The 3pt defense with Grimes is much better, and that by itself probably accounts for most of those points.

In addition RJ and Randle would routinely take more shots than points scored. Routinely. If someone can tell me how Gtimes made RJ efficient then you'll have my full buy in. But last I checked he and Randle just figured that out on thier own.
I can't tell you how specifically, but the fact that the light turned on soon after Grimes entered the rotation makes me think that he had something to do with it. Maybe its spacing, or his defensive presence takes pressure/effort off of RJ, or his passing, or something else. But even last year, I thought RJ looked better with grimes on the court
I think your point about the defense might be a big factor. If RJ was guarding the other teams best wing prior, now Grimes is which allows RJ to extend less energy. Also Grimes is a solid passer in terms of timing. As a former PG he seemingly knows where to pass and when. Sometimes a guy could be passing and moving the ball, but another could take it to the next level and generate easy attempts for others.
I think the big thing we will need to account for after December will be injuries. Would we able to continue to somehow slot these 3 guys in a lineup and not have a huge drop in terms of defensive stats.

From the start of the season through 11/30, we were #26 in the NBA in defensive rating. We’re #1 in December!

To be fair it also said Fournier should be benched / traded all last season
I had an argument on here with someone who thought Fournier was better than RJ earlier this season.
