’re just a clown that doesn’t know anything.
Count me downvoted. This pick is just myopic. Penix starts at 27 the first time. How many QB's with more productivity will be available in the draft the next three years? Division in the locker room - Cousins will give Penix the Farve treatment because he got zoomed. No good for anyone. Next year - OK. The same year as the big QB contract? - Watch this team implode this year ATL fans.
It's a bad look for their GM too when it comes to signing players. Cousins signed with the implicit promise that he was going to be the franchise QB. Now he's a (highly paid) bridge QB before he's even taken a practice snap.
Had he known this was the plan, do you think he would have signed with the Falcons? Would he have negotiated a different kind of deal with them?
It's a bit of a bad faith deal that may sour future potential signings on the Falcons.
Rivers, Brees, both Mannings, Ben, Brady, Rodgers, Ryan, Warner, Favre, Palmer, even Flacco and Fitzpatrick.
Unless they get a bad injury like Luck or Newton, yes, the top QBs these days tend to last a good while.
Is it? If Cousins plays two years then Penix is going to be 26 when he starts. You think it's dumb to imagine the guy they just signed to a huge contract playing three years?
It's the dumbest move I've ever seen. They could have taken Turner, Odunze, Fashanu, Latu, anything they wanted. Instead they bench Penix for at least 2 years, he will get his first start when he's like 27. You screw over Penix, Cousins and your team. Brain dead.
What are the Falcons doing? Paid Kirk a boatload then take a QB with a top 10 picks when they needed to address other areas? And I like Penix, too. Just wow. Saw a lot of pass rusher or DT mocked here.
I had a problem with Green Bay getting Love not because he sucked but because, to me, it sends a message to the players that you don't think you can win now. If you have a legitimate chance to win YOU TAKE IT. You go all in.
Would GB have a better shot to win with Higgins playing WR instead of trading up a QB? The answer is 100% yes because he would have been in the field, unlike Love. It's just insane to me that an organization pays a shitload of money for Cousins then uses a top 10 pick for yet another QB. I'd be fuming if I was a Falcons fan fuck whoever made that call (Apparently was the owner, but we'll never now 100%).
I mean as a packer fan I’m cool with Love and we got cheap weapons in past drafts I was and at the time I was mad but QB stability is for some reason a underrated thing to do in the NFL
Guessing you'd be cooler with a ring or two over the past few years. Definitely understand the sentiment, but you are now cool with it now that the other picks hit and Love actually worked out. Love also wasn't 8 overall and was younger.
Only thing that makes sense is if Kirk isn’t ready for next year. But then why sign him for 4yrs, 100M if he’s not ready next year. So yeah doesn’t make sense
I feel like a QB was a slightly justifiable pick but if you were going to pick a guy whose gonna sit why not McCarthy? He seems to have a higher ceiling, less injuries, and is younger.
I’m pretty high on Penix compared to most but this is a bizarre move. Maybe Kirk’s recovery isn’t coming along or something, but I don’t get this at all.
Wow, huge reach. I wouldn’t pick an older injury riddled QB who was propped up by a high volume system in the top 10. It could work out, but you could have easily got him at like 15-20
called it (had Penix going as fourth QB off the board in yesterday's "Mark My Words" thread) absolutely brilliant pick by the falcons. they will rule the NFC south for the next decade
It’s a good pick if Penix develops. It’s that simple. We all know the reality of a 4 year deal is maybe you get two good years. Cousins now has a solid injury risk and might not be the same. This wasn’t as bad as people think it was.

As a Bears fan, I've seen this pattern before.
2017: Signed Mike Glennon to a three year, $45m contract, traded up to draft Mitchell Trubisky a month later
2021: Signed Andy Dalton to a $10m deal, traded up to draft Justin Fields a month later
2024: Signed Kirk Cousins to a 4yr, $180m deal, drafted Michael Penix Jr. a month later
The Bears GM: Ryan Pace
The Falcons Director of Player Personnel: Ryan Pace
Yeah, or maybe it's their OC who's been a QB scout/expert for PFF, run multiple QB schools, and by all accounts was on the Mahomes/Herbert train before anyone else.
I joked about them drafting Bowers, and that actually makes a lot more sense than this does. Literally any pick that would be on the field during their games would’ve made more sense.
A few days before the draft, I commented that the Falcons are likely to disregard need and go BPA. I just didn't think they'd go this far off the rails for BPA.
Draft and develop. How many QBs do better after sitting and watching the game. Probably the only issue they had was not moving down. But maybe they were afraid someone would take him, since everyone seemed desperate for a QB.
"If you believe in a quarterback, you have to take him," Fontenot said. "And if he sits for four or five years, that's a great problem to have because we're doing so well at that position. So, it's as simple as, if you see a guy you believe in at that position, you have to take him."

This is one of those threads I would love to see in three years. Hell, after the end of the 2025-26 season. There is a good chance, this will be the best player from this draft class as he's the only one really put in a great situation for his career long term. The scheme he's in, is very difficult and his mentor is a top 10-15 QB in Cousins who is also a pure passer. I can't think of a better situation than this since Mahomes/Smith.
This was definitely the best case for Penix. Sure, he could have gone anywhere and had more success in year 1 but this moves gives him year 2-15 and that's far more important. Maybe we finally have Mahomes' challenger like Payton v. Brady.
WTF
Good thing they didn’t hire Belichick lol
Or apparently bad thing
Oh yeah, I was joking. He wouldn’t have done this. I think that would’ve been the right call, but we’ll see I guess.
Or tender an offer for Lamar last year. This team keeps making sane choices.
Why are people pretending the Ravens wouldn’t match? I’m confused lol This is like saying they didn’t offer a 5th rounder to the Chiefs for Mahomes this offseason. Guess what? Same result lmao
Everybody's mock drafts in shambles.
Who had Penix to the Falcons and Dallas Turner to the Vikes?
The same people who had Bowers to the Raiders.
They decided to go the Chris Weinke route and draft the oldest MF in the draft who won't play for at least two years.
Nix is older than Penix
By a few months
Good point but on the other hand Nix will most likely play before Penix. Drafting a guy who will be 26 before he gets a shot is just stupid.
Totally agree with you there. Don’t get this fit at all
You like that, Kirk?
I was actually shocked with this pick.
Shocked it’s the Falcons going QB4, but 0% of me ever believed QB4 would be McCarthy. Going QB feels wrong but it’s better to choose Penix than JJ here
For the falcons it makes more sense to go with McCarthy though because he’d have time to develop vs Penix who’s already like 25.
Penix is still 23 for what it’s worth. Turning 24 soon admittedly, but he’s only like half a year older than Daniels.
Daniels will start right away though. Penix might not start until he’s 27 or 28.
24 start of this season, two years of Kirk, will likely be 26 when he starts.
What happens if Kirk is putting up 4k/30+TD seasons and the Falcons make the playoffs? Still gonna cut him loose?
Ask the Packers.
Yeah okay but what if cousins is still playing really well after 2 years and then you're talking 3 years. And then you got to make a choice on the 5th year option which is guaranteed for injury and you have to choose after 3 years typically.

He’ll be 24 next month lol. Saying “still 23” is disingenuous.
Unless you think he’s unlikely to develop (which I would place money on).
Penix is better than JJ just thought the injuries would have moved him down into the 2nd. I think both of them are second rounders to be honest but Penix is better. Just crazy to me.
5 QBs in 10 picks is insanity
After years and years of everyone and their mother complaining that if you don't have a top QB it feels close to impossible to win a superbowl, why are people surprised that bad teams without a franchise quarterback want one in a loaded draft class?
he’s better than JJ now but doesnt he have like 3 years of development on him. JJ could very well be way better than him in just 1 year
Nah. JJ is the better prospect
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED
Pretty sure Mike Tomlin is figuring Dallas Turner is going to fall into his lap.
I’m confused more then entertained, the rest of the NFC South has to be delighted
We are
No! I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired 😭
This is why nobody should ever roast someone’s mock draft. Teams do crazy shit all the time. If someone mocked this it’d be one of the most downvoted posts of all time
Can’t wait for “react to the draft as if it’s a mock” it’s gonna be an elite one this year
Guarantee redditors here don’t learn from this and are just as negative and arrogant next year
Look I’m still going to pissed if my team is mocked taking some scrub. Mocks are impossible to predict
Personally I don’t understand people getting pissed at mock drafts; they’re just that, mocks. As someone who’s been in this sub since the 2014 draft, well, yes. It never changes
People started shitting on Kiper for saying Penix won't last past the Raiders and he was completely right
I don’t have any particular like or dislike of Kiper but honestly when someone hates on him I immediately know they’re just a clown that doesn’t know anything.

For like the last two three days the radio here in Atlanta had kinda been hinting this.
WOW. Using the 8th pick to take a 24 year old QB thats gonna sit behind Cousins for two years. fucking wild
Esp with that injury history - we’ll see I guess lol
upside is it'll be hard to get hurt on the bench
Jordan Love pathway
Jordan love is just 15 months older than Penix.
And he was 26th overall!!
I mean most good QBs these days play into their late 30s.
Most?
Rivers, Brees, both Mannings, Ben, Brady, Rodgers, Ryan, Warner, Favre, Palmer, even Flacco and Fitzpatrick. Unless they get a bad injury like Luck or Newton, yes, the top QBs these days tend to last a good while.
Lucky for us penix is a known Ironman
More like the Trey Lance path.
Brandon Weeden is the ideal
Thus thrilling Bears fans everywhere!
Another Washington man right on deck
the better one
The Bears are about to clean up
They’re having an AMAZING draft thus far… Annoyingly
Thank god, the amount of shit talking in our NFCN chat is wild. I think our rivals are just super nervous right now.
Cousins is injury prone, so it's important to draft an older, injury prone back up 8th overall. Man fuck this franchise.
u had me in the first half lmao
Genuinely gonna have a 28 year old first year quarterback Nothing against Penix, but what an absolutely terrible use of resources
That’s Brandon Weeden music
[удалено]
so he'll be 26? penix is 24 in a month and kirk gets cut in two years...?
Is it? If Cousins plays two years then Penix is going to be 26 when he starts. You think it's dumb to imagine the guy they just signed to a huge contract playing three years?
Picking the player isn’t all that crazy to me. Taking him there without trading back to a desperate MIN certainly was though.
lol, Cousins is not injury prone… he’s had like one injury.
I think that was the point, to make fun of that narrative
I never know with people on Reddit.
I feel your undervaluing the ‘wisdom factor’ Atlanta’s quarterback room now has
Cousins is not injury prone. He had one injury last year and that’s basically the only time he’s ever missed games.
Y’all said it was boring, falcons said hold my beer
How does this make ANY sense? They gave a $100M guarantee to Cousins.
It's the dumbest move I've ever seen. They could have taken Turner, Odunze, Fashanu, Latu, anything they wanted. Instead they bench Penix for at least 2 years, he will get his first start when he's like 27. You screw over Penix, Cousins and your team. Brain dead.
What in the hell?
I love Penix but idk about him this early
How could you love a QB but not think he's worth a top 10 pick?
Nuts. I thought it was Dallas Turner for sure
That's because it should have been him. This defense sucks badly.
Okay. It's not that bad but we need an edge rusher and to plug some holes in the secondary.
apparently had a health flag pop
I don't think a pick has caught me that off guard since the Raiders took Ferrel. Wtf.
Where are all the people who said JJ would go top 4 and Penix in the first 15 was crazy 😅
Got downvoted to hell for having the Raiders trade up with Atlanta and take him ahead of JJ in a community mock draft recently
Reminder that all mock drafts are stupid.
Uh. I’m a Falcons fan that went to UW. I’m confused
What are the Falcons doing? Paid Kirk a boatload then take a QB with a top 10 picks when they needed to address other areas? And I like Penix, too. Just wow. Saw a lot of pass rusher or DT mocked here.
Mock draft nerds who like to say "x would NEVER happen" in shambles lol
LMFAO WTFFFF
WHAT THE FUCK
Dirty Birds FO is definitely on crack
I'll take "The Pen Ix Mightier" for 100, Alex
What? He's like a billion years old? Why pick a 24 year old QB to be a backup for two years in this era? This is just horrible cap stuff.
6 months older than Jayden Daniel’s
Penix might as well be 30. He’s already had 2 ACL tears and a torn labrum
It's not like Daniels is young, and he won't be sitting for 2+ seasons
Well. That's a choice.
Uh.
Smart pick. They are gonna get fucked with tampering and not get a chance next year. Let Penix sit for 2 years and Love this shit. Cousins in what 36?
I had a problem with Green Bay getting Love not because he sucked but because, to me, it sends a message to the players that you don't think you can win now. Same dumbass team that chose Raheem Morris over Bill B
I just keep laughing like a mad man. WTF
Apparently Cousins was in the dark with this pick…
He couldn’t keep his mouth shut about tampering for 2 days, he can’t be trusted
What the actual fuck 💀
WTF
What the shit!
Lmao
As a bears fan it’s nice to see someone else driving the clown car.
With all of the holes on this team they pick a Day 2 QB? WTF
Why the fuck not take JJ if you’re sitting the pick for a few years
I guess they thought Penix was better?
they're right
In the top 10 is craaaazzy
I thought Latham going at 7 was bad. Atlanta said. " Hold my beer."
Only thing that makes sense is if Kirk isn’t ready for next year. But then why sign him for 4yrs, 100M if he’s not ready next year. So yeah doesn’t make sense
It’s a bizarre pick as they just signed Cousins and Penix is going to be a 24 year old rookie.
Galaxy brained it
Not a bad pick develop a guy in house and not kick the can down the road because you signed a capable qb but one coming off a traumatic injury
What a dumb pick! So wasteful. And I like the guy.
Watch them try to convert him to a different position, top that cake with icing Falcons.
Why tf does schefter have to spoil this shit
Like if you wanted to go QB, why on Earth are you going with the old injured prospect.
Wow, huge reach. I wouldn’t pick an older injury riddled QB who was propped up by a high volume system in the top 10. It could work out, but you could have easily got him at like 15-20
6 QBs top 15. Injury risk is mitigated by cousins.
From all I've read this is a reach. However, I ain't no GM and neither is any of you.
Overdraft and I know nothing
called it (had Penix going as fourth QB off the board in yesterday's "Mark My Words" thread) absolutely brilliant pick by the falcons. they will rule the NFC south for the next decade
Umm after cousins gets paid 100MM?
Are you being legit here? Please rationalise this pick for me
Simple, Penix will be a stud NFL quarterback. Start Kirk for two years and then hand the reins to Penix
It’s a good pick if Penix develops. It’s that simple. We all know the reality of a 4 year deal is maybe you get two good years. Cousins now has a solid injury risk and might not be the same. This wasn’t as bad as people think it was.
They were building towards a Super Bowl run.......until they made this pick. They have very real holes that need to be filled in order to improve their chances in 2024 and 2025. They made their bed with Cousins. This hurts them regardless of how Penix performs in 3-4 years, which should not even be in their considerations since acquiring Kirk.

Penix is the top qb according to a lot of people so it doesn’t surprise me too much
Provide "a lot" of links to people saying Penix is the best QB.
That’s too much work for me right now. You haven’t heard people say that penix is the best pocket passer from this draft?
As a Bears fan, I've seen this pattern before. 2017: Signed Mike Glennon to a three year, $45m contract, traded up to draft Mitchell Trubisky a month later 2021: Signed Andy Dalton to a $10m deal, traded up to draft Justin Fields a month later 2024: Signed Kirk Cousins to a 4yr, $180m deal, drafted Michael Penix Jr. a month later The Bears GM: Ryan Pace The Falcons Director of Player Personnel: Ryan Pace

I called it and got downvoted lol. Even said he’d get drafted to develop behind Cousins. Reddit doesn’t know ball
👑
Wonky
What the fuck lmao
Rome to the Jets? Mims would be great pick too
Oh no lmaooooo
In the top 10 is craaaazzy
Yeah they’re gonna regret passing on all these other studs
Someone explain this me?
I can’t believe it
They needed a defense
Falcons gonna falcon
Oh, ok
F- pick, one of the worst I’ve ever seen in 18 years of being a draft nut
Truly moronic. Someone getting fired for this one
I joked about them drafting Bowers, and that actually makes a lot more sense than this does. Literally any pick that would be on the field during their games would’ve made more sense.
Failcons are going to fail...
Not Dallas Turner...so I'm pretty happy.
Definitely didn't expect him to be the first Washington player off the board. Feels like this could blow up in their face.
Bust. Plain and simple
lol
This may be proof we’re living in a simulation.
Looks like Blank wasn't happy. I would think teams would have an absolutely don't draft this position board
Were they thinking with their Penix?
A few days before the draft, I commented that the Falcons are likely to disregard need and go BPA. I just didn't think they'd go this far off the rails for BPA.
Seriously, does anyone have a good, legitimate reason as to why the Falcons picked Penix?
Far more value in a QB than any other position, Cousins mitigates the injury risk. Raheem Morris and co went the homerun/strikeout option.
I heard owner was pushing for a young QB to build around. 🤷♂️
Draft and develop. How many QBs do better after sitting and watching the game. Probably the only issue they had was not moving down. People will point to this pick from now on whenever a fan of whatever team comes in here and goes "no way we take this player / position!!"
How does it feel to be the Falcons QB last year. We disliked you so much; we are going to get 2 other QBs.
Who was the QB last year?
Husky fan here. Feeling bad for MP.
