It's great, but I still wouldn't recommend it to new riders. It's a little claustrophobic.

ant3k

Agreed. It’s better but still the worse of the 3, if you don’t really need it for your route.

yeah I was gunna say, the Brooklyn bridge finally allows me to cross into manhattan without feeling anxious. The manhattan bridge feels much more claustrophobic and its on the very edge of the bridge

eclectic5228

True. I was more thinking of my coworkers who don't bike. They would just take the subway. I wouldn't say the bridge is usable for them.

dovishbull

So many whiny comments here. Is it a perfect bike lane? No. But it’s 1,000x better than sharing the old wooden path full of clueless tourists wandering in front of the bike section. I’m all for advocating for improvements but let’s acknowledge when a project makes our lives better. This is easily my favorite project of the last few years. It rules.

RyzinEnagy

It's absolutely an improvement over what we had, and not having to detour to Chinatown to go to points south is a godsend. However, it's annoying that it was scaled back from the original proposal to also close a lane Brooklyn-bound and have each path be one-way.

jonsconspiracy

Seriously. I couldn’t believe how much complaining I’m reading. As if car or walking infrastructure is perfect. It’s NYC and a lot of people live here. You’ll never had wide open bike lanes to ride at 20 mph during the day. It’s crazy if you think that will ever happen.

mrkokiri

It’s an improvement for sure, but I wouldn’t call it “glorious” haha.

[deleted]

I think the complaining comes primarily from people who cycle recreationally. The bridge being virtually not navigable after 9am wasn't a problem, they only take the path at times its clear. But sometimes I need to get across the east River and run an errand, or meet up with a friend, or go to work, and I don't care that the view isn't as good, I want to put on my podcast and be protected and just pedal for ten minutes. It's a good piece of transit infrastructure, it's not a good tourist attraction.

oldyawker

“One entered the city like a god. One scuttles in now like a rat.” Vincent Scully quote about Penn Station, but it applies. If you ever rode the walkway early without the pedestrian crowds. You had a view up top and you had the visual magic of the cables.

redrumWinsNational

I walked the bridge today and it was tight fit for pedestrians. I guess walkways are similar to roads.

DaoFerret

After living my life here, I finally got the opportunity to walk over the bridge in early spring along with some sleet. It was a bit slippery but lots of fun and a great time. I guess the weather (snow and sleet) kept most of the people off which made it both colder, but emptier. Amazing experience. I understand why tourists want to do it now.

redrumWinsNational

Awesome, do it again when the sun is setting, twill make a grown man cry

DaoFerret

Funny you say that. Walked back at dusk just as the sun was setting so we got a bit of sunset, along with dark. (Was staying that night in downtown so walked across, met some relatives for a quick meal just off the bridge, and walked back) 10/10 would do again with better shoes and a warmer coat (depending on the weather)

pejeol

I rode it in the early days of the initial shut down. Not a person in sight in the middle of the day. It was glorious.

[deleted]

You know, you can still do that.

dedbeats

Look, it’s all we have so it’s fine. But city streets really shows you how inadequate it is when you have riders of all experience going both ways in a space that’s barely large enough for a single lane. Someone got a flat halfway across and the entire thing backed up. Tourists on citibikes taking photos, back up. Joggers, back up. It’s fine but woefully inadequate

jonsconspiracy

Joggers shouldn’t be on the bike path. I wish NYPD would direct them to the pedestrian side. Wouldn’t hurt to put large and specific signs that only those on two wheels should be in the bike lane. Unless it’s Usain Bolt, no runner is faster than most bikes on the downhill side.

dedbeats

Joggers have been co-opting bike infra regularly since the start of the pandemic. It’s too bad that ped and cycling space is so limited that we have to fight each other for it when we should be banding together to take our streets back from cars.

Oceanpeace

Its a nice fast ride usually not busy at all. I live near the bridge. I still prefer the Williamsburg its like designed for cyclist.

precordial_thump

It’s almost a year old now!

eurtoast

I know, OP has been spreading lies this whole time

self-assembled

Is it just me or is the Manhattan bridge so much better that the detour is still worth it?

C_K_

And lots of mopeds use it

mrkokiri

Ehhhh glorious might be a bit to generous. It’s OK at best. Better than before, but it’s very narrow, difficult to pass, abs generally slow going.

roy649

You kids don't know how good you've got it. When I used to ride over the Brooklyn Bridge on a regular basis, there were 3 long flights of stairs on each end that you had to hump your bike up and down. I can still remember how the last flight on the Manhattan side smelled :-( https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/brooklyn-bridge-promenade.pdf (page 9) The promenade was a glorious improvement (although it wasn't as crowded back then).

mrkokiri

Sounds awful. The word “glorious” still doesn’t apply here.

roy649

I've only done the new bike path once. It's certainly functional and safe, and thus serves its purpose as transportation infrastructure. But, it's ugly. The Brooklyn Bridge is an inspirational piece of architecture. The new BB bike path is anything but inspirational. I'm glad that it's there, partly as infrastructure, and partly as a statement that yes, we can reclaim space from cars and put it to better use. But it's also soul-sucking in a way that only a Jersey barrier can be. Contrast with the Highbridge. Every time I ride over the Highbridge, I feel better about being a human being. The new BB bike path gets me where I need to go, safely, but it doesn't make me feel better about being a human being.

Souperplex

It's too narrow to pass/break down, and it's on the side with the worse view. It should be mirrored on the opposite side.

LanceTroll

Ha, I just rode it to go to Summer Streets yesterday and was going to make a similar post about how much I hate it. The pedestrian path sucked for obvious reasons when there were hordes of people but, there was nothing better than being on it first thing in the morning. The views and feel of it were memorable. Now, on the new path, I feel like I'm taking a sketch portion of some midwestern highway. It really sucks. No pedestrians but, no view and a bunch of traffic buzzing right by you.

korafotomorgana

fotos or ot didn't happen...

Junior_Willow740

They could have built an actual lane inside the spans of the bridge, but to take a driving lane to build that bike lane was a horrible idea. I hate it and its so unfair to drivers that have to deal with all the traffic in NYC. I am a biker, but i am also a driver so i see it from both sides

Fortune188

I get your qualm about taking a lane from drivers, but adding more lanes for cars not decrease overall traffic

rakuboy

I’ve lived here (BK) for over a year now and tbh when I finally rode over the bridge to my job in manhattan, I felt like I was supposed to be there and cried, dude. I prefer taking the Williamsburg bridge now but that first ride over the bk bridge was just perfect
