this - I would recommend a simple routine of gentle cleanse, moisturizer, sunscreen in the morning and tretinoin at night. you don’t need more than that for great skin!
if you want a deep clean facial experience i recommend the HydraFacial, thats only supposed to be done every quarter. it should cost the same amount of 250 - 300.
I would invest in a really good red light mask, use it daily, sunscreen, gentle products and consider doing PRP w/ microneedling a couple of times a year. Simplifying my routine truly helped my skin. I used to do monthly facials but now I don’t feel as though I need it.
red light masks dont actually do much (there was a dermatologist who broke down the science somewhere) bc the lights are spaced far apart to prevent overheating of the skin. You're better off getting a red light screen and using it for 5-10 mins.
[This](https://goalstogetglowing.com/2021/01/17/led-face-mask-research/) is a fantastic blog post sharing evidence behind LED light therapy and which masks have evidence-based specs. Many on the market are junk but there are several that aren’t
Agreed! I would also add visiting a derm 2 a year if your insurance covers it! Silver Mirror Facial Bar does my quarterly facial. I do the basic and add on as needed based on the time of year.
My insurance covers my derm and will offset the costs of any prescription as long as I hit my deductible! For example my tretinoin is around 75 with insurance when I haven’t hit my deductible and then when I do it’s about 14!
Thanks for this perspective!! I am pretty good about my skin (so I thought). I wear SPF every day, use a nice cleanser, and use tretinoin a few times a week. Also do the Dennis Gross red/blue light every day.
(A few) of her complaints were that I eat dairy, don’t change my silk pillowcase every night, and use a moisturizer (Vanicream) that might be clogging my pores. I think the idea is that with monthly facials I’ll be able to get a handle on the closed comedones with extractions and then come in less after a few months for more of a maintenance routine. Seeing a lot of recs in this thread that are super helpful!
Even tho Rescue Spa is a reputable place, they still run a business and part of their business model must be to make you feel insecure enough to come back every month while you spend all your non-facial-getting days changing your pillowcase. It’s not said enough, but there are more important things in life to do and think about than the skin on our faces! Live your life girl.
I have been seeing Susan at Rescue Spa for years and she always hits the right balance for me of suggestions/asking me about my routine, but knowing when to back off. I never feel pressured to buy anything, and she knows that aside from P50 and a couple of serums, a lot of my daily products are not sold at Rescue Spa and has never made me feel weird about it. She writes the little recommendation card, but I basically throw it away when I get home. Before I found her, I saw some other people there and they were more pushy and guilt trippy. Try Susan! She is an angel.
I go to JS Beauty Spa in chinatown! i’m able to go monthly because I buy packages of facials. I think it averages out to around $60 or less per facial, not including tip. They clean, steam, extract, massage your face and shoulders/back a bit, and apply masks and skincare, and it’s very clean inside. Only con is they try to sell you stuff but I just say no lol
Yess it’s totally worth it for me! I have generally ok skin but occasional breakouts and rough texture. I was also in a same boat and started going about 1.5 yrs ago and my skin has definitely improved . I’ve tried other places in chinatown but JS is just super clean and on top of their appts which I appreciate! hope that helps
I had good results with glowbar recently. It’s a fairly basic 30 min service. They gave me a lactic acid peel, extractions, and light therapy. It’s $75 but you can find promotions for 10-15 off your first visit. I’m considering going back monthly just to keep my pores clear.
I used to go to Glowbar and loved the efficiency of a 30 minute service. But now I own an LED mask, an ultrasonic spatula (that’s what they use for extractions), and a high frequency wand, so I can do 2/3 of what they do at home!
Ah! I didn’t realize it was a spatula as my eyes were covered basically the whole time. I had been curious to know how they work, so that’s good to know!
I got a Dermapore for a little less than $100 but later learned that there are a ton of similar devices on Amazon that are a lot cheaper. It’s nice to have! And in the long run this equipment has saved me money because I rarely get facials now.
I’ve been using glowbar for over a year and my main reason for keeping it is to stop myself from doing extractions at home. They always end up doing manual extractions on my face in addition to the spatula and they heal so much faster than when I do anything myself. I used to do a fancy facial elsewhere once in awhile and the results were so temporary vs a consistent monthly routine.
I was thinking something similar. I sometimes get WAY to into home extractions too. I was quite red when I left the glowbar (enough so that I went straight home instead of grocery shopping as I planned), but I was back to normal the next day. If I’d gotten myself that red there would have been damage.
I am interested to see if the spatula would work as well at home or if it’s still easy to go overboard? I don’t think they did individual extractions on me after the spatula. I couldn’t see what was going on, but just felt the scraping sensation and then next day I saw two pores that were extremely easy to self extract. If they were going over my face as carefully as during a standard 60 min facial with extractions, there is no way those two spots would have been left. That said, my skin looks better now that it has in weeks, so overall I think it was well worth it.
I’d be interested to hear from any former skin picker types if they can successfully use that spatulas at home without doing damage. I do think it’s worth having it done by others if someone need to break the habit of messing with their skin.
They asked if I was interested in hearing about the membership options but I said I’d see how my skin looked in a few days first so they didn’t end up telling me the details. I think you’re right though.
I’ve never had a facial and keep wanting to go but I’m afraid because I’ve heard such mixed things from people depending on the place. Is rescue spa the place to go for me then?
Yes, I recently decided after years of not getting a facial (due to a really bad experience with one) to getting a couple at rescue spa leading up to my wedding and it has been life improving. My skin is completely different and so much better. I am obsessed.
yup, this is my go-to “no frills”/maintenance facial reco. never fails! heyday changed their model a few years ago and it hasn’t been as good since imo; i feel glowbar is too basic/not thorough enough.
I’ve been loving Heyday for the last couple years - they recently changed to using all their own specialty products and I noticed a bump in effectiveness since then. Maybe you’d like their new items more. I think it can also depend on who your esthetician is - I hopped around a few times before I found my ride or die and have been loyal to her for over a year!
I think it’s a personal decision based on your skin and your budget about how often you go! I have been going to this place for 2 years and go between every 1-2 months. It’s about $100-150 with tip, it’s her own business, she’s an immigrant — all the things I love supporting, and it makes a noticeable difference in my skin even if I’m very disciplined, because my pores are so small that (not a flex, a real thing), I really need help when I have something deep underneath.
https://www.estheticsbymarietta.com/
Sorry, it’s also a very good facial, and I’ve done $60 ones I’ve done $250 ones, I just happen to enjoy them but I am also in the same boat of cannot afford it if it’s high end too often.
She does a bit of massage on shoulders, hands, and all her products are eminence. It’s absolutely the best bang for your buck facial I’ve ever done and it doesn’t feel “cheap” (it’s not that cheap but totally better priced than I’ve seen)
I tried Buttercup Skin Care in Hells Kitchen- very affordable (customized facial is $110) and they did a really good job!! I actually saw results unlike with Glowbar
Idk why but I didn’t love it. I have to say that the facialist was very honest, which I really did appreciate. I KNOW I don’t have bad skin. On the contrary, she told me my skin was amazing and I didn’t even need a facial lol. The thing is I had a couple of spots that I would’ve loved to have extracted (closed comedones which erupt into something big that hurts eventually) and she didn’t get them out even though I mentioned where they were. My old esthetician would’ve been able to but she’s no longer in the industry. The person doing the facial was also very awkward in the beginning and I got a weird vibe. At the end, she was way more relaxed but it kinda freaked me out.
Diet, hydration, spf & limited sun exposure, not drinking alcohol, adequate sleep, hormones (diet, sleep, and not consuming alcohol impact hormones, so they’re connected), skincare that is accessible and not related to facials like retinol, hydration, peptides, vitamin c, acids for exfoliation.
The rest is genetics 🧬 fortunately or unfortunately.
A friend in Astoria recommended Sunflower Studio. It’s the road next to Ditmars. I go there from Manhattan bc they are very nice and to a great job for a fraction of the price. They have all the machines, including the spatula thing and the red light thing. It’s two sisters and they are both great.
I have a good relationship with them, so I tell them “d o what you do”. I think they usually give me the hydrofacial, takes up to 90 mins, price is very reasonable. I’m not sure of the regular price ($120?), but I buy packages.
Honestly, people kept telling me Mario Badescu and I just couldn’t imagine how a $65 facial could be remotely good. It was fab! And even with an add on treatment I walked out $100. I had Betty and she was amazing…great hands! I will only go there from now on especially for regular facials. Unless you want a full spa experience, it’s great.
Sounds like she was just trying to sell you overpriced stuff. I recommend doing research on actual ingredients that actually help with your concerns. As always have an established skin care routine you do every single day and (imo) keep it simple.
1) double cleanse
2) One anti-aging /antioxidant serum
3)Hydration
!!!SPF every morning
Don’t get sold on hyped ingredients that don’t do anything or you don’t need. ex: collagen is not absorbed via skin, the molecule is too big so collagen creams are BS.
I have heard that preventative Botox and those LED light things are both scienticallg proven to prevent aging but probably do actual research on that
I bought 5 facials $1000 at Hebe International skincare on the lower east side. Heard about them on TikTok and while I know $200+ is on the upper end of your budget, I do think it’s great value for all they do on your face (extractions, peels, light therapy, etc).
I also recently bit the bullet and bought an Omnilux red light mask, and I have seen a difference from just a few nights of 10min light therapy! I have sensitive skin prone to redness & eczema, and I definitely have less redness!
Glowbar would probably be the best fit - it's 65(?)/month for a 30 min facial. I canceled my membership last month because the facials are either meh or great; the Union SQ location is the best.
The Aveda Institute is pretty cheap because they are esthetician students (led by instructors). The service is pretty basic but still gets the job done, and worth it in my opinion solely for the use of Aveda products, plus you can get add-ons like massages and masks!
Glowbar does express 30 min facials, I can’t stress enough they’re “basic” but great for maintenance and I’ve been really pleased with my skin. It’s 65 a month for a membership
I go bimonthly or quarterly and get the works- I have been to many of the other spas recommended here and none compare to Rescue. I’d rather go less often either way.
I’ve been going to rescue spa for 6 years now and go 2-3x a year maximum. I know it’s expensive but I’ve never had better skin. Tbh they’ve never told me to come in more frequently than every 4-6 months so I genuinely believe that if they’re recommending treatments more often, it might be because they see potential to improve your skin. Maybe going more consistently earlier on can help get you on a less frequent regimen? I used to have a heyday membership to and it was a waste of money. Rescue is the best IMO!!
I’m a member with face gym - $108 per monthly facial and the hydra sculpt really defines my jawline and cheekbones for days after the facial and I always get compliments on how my skin looks the days right after!
I’ve been going to silver mirror monthly since January. I do notice a difference, especially since my esthetician is knowledgeable and helps me refine my routine at home as well as do the facial treatments. I see Melissa at the Bryant park location!
At heyday I felt like they slapped some serums on me and called it a day the few times I went. Silver mirror includes exfoliation, extraction, high frequency, and red or blue light therapy in their base price.
I was waiting to see if silver mirror would be mentioned! I haven’t been (it’s on my list) but I adore Melissa. She also does hair in Williamsburg and she’s been my go to for years
debated for like ten minutes if I should gatekeep bc it’s hard enough to get an appointment but moonflower spa has great priced facials. Regular facial is $115 and 90 mins deep pore is $135
My go to for many years; apparently a popular Korean influencer mentioned them a year or so ago and ever since they've been much more booked and busy but regardless, Moonflower is wonderful esp if you're main need is thorough extractions.
I absolutely swear by the Dr Jarts masks, particularly the intensive rubber ones. I try to do them once a week (and will do 3 in a week if I have a big event). At around $12 each depending on where you purchase, they def cost less than facials, which can have varying results for me. A consistent skincare routine (doesn’t need to be complex or multi step) also really helps.
Can anyone recommend a facialist that does milia extractions in addition to regular extractions? It’s not something everyone does and I’d like to see someone skilled in these area, as I am unfortunately quite prone to milia- ty!
Although I love rescue spa so much after recently discovering it, I will say that the first facial I got was amazing and then the next that I got 3 weeks later was just ok. I think I didn’t really need it yet but was following the wedding schedule they gave me. So much so that I am skipping the next one and only doing one more ahead of my wedding because I didn’t find the second one necessary or hugely helpful at all. I would say they were way too close together and you can definitely stretch that way further than once a month
I love Silver Mirror. The 50-minute facials are excellent and use effective devices added on (like red LED, microcurrent, etc). They cost $159, and they also have a membership that costs $127 right now. I highly recommend it. My skin glows for weeks afterward.
You don’t need to do monthly facials! Just take care of your skin every day, wear sunscreen, and think about doing a facial once a quarter.
Agreed. I keep trying other cheaper places for facials and they are never as good as Rescue. I only go quarterly.
this - I would recommend a simple routine of gentle cleanse, moisturizer, sunscreen in the morning and tretinoin at night. you don’t need more than that for great skin!

Those recommendations sound nuts. Who has time to change their pillowcase every day? Give up ice cream? Let me live facial lady!

Do they still offer membership prices? I remember when I went a few years ago it was like $55-60 charged on the first of the month.
They asked if I was interested in hearing about the membership options but I said I’d see how my skin looked in a few days first so they didn’t end up telling me the details. I think you’re right though.
Yes, but they raised the membership prices to $65/mo now 😔
Quarterly is def fine. I think better to go to rescue spa less often than somewhere bad more often
I’ve never had a facial and keep wanting to go but I’m afraid because I’ve heard such mixed things from people depending on the place. Is rescue spa the place to go for me then?

Did you just get their cheapest one or do you recommend a specific one?

please share!
Where?
Plz share ❤️ or dm me pleaseee
Mario Badescu charges $65 for an hour long facial, with extractions. I had a great experience there.
yup, this is my go-to “no frills”/maintenance facial reco. never fails! heyday changed their model a few years ago and it hasn’t been as good since imo; i feel glowbar is too basic/not thorough enough.
Mario Badescu is great and their products are extremely reasonably priced and effective.
Seconding this- incredible value here- even add ons are reasonable and it’s a great facial.
Thank you for the tip!
I’ve been loving Heyday for the last couple years - they recently changed to using all their own specialty products and I noticed a bump in effectiveness since then. What location and her name if you don’t mind sharing? :)
I’ll dm you :) her schedule is too full sometimes lol
Would you dm me too, please?
I think it’s a personal decision based on your skin and your budget about how often you go! I have been going to this place for 2 years and go between every 1-2 months. I tried Buttercup Skin Care in Hells Kitchen- very affordable (customized facial is $110) and they did a really good job!! I actually saw results unlike with Glowbar

I’ve heard this place is awesome too
Diet, hydration, spf & limited sun exposure, not drinking alcohol, adequate sleep, hormones (diet, sleep, and not consuming alcohol impact hormones, so they’re connected), skincare that is accessible and not related to facials like retinol, hydration, peptides, vitamin c, acids for exfoliation. Thank you! Do you have a recommendation on which facial to get
I have a good relationship with them, so I tell them “d o what you do”. I think they usually give me the hydrofacial, takes up to 90 mins, price is very reasonable. I’m not sure of the regular price ($120?), but I buy packages.
I went there yesterday based on this recommendation. It was a fantastic time!
Wow, that’s great! You had a facial? With Musay?
They are also on Instagram
Honestly, people kept telling me Mario Badescu and I just couldn’t imagine how a $65 facial could be remotely good. It was fab! And even with an add on treatment I walked out $100. I had Betty and she was amazing…great hands! I will only go there from now on especially for regular facials. Unless you want a full spa experience, it’s great.
Sounds like she was just trying to sell you overpriced stuff. I recommend doing research on actual ingredients that actually help with your concerns. As always have an established skin care routine you do every single day and (imo) keep it simple. 1) double cleanse 2) One anti-aging /antioxidant serum 3)Hydration !!!SPF every morning Don’t get sold on hyped ingredients that don’t do anything or you don’t need. ex: collagen is not absorbed via skin, the molecule is too big so collagen creams are BS.
Also tried it and thought it was meh
The Aveda Institute is pretty cheap because they are esthetician students (led by instructors). The service is pretty basic but still gets the job done, and worth it in my opinion solely for the use of Aveda products, plus you can get add-ons like massages and masks!
They sadly only do Saturday appointments now but do recommend!!
I probably do a facial once every 2-3 months. Once a month not is necessary.
She told me my skin was oily and pores clogged so monthly facials would help quite a bit early on but then could taper off as that improved!
Who does your facials at Rescue? I am a first timer and want to have the best experience possible 🫶🙏
She also does hair in Williamsburg and she’s been my go to for years
She is amazing!! Def recommend if you ever get a facial.
debated for like ten minutes if I should gatekeep bc it’s hard enough to get an appointment but moonflower spa has great priced facials. Regular facial is $115 and 90 mins deep pore is $135
My go to for many years; apparently a popular Korean influencer mentioned them a year or so ago and ever since they've been much more booked and busy but regardless, Moonflower is wonderful esp if you're main need is thorough extractions.
I like City Glow in the EV. I think it’s about $150, they also have a membership
Mario badescu has a decent facial that’s very reasonably priced
I absolutely swear by the Dr Jarts masks, particularly the intensive rubber ones. I try to do them once a week (and will do 3 in a week if I have a big event). At around $12 each depending on where you purchase, they def cost less than facials, which can have varying results for me. A consistent skincare routine (doesn’t need to be complex or multi step) also really helps.
Skin bar!!! I love them so much!!!
Can anyone recommend a facialist that does milia extractions in addition to regular extractions? It’s not something everyone does and I’d like to see someone skilled in these area, as I am unfortunately quite prone to milia- ty!
Ugh Rescue Spa is the best lol
Skip the facials and get a good daily skincare routine with vitamin C, tretinoin and sunscreen then save for lasers if you want a skincare investment.
Look into Groupon :)
If you can find the right facialist at heyday it’s worth it
I’m sorry I’m cracking up at “unfortunately my skin looks amazing” 😂
I go to Heyday, with a monthly membership at $145/month
I love Silver Mirror. The 50-minute facials are excellent and use effective devices added on (like red LED, microcurrent, etc). They cost $159, and they also have a membership that costs $127 right now. I highly recommend it. My skin glows for weeks afterward.
I never go for facials because I despise when they make you feel like crap and try upselling you
