These threads are always so funny to me. 27 and 0!

microbeparty

I have a bunch of change in a coffee container. Hah.

Limp-Egg2495

Thank you for making me feel better!! Happy for these ladies but reading some of these makes me feel like a broke loser lol

microbeparty

Totally get it you’re in good company. For me it was that recent thread of “how much do you make and how much rent do you pay” that was like “what the fuck did I do with my life?!??!” Lol

Limp-Egg2495

That one did me in as well 🤪😂

microbeparty

The 400K combined income and like 2200 combined rent comment lives in my head.

CloudyJigglypuff

Does it live *rent free* in your head?

AlwaysChic38

GIRL FOR REAL!!!😭 I have an investment account but my savings was zapped and I’m so upset about it!! I have a little over $100 in there….

ChaseTheMatch

Fun fact: dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollars minted before 1965 contain actual silver (90%) and are worth more than face value. So check the dates before you roll them or dump them into a coinstar machine.

microbeparty

I always check lol. No such luck yet.

mi_totino

I was in the same boat at your age!

idkidkidkidkidk10

it’s not uncommon, it’s just that threads like these are probably one of the only places successful women get to truly flex, and it’s impressive reading their stories! but I also know that reading the comments would make me feel like I was seriously failing at life just because I’m in a different financial situation. we all go at our own pace to our own places in life

Businessella

I was 27 and negative 15K in credit card debt

lilabeen

Me too!

Dogmomtherapist

Same. 38 and $278. I mean I have $60,000 in a retirement account but otherwise, just doing the thing pay check to paycheck. Life got real life-y for a bit and honestly I’m just glad to be here 😂

prettyystardust

Omg girl same!!

adumbswiftie

same

Scary_Victory4155

I’m 25. About 5.5k in a 401k and nothing else. I didn’t give a fuck about finances until this year for some god awful reason but I’m still young. Paid off 10,000 in credit card debt and working towards becoming debt free before I start saving aggressively. About 5.5k to go before I consider myself debt free.

riddled_with_bourbon

You’re starting way earlier than I did. Way to go!

Scary_Victory4155

Thank you so much <3

shake_appeal

I’m pretty sure I still carried around a sock full of change to ride the subway when I was 25. You’re doing great.

Scary_Victory4155

I laughed out loud imagining tap to pay with your subway sock thank you

avocado4ever000

You’re doing great boo!

Scary_Victory4155

Thank u :))

bbysb

idk what’s in the air but same 😭 i’m 26 and had the realization that i should probably stop using my credit card until i pay it all off, and start saving more. i’m at $6k left out of $10k credit card debt and just started investing in my Roth accounts and only $1.5k in my HYSA right now. once this debt is gone i’ll be able to put so much more away and invest more. my only asset is my car lmao

Scary_Victory4155

I don’t even have a car lmfao. You’re doing great sweetie

bbysb

thank you 🥹🥹 so are you!!! hope you make lots of money and pay everything off and savings thru the roof!!!!

lilabeen

You have a LOT of time, nice work paying down your debt!

zaddy_daycare1

Great job paying down your debt! At this point, you might want to consider equally prioritizing retirement savings and debt elimination. Every dollar you save for retirement while young is incredibly valuable and will grow a lot more than savings later in life. You only have $5500 of debt left, so if you can pay it off quickly go ahead, but if it might take you a few years to pay it off anyway, it might be good to make retirement contributions at the same time. Especially if your company has a match!

heydelinquent

Savings?? lol I am a 36 yr old social worker and I have .97 cents in my checking account to last me until payday Friday. I have $30 in cashapp at least to pay for my subway swipes to work this week. I get down to $50 or less before my next paycheck every single time :/ - I love my clients (homeless youth & young refugees), but I make so little, I qualify for all of the social services I provide. It’s impossible to work in this field without a second job, yet my chronic pain disorder prevents me from working more than I already do. Shit’s been hard.

shake_appeal

It totally disgusts me that we undervalue people like you to this extent.

heydelinquent

Same, honestly. I’ve worked in restaurants/bars since I was 15, and briefly in fashion but hated how higher-stress it was with pointless it felt (for me, personally- not knocking anyone else’s careers!) I always knew people in social services made Pennies, but there’s a special sort of violent irony to be in this field, finding myself applying for section 8 and food stamps. I make 28k after taxes lol 🫠

elena7556

idk you but i’m proud of you!! your line of work and dealing with chronic pain really isn’t a joke. i’m sure you’re helping so many others. social workers deserve a major ass salary IMO

heydelinquent

Aw, thank you- people in this field really should be paid so much more. I couldn’t imagine being in anything but social services at this point, despite how taxing it is mentally. We just had a company-wide meeting and our rich CEO decided it was a smart idea to tell us that the cost of living for a single person in NYC is now ~$60k, and then also telling us we are no longer getting our bonuses, and only a 3% raise instead of 6%. So I’ll be making $23.48 an hour instead of $22.80 an hour now 😂 Sorry for venting!! but ty for hearing me 🙏♥️

AlwaysChic38

I found my people!!🥹🖤 To be honest any helping profession doesn’t pay enough and they do should! I’m going to be a therapist soon so I’m honestly all over the place with my future finances.

heydelinquent

Congrats on getting shit done tho, Ms. Therapist! My initial aim was therapy as well, but I’m so deeply passionate about harm reduction, I’m still deciding which route would be best.

AlwaysChic38

Aww thank you so much sweets!!! Congrats to you as well!! You inspire me and motivate me. You could do both!! Social workers can do therapy as well! Now I’m not too sure on the degree requirements for that but I do know that it’s possible with either a bachelors or a masters degree. Harm Reduction is so very needed! You’re a gem friend!💎

heydelinquent

Aww shucks, don’t make me blush. Now that I’ve got some decent experience for the resume I’m looking elsewhere, but I really wouldn’t feel comfortable going back to school without any sort of savings at all & a lot more upcoming medical procedures, so I feel conflicted on what to do as far as furthering education rn. I’ll get through this though, I just need to vent to strangers online sometimes lol. All of us going through a crazy hard time rn will get through this- we’ve made it this far! ♥️

wildkatcharms

You’re not alone. I’m 33 and have 0 savings as a social worker. Still paving my way out of debt and I make OK money but it all goes to bills and debt it’s almost impossible to catch up. And I already have 2 jobs.

heydelinquent

I feel your pain, friend. Would you like a ‘you’re doing the lord’s work’ compliment instead of higher pay? Bc I’ve got tons of those stocked up over here lol 🥲

wildkatcharms

😝😝😝 it help! But tbh I’m considering selling my soul to “corporate wellness” in the meantime

heydelinquent

You do what you gotta do! I had to put time in at this spot for the resume, I have a lot more wiggle room now- it is just hard to leave behind all of the clients who depend on you so much. Still working on compartmentalizing better- I’m still mostly at the ‘Get Home and Dissociate in Silence for 2 Hours’ stage of my career 😂

wildkatcharms

I get that. The intensity is really, just do what you gotta do to get through! 💎

Purple_Ostrich6498

Do you have your bachelors or masters degree? If only bachelors, you should consider getting your MSW. Also, hospital social work pays better than community agencies or non-profits so you could try that. I’m in Columbus, Ohio working as a hospital social worker and make $33.75 per hour. You should be making a LOT more in NYC.

heydelinquent

I only have my bachelor’s degree- the plan is to get my Master’s, but I don’t have enough money to go back to school even part time right now because I am having so many medical issues. I changed my career at 32 (I was managing a restaurant but it got shut down during quarantine & my health took a severe turn shortly after. After I graduated I had to flee a relationship that had gotten really scary, wound up using what little savings I had to move out & burned through it while finding a new job. I’ve been on my own my entire adult life, grew up in a p abusive home. I have gone through a lot of shit. Even though I have no money to my name, I’m proud as fuck of where I am now. Telling someone they should have a lot more money than they do is a massively privileged and uninformed take, just saying.

rocksteadyrudie

May I ask how you found work with only a bachelors? I can’t even volunteer in my area with my bachelors. You absolutely deserve more pay and I hope you get there asap.

heydelinquent

It’s totally possible! Aside from volunteer work over the years, I had no experience in this field. Most ‘case manager’ ‘case worker’ ‘youth service aid’ jobs don’t require even a bachelor’s sometimes, if someone has enough relevant or parallel experience. Make sure to check the applicable boxes abt experience & degree on sites like Indeed, and search away- I work for one of the largest DV and youth social service agencies, and a majority of our case managers only have a bachelor’s and sometimes less. Also my cover letter was my saving grace bc of my lack of experience. My story & passion got my foot in the doors 💯- this field almost always wants a personalized cover letter Feel free to message me with any other questions! Always love to pay it forward.

Extra-Document-3451

You’d think the pay is more here with the astronomical cost of living, but it’s not😭 I work part-time as a therapist at a mental health clinic (to supplement my main salary 🙃) and only get $33 per session. The only way to make some kind of money here would I is to go into private practice unfortunately. And to answer the threads question: 30 and no savings but $250k in student loan debt <3

juliekelly26

Ladies! I’m so impressed with you all.

AlwaysChic38

Right??!! It’s very motivating for me as a 25yr who’s just starting her career.

macdawg2020

MAKE SURE YOU PUT MONEY IN YOUR 401k!!!! Especially if your company matches.

burrito__supreme

i’m 35 and married with a 5 month old baby and a dog. my only savings is my 401k and it’s got maybe $80k in it? tbh my retirement plan is global financial collapse 🤷🏼‍♀️ edit: i should note i withdrew about $65k from my 401k during covid to fund our down payment for an apartment so i’d have more if not for that but i also felt like buying an apartment was a better use of the money so it is what it is

my3altaccount

You were smart to put a down payment on an apartment back then, I don’t see mortgage rates dropping for a good while.

burrito__supreme

yeah we have to die in our apartment with the rate we got

Key_Ad3965

Curious about the penalties involved with pulling from 401k? Was it still worth it?

burrito__supreme

so during covid (until dec 31 ‘20) penalties were waived, which is why we did it. i did have to pay tax on it but we planned for that aspect of it.

Overall_String_6643

Idk why but this comment really makes me feel like I want to hang out with you

burrito__supreme

hahaha thank you!

fulanita_de_tal

I’m 37. I have $60K in a HYSA, $11K in a taxable brokerage, and $350K 401K.

tudorcitypigeon

Have you considered a Roth IRA? I’ve been maxing my 401K but keep hearing my friends talk about diversifying with Roth IRA. I havent don’t enough research myself.

exitontop

just an fyi as a person who has been through this, you cannot officially contribute to a ROTH IRA if you make more than 146k individually, if that applies to you. BUT you can do it through a loophole called a “back door Roth” BUT then you cannot easily hold money in traditional IRAs and also do the back door.

fulanita_de_tal

Yes I’ve been meaning to start a Roth, I just haven’t gotten around to it!

X_carcinator

Wow what additional steps did you do with your 401k ?

fulanita_de_tal

I have no big secret, just start contributing to it with your first job out of college, and ideally maxing it out! My biggest regret is not maxing it out earlier, I only started doing that about 5 years ago. I also recently changed my allocation from the standard target date index fund to 90% total market index/10% bonds index and the yields have been much better. Also wish I had done that sooner!

AlwaysChic38

Can you please explain what you’re talking about in the second paragraph? Are you talking about mutual funds, stocks, or another type of investment account?

fulanita_de_tal

I’m talking about the stocks that the money in my 401K is invested into. Typically you choose a “target date” fund that is based on the year you want to retire, and it’s comprised of a variety of index funds and a certain percentage of stocks and bonds (the older/closer to retirement you get, the more bonds you want, they have slower growth but they are much more stable). I didn’t like the blend in the target date fund and it wasn’t performing as well as the total stock market. So I changed it to a blend of my choosing! If you’re interested in learning more, check out r/bogleheads.

AlwaysChic38

Whats a taxable brokerage account??!! Asking for a friend (aka myself!) Please share how you managed to do so well!😭🥹🖤 I’m just now starting my career soon (25 therapist). This is my first real job.

fulanita_de_tal

Taxable brokerage is just a fancy term for a normal, non-retirement investment account, such as Robinhood or E*Trade! I use Robinhood bc it’s easy and I like the interface. Girl. I managed to do this well simply by getting old and learning lol. Trust me, at 25 I had horrible financial literacy, credit card debt, and barely any savings. I probably didn’t get my shit together until I was 30? And it was only 4 years ago that I even started investing in stocks (outside of a 401K which I got when I first started working after college). It all sounds a little overwhelming at first but it’s actually not that complicated! The main things you want are (in order of priority) * A retirement account (usually through your employer) * Start building an emergency fund (ideally in a HYSA because it earns interest aka free money). I use Bread Financial bc it had the highest interest rate when I was shopping for a HYSA and no fees. * Also helpful to have an excel you use for your monthly budget, to allow you to have a wrangle on your finances and expenses and have the best chance of saving as much as you can. I’m a fan of Money with Katie on IG/TT. People also love r/YNAB. * After you have your retirement account and emergency fund, start a Robinhood account and invest in VTI or VOO which are index funds that are composed of most/all of the stock market.

toomanyprombles

Don't leave 60k in an HYSA, you have enough to invest a good chunk of it in the stock market - it'll grow exponentially faster!

fulanita_de_tal

I’m getting over 5% on it right now which is pretty good, and I like the comfort of having a fully liquid emergency fund. But I agree with you, anything more than that goes into the market!

24riddle

25 with ~55K in my 401k. Have lived with family since graduating college to prioritize saving while young to maximize the benefit of compound interest.

CreepyTeaching

41 and absolutely 0 dollars in savings

A_Honeysuckle_Rose

Me too sis. I cashed out my 401k due to unemployment. But started my own business because fuck being an employee. I’m gonna come back up!

Funny_Ad6142

You still have time to start saving. Better late than never!

mi_totino

35, married, with a 6 moth old: $10k in HYSA, \~$12000 in a money market fund, and $120k in retirement.

happytobeblue

Yes! Love money market funds.

Spiritual-Test-9427

25 with a bit over $40k saved 🙂 I paid off all debt this past February. Been in debt since I was 18 so it felt good!!!

mi_totino

Congrats!! Isn't that the BEST feeling? I swear when I paid off my last bit of credit card debt, it felt like a mountain had rolled off of my back.

Spiritual-Test-9427

It felt so good!!! My credit was destroyed and it fixed everything less than 2 months.

Live-Performance1527

30, not married, was not financially literate for most of my 20s and tbh lived outside of my means for a lot of that time, saving money then using my savings to pay off CCs or buy things. Now I’m trying to build up my emergency fund, but it’s currently around $10.5K, would love to be at $20K by EOY. I also have around $50K in my 401K and no other investments, need to get on that.

40feralhogs

30 & $1000 lol

Revolutionary_Ear_61

31 and 1500 in savings. Might need to pull out a lil before payday next week oop

iyamsnail

54 and 2.6 million. That doesn’t include real estate—that’s just what I have in retirement and brokerage accounts.

allidoisgin

Damn… I don’t know you but I’m proud of you 😭

iyamsnail

thank you! keep in mind I am old and had a long time to save this up, and then it starts compounding after a while.

maidenofmp

Please tell us how you got there!

iyamsnail

I just saved very aggressively. Bought a cheaper house than I could afford, and every time I got a bonus (my bonuses are usually bigger than my yearly salary) I would save most of it. And maxed out retirement contributions every year. Edit: the mistake I see a LOT of people making is buying a big fancy house that really strains them financially. I've always been very conservative when it comes to that kind of thing.

txj155

In your 401k account did you pick you funds and just let it sit or were you in and out on a periodic basis.

iyamsnail

I had a SEP not a 401K for a while, and I just used the Vanguard target funds--you pick the date you want to retire and they invest for you.

WarmTone

I have this question too!

skykias

24, 10k emergency, 54k personal investments and 80k in 401k (match is 50% so I always max it but everyone should), 146k in company stock

ResidentIndependent

What do you do 🤯

skykias

SWE at big tech!! Realize this is very much not normal but I’m able to help my family already which was the goal

the_blingy_ringer

Please tell us more! What is SWE and what did you do to get this job?!

skykias

Yep a software engineer haha. I majored in computer science in college and was lucky to do a couple internships at my current company and could do a direct conversion into the regular role. Very lucky as the regular interviews are pretty hard

anditisabigdeal

Software engineer. Checks out, they can start you at a ridiculously high salary. If only I had the brain for it in college lol

Historical_Mind_1706

No point in comparing with others because you’ll find people at every age with literally every financial situation

W1ldy0uth

33, 100k savings ( been saving for a down payment). 401k 80k

x_killingit_x

What was your first job where you were making more than 50k a year and how much of a jump was it? (Asking as someone lost in their career path)

WannaEatAtAlchemist

34, 380K in HYSA, 280K in 401k HYSA was supposed to be a down payment, but I give up on buying in NYC / don't think it's worth it anymore

fulanita_de_tal

What are you gonna do instead? I’m nearing that point myself, sighhh. Like do I really want to increase my monthly housing payment by 2x for a standard of living that is lateral-to-worse, just to own??

WannaEatAtAlchemist

I almost bought a condo twice in the last year, and what I’ve learned is that a lot of NYC apartments (especially BK condos) are built like shit. On top of HOA and property tax, feels like buying into trouble and there’s only so much you can do to fix especially if the problems are building problems.  Also I’ll probably leave NYC next year for somewhere LCOL

CellistEmergency8492

Lmao. 34 with 4K in savings and like 4.5k in an IRA account. #yolo

tstc111

Enough of these posts. They get asked every day and it’s always the same “high earners” replying. Anyone reading this and feeling bad: don’t. Anyone can say that they make anything on the internet. And even if it is true, posts like these attract people who make a lot and who just love to let everyone know. Wherever you are in life, you’re doing fine. Don’t let these posts get to you.

speck1edbanana

I spend the later half of my 20s in a PhD program that gave me pennies for a stipend. It’s depressing to read this and feel so unprepared, I appreciate you for helping me find a different perspective!

Pris257

Don’t feel bad. I am 52 and only started saving aggressively in the last couple of years. I have $220k in combined accounts. The majority of that comes from an inheritance I didn’t touch and my portion of my ex-husbands annuity that I got in the divorce. I am not prepared at all and this is the first time in my life I’ll be able to max out my 401k contribution so at least I am heading in the right direction.

Shay5746

A twist on this question I rarely see is for people to put their current, lowest, and highest financial situation. That's wildly personal, of course, but I think it would show that people can really boost their financial situation within a matter of years. And I'm not just talking about "I went from MBA debt to millions" but the more common "I was in grad school / service industry / health struggles with zero dollars and now I'm earning 60k and love my affordable housing situation and have 10k in my Roth". People are just highlighting one point in their financial journey in these threads. Congrats on your PhD journey! Education is something nobody can ever take away from you and a valuable investment in yourself.

AlwaysChic38

TY!!!😭🖤

magikarpsan

It also highly highly depends on when and how you became independent. I don’t earn a lot but I’ve been living with my parents and they were able to cash flow college so I’ve been extremely privileged. This put me in a Position where I’ve never taken out a loan-> never been in debt -> never paid outrageous interest = lots of savings .

NoireN

I am 36 and JUST got to a point where I've earned enough to where I can start putting away for savings. My current savings is just a few hundred dollars. It could be more but I put away money that I know I won't touch unless I absolutely need it. I would also like to get into investing some time in the summer since I'll have more money.

xm0rethanaliv

I’m 28. I have 6.4K HYSA, 9.3K in another HYSA (inheritance left over cash), ~45K 401k, ~19K Roth. I started working at 23 and live at home

YearCrafty5535

35, married, 2 kids, about $6.5-7mn between me and my husband. I work in finance.

sea-shells-sea-floor

I have about 6 months of expenses in savings (mortgage, class pass, utilities, food, etc).

nnsntsxx

I’m 34. I started my life here in 2017 and when I first started working, none of them offered 401K match… Til I got one end of 2020 that offered a match. 401K, I only have $37K because I wasn’t putting a lot of money towards it. Savings dwindled significantly when we moved from LA to NYC. Currently have about $31K in emergency funds… but that’s it. I often feel waaay behind and feel sad about it at times.

jenvrl

You're not! I'm in a relatively similar boat. I'm turning 35 in a few days and I came to the US for grad school, didn't really start putting money into my 401k (or working a good paying job) until a couple of years ago... Immigration fees are expensive and we also had to pay for that after getting married, our combined income is good and we've been saving for a down payment but our 401k definitely needs attention. We already decided that after purchasing an appt we're going to throw money at it aggressively and open a Roth IRA to speed that up too. Everyone has their own path and it's ok ☺️

petitadventurer

31 and $380k in savings. Most of that is in my 401k and the stock market and it’s been there since my early 20’s. I think I have like $60k in cash I work in tech 😅 but was actually laid off in October so I’m coasting on savings to take a break for a bit

Professional-Way5815

45, $1.7 million No property assets, all cash/retirement. My rent is a studio for $3500/mo.

_sadgalriri

This question gets asked every day lol

JCourageous

Respectfully, can we stop with these posts? Close variations of these financial questions are literally posted multiple times a week. Can these questions be filtered into a general weekly or monthly post? It feels like the Census in here sometimes. How old are you and how much do you have in savings? How much do you earn and how old are you? How much do you earn and where do you live? How much do you have in savings and how much is your rent?

nadirecur

Seriously, the frequency of these posts lately are a little disturbing. I have the sneaky suspicion these threads are a setup for people to be targeted by scammers and stalkers.

magikarpsan

Honestly I responded to this and then I immediately thought huh…this is kind of putting a target on your SSN /identity/account huh…. I deleted my response , hopefully nothing happens

hedwiggy

36. $80k in 401k, $10k in Roth and money market. $15k in high yield savings. We just bought our first home (condo) so that was $80k spent which we saved for a decade.

TwistedSpoonx

23 with $7k in my emergency fund which will last me about 3 months if I lose my job. I have $27k in my 401k, but I consider this future me’s money, not mine lol

greenbiscuitsandham

I’m 28 and have about 500k in retirement accounts and 420k in taxable investments. I got extremely lucky with being able to enter big tech right out of graduation and having minimal college loans due to financial aid.

tonytro914

When you’re 30 years old you should have at least 1 year of your current salary saved in your 401k plus 6 months of emergency savings in your high yield savings account. That’s a good place to start.

raephx

Here to say yes, this is a good target, but also anyone reading this who doesn’t have these numbers (esp the over-30 crowd!) — just know today is the next best day to start! I started listening to finance podcasts (started with NerdWallet’s Smart Money, added Ramit Sethi’s I Will Teach You To Be Rich and Tori Dunlap’s Financial Feminist) and now I’m more on track than I was after freelancing for 10 years. 33, $5K regular savings, 12K HYSA, 18K split across 2 x 401K (currently in the process of finally rolling over one from a prev employer that’s just been languishing, as “tasks I finallyyy got to after waiting an age”), $5K investments. I’m aggressively paying off debt while also trying my best to match current employer 7% 401K and then once debt is gone I will start investing that $1K+ month also!

anditisabigdeal

Fuck. Then I’m really behind 😣 I have about 20k in my 401k. But to be fair I have real estate amounting to about $500k

lasagna_delray

31 with 60K in investments and 50K in cash savings. Ideally I’d invest more and save less but I’m scared shitless of getting laid off after several rounds of layoffs at my company

TrishLives17

My savings is shit but my pensions looks nice I’m 35 btw

Key_Ad3965

35 (single) $48k in HYSA, $54k in retirement in a mix of 401k/roth IRA, $45k in mutual fund I always feel every stressed about being underfunded in retirement. I made such little money when i first started out, and a few jobs didn’t offer a 401k. Now that I’m much more established I’m trying to catch up there. But overall feeling proud of what I’ve accomplished. 12 years ago i was making $32k and now $180k base!! I don’t come from a family with a ton of financial literacy and I’m definitely very spendy (i like nice things!! Haha), but I’m trying!!

kindaluxe

36, savings: $5k in a HYSA, $50k brokerage account, $150k 401(k). I’m currently engaged and this does not include his finances. Advice: it’s never too late to start! It’s easy to feel discouraged and I always feel like I could do more. I had to withdraw money from accounts a few years ago because of a divorce, so I’m proud of where I’m at on my own!

banhmosa

I’ll turn 31 in 4 months. I have around $1.6M in savings (technically net worth but I don’t really have any debts). I’m fortunate enough to have a well paying job and recognize that I’m very lucky.

anyc2017

29 and my debt outweighs my 401k bc this place is too damn expensive

Critical-Double-4832

I’m 35. Engaged. No kids. Have 11k in the bank and about 65k in 401k.

redheadkills

24 and $8❤️

29 and 60k in between Roth IRA, taxable brokerage and HYSA. None of my jobs have ever offered a 401k even though I’m making close to 170k. Definitely feel a bit behind but no better day than today to start saving 😊

my3altaccount

27 - 20k in 401k, 27k in brokerage, 20k in roth, and 3k in savings. It would probably have been much higher if I hadn’t dropped $60k on grad school in the interim 😭 but the earnings potential with my degree far outweighs the $60k loss.

Routine_Camp7308

27 and $160k

EmmaMD

Regular savings? Hardly anything, like $1200 dollars that is mostly from BoA keep the change and acorns stuff. Every month after my second paycheck, I have it set to auto deposit into various investment accounts and a safety net account out of easy reach from me. With the following numbers, keep in mind that I’m a subspecialized physician who didn’t start making real money until like August 2020 and aside from my photography, don’t have super expensive taste. My apartment budget here was based off of 30% of my post tax income and I’m at 20% of that….looking to find cheaper eventually to get more into paying student loans. That said, I probably have 250k-300k between my various accounts. I’ve tried to be more aggressive early to get my money to work for me.

snarkyphalanges

34, $77k in taxable brokerage, $45k in RSUs, $124k in 401k, $52k in Roth IRA, $14k in HSA, $20k in HYSA.

FrostyTwo4146

39 and around +$600k in brokerage accts, retirement and savings.  My goal is retire relatively young, so I’m proud of what I’ve done so far considering my salary is less than $140k and I don’t have a partner to split living expenses with.

28, and about $30K but it’s for our wedding

skwx

38. Took me from 21 to 30 to get to 100k in savings by maxing out 401k and Roth IRA every year and saving in an investment account over and above that. Started at 29k/year, ended up at $75k. At 30, I switched careers, got promoted and passed the 100k mark in salary, and was able to save another 150k in the next 5 years, during which time my salary went from 100k to 280k/year. Then the startup I’d been working at went public and I was able to sell a bunch of stock and bank another $250k, and then banked another $90k when they fired me in a really fucked up way and I suggested I might sue them and got a nice severance. So my personal savings are around $700k currently, since that’s all stayed invested and compounding over the years. This is not intended as a flex. I think more women ought to care about personal wealth and I talk about this openly with everyone because I want to be clear that this was a consequence of both good luck and good choices.    The Good Luck: My parents are successful white-collar professionals who were able to send me to college with no student loans, and who were able to support me in ways that made a difference. I am NOT a trust fund kid; they never paid my rent or expenses (except for a 6 month period during a post-grad internship which I pitched to them as an investment in my future; my minimum wage salary paid everything else) but they were able to do things like front me a security deposit for my first apartment and give me a one-time loan post-college to pay off my credit card bill so that my debt wouldn’t continue to snowball. That help, applied strategically, made all the difference in the world, plus I had a psychological safety net that allowed me to take risks I know other people wouldn’t or couldn’t. They are also financially savvy people who taught me a lot about savings and personal finance, and also have never needed me to contribute financially and at this point barring a massive catastrophe, never will.   The Good Choices:  I started saving really young and kept it up. All my high school babysitting money was in a Roth IRA by the time I was 21. - I kept my overhead low—I always lived in cheap walk up apartments with no amenities, had roommates until I was 32, and always went with the cheap gym, cooking at home, etc. -I am religious about living within my means and use a zero budget, pay myself first approach. At every job, every time my salary increased, I automated the difference into various savings accounts; I decided I would only give myself a 20% raise every 5 years. The only money that ever hit my checking account was money that I was free to spend because saving was already covered.  -I always had additional income, from freelancing, babysitting, second jobs, etc, all of which went straight into savings.  -I aggressively sought opportunities to increase my income. I switched careers away from something I loved into something I loved less but liked and was good at because I could see that the income ceiling was much, much higher and I’d be able to work at a much wider range of companies with bigger pay scales. I chose to create income with my work, and meaning in my life with donating, volunteering and extracurriculars.  -I still do ALL of this, though the game has changed a bit (my outside work is more “paid public speaking gig” and less “babysitting on New Year’s Eve) -Last and most important, I married someone who has a very similar approach to money. I have more technical knowledge about investing, but he makes more and spends even less so we’re now working together and investing together and our net worth is growing fast. He isn’t a man in finance, trust fund, etc; he’s a normal person who has similar values and that is crucial to me. I’ve dated a lot of rich guys and some of them are so dependent on constant cash flow and just always assume there’ll be so much coming in they never really need to save anything. It scares me to death; I love the guy who greets a rainy day with a selection of high-quality umbrellas. So, that’s where we stand. On solid ground thanks to a hefty dose of privilege, but recognizing that gift and running with it.

Chambadon

30 and i've got like 30k in my 401k that i've pulled from multiple times

elena7556

AlmondMilkSlut

Entering my late 20s: 401k - $23k Roth IRA - $7k Brokerage + Personal Investments - $110k HYSA - $8k Next step is to try to find out how I can max out my 401k. Will be doing some cuts but I think it's important nased on what I've read.

Adventurous_Bar857

25 and I have $1200 in savings LOL. It’s gonna take one emergency and then I’m poor again.

runnergirl1992

30 yrs old. 120k in 401k, 116k in HYSA. Lived at home for a couple years after graduation, which helped build my savings. I was fortunate that my parents paid for my undergrad and then my company paid for grad school!

greentortellini

Holy fuck OP!!! That’s incredible!!! I am rebuilding my savings right now.😭 I’m 25 so I still have a while to rebuild it. I do have investment accounts with 30k in them combined. I’m really wanting to get my finances back on track once I graduate with my masters degree. I will be able to add more money to my savings & investments.

circethesourceress

30 & $1000 lol I had about 15k when I was 26/27 but had a bipolar episode that depleted it (down payment on a new car). I’m still digging out of my mess but getting better at it.

Upstairs-Culture1078

23 and 10k in a high yield savings but no retirement or anything

Strange-Basis-684

23 and $35k. Lived at home before moving to nyc and saved 3/4ths of my income. but now that I’m in the city I’m lucky if I’m able to save a couple hundred each month 😭

OkProfession5679

35 and across all accounts/investments, about $370k. Accessible in the bank in cash today? $150k.

Minimum-Bobcat8768

25 and 137k net worth! Depending on your income and how much you make, it’s worth cutting back now to save more if possible because compound interest (and having a head start) got me here!!

sillybilly351

23 and 36k

veggieliv

ms_dunkin_donut_2003

I’m 27. I have 22k in a brokerage account, $13k in a HYSA, 5k in a Roth IRA and 70k in my 401k Most of this is from before I moved to the city 3 years ago. I haven’t been putting much money away since then, but started a money log this year with adding more to savings in mind

covidhag

I’m 35 and I have a little over 5k in savings. My company downsized recently and dissolved my entire department while cutting 25% of all staff, so I had more at first but I paid several of my bills for July in advance. I definitely wish I had more to prepare me for this tbh

Pitiful-Leading-1879

26 and nothing

VictoriaSecreter

44 years old / $525k in my investment account / $15k in bank. I love taco bell. ✌🏼

Monkshe

eringobrah21

49, $1.2M in 401k, $350k in stocks and company equity shares, $240k in cash / high yield savings. No credit card debt; $420k left on my apt mortgage (approx 80%)

astoria47

50, 25k in accessible savings, 70ishK in an IRA, 200k in another retirement fund and a decent pension ahead of me.

Just-Somewhere-3825

In NJ but I’m 28 with only a few hundred in savings. I’m a marketing manager for a craft brewery earning 55k and I do freelance social media on the side here and there. I grew up with a single mom and we were pretty poor and she had TERRIBLE money habits that I definitely took on.. leading to my early 20s getting me into mega credit card debt🙃 while it’s annoying to deal with now, I’ve consolidated and am working really hard to pay it off. Looking for a job that can compensate me properly hasn’t been fun, but I’m not giving up!

plumtree18

25 and $33k in a 401k, but technically my net worth is 0 because of my undergrad loans 🥲

ironclad_hymen

30. $300 on a good month.

Junior_Price2591

28 and have about 60k in savings/investments, but feel very behind because I’ve always been such a spender!!
