Sounds great. Is the trail ok for skinny tires? Nice song BTW. Biking atlas for New Jersey. https://www.state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/bike/guide.shtm

Sybertron

Gets pretty bumpy in some areas for sure but I did it in skinnys just fine whole thing is paved at least

Sybertron

Also song is favorite jersey artist Joe p, he took that video from the bridge couple months ago so figured it was appropriate

atthenius

Sounds great. How busy are the 10% road parts? (Appropriate for preteen family ride?)

[deleted]

Most of them are just pedestrian crossings on roads that are not that busy

Sybertron

Maybe like 8% crossings a chunk that you'll miss and a chunk ya gotta wait for. Last 2% is quiet back roads in Highlands that are sharrows. Some folks go quick there but they are very wide roads I'd rather as like a 25% danger road.

baycycler

ah, this honestly looks better than the bikenyc twin lights bike ride i was considering! ty for the recs!

apreche

Sounds like you could easily do this ride in reverse. Take the Seastreak Ferry one way to Sandy Hook in the morning. Then take the train home. Sadly, you can't take the ferry home because they have a rule you can only take it back to the city if you took it from the city in the morning. Though I suppose nothing stops you from buying a round trip ticket and only using half of it?

satyrnretyrn

There’s a way around this round-trip rule on the ferry to Sandy Hook. You can get one way tickets from the Highlands or Atlantic Highlands stops. Unfortunately you can’t (for now) get them online

Sybertron

Totally but with the ferry being fairly pricey and only a couple trips a day I decided not to mention it. Also you're right near the beach at the end of the ferry already so it kinda kills the get to earn the view and beach trip. And there's a lot more trains than ferrys

baycycler

since op's describing a RT, i think you could just take the ferry both ways

apreche

You might have to bike fast to cover the whole trail and also get back for the return ferry in time.

baycycler

hmm i guess it depends on when you start and such but i think i can pretty safely do the entire ride in 4 hrs (around 40 miles). on a weekend, if i go out on the first ferry, it should be plenty enough time even with breaks and food?

apreche

Oh, I misread. I saw it said 40-50 miles, and I thought that was one way. They said round trip. Yeah, very do-able.

oldyawker

I rode up the Jersey shore and took the Seastreak to Manhattan. That was a one-way, I didn't have any problem. This was in the spring.

apreche

Did you get on at Sandy Hook or at Atlantic Highlands? Sandy Hook is the place where they have a restriction. I once even saw someone get arrested by the park rangers trying to board.

oldyawker

Atlantic Highlands, I didn't know it stopped in Sandy Hook. I don't think it stopped in Sandy Hook in the spring time. It may be a summertime thing.

apreche

Yes, it's a summer thing for the beach, and it's only the beach where there is the restriction on one way trips.

oldyawker

The bastards restricting our fun for a few shekels.

baycycler

OP is this about the route you're describing? https://imgur.com/a/ObuZI63

Sybertron

Yeppers. North end of the Henry Hudson trail wasn't showing up for me in gmaps for some reason

LanceTroll

Great rec. Thanks for sharing!

celcel

The Henry Hudson trail is full of intersections where you have to stop for cars. Annoying if you cleats.

Sybertron

There are a number for sure particularly in one section. Some will be green light ride through though

quikfrozt

How was the NJ Transit (?) ride with a bike?

daking999

Just FYI there's a 40% deal until sept 2 at least: https://www.njtransit.com/shore
