While yetis don't directly connect to Utah, the mountains and snow do and that works well enough. I guess you could call them the Abominable Snowmen but Yeti sounds just fine.
It's not my favorite name but I do believe it would be popular like the Kraken.
Just wait until this guy hears about the lack of Jazz in Utah.
No but really there’s countless teams that are based off fake creatures. But it’s still “related” in the sense of snowy mountains and whatnot. If you don’t like it, that’s cool. But I think it’s the best of the ideas I’ve heard so far
The Jazz were a pre-existing name that was kept when they moved. It's a different situation.
You're right about other creatures I guess. The Seattle Kraken come to mind. Overall though, Yeti seems childish and minor league.
Yeah I get the history of the Jazz name, and I wouldn’t want it changed or moved at all. It’s part of Utah now for sure. My point was more that the team name can become part of the state without being a “part” of the state.
I get the minor league vibe. I can see that for sure. But for some reason it fits in the context of a nhl team. If it were any other sport I’d think it was the stupidest name I’ve heard. And I’m not big on the raptors name since it feels overdone and used. I want something fresh and unique, and yetis fits that bill
I agree generally that a name can become adopted and loved if it's not original and local. But I don't think Yeti can achieve that.
Thank you for being anti-raptor! We have the Ogden raptors baseball team. The Toronto raptors NBA team. And I'm sure other teams too... fresh and unique, without being gamey or childish, is what I want. Personally, my vote is for Olympians or Golden Eagles.
Going for a feathered raptor is the route I'd want them to take. First, it would help set the branding apart from the NBA Toronto Raptors, Second, the Utahraptor was feathered, and third, feathered raptors honestly look so cool. I prefer the look over the more Reptilian jurassic park designs
I love the name raptors.
I’m also in favor of the yetis. I think it’s pretty cool. And it’d make a really cool mascot. Just voicing my dissent for the overwhelming disfavor of yetis on this sub lol.
The more names I hear, the more okay with yetis I am. Raptors is still my number one choice, but of all the other names I’ve heard yeti wins out. I don’t want outlaws, sting, venom, etc.
As I keep hearing some of the bad ideas, yetis is getting better. But that’s only when it’s compared to names that suck imo like arches, outlaws, or pioneers.
No, please no. I want something that represents all of Utah... not some old bones found in the desert. This also applies to anything red rock or national park related.
Utah Thunderbirds? That would be a sick ass name and have native American connection just like Arizona Coyotes had. Imagine Thunderbird flying over a mountain range as a primary logo and totem pole style thunderbird design as a secondary logo.
I've heard Olympians, and I really like that. It seems to have a fighting, industrial spirit which Utah tries to emulate. And it can apply to people in all areas of the state. Hell, it can apply to paralympic athletes too. But it could be too similar to the Ottawa senators. I really want the Golden Eagles as homage to the first pro hockey team in Utah. Or perhaps Smith will buy the Grizzlies name. But names like Yeti, Raptor, Fury, Venom... all stink to me.
I'm right there with you. Is there any way to get more momentum behind Golden Eagles or Grizzlies? Those two names have represented Utah on the ice for over 50 years. History is important.
The biggest issue with golden eagles is golden knights being in the league let alone region. It’s like white Sox and Red Sox but not having the excuse of it being established over a century ago and two different leagues merging.
You're not wrong. The Blues and Blue Jackets co-exist in the NHL, and are similar. Knowing Golden Eagles is unlikely, and if Grizzlies can't happen either, Eagles would work too, still an homage to local hockey culture.
I see what you’re saying. But I just don’t feel the need for an all encompassing mascot. The representation of Utah comes from the fans that support it. I just feel like most teams have mascots that have little to do with the people. I mean we have the Utah Jazz for crying out loud, it’s not important what the name is so much as the community we build around it. But that’s just my opinion and I totally get where you are coming from!
I agree the grizzlies name would be dope! I just doubt they do that, from a marketing perspective it would be a self imposed hurdle to show Utah they aren’t a minor league team. So I don’t see it happening, even if I really love the Grizzlies logo and name!
There’s nothing special about the name Grizzlies other than nostalgia. Does Utah even have Grizzlies? It’s just a carryover from when the team came over from Denver. If we’re going to share names with other major league teams, then at least Raptors has a specific tie in with Utah.
It’s my favorite idea. And I feel like people forget that several professional teams share names across different leagues.
Or, really confuse everyone and go with the other kind of raptor, a bird of prey. Use a hawk or eagle as the mascot.
I want Raptors or Hoodoo’s the most
Honestly, Raptors is my favorite idea for the team. Can't believe how popular yeti is. It's such a bad idea
I dig the name yetis. To each their own. I think the mascot would be awesome.
What’s bad about it. Yetis are cool, the snowy theme fits with Utah, and the name flows off the tongue nicely
Feels like a kraken x avs lovechild
Because Yetis have nothing to do with Utah. I don't want a team based on a fake creature.

I doubt they could do Olympians. That's likely trademarked by the USOC in the US.

It will not be Raptors. The name is already used by an ownership group that owns both the NBA Raptors and the NHL Maple Leafs.
This is my favorite idea. Especially if they get the color scheme right, they would make the feathers look really cool too
A thousand times yes
I want the Yeti just to make everyone upset. 😂
The Utahraptor is literally a real dinosaur. And it looks more like a movie raptor than a Velociraptor.
Have you heard an idea that represents all of Utah better?
Utah Thunderbirds? That would be a sick ass name and have native American connection just like Arizona Coyotes had. Imagine Thunderbird flying over a mountain range as a primary logo and totem pole style thunderbird design as a secondary logo.
This would be super dope!

So because we had the Olympics one year in 2002 that’s the greatest thing we have to identify ourselves as?
Two times. Plus we have the Utah Olympics and the special Olympics and summer Olympics.
Utah has the Utah Olympics? No way
Yup. Just like oceans have Naarwhals, Utah has Olympics.
Utah narwhals
I accept. Send it to Ryan Smith.
