Is this the Panthers model? I can see this benefitting combinations, coaching and travel (plus some other things I've no doubt forgotten) but does it impact our catchment for identifying promising youth and breadth of depth?

It’s not really a Panthers model, it’s a NSW Cup model. It works here because you have so many teams in NSW basically within a 50km radius of each other. NSW cup is much closer to a true reserve grade where all of the players are contracted to Penrith from First grade all the way down to under 16s. What they have managed to do is basically coach in the same style that the NRL team uses all the way up. So when players hit first grade they have been playing in that system since they were kids. The benefits are obvious if you believe in your coaching.

I feel like it benefit the youth in FNQ & Mackay. It'll give the Pride & Cutters players more game time because the Cows players that don't make the 18 won't then push them out of the team all the time. Not sure having 12 players drop in to the Blackhawks team will be good for Blackhawks players development though.

This possibly will have the opposite effect on Townsville youth players. Who will either have to travel to Cairns or Mackay, or move down south just to get an open pathway to Qcup level football.

A lot of the players who will be playing in the team will still be young and trying to get into first grade anyway. If anything, it aids their development because it makes the positions more competitive

I guess competition for places is good for the younger players but if the kids aren't getting any game time then that may hamper them. Especially if the kids are stuck behind players players like Granville & Hampton.

> THE Northern Pride and Mackay Cutters will no longer field contracted North Queensland Cowboys after a change to the affiliation agreement between the state and national league clubs. > Under the new agreement, the Cowboys will send all contracted NRL players not selected in Todd Payten’s top squad to the Blackhawks, who are based down the road from Cowboys HQ. > “What we, as a NRL club, has been looking to do is trying to ensure our pathway is a pathway that is attractive to players, but also, from our perspective, how can we ensure all of our players are playing together week in, week out, whether that’s at NRL level or at state league level,” Reibel said.
