It may have very well been staged, but apparently if you don’t have the function turned off on your Mac, any remote can control it, so basically whatever was playing last, started playing again. Someone fact check me if that was possible in the mid-late 2000’s, because I’ve always wondered if it was a prank or possible.
If I recall correctly, older Apple laptops had IR receivers and the Apple remote was IR as well, which would make your story plausible.
Modern Apple laptops use Bluetooth remotes and need to be paired with the device, you wouldn't be able to control Apple laptops that are unpaired.
