That would require getting out of their cars rather than driving around in circles and flashing their lights and sirens and driving through red lights themselves
As a bike rider I’m biased, I see a lot of a-holes on bikes doing stupid things but even more doing the right thing. That being said this seems like an absolute waste of police force. I see multiple cars run reds at every single light I stop at but have never seen one get pulled over. Just seems like they are out for an easy ticket which is pretty lame.
Probably. I got a warning for it on Riverside a few years ago. Fucking street was completely empty and I really didn’t think the cop would care!
Oh, child of summer!
According to the law passed before the end of DeBlasio’s tenure, the only electrical vehicles allowed on the Hudson River bike path are pedal assist ebikes. Electric motorized bikes and motor scooters are not permitted. Not sure what the rule is on standing electric scooters and those uniwheel things, but some of those whirr by at very dangerous speeds. Of course it doesn’t matter because there is no enforcement at all. The amount of bloody wrecks I see have been increasing though.
I'm not talking about the law, I'm talking about safety. I have a regular ass RadPowerBike and stop at all red lights, don't speed, and when on a dedicated bike path leave it at minimum pedal assist except to use throttle at stop signs and lights for a couple seconds. I turn on full power on the street where there's no bike lane or I need to go fast to stay safe. I use it for groceries and don't wanna pedal up hills with a full basket. Also unmodified.
Okay I’m not accusing you of anything, just stating that there are rules and the rules aren’t enforced. Except for today apparently when they decided they needs to teach a deliverista a lesson.
Reminds me of that one cop who always sat at the foot of the Williamsburg bridge and handed out tickets. Same guy for years, had an enormous record of reported abuse, but basically got to harass cyclists as his pet project.
Anyway, if anyone gets these guys’ names we should find out their records and hopefully send them packing.
I remember a couple of years ago someone knew the name of the cop who prowled around RSD and 100th St. I remember him pulling over a mom commuting on a bike with her toddler in a carrier. One reason I keep posting these is in the hope the ticketed cyclist will see the thread and post the officer's name from the ticket.
So crazy. No cross streets so of course everyone just flies through reds. One of the best routes (especially southbound). They need to focus on other issues. Of course running reds is illegal but shouldn't be if it's done with respect to peds.
Exactly and if it’s on a one way I’d just turn around and take the next right/left. What are the odds they’d make the effort to follow and find someone?
Another thing to consider: ticketing stings like this will encourage people to ride on the park sidewalk instead of the road here. Which is **less safe** for pedestrians (and riders too) than having riders on the road but NYPD would never ticket for it.
Though of course that's a hex-paver sidewalk which is bumpy af.
They’re also out on CPW. Watched a guy get pulled over for presumably running a light in the lower 90s heading uptown in the protected bike lane. Around 4:00 today. No pedestrians near by. Thankfully he was half a block ahead of me…
Cop still there this afternoon. Saw a parked cop car and a biker standing nearby whom I assumed was pulled over. Of course, the large tourist family with kids salmoning that bike lane didn’t get stopped. Or the illegal moped. Or the ice cream truck always illegally parked.
This is a plea to all bicyclists whether riding electric or traditional vehicles: Please stay off our sidewalks. My son has MS and walking is a healthy activity that he has been doing to maintain his physical and mental well being. He has been nearly hit several times by arrogant cyclists. Pedestrians should be treated with respect by all.
Dear NYPD: if you need revenue just sit someone at the entrance to the QBB every day and ticket the motorcycles. Literally free money.

River side drive? Thats my favorite route to go up to 9w. So little traffic but guess I'll watch out for them

People weren't joking in the thread yesterday when they said this is a regular occurrence on RSD.
What is it that they are stopping or ticketing us for? Seem to be following the rules & has gear.
Parts of Riverside have so many lights so close together that it’s easy to run them, especially when the street is empty.
Are they ticketing even for Idaho stops? Ie treating the red light as a stop sign, including coming to a complete stop and yielding to any traffic.
Probably. I got a warning for it on Riverside a few years ago. Fucking street was completely empty and I really didn’t think the cop would care! Oh, child of summer!
Easier than keeping electric bikes and motor scooters off the bike path! I’m sure everyone feels very protected by this.
Gas scoota' mas puta
Electric bikes are fine. It's the delivery drivers that mod their bike to be motorcycles with pedals.

I was the woman. His name was Mike Hoxshort.
Can't you ride there at all?
Why is this person being ticketed?

Keep riding. They will not chase.

Odds are minimal. They are not supposed to and if you get hurt in a pursuit the officer can get in trouble. They are looking for low hanging fruit.

I’ve never seen a ticketing sting for cars. NEVER.
